Bad to have firewall on router on as well?
I have the firewall turned on in Lion but was wondering if it's bad to also have it in the DSL modem (Westell); there it's currently set on "Off" (for a desktop in a remote location so I'm not too worried about security but still).

When it's enabled at the router, no one on the outside can see any device attached to it. That's partly what a good router firewall does. With only the Mac's firewall on, any hacker who happens to ping your Mac can see it. Then it's just a matter of whether or not they can get past it. Which is not easy to do. OS X uses a very robust firewall. But better they can't see it in the first place.
Note that firewalls keep intruders out. They cannot prevent you, the user, from installing malware.

Difference between Firewall and Router
I can do VPN remote access configuration by using cisco firewall also I can do it using the cisco router by using the SDM program so what is the benefits from using the firewall or all of them are the same?
I mean it's recommended to use the firewill? if yes, why ?Answer-

I keep getting the following message when I try to activate remote programming:
Remote DVR Activation Failure Remote DVR is not supported on non-Verizon routers. Remote DVR service works only with the Verizon supplied routers and with no changes to the original setup. Since you are using your own router and/or firewall setup we cannot enable Remote DVR on your account.
The problem is that I DO have a Verizon router, and I don't know what I can do to enable remote programming. To my knowledge I have not made changes to the original setup....chrisp wrote:

One of my BIGGEST complaints about ALL the remote features and CID. The router MUST have the correct port forwarding rules in the router, so the web site can find the DVR, or STBs for CID. They never get set right, always get messed up with even the simplest changes to the Verizon router. I gave up on all of it and started using my router that I like better. Even with all the correct port forwarding rules in the router, the features are hit or miss in my opinion. These rules are read only and can only be fixed by Verizon.
Contact tech support and insist that it be fixed while you are on the phone. It can be fixed, and do not take the it will need to be escalated, as an answer. Once I was told it would need to be escalated and could take a couple days. Look at your router, and if it is a REV A. Have it replaced because they are nothing but trouble. If you log into the router you should see forwarding rules for each STB or DVR. -
I have an imac and a macbook pro. my creative suite 5.5 design premium is on them both. I'm about to take them in to the apple store because they are running bad and have them completely restored to factory settings. when I get them back will i be able to re-install my adobe creative suite to both of my computers using my same product code from when i first bought it?
Yes. Just make sure to deactivate the license on both systems using Apple menu --> Deactivate while one of the suite programs is running.

I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time
Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on
what other
external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and
how to configure that disk.
A complication that I need to resolve is the fact that I am using Vmware
Fusion to be able to use Windows on my Mac. Now it seems that Time
Machine is not backing up my files
on that virtual Windows without additional configuration and my question
is whether you can advise me here or whether this is only a matter for
the Fusion virtual machine.If you want to use Time Capsule you can.. you simply bridge it and plug it into the existing router.. wireless can be either turned off or used to reinforce the existing wireless.. eg use 5ghz in the TC which is much faster than your 2.4ghz.
You can also use a NAS.. many brands available but the top brands are synology, qnap and netgear readynas series. These will all do Time Machine backups although how well always depends on Apple sticking to a standard. There are cheaper ones.. I bought a single disk zyxel which was rebadged and sold through my local supermarket. It actually works very well for TM at least on Snow Leopard. Major changes were made in Lion and again ML so do not instantly think it will work on later versions. I haven't tried it yet with those versions.
Any external drive can be plugged into the mac. Use the one with the fastest connection or cheapest price according to your budget. USB2 drives are cheap and plentiful. But no where near as fast as USB3 or FW800. So just pick whichever suits the ports on your Mac. Interesting Apple finally moved to USB3 on their latest computers.
TM should exclude the VM partition file.. it is useless backing it up from Mac OS side.. and will slow TM as it needs to backup that partition everyday for no purpose.. TM cannot see the files inside it to backup just the changes.
You need to backup windows from windows. Use MSbackup to external drive.. if you have pro or ultimate versions you can backup to network drive. But MSbackup is a dog.. at least until the latest version it cannot restore the partition without first loading windows. There are about a zillion backup software versions for windows.. look up reviews and buy one which works for you. I use a free one Macrium Reflect which does full disk backups and is easy to restore.. to do incremental backups though you have to pay for it. -
Error "Turn on Home Sharing in iTunes". But it's on. I do have a new router though...
When I try to use my Computer section on my Apple TV so that I can view movies or music in my iTunes library it gives me the error "Turn on Home Sharing in iTunes". Of course I have done that already in iTunes on my computer. I went into my iTunes preferences and in sharing made sure "Share my library on my local network" was checked. It's not requiring a password so it should be good to go.
The only thing I can think that it is is that I recently changed to a new router. Right now I am using my old Qwest modem to get DSL. But now it's using transparent bridging and I have it plugged into a new Cisco 800 series router and I also have a Cisco Aironet 1200 AG series for my wireless devices. This is the only thing that has changed on my network so I assume that is the problem. I am using WPA encryption.
I have my entire music library as well and my entire movie library that I like to get through my Apple TV. I am unable to access any of it. I would be so grateful if anyone can help me. It may be an easy fix but I can't find it. I searched the forum and couldn't find anything. Thanks in advance for any help!I had this issue when i got my apple tv, found that they were on different parts of the network with different ip address parts. They need to be on the same segment (not sure if that is the right term) I have 2 routers one with wireless operating and powerline link to apple tv and the other have the pc with the shared itunes, changed the connections and it works fine.

I have a tesco router and an external hard drive attached to it as a network drive (shared) for my macbook and MB-Air. Have no problems with my MB accessing it, but with MB-AIR it says - 'the version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. pls contact your system administrator to resolve the problem'. MB-Air uses maverick downloaded yesterday - upgrade from mountain lion. MB uses snow leopard still, as i am quite used to it and am thinking of upgrade if mavericks work fine on air. Also have parallel on snow leopard but it is no longer supported according to mac website - if i upgrade am i going to lose my parallel and will have to buy a new one!!!
Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think? -

I like the idea of auto back-up for my new iMac, Ipad and PC Netbook, particularly if I can access all files and data stored on any device. But I have a Conceptronic router.
1. Will Time Capsule work with this and how?

RayThe key to what you seem to want to do is to be able to get Apple's Time Capsule router to "join" the network that your Conceptronic router. I believe that works with some third-party routers, but I've never seen a list of those that work in such a configuration and I have no experience with Conceptronic equipment.
You might be better off with a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device instead of a Time Capsule. -
I Have a wifi router which is located in my brothers bedroom. Now I am buying a iMac. Along with it I want to buy a time capsule which I want in my bed room. Is it possible to connect the two wifi routers wirelessly?
The Time Capsule can be configured to "join a wireless network" so backups will occur over the wireless network that is being provided by the wireless router in the other bedroom.
Things will be fine as long as there is a strong wireless signal where the Time Capsule will be located.
But...the Time Capsule cannot "extend" the wireless network or provide more wireless coverage...unless...the other router is also an Apple product. -
After updating my iPad 2 to iOS 6, I cannot connect to my router. I have turned the router off, left off for a considerable time, turned the iPad off and on, reset the network settings, nothing works. Any other suggestions? It is obvious many others are having similar problems, so the iOS 6 looks like a loser.
I have just upgraded from a 3 to a 4S and now I can't connect to my wifi. I've tried everything, resetting network settings, switching to boot, renewing lease, rebooting, turning off cellular data etc etc. nothing works!! Very frustrating!

If you do not have internet at home - MacBook Air works perfectly fine offline.
