Bad to leave backlight off?

I was just wondering.. I use my iBook alot with the vga adapter & a dell display.. when I have my iBook half closed while doing this, is it better to keep the backlight off or on.. or does it make no difference? I've been keeping it off while it's not in use and I just wanted to know if keeping it off for prolonged periods of time is bad for the iBook's display. Thanks alot

Hi Patrick,
Are you talking about the "burn in" effect? That is most commonly known with the CRT displays. Leaving your screen on should only cause problems with causing the computer to over heat. I don't think that it will effect the screen.
I hope that helps,
Jon

  • Hiss with 5G when using SoundDock or similar ONLY when Backlight OFF

I've found this problem on two 30gig 5G iPods and I think it may be present on all.
    -If battery is full (completely)
    -If backlight is OFF
-iPod connected to a set of speakers via dock connecter AND the speakers control the volume, not the wheel on the iPod
Then, in quiet sections of music there is a noticable hiss from the speakers. This disappears as soon as the backlight goes on. Also not present if the iPod is charging (rather than charged already).
It happens on my Bose SoundDock and Belkin Auto Kit.
Also tried it on Kensington SX 2000 in an Apple Store - Same problem.
As a consequence the Apple store replaced my iPod. Now I've worked out about the battery, I think it is prenent on all 5G iPods, as it started on the replacement iPod as soon as it was fully charged.

    Hmmm, interesting thought Jon,
In my case it would be 50Hz Hum as I'm on the other side on the Atlantic.
Would you get such interference in a car though? I get the same problem with my Belkin Auto kit. This is basically a cig power adaptor with a small preamp in it. It connects to the dock connector and takes the line level audio, and preamps it and sends it to a 3.5mm jack that you connect your audio tape adaptor to. Same issue - hum/hiss with backlight OFF only when unit fully charged.
I've just taken to leaving my iPod not to turn off the screen, as I most use it powered.
Submitted the feedback as you suggested.

  • Early 2008 MacBookPro keyboard backlight off and fans run at high speed

    Hi!
    I wrote from Turkey.
My Early 2008 MacBookPro 2.40 ghz 4 gb Ram OSX Mavericks machine's keyboard backlight off and fans run at high speed; it seems an exact smc resetting problem.
So i tried the 2 ways of SMC restting procedure; both battery you can move and not, but nothings changed on the situation..
On the way for removable battery; nothing changed but on the way for umremovable battery way; keyboard backlight flashes and gone, but fans are at high speed not changed. So nothing changed.
What can i do right now? i'll wait for your advices
    Thanks

Your Mac may need a new PRAM battery.  Once it is over 4 years old, that often is needed.

  • Deleting only album art or leaving it off of iPod?

Is there a way to delete all of your album art or just leave if off of the iPod (preferable) when transfering your music from iTunes. I am trying to maximize space and prioritize music on a very full iPod. Thanks.

Connect your iPod to the computer. Change the settings for music management on the iPod so that album artwork are not shown on iPod (uncheck the box)

On my mac should I turn on the firewall; and file vault or just leave them off?

Yes, you should turn on your Firewall, and in the advanced options, select 'stealth mode'.
Unless you want to encrypt your hard drive, you don't need File Vault and can leave it off.

  • Is it bad to leave your iPhone connected to the charger constantly?

I was looking at buying the Mophie juice pack plus and was seeing if it was bad to leave the mophie running while my iphone is fully charged.

    Battery life for your iPhone
For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).

Run a diagnostics test and got the result BackLight Off ; Fail. Is this maybe the source of my apparent battery problems. Replaced battery but still running out in 3 hours.
What can I do about this result?

found the answer! - posted in 2010 from Bryan: hold the centre and menu buttons down at the same time for about 15 seconds. Had to do it about 3 times until the apple icon comes up and then its ok. Thank you.
Now to update my 'stuff'. I love this board! Thanks.

  • Watching Video With BackLight Off...

Do you think that increases the video time, or by how much... ill make a test but i just got my ipod so i gotta let go through a couple charges im hearing.

you can't turn backlight off during watching video. it's factory setting on hardware. even you can't alter that setting from dignostic mode, too.

  • Is it bad to leave ipod in the dock

I have a Belkin dock that connects to my receiver. It also charges my ipod. Is it bad to leave it in the dock for extended periods? Afraid of battery issues etc.

No.  That should be just fine.  See this article for more details and information regarding your iPod's battery.

  • "sleep 1; xset dpms force off" doesn't turn backlight off

I have a 13'' Macbook Pro connected to a 24'' Apple Cinema Display LED monitor and I'm running a XFCE as DE, and running the nvidia-beta + nvidia-utils-beta from AUR. I'm using the external monitor as the main screen and the MBP display turned off. I don't have a separate screensaver installed.
Until a couple of months ago issuing 'sleep 1; xset dpms force off' would  turn the backlight of the Apple Cinema Display off, which is how I like it. Now however the backlight switches off for a second, switches on again showing a blank (black with backlight on) screen. I experimented with the xset screensaver settings (xset s ...) but none enable me to turn the backlight off.
    output of 'xset q' :
    Keyboard Control:

    DPMS (Energy Star):
    Standby: 600 Suspend: 600 Off: 600
    DPMS is Enabled
With the Apple Cinema Display disconnected and using only the laptop monitor 'sleep 1; xset dpms force off' does turn the backlight off. So it seems to be something about using the external monitor.

Thank you!  Nice to know I am not alone.  Googling has brought me nothing, though it's difficult to pinpoint discussions about something like this, as users may not know enough to work out what the problem is and not even mention DPMS!
Anyway, my setup consists of an i7 running on an X58A board with an ATi 5850 card using the radeon driver, from testing, not git.  System is fully up to date with testing enabled, X has little manual configuration besides telling it what driver to use.
I should mention that prior to this, I was using the fglrx driver, and had a similar but different problem.  With the fglrx driver, when using DPMS, after an undetermined time, could be minutes, could be hours, X would peg the CPU and become unresponsive, not even able to change to another VT.  Another issue difficult to google as a lot of users wouldn't know to ssh in to have a poke round.  I switched to radeon in an effort to get rid of this problem, only to have it replaced with another!
Neither times did anything out of the ordinary turn up in any logs.  Frustrated isn't the word!  For now I have turned off monitor power saving in KDE though this isn't ideal
EDIT:  Turning off monitor power saving in KDE didn't work, so I have no added
    Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "BlankTime" "0"
    Option "StandbyTime" "0"
    Option "SuspendTime" "0"
    Option "OffTime" "0"
    EndSection
    to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-xorg.conf
Of course, I'd like to be able to use DPMS!  Anyone have any ideas how this can be rectified?

  • Leave MacBook off for 2 months?

Hello! I'm leaving the country for over 2 months. Is it OK to leave my computer (MacBook Air) turned off for that long?

I would think that it should be fine if you make sure you switch it off (full shutdown - not just closing the lid). Try and leave it with a full charge (at least 80%) and if possible store it somewhere it won't get too hot or cold while you are away.
    Enjoy your trip - Mark

  • How do you turn keyboard backlight off in silverlight?

    HI,
My settings are for the backlight on my keyboard to go off after 30 seconds of non-use but when I watch films using silverlight, the light won't go off. I have contacted Lovefilm and they gave me instructions for uninstalling then reinstalling but it still won't switch off. Any ideas? It's getting on my nerves big time. Thanks

    Hi esther40,
If your keyboard backlight isn't dimming on no activity when using Silverlight, you may want to try manually adjusting the backlight in those cases using the F5 and F6 keys. You may find the following article helpful:

But yesterday I was on customer object and system crushed (power off) twice. After second crush I had found that can't open main VI (attached).
This error was in LV6 (my first version), in LV7 fnd now in LV8 (8.3)
I'm not sure, but may by bad file is smaller than correct file (from backup).
Why this happen and how can I avoid this error?

    Hi Artem,
I would not call it a LV-error when you switch-off (or crash) your pc while working... How should LV prevent from crashing?
There is no other answer than 'save early and often'! And starting from LV8 there is an auto-save option similar to MS Office (save every x mins)!
