Bad to run screen at a non native resolution?

Hey I'm playin CS in windows and there isn't a 1400x900 resolution for it so i;m just playing 1024x768 in a window. Is it ookay if I make it full screen @ 1024x760?

Under the current OS's (Mac and Windows), displaying at a non-native resolution is "fuzzy" due to pixel interpolation. Leopard will have "resolution independence" - no fuzziness.
Um, actually the fuzziness of non-native resolutions is a physical limitation of how LCD screens work. Leopard's resolution independence refers to something quite different (the ability to scale all UI elements to maintain their size consistently across resolutions).

  • Non-native resolutions don't scale

I've installed Windows 7 RC on a Dell Latitude D820. There is a place in the BIOS where you define the behavior of the screen when you change to a non-native resolution. By default it should scale the image to take up the entire screen. This laptop has the Mobile Intel 945 Express onboard video. When I change the resolution below the native resolution (1680x1050) it shows in a smaller window and the rest of the screen is black. This also happens if I use a program or play a game that is in a lower resolution. I'm pretty sure this behaved as normal when I had XP installed. There is a FN+F7 key combo that is supposed to scale the picture but it does nothing for me. I've updated the BIOS to A09, updated the driver via device manager where it found an update automatically. I also tried a pre-release driver from Microsoft (8.15.10.1713) but nothing seems to fix this.

what about integrated intel gpus ??? the WDDM driver doesn't have an interface to adjust the scaling pls help i have windows 8.1 i can't install win 7 driver for my gma 4500mhd not even in test mode & stuff
What about it?  This thread is not about Intel Opus.  And, this is not a Windows 8.1 forum, it's a Windows 7 forum.

  • 27" iMac non-native resolutions

So, I'm doing what a lot of folks here are doing right now, (im)patiently waiting for my new quad core 27" iMac to ship. In the meantime, I've been doing some thinking. I intend to game quite a bit on this new system, and I'm concerned about the resolution of the screen. Obviously, even with the HD4850, most games are not going to tolerate the massive resolution required of this huge screen. So obviously, to maintain decent frame rates, I'm going to have to lower the resolution. Now, I don't know much about LCD technology, but what I've heard is that how good the image quality is at non-native resolutions is dependent on the hardware in the LCD panel. From what I've heard, this is an excellent display, with all the latest bells and whistles.
So, my question, for anybody that has experience with this particular screen, or another like it, how does it handle non-native resolutions? Does it look good? Abysmal? Somewhere in between? And, if I'm going to play in a non-native resolution, I suppose my best choices would be 1920x1080 (3/4 res), or 1280x720 (1/2 res). Am I correct in that assumption?
Thanks so much for taking the time to read this, and I hope this makes for some good discussion!

It looks great. I have the 27" dual core which is the same screen. Obviously anything less than 2560x1440 resolution is going to be an interpolated resolution but the screen is extremely high quality and with that kind of pixel density to work with it's easy to make the screen look great.
Is it as tack sharp as native resolution? No, but it still looks great. I've tried 1600x900 and 1920x1200 modes which are the same 16:9 format as the native res and they look stunning even on the desktop. No worries with your gaming. Enjoy!

  • Windows 8.1 x64 Bit Black border in non-native resolution

Hello : i have a GMA 4500mhd GPU & i installed windows 8.1 & the default driver was fine all screen resolution havn't got the black borders but after i did the windows update it installed the
WDDM 1.1 driver. after a restart all non-native (under 1366x768) are not scaled to the monitor
    .. when i had windows 7 x64 ; the recommended driver 15.17.19.64.2869 was fine
& it comes with it's own interface to adjust the options like performance & quality , scale full screen & stuff but windows 8.1 didn't let me install this driver so help me

    Hello YellowMenace,
When you use the default driver, it works normally? After the Windows Update installing the WDDM 1.1 driver, the monitor resolution is changed?
Please share us a screenshot for better analyzation.
Please change the scaling option as MVP S.Sengupta mentioned.
If a new driver for your video card is causing problems, or an incorrect registry setting is preventing Windows from starting correctly, you can restart your computer using Last Known Good Configuration.

  • How to "un-zoom" non-native resolution screen?

With older ThinkPads, I was able to display lower resolution output on the ThinkPad LCD at a 1:1 pixel ratio, instead of having it stretched/zoomed.
On the W520, I don't seem to be able to do it.  And so, the result is that the BIOS boot screen, and Windows boot GUI look rahter "blurry".
Anyone know how I can make the screen smaller again?

Someone was asking a similar question:
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-and-Z-series/Y450-Screen-expansion-option/td-p/131647
It's Point 4 under section "Unsatisfactory video display on the ThinkPad LCD display":
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/diagnose-and-fix/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-4YQHUC
How come newer Thinkpads don't have this option?
Some people like the scretched look, some don't (me being in this group).  Especially in non-Windows environment, because text/fonts looks REALLY odd when stretched on a 16:9 display.

  • Gaming in non-native resolution @ i3 wm

whenever i exit a game that previously was running in a lower res than native (e.g. Soldier of Fortune with a max res of 1024x768), it lowers my desktop res (presumably to the game's own res) and in order to resolve it i have to call
    xrandr --output <device> --mode <res>
    each time.
i wonder if anybody had this before, and if so, what did they do about it?
    thx in advance!

I've come to just accept that this is what happens when playing some full-screen games in a tiling window manager. It's happened in every window manager I've ever used, and I just reset the resolution when I'm done.  I have a script that switches back-and-forth between my laptop display, and my laptop display plus an external monitor; I just run that after I'm done playing.
Try running games in windowed mode and using i3's fullscreen toggle. It's worked for me a couple times, and "fullscreen" games in i3 never grab the mouse and keyboard anyway, if you follow me.

  • Can Anyone Explain Why Using the Hightest (Native) Resolution is Preferred?

I have an '06 iMac with a 20" screen, my top resolution is 1680 x 1050, but when I try using it, yes I can "fit more on the screen", but the type is tiny, tiny, tiny, (& I can't seem to figure out how to enlarge it outside of my browsers. How do people function with microscopically small type? I have been using 1280 x 800, but am now trying 1344 x 840...
The main issue I think occurs by using the lower resolution is that my message formatting, both via Mail & when posting stuff on line, ends up all skewed, sentences break off where they shouldn't etc., as if there is some default margin that is forcing all my copy to conform to, except when I'm writing it.

Modern monitors have a fixed amount of pixels, in your case, 1680x1050 pixels. If you start sending it a signal in 1280x800 pixels, the monitor itself has to scale it up to 1680x1050 pixels in order to fit it on the screen.
You can't cleanly divide 1680 by 1280, this means that the scaled up pixels won't all be the same size. Some pixels will be wider than others.
Most people (including me) find that using a non-native resolution just looks messy.
I do agree with you that the size of everything on the screen should not be coupled to the resolution you're using on that screen. This would solve a LOT of accessibility problems for people with less than perfect eyesight.
Backwards compatibility with a lot of application frameworks and other technical things I won't get in to makes doing this very difficult (it will work for some applications, but not all, especially not older applications).

  • Flash streaming from non-native websites not working on 10.1

    Note: I am running:
    Windows 7 64 bit
    Internet explorer 8 32 bit, Firefox 3.6.3 (32 bit)
    Flash player version: 10.1.53.64
Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce GTS 240
    Graphics card driver: 257.21
Hi, Adobe Flash 10.0 was working perfectly until I upgraded it to 10.1. When I upgraded it to 10.1 by uninstalling the old version and installing the new version, the streaming function partially stopped working. I also upgraded Firefox separately, and the streaming function is working perfectly. However, my streaming Pandora Gadget on my desktop is NOT working correctly, it shows only a teeny box with a couple of shapes & colors in it, no error message whatsoever. The same is true for when I try and use embedded Youtube videos (such as on the Yahoo! website) on Internet Explorer 32 bit, but the videos on youtube directly are working perfectly. When I go to the Flash Install screen, it says it installed itself correctly, and shows the animation. I tried disabling the Hardware Acceleration, but it still didn't work on the non-native websites & the Pandora Gadget. When use an administrator account, both Internet Explorer & the Pandora Gadget work, anything I could do to make flash run in a user account besides changing them to administrator?

There are a number of posts in this forum regarding Flash Player 10.1 and non-Admin accounts not working correctly. So far there seems to be no solution apart from reverting back to 10.0

  • No apple logo shown on non-native apps

Every time i'm running a non-native app (apps not by apple) i got no apple logo on the upper left corner, it is just an aesthetic thing yet it's really annoying, apple logo is shown for apple apps, for updated apps (openoffice, skype and few more) but it's not showing for chrome, for adobe suite and so on...
(beside i got no icon in the menu bar for dropbox, but i contacted their own support too)

    Greetings,
I just had the exact same problem with a Mini. Would only boot to a gray screen no matter what I did. Booting into the OpenFirmware did help, booting into the Startup utility (by holding "T" down at startup showed no hard drive and no CD/DVD drive.
    Hold on to your hat . . . .
The issue was the battery. These guys have a Lithium battery that allows them to boot up, a battery that can be purchased anywhere that sells those kinds of thing. I bought 2 for $3.50, it was more time and trouble to get into the case and get at the logic board but once the battery was replaced everything works like a dream.
Here is an excellent step-by-step tutorial about getting into the case http://www.sterpin.net/uk/ddMacMiniuk.htm. Just make sure that doing so doesn't void any warranties.
    Good Luck!

  • Anyone else getting errors when importing Music Library music into non-native apps?

I have had a bunch of Music Production apps On my iPad for a long time and all the way through iOS four iOS 5 they worked just fine importing songs from my iPod library on my iPad and my iPhone however all of a sudden after the iOS six update they do not any longer seem to have the ability to import these songs.  It appears to be a universal problem across ALL non-native apps ... On songs that are DRM-Free.  I have specifically tried importing tracks that have imported before with no problems, downloading new copies of the same tracks, and purchasing new DRM-free content in the iTunes Store.  None of which will work.  My devices are not jailbroken, or altered from factory in any way, I just purchased a new iPhone 5 and a new iPad 3 and neither of them are allowing me to import these tracks.  I have tried:
    AnyTune / AnyTune HD
Vocalive (paid version) from IK Multimedia
Amplitube / Fender Amplitube from IK Multimedia
    ISequence Pro HD
    Studio HD
Is anyone else experiencing this problem?  I have -- on a few apps -- been shown the "Convert this song to a different format and try again" dialog, and I can import songs if I use my laptop and a browser, but I can't seem to import any song directly from the Music Library stored locally on my iPad or my iPhone.
    Help?
    Best Regards, Rob Norton

    Thanks, Ed.
Well, if iTunes is running, I figured out that you can drag the folder where the wav files are directly onto the main portion of the iTunes screen. This will
import the wav files into iTunes. Then group select the new song
entries and use "convert selection to AAC" from the Advanced menu.
There may be a way to convert without creating double entries for the
songs (I think that's the way you have to do it in iTunes: hence my attitude that iTunes is convenient in some respects, but less than clear in other respects..in other words, it's not a perfect program), but I delete the wav tracks after the conversion.
This is what I've gleaned from using iTunes a bit and from having been advised by friends. So, other than using a third-party freeware like X Lossless Decoder to convert music files before moving them onto iPod, apparently this is what you have to deal with when using the iTunes program.
If any Apple people are reading this, I would personally like the iTunes "importing" and display functions to be clearer and less cumbersome to use (like that third-party freeware). iTunes seems to be easy enough to use if you're importing music from a CD, but measurably less so if you just want to convert music files residing elsewhere on the computer's hard drive.

    Hello,
I encountered an error in the Payment Wizard screen as I was creating an Outgoing Payment for petty cash expenses. On the “Recommendation Report” screen, I clicked “Non-Included Trans.” and saw that one of the vendors (Vendor Code: WILCO) has the following error:
“The document amount is greater than the max. amount allowed in the payment methods linked to the BP”
Upon checking, the “PCF-W” Payment Method linked to WILCO does not have any restrictions, nor does WILCO have any credit/commitment limit set. I have also appropriately defined the Dummy Business Partner Bank (under Payment Terms) as well as checked the “Included” box for PCF-W on the Payment Run-Payment Methods screen.
Could anyone please help me on this?
    Salamat,

PS - have found other posts indicating that clips smaller than 2s or sometimes 5s, or "short files" can cause this. Modern style editing often uses short takes ! Good grief I cannot believe Apple. Well I deleted a half a dozen short sections and can export, but now of course the video is a ruined piiece of junk and I need to re-do the whole thing, the sound etc. which is basically taking as much time as the original. And each time I re-do it I risk again this lovely error -50 and again trying to figure out what thing bugs it via trial and error instead of a REASONABLE ERROR MESSAGE POINTING TO THE CLIP IT CAN'T PROCESS. What a mess. I HATE this iMovie application - full of BUGS BUGS BUGS which Apple will not fix obviously, since I had this product for a few years and see just hundreds of hits on Google about this error with disappointed users. Such junk I cannot believe I paid money for it and Apple does not support it with fixes !!!
If anyone knows of a GOOD reasonably priced video editing program NOT from APPLE I am still looking for suggestions. I want to do more video in future, but obviously NOT with iMovie !!!

  • Native resolution problem on Boot Camp running Windows 8.1 on Macbook PRO 15 (2011)

    Hello
Couple days ago I purchased a DELL U2414h display, and I came across some problems while trying to use it with Windows 8.1 on Boot Camp.
Everything works like a charm on MAC OS X and I get 1680x1050 resolution on my 2011 15 inch Macbook PRO, and 1920x1080 on the external DELL display.
The problem starts when I run Windows 8.1... I get my native resolution on the Macbook, but the maximum usable resolution on the external display is 1776x1000. There's an option to choose 1920x1080, but when I do that, the screen looks blurry. Is there any way to overcome this problem?
I'm using HDMI Adapter, and I installed all the drivers which were downloaded while installing the Boot Camp
    Cheers
    Patryk

No I haven't, but could it be the case? The same display with the same adapter works fine while running the MAC OS X.
But yeah, the adapter converts the mini display port to HDMI (as far as I know)
    Thanks for the reply

  • What is Non-Native Art

I am working with a customer file and came across an element that when selected is identified as Non-Native Art in the left edge of the control panel. It does not show up in the links pallet. This particular one is a square with a graduated screen. It appears grayscale but the eyedropper reveals it is composed of CMYK.
I am wondering what type of elements are Non-Native? What programs created them? How do they get in Illustrator?
    CS3
    Mac Pro
    OSX 10.5.6
    7 GIG RAM

Be careful with non-native art. I ran into this problem the other day (a pdf with a gradient made in InDesign that I opened in Illy) and found that the colours were not the same as in the original InDesign file. Probably colour settings were not the same in the two applications.
I solved the problem by writing down the gradient settings in the InDesign file and making a new gradient in Illy with the correct colours. I used a copy of the clipping mask shape and filled it with the new Illy gradient.
If the non-native gradient is angled you can drag the new gradient to match the tilt of the masked non-native object. Best to have the preview turned off while you do this, then you can see the masked object and snap the gradient to its corners.

  • Upgrade worked(?), apps back, but non-native apps won't open

Anybody having this problem....after 6 hours, iOS 5 update completed on my iPad2.  No error messages, all apps back where they belonged.  I thought I was one of the lucky few for which it all worked.
But..none of my non-native apps will even open - just a quick darkening of the screen and back to Home.
All native apps open and work.
    I have rebooted...nothing...
Should I try restoring again?  Or is there a way that would take less than 6 hours??
    Thanks

Exact same problem, I restored and it seemd to work again - so i put all my apps and movies back on and volla, it does the 'maximizing' animation as if the app is about to start loading then it just vanishs.. the built in apps all work but not a single other app loads

Help!

Exact same problem with my 2010 MBP 2.4ghz 4gb ram 10.6.8. iTunes said update was needed, Software Update ran with various updates including a security update, truthfully didn't pay much attention, I always install the Apple updates. After the restart it took 3-4 times longer than normal to get to the login screen, same to get to the desktop but I'm familiar with that occurring on update restarts. Unfortunately it got worse from there. Performed a full shutdown and startup. Same long boot.  After the desktop finally loads every mouse button press received a 2 minute beachball. I use menu-meters and both processors are under 10%. Waited a few minutes for disk utilities to launch, repair permissions estimates 3 hours for a typical <10 minute process. Activity monitor shows nothing over 10% CPU most of the time however ReportCrash pops to the top often. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. BTW zero problems until this update.
