Bad video file

i was doing some live capture with FCE HD, which is basically setting the easy setting to DV Converter, then just pull up 'capture' and click 'now' to record directly to the HD.
i've been doing this for months without any problems, then yesterday the system froze up when i hit the 'esc' key to finish the capture, giving me the spinning beach ball of death. after a while it wasn't going to improve, so i had to reboot.
now, the video file in the 'capture scratch' folder, instead of being named "lifeStory", it's now "LifeStory-av" and i can't import it or pull it up in any video programs or converters.
is there any way to fix the file? it's the only copy i have of it.

Not necessarily. Sometimes they're caused by failed captures as above, but if the drive was not correctly formatted, this may not be the case. If the drive is not in Mac OS Extended, then the file will segment based on the file size, and the -av file will be part of the whole media file and cannot be deleted to keep a complete QT movie.

  • Bad Video File Transfers

I have a Compaq Presario CQ60 and I am trying to transfer video files from a Panasonic pro video cam. The transfer seems to work fine until I go to view the video clips in any kind of viewer and then they play really "choppy". Has anyone else experienced problems with video file transfers?
According to a service rep at Panasonic, my laptop has above and beyond all the minimum system requirements for they cam as well as the editing software I have (Vegas 10). I can also find nothing wrong on the camera side of the equation.
Any help or thoughts would be great!

Your video card driver may be fine for something, but just not compatible with Premiere Elements 13/13.1.
For those with the display card error, the answers include
    a. assure your video card/graphics card driver version is up to date according to the web site of the manufacturer of the card -
if necessary consider a driver roll back.
    b. determine in Device Manager/Display Adapters if the computer is using 2 cards instead of 1
    c. delete the BadDrivers.txt file
the rationale for that deletion is found in post 10 of the following older post...principle applies to 13 as well as 9.
Re: Premiere Elements 9 Tryout Serious Display Problem
Have you looked for computer ATI card settings that might be more compatible with Premiere Elements 13/13.1?
When is the program crashing - just opening a new project or rather crashing if editing a particular video format at the Timeline level?

  • Quicktime doesn't open any video files (app loads, no video)

I've done my best to search for a solution, but I have come up with nothing.
Whenever I try to load any video files (.mov, .mp4, .avi, etc) Quicktime Player 10.1 opens, but no video file is displayed. Same results if I use the "open" command from within Quicktime. All of the videos play fine in VLC.
The only exception to this rule is when viewing a trailer on trailers.apple.com. If I "download" an HD trailer, Quicktime opens and begins to stream the trailer, however the ram runs away (8+gb instantly) and the computer starts chugging very badly.
In the old days I would have just reinstalled quicktime, however with how deeply it is integrated into Lion I am unsure of how to proceed (short of a clean install). Thanks in advance!

A previous poster with a Toshiba posted how he installed a generic driver. If I recall it was
    Uninstall the graphics driver.
Remove the display driver from Device Manager.
Reboot declining prompts to install a driver.
    Run the generic installer program.
I'll see if I can find the original post, I had it in my clipboard manager but that has the unfortunate habit of killing off its database every few months

  • How do I convert an m4a video file to anything else?

I need to edit out some video from an iPod converted video file. How do I do this?

I use a program called iSquint to convert files to iPod or H.264 format. This program can optimize the conversion for iPod or for TV and I think it should be able to convert your m4a files to H.264 for editing. It's free, so even if it doesn't help this particular problem, you can use it for converting other videos to your iPod. Get it at http://www.iSquint.com
If iSquint turns out to be useless for your purposes, there is also a program called VisualHub which does tons more than iSquint (including conversions for DVD, PSP, AVI, QT, TiVO, Flash, etc) but unfortunately it costs USD $23.32--which still isn't too bad considering what some companies would have you pay for similar functionality. It is linked to from www.iSquint.com or you can go directly to it here: http://www.techspansion.com/visualhub/
Good luck and hope this helps.

  • IPhone 4S keeps playing audio from a video file that is no longer on my phone.

If I'm listening to music and try to change tracks or pause with the earbud buttons the music fades out and starts playing audio from a video file. It will only play about 3-4 seconds and then stop. This also will happen when double clicking the home button to try and change tracks. When I do that the track skipping buttons won't work and there's no title for the short bit of audio that plays. The only way to get music to start playing again is to go into music and press play again. The music I had been listening to is sitting there paused. The audio from the mystery video file still sometimes plays even when you're in music and the only way you would know is the little play icon at the top right part of the screen. I have removed every video off of my phone and it still does it. This is really frustrating.

Sounds like a bad battery.  You'll need to bring the phone into Apple for evaluation.
I'm sure you've been using your phone as designed and properly backing up your data, so you should have minimal, if any data loss should the phone need to be replaced.

  • My avi video files are no longer supported in PRE9? Help!

I created a movie in premiere elements 9  several months ago.  My video was imported from avi files on my computer.  The avi files were originally downloaded from my camera.  Everything was fine and I even burned a near finished copy of my project on a DVD.  Now, several months later, I open up the project to put my final touches on it and notice that all the avi video files are red in the timeline.  On the organizer tab for my project under media type, it says, "offline".  So, I clicked on the avi file and it asks me to find it.  I find it (the files have not moved) and click on it and I get this error, "Error Message. This type of file is not supported, or the required codec is not installed."  This is very strange.  Do you have any ideas? My operating system is Windows 7.

I kind of suspected MJPEG (just a hunch, as two other CODEC's, commonly wrapped in an AVI, DivX and Xvid, seldom every play correctly to start with).
Now, there are many "flavors" of MJPEG. It is an older CODEC (or really type of CODEC, as there are so many versions), that was ressurected for use in mostly (then) stills cameras, with video capabilities added. It is not a bad CODEC, but each camera mfgr. has tweaked it for their purposes. This can create issues. MJPEG is not the "universal," that say DV-AVI Type II is. Canon will have a version, Nikon another and Panasonic yet another. They all show as MJPEG, but will be a bit different. A similar analogy can be drawn with Camer RAW files - Canon's differ from Nikon's, which differ from Panasonic's, though they are all Camera RAW. Also, Nikon, for instance, is constantly changing what is in their NEF (Camera RAW) files, so that the newest will require the latest release of Adobe Camer RAW (ACR), to be processed in Photoshop. MJPEG is similar to that, with fewer variations - but still individual variations.
Now, there could well be reasons that things have changed. The first one to strike me would be that you installed the software that came with that camera, and included its specific version of the MJPEG CODEC, then later removed say the camera's utility, taking that specific version of MJPEG away. You might well have others, but PrE is having a hard time matching them up.
In that article I linked to on MJPEG, I mention two popular MJPEG CODEC's, Morgan and MainConcept. Both are rather generic MJPEG CODEC's, and when MJPEG resurfaced, they worked fine for most such files. However, as time has elapsed, and camera mfgrs. tweaked and tweaked, they are less likely to work 100%. Once, they were the "silver bullet" for MJPEG - but not so much any more.We began seeing more users, with either, or even both, still having issues with newer MJPEG CODEC's. As most camera mfgrs. ship a copy of their specific version, somewhere along with the camera, it became common practice to recommend installing that specific version from the specific camera's utility disc. Unfortunately, that was not always easy to do. Some included their version of MJPEG as a separate installation (best way, IMHO), but many incorporated it into the camera's driver installation (still good), and then there are those instances, where the specific version of the MJPEG CODEC is installed along with other utilities on the disc, such as maybe a little editing program, or a file cataloging utility. Scant mention is ever made of the specific MJPEG CODEC, and how it is installed on one's system. The latter method seems to be the most common now. I have the full utilities, including the camera's own editing programs, installed for my Canon, my Nikon and my wife's Panasonic. That means that I have at least five (think that the total count is eight on my workstation) MJPEG CODEC's: one for Canon, one for Nikon, one for Panny, one Morgan and one MainConcept.
What camera produced those MJPEG AVI files?
Do you have that camera's editing and cataloging utility installed?
Do you have the utility disc for that camera?
Have you removed any such editing, or cataloging utility, between the time that the files worked, and when they did not?
I do not believe that any version of PrE actually installs any version of MJPEG (could be wrong here), though they work with, and include various other MainConcept (mostly MPEG) CODEC's. That means that one will need to install an MJPEG CODEC, and the one specific to that camera, might be required.
You obviously do have an MJPEG CODEC (or more), installed in your OS. As there is a vast difference between playback of an AV file, and editing that same file, it could be that PrE is just not able to use the installed version, with those files. As it once was able to edit them, I am guessing that something has changed, and it could be as simple as cleaning out one of the supplied utilities for the camera, that also removed its specific version of the MJPEG CODEC.
As PrE does not install the specific version of the MJPEG CODEC, many recommend not trying to edit such material. I am not of that mindset, but do allow that one might have to do some extra work (and work that is NEVER outlined in the camera mfgr's literature - unfortunately), to get things to work. I had to install a bunch of programs, that I will never directly use, just to be able to edit the MJPEG AVI's from my family's cameras, in both PrE and PrPro. I hate having to do that, as it fills up my HDD with stuff, that will otherwise never be used - but I need the specific CODEC, and it's only available to be installed WITH other software - all too common nowadays, and a mistake on the part of the camera mfgrs. IMO.
Good luck, and I hope that with the specific MJPEG CODEC, you will be back up and editing your footage, as you were once able to do.
    Hunt
PS - sorry for writing an entire encyclopedia there, but MJPEG is not as simple as it could be.

Oh, baby! This bad boy flies!! Here's what to expect:
I had 40,000 images in Aperture 3 and it was dog slow at everything. I installed 3.1 update today. It took 5 minutes to update the database and then behaved marginally better than before at ASIC library navigation. I was disappointed.
Then I QUIT the app. It took a couple of hours to "update files for sharing" with a counter that went to 110,000 images. So it must have updated every thumbnail and variation of preview. Turned it back on , and BAM. Came up fully in seconds. Paused for 10 seconds ten everything was lickrty split. For the first time ever, I can use the Projects view with all 791 projects and scroll quickly. I even put it in photos modevand whipped thru all 49,000 images!
Haven't done anybprocessing yet, but i'm liking it!!

MacBook Pro  / Mozilla Firefox / Netflix / Silverlight Update solved - DON'T DWNLOAD FROM NETFLIX
I solved this problem tonight. I have a MacBook Pro with 10.5.8. I know, it's old. But I love my Netflix and I recently noticed that Firefox plays Netflix much better.  Then I suddenly got this message that I needed to download the latest Silverlight - it only takes 30 seconds! - WRONG.   However, after much searching, I finally did the steps in order and it worked.
This was after repeatedly downloading Silverlight from the Netflix site without success.  So here's what I did:
    1. Went to http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/Get-Started/Install/Default.aspx
    2. Followed the directions. I felt like such an idiot for not doing it right before.
    3. Go to your hard drive and search for "Silverlight" to locate ANY existing Silverlight files: .dmg, etc.
[also check your Libary/ Internet Plug-ins, but the above search is faster]
    4. Drag it all to the trash and empty it.
    5. Go back to the Get  Silverlight page and click on the Install on that page, not the Netflix site.
    6. Note the steps for Safari or Mozilla Firefox - I wanted Firefox, so I follwed those instructions.
    7. Once it's installed, close all the browsers and Restart that bad boy. Right away.
    8. Open a browser, go to Netflix and proceed to joyfully rot your brain with Netflix content. Yay!

  • Still bad video quality

even is catalyst cs 5.5 two of my problems do not resolve.
bad video quality in fullscreen. i have some videos for offline view (768x576 @ 2600 kbps) but still fullscreen view is messed up, all blocky, not proper video interpolation. in vlc or any other player the flv file looks fine!
the videos also have a 4:3 ratio and show white borders in fullscreen on a 16:9 screen in letterbox, how can make the borders black?
    is there any solution?

    Hi
    as example
Creating a PAL movie in iMovie HD 6 then import this into a NTSC iDVD project
    • Works but with a losy quality
I do use JESDeinterlacer3.2.2 and let this do the PAL to NTSC conversion
Now burned as an NTSC iDVD project
    • Best result possibly without buying PRO-applications for $$$$$$$
This way should work the other way around too.
Most modern PAL DVD-players can playback NTSC (if TV is old in Bl/W)
Most modern NTSC DVD-players can't playback PAL
If playbacked on a Mac PAL or NTSC is of no interest.

  • Sony just isn't helping me. I'm still having trouble transferring my NX3 video files.

Well, I'm still having trouble transferring my NX3 video files to my editing software.  Sony suggested using the Sony Content Browser but that doesn't work. Sony just can't seem to help me. If the scene shot on the card is longer than 10 minutes, 4 frames of audio is lost from each file.  So if you shoot 60 minutes straight (say a wedding, you loose audio every 10 minutes)  I guess this doesn't sound important, unless it happens just as the bride is saying "Yes" in her vows.
My original post is as follows:
Sony NXCAM (NX-3) drops audio tracks when importing into FCPX and Premiere.
I called Sony on Feb 13, 2015. I spoke with Doug (case no. 661972). I've been using my NX-3 for about 3 months. I'm still testing Sony NX-3. Looking for a way to transfer the video and audio without dropping audio frames. I didn't catch it at first, I mean it's only a few audio frames. It seems to happen with files over 12 minutes shooting. It seems that I can't upload the video/audio shot in my NX-3 to either my iMac (using FCPX nor Premiere) nor can I upload it to my PC (using Premiere) without 3 to 6 audio "frames" being dropped. When I spoke with Doug at Sony, a person I've actually spoke with in the past, he seemed frustrated. I was speaking with him as a professional and was attempting to find a solution, he was being protective and wanted to place blame at other companies. He stated that the camera played back the files correctly so it isn't a Sony problem. I explained that it is a problem for all of us if we choose Sony as our purchase. He told me "you should all buy Canons next time." That kind of through me. How do you speak to that. I explained that I am just looking for a solution and he told me to call the software and computer companies. Doesn't Sony realize that just because the camera works, that isn't the end of the road. You need to put the video into a devise to edit the video. I asked him what software would he recommend to a professional to use to edit footage taken by the Sony, he no reply. All I received from Doug was a really bad feeling about Sony. I've been a Sony "shooter" for over 34 years. I still can't believe the way I was treated. Not sure now what path I will take with this. But I surely need to tell everyone (all of my associates who have been asking me how I like my new camera) what response I received from Sony. Buy a Canon. By the way, I asked if Sony might have another camera of the same type that didn't drop audio. Doug didn't know. Really strange. Is Doug not happy with his prosition with Sony?

    Auto Correct:
As far as I'm aware this cannot be turned off. Someone may prove me wrong on this point
    CDDB Update:
Again, as far as I'm aware this cannot be done. You could use WMP to update the files then import them into iTunes.
    Music Deletion:
iTunes seems to only ask you if you want to delete a file if the file is located in its library folder. In the Preferences>Advanced>General section try changing your iTunes Music Folder to the folder where all your music is stored and it should ask you if you want to move files to the recycle bin when you delete them.
    Library Update:
This is a feature I with iTunes would introduce. When you delete or move a file iTunes loses track of it. What it needs to be able to do is first check to see that all the existing files in the library are still there, and remove the ones that aren’t, then it needs to search for new tracks.
It can search for new tracks but if you have renamed a file, then it will be in the library twice, one is the old file (which will no longer play because it doesn’t exist) and the other is the new file.
The way I now avoid iTunes annoyances in relation to file names and folder organisation is I let iTunes sort it all out for me. Selecting "Keep iTunes Music folder organised" and "Copy files to iTunes folder when adding to library" will get iTunes to sort your music into Artist folders, then within the Artist folders are Albums, then within the album folders are the actual files, which are named Track Number Artist. For example Coldplay - Clocks will be named 05 Clocks.mp3.
WARNING: Selecting "Keep iTunes Music folder organised" will copy all the music in your library to the iTunes Music folder. You must have enough Hard Disk space to do this.
...that wound up longer then I thought it would. Hope you can make sense of it all.
    Cheers,
    Ben

  • Correct Video file format for itouch

I download some videos on the internet, then i convert them to mp4 and sync them to my ipod touch. But how come the quality of these videos are very bad. Everything appears on the screen is not clear. It is completely different to the videos that i watch on Youtube ( an app in ipod touch) High definition, supper clear. Anyone knows any video file format that make the quality better to watch ! Pls let me know. I tried Quicktime, mpg. For these files, i was able to put them into my itunes but i could not sync them. Dont know why? I even tried avi, mov, but i could not even put them into my itunes. The only file format that accepted by itunes was mp4 . But the quality of the videos after syncing them to ipod was very awful. Pls let me know what i can do.

Usually the file converting software will have a preset for an iPod Touch and all you have to do is select it and the software does the rest. Handbrake is one of those software to convert videos.
Below is a quick synopsis of the specs I use to convert a video to be viewed on an iPod Touch:
Understand the video file requirements for iPod Touch videos. Before jumping in and attempting to convert a file, it may be beneficial to understand the overall video requirements that a file must meet in order to play on an iPod Touch. The requirements include:
    Video Format: Mp4, MOV, MV4
    Video Size: Up to 640 X 480
Video Framerate: Up to 30 frames/second
Video Bitrate: up to 2.5Mbps for MP4
    Audio: AAC up to 160kbps
    Step 1
Open iPod Touch video converter and choose video file you would like to convert.
    Step 2
Choose destination file format in the iPod Touch video converter software. Most often, the software will have an iPod touch setting to choose. Choose this setting and an option window will open.
    Step 3
Customize your iPod Touch video settings. Most software will present default settings to convert your video file. However, you can often change these settings to enhance video and audio quality. However, increasing video and audio quality will increase the time it takes to convert your video file

My current version of Chrome is having problems, too! It's so annoying. Anyone have any suggestions now? I basically can't view or download any PDFs because of this.
Does anyone else think this is a problem not only with Adobe? I would think Apple would have something to do with this? Wouldn't they get some idea from the developer versions that no browser can open PDFs while running Lion!? Pretty bad customer service on the part of a company that prides itself on being VERY customer-friendly. Wouldn't you say?

does anyone have any idea ?
    Thanks in advence ...

Let's focus attention on just the Sony. (What model and what resolution are you shooting?)
    For now, I'll assume you're shooting 1080i.
Take a representaive clip  into a new sequence. Add a title.
In your sequence, make sure field dominance is set to Upper.
Set render settings to Pro Res 422.
After rendering, export QT self contained.
Import into Compressor (I'm now referring to v3.5).
Select the 90 minute Best quality DVD preset.
Open frame controls and turn on (click the gear icon). Set Resize filter to Best.
Submit burn and check quality on TV.
    Good luck.
