Bad volume
I am having trouble with my itunes 6. It seems that one of my imported cd's has a much lower volume level than any of my other cd's. During regular cd playback this doesn't matter, but I made a random mix and any song from that particular cd are much quieter. I checked the original disk (which I have) and everything is quieter on that one too, like it happened at the mixing studio. My question is this: is there a way with itunes or a similar program where I can adjust the volume levels on these specific mp3's in itunes and make them so they're the same level as the others in the mix? I am at a loss. Any input would be helpful.
Thanks,
Bill
Hi guys. Thanks for the responses. I tried the "Get
Info" by ctrl clicking trick, but didn't find an
options tab listed. Don't know just what the problem
is there. Maybe my operating system (Jaguar) is old.
But Jim, I think I will try your program since it
sounds like it will solve my difficulties. Thanks
again.
Did you select all of the tracks and Get Info on the whole batch? The Options tab will only appear if you Get Info on a single track. It should be there regardless of your OS.

A dial is used on most of the Toshiba Sat notebooks now for external sound volume.
However in order to get it to work you have to turn and turn and TURN just to get a little volume change.
This was bad design guys...Hi,
You may install a "BIOS update" using the following link (Ensure the power adapter is plugged in while doing this) :
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp66501-67000/sp66843.exe
If this does not work. Then please perform a System Recovery by tapping the F11 key continously while the unit is powering on. This is done just to get a 'Software & Firmware Malfunction' situation out of the way (Ensure to backup data before performing the Reovery)
If the BIOS update or the System Recovery does not resolve the issue, then I would advise you to contact HP via Chat/Phone for a Repair Service to be initiated for this unit.
http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/support.html

I hope you find this info helpful. If so, please hit the kudos button below if you would like to thank me.

Recovering data from bad partitions
I have an iMac G5. Recently I created 3 partitions on the internal hard drive; one running the latest Tiger version (my primary volume), another running the version of Tiger straight from the disk (no updates), and one running 10.3.4.
I went out of town for a week and after returning booted up. The primary volume booted (the one running the latest version of Tiger) but I got the endless spinning wheel. After a while I shut down by holding down the power button. When I rebooted, the computer could not read any of the partitions (got a gray circle with a slash through it).
Running a hardware diagnostic turned up no malfunctions.
I managed to boot using the software restore disks that came with the computer. Using Disk Utility I erased the partition housing 10.3.4 (since all of my personal data is on the primary partition) and reinstalled the software.
That volume boots fine now.
Disk Utility, however, can not repair the other two volumes (they appear grayed-out in the volumes list).
I ran Disk Warrior, but it hangs for a very long time when in step 5 (locating directories... I get a message "speed inhibited due to disk malfunction"... but it continues to churn away). Ran it for almost 24 hours before aborting.
I've also tried retriving my data using Data Rescue II (downloaded and run from my 10.3.4 volume), but it also gets hung up reading my bad volumes... maybe I would have better luck booting the app from a disk???
All I really want to do is retrieve my data, put it on an external drive, then wipe and zero out my internal drive and reinstall.
Any suggestions? Am I on the right track or totally lost? (I'm something of a back-end illiterate)I would try to let DiskWarrior finish the rebuild process. DiskWarrior has been known to take up to several days to rebuild a volume that's severely damaged.
My G5 recently had a hard freeze and had to be force-shut-down. It would not power back on, and needed to have the power switch/power supply/logic board replaced. On a HD I pulled from it before sending it in for repair, I had 4 partitions. While they all mounted, some had errors that Disk Utility couldn't fix. DiskWarrior was able to rebuild them all, and during one of them, displayed the same "speed inhibited due to disk malfunction" warning you were receiving. I don't think that was a sign of any real hardware problems with the hard drive, just that the directory of that particular volume was severely damaged. After the rebuild of that partition (which did take several hours), there was a "Rescued Items" folder on the root level of the volume that contained salvaged items.
I think the results you'll get with DiskWarrior will probably be your best bet, but it may take a while for the rebuild to complete.
Hope this helps....

XServe RAID volume does not mount
Without any modification to the system, a panic log from our XServe indicates:
"Thu Jan 18 17:28:58 2007
panic(cpu 0): HFS: corrupt VH on PBSRaid1, sig 0x4100, ver 0, blksize 0"
The volume PBSRaid1 does not mount anyway from that date.
Diskutil reports:
"Verifying volume “disk2s3”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Invalid extent entry
The volume PBSRaid1 needs to be repaired.
Volume check failed."
DiskUtil is unable to repair the volume.
My configuration is:
XServe bi-G3 1GHz, MacOSX Server 10.3.9
XServe RAID with 5 disks RAID5 on the left side (OK) and 4 disks RAID5 on the right side (the bad volume)
All the controls are "green" and nothing wrong appeared in the events log obtained via RAID ADmin.
Any suggestion to repair are welcome, as we have many data from confocal microscopy on that volume.
Thanks
Jean-Pierre
XServe bi G3-1GHz (oct 2003)+ XServe RAID Mac OS X (10.3.9)Right, Dave.
DW 4 rebuilt a preview folder which contains all the files in correctly named folders.Only 3 files among thousands has been saved in a Rescue folder !
It also restored the right volume label, lost in DiskUtil, fsck, pdisk and others.
Very nice tool.
While DW was building its preview, the disk 9 lighted red and a lot of failures of the controler 2 appear in the events log of the XServe RAID.
At this time, the RAID is rebuilding with our spare disk.
I think we have to change both the disk 9 and the controler 2 despite it lights green currently.

Repairing volume with techtool deluxe
My MBP is on the protection plan which means I have techtool deluxe. The software has found an error in the volume. The directions for the software state to restart the mac from the appple menu and hold down the C key while starting the MBP with the cd in the drive. This supposedly is going to start the MBP from the cd and start techtool deluxe's repair programs. My problem is that when I restart holding the C key my MBP just starts up normally. Am I not doing it correctly? Does C key mean the apple/cmd key? Does C key mean the ctrl key?
Has anybody ever used techtool deluxe to repair a bad volume?Do not use TT Deluxe to repair your drive. It is not compatible with Intel Macs. Instead use Disk Utility. Do the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X. -
Hello.
We're running a NW6.5.8 machine on a HP Proliant ML350 G3. The server works
well since several years. Three weeks ago the server makes some problems.
After restarting the machine the memory runs low after 3 or for days. I
can't see a reason for this.
Do you have an idea for this?
Here is my config.txt of this machine:

; This is a sample of the slp configuration file.
; Two types of entries can be made: 1) DA entries, 2) SA Register Filters.
; The DA entry allows static configuration of a known DA. This would be
used
; when the DA was out of multicast range and DHCP was not being used to
; configure the DA.
; The static DA configuration format is as follows 'DA <addr type>,
<addr>'.
; The first word must be "DA". The addr type is the address type.
Currently, only
; IPV4 has been defined. IPV6 will be defined in the future. The addr is
; the address specified.
; The following is an example of a static DA.
; DA IPV4, 130.1.1.1
; The SA Register Filter would be used when the administrator wanted all
services
; of a specific service type being mapped to a single scope. For example,
; the administrator wanted all "lpr" printers being registered to scope
"printer".
; The format is as follows: 'REGISTER TYPE "<type name>" to SCOPE "<scope
name>"'.
; The parser will look for REGISTER, TYPE, and SCOPE as keywords followed
by quote on
; a single line. Example:
; REGISTER TYPE "lpr" to SCOPE "eng"
; The last line must contain a line feed and char return. A semi-colon
specifies a
; comment.

; This is a sample of the slp configuration file.
; Two types of entries can be made: 1) DA entries, 2) SA Register Filters.
; The DA entry allows static configuration of a known DA.
A semi-colon
specifies a
; comment.

Problem with crashing since update to Yosemite 10.10.2
I have a Macbook Pro (15inch, Mid 2009) that has been trucking along fine for years. I upgraded the RAM from 4GB to 8GB about a year ago, no issues on that front. I then updated the OS from Mavericks to Yosemite not to long ago and began to experience an unstoppable loop of crashing that would at most get me as far as to the desktop for a few minutes. I ran Recover HD and it told me my hard drive had a bad volume in it and that it was unrepairable, that I would have to reformat it completely, luckily I have a Time Machine backup of the day just before this began to happen. I figured at worst the hard drive was old and that I might as well take the opportunity to upgrade to an SSD. So I did just that, went from the stock 500GB Western Digital drive to a Intel 256 SSD, installation was no sweat. The process afterwards when installing a fresh clean OS was the painful part as I ran into another issue where "Essentials.pkg" error was preventing me from completing the reinstall of Mavericks/Yosemite, the problem as far as I could tell was that it supposedly did not like my aftermarket 8GB ram. Since I had no back up of my old Apple OEM Memory (misplaced it somewhere) I ended up having to borrow my friends Macbook Pro and hot swap his stock memory temporarily into my Macbook to just complete a fresh install of the OS. Luckily I was able to get everything back up and running and the SSD made my Macbook Pro incredibly fast, Time Machine worked flawlessly everything back to normal like it never happened.
Until today, Just a few days after this whole fiasco, I began to experience the same issue again. The symptoms would start with having Chrome loaded up and running, Chrome would begin to crash, unable to show a webpage no matter how many times I refreshed or went to another website, a minute or two later of this happening and then my OS would completely crash and it would give me that splash screen that your computer has been restarted unexpectedly to continue press any button etc...
I have the report listed below, this is the most recent crash report that just happened now, since I have no idea how to read it I was hoping for some help here to maybe figure out what exactly is going on. I don't have the crash reports from before the whole fiasco happened, I can only imagine it is the same in nature.

Hi Tim,
tried to fix with disc that came with the computer but had a lot of problems with bad volumes .
Was that original Disc a 10.3 one, that cannot be used to fix a 10.4.x Drive.
It sounds like you need another Hard Drive to install to then try to recover your data, files, etc.
You must repair the HD, if Disk Utility or fsck should fail to repair it, your best bet is DiskWarrior from Alsoft, you'll need the CD to boot from if you don't have another boot drive...

Your best bet is DiskWarrior, you need the CD/DVD though.

This one would require another HD with plenty of space to recover to.
You should use another Boot Disk or other Mac with this one in Target mode to do the recovery.
They have a free demo to see what it could recover. -
Hey Guys,
I have an issue and I would really appreciate any help. My hard drive went out on computer, the hard drive got replaced and I used recovery software to recover everything. I have a "iPhoto" file, that has my whole iPhoto library on it. When I start to import the photos, it goes almost to 85% then it says Error, cant import photo bad volumes (something like that). Can you guys please help? Is there anything I can do?Well don't import that "iPhoto file", you'll end up with a mess of duplicates, triplicates and lose all your organisation.
Next, try open the Library: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu see if you can choose this Library.
If that fails, try Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

How do I reduce the timeout on read errors?
I'm trying to backup a system that's developing some bad blocks. They are getting numerous enough that I can't do any significant backup operation without hitting the Dreaded Beach Ball.
My computer will "seize up" for 2 solid minutes while it does - I don't know, what is it doing? Reading the bad block over and over hoping it'll turn good???? And then my computer will unfreeze for 1 second, and then it'll seize up for 2 more solid minutes.
Literally. Productivity is impossible. If I start something like "repair disk permissions" on the bad volume, I literally have to TURN THE COMPUTER OFF to escape the situation. (yes I suppose force-quitting Disk Utility could work, if I can wait the 8 minutes for cmd-option-esc to work, and be ready to click at exactly the 1 second the system is functional, and wait 4-8 more minutes for it to work...
Anyway it's obvious that somehow, the timeout on disk I/O errors has been cranked way the **** up to 120 seconds or something. How do I turn it down to something reasonable like, gosh, 120ms?I am really sorry, but to get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since this is a commercial printer. You can do this at HP Enterprise Business Community.
I hope this helps.
Thank You.

MacBook Pro Airport switches off
Hi
Had my new 2.53GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo for a few months now and today for the first time my built in airport card, switched itself off.
When I went to Network Settings and clicked turn airport on, nothing happened.
So I then restarted and the start up wheel froze mid spin, so I took out battery and restarted all back up and running, later today the same problem occurred again.
Just to check it wasn't a broadband router Issue I switched on my old macbook pro, and the airport worked fine and connected me to the internet.
Any Ideas I have just updated the OS to 10.5.7 yesterday I think.Same happens to me. I suspect it happens most often when my system is hot/warm.
MacBook Pro 17, 10.5.7 9J61, 2.6GHZ, 4GB.
The airport suddenly stops working. Sometimes the network preferences dialog wont open. Other times it will open, but I can never start the airport.
Othertimes, the system simply freezes, nothing will move. I've had this happen three times in a row, with me rebooting each time.
So I took my Mac to a service center. The guy ran Tech Tools Deluxe and it reported bad volume links (or something or another), so he re-installed the OS.
When I got it home, I restored via my Time Machine, but the mac is freezing or the airport is turning off now after five days of trouble free operation. The disk tests are clean. So the bad volume info on the disk was due to me restarting my computer, not the root cause.
So I'm going to have to run my system back to the service center. -
Blue screen after Error 37: a bad filename or volume was encountered
I get a PAGEFAULT_IN_NONPAGEDAREA blue screen after I encounter multiple Error 37: a bad filename or volume was encountered.
Anyone encounter this issue and how to you send info to apple for them to fix their buggy code?
Their support of code which will run bug-free on vista seems to be lacking (I understand there are two parties to this marriage).
Help anyone?I noticed a few days ago that (at least on my box) Quicktime seems to have "issues" with >31 characters anywhere in the file path.
Is it possible that you have some folder along the way to your movie that has more than 31 charaters?
Shorten if necessary and see if that works.

"A Bad Filename or volume name encountered" ?!!!
I searched but I didnt find an answer for this problem. I get the message "Bad Filename or volume name encountered" when I try to play a video file with Quicktime. When I try to add it to my playlist on iTunes it doesnt add it. All of this happened after I converted the file to a Quicktime format (.mov). Also I tried to convert it to iPod video format (.mp4) and the same thing happened. I actually converted some other files to those two formats and they worked. I changed the video size and frame rate and the audio bit rate , sample rate, channel around to match the iPod requirements but it still didnt work. Does anyone know what I should do?!
Windows XPactuially providing as much detail is best to get an answer. Like what are you missing? Where did you get this video from? what did you use to convert the video? Did you follow the instrucitons to convert the video to a .mov format and then to a .mp4 format? You see as much information is best to get an educated answer. Since your new here you didnt know that so your ok. And you did something MANY people dont seem to do and thats actually search b4 you posted.
Thanks

Bad Position Volume Button!
Anybody else have a problem with the volume button getting pressed as you hold the iPad2 in your lap? I ssit on the couch, feet on an ottoman, iPad2 propped on my lap with the Smart Dcover folded under, and as I shift the iPad around, the volume button will decrease! It seems to me this is a bad position for a toggle switch on an edge that is frequently positioned against your lap! With it in this place, there needs to be a lock, either software or hardware, to keep it from fluctuating. Any thoughts?
Is it not in the same position as on the original. No matter where they put it, someone will complain that it is in a bad position.
Perhaps you should condition yourself to use the device that you have, not the one that does not exist.
Going on two weeks with an iPad 2 and have never accidentally changed the volume.
