Balancing iPhoto and Picasa...or do I even need Picasa?

I use iPhoto for business purposes, taking pictures of all the items I make as a handcrafted jewelry designer. Only use my Coolpix 4500 for this purpose. Recently received a Kodak which I am using for personal picts.
What I would LIKE to do is have both business and personal picts uploaded to iPhoto, but kept separate without my having to move them into separate albums. Is this a possibility?
If not, how do I keep personal photos to remain just in Picasa?
Seems this should be a matter of setting preferences in both. If so, what should they be?

TD,
Hopefully one last question. I did not purchase iPhoto Library Manager, but downloaded to evaluate its use before buying it, as its marketing states. Did set up another Library, however now in my attempt to import, I seem to be in my "new" library, and can't get into my old/business library where I am attempting to import. Am receiving a message saying that before importing a registration # is needed, which means purchase. I have no intention of purchasing IF this is not going to work for me, and so far, I have not been able to evaluate it.
My questions...is there a way to import at this stage before purchasing, can I toggle between both libraries and if not how do I get back to my original settings so that I can at least import, see and use my business photos?
Grateful thanks

  • Can't reinstall IPhoto and IMovie after reinstallation of the operative system.

I made and reinstallation of the entire operative system of my Mac. But now having the MAc oS X Lion 10.7.5 I can't reinstall some apps as IPhoto and IMovie. They said I need the 10.9 version.
    How am I proceed?
    Thanks'

Download Mavericks from the Mac App Store, or install those applications from a DVD; iLife 11 DVDs are available from sources such as Amazon and eBay, and if your computer's incapable of running Mavericks, it'll have come with disks which can be used to install them.

  • Do I even need more backup?

..Not necessarily a Mountain Lion question, but still:
I use my iMac for my business, can't take any chances losing stuff...
...But maybe this is an overkill:
    1. Time Machine is doing it's job, backing up those critical folders to my Ext. HD.
    2. I'm subscribed to a $27/year Cloud backup service that does its job every night.
    3. I use Tri-BACKUP 6 to MIRROR my HD to my Ext. HD once a week, so I have an alternative, updated startup disk in case of emergency.
    4. I use the same program for incremental nightly backups — but it does not work well (that program is too complicated and quirky, I must admit)...
    ...And I wonder, do I even need #4 ?...
    Thanks!

You can never have too many backups. I've used Tri-Backup and it works well. Once you have it set up you don't need to change anything, so it can't be that complicated. Nevertheless, here are some alternatives you may investigate:

  • Can iPhoto and Picasa co-exist?

I am using OS X, my wife has a Vista PC, our huge photo collection is on an external NAS.
We both use Picasa to access our photos - me, I have to boot into Vista to do so, since there still is no Mac version for Picasa.
What I would LIKE to do though, is using iPhoto on my Mac while my wife uses Picasa on her PC. I guess I could use Hazel to automatically add all photos to iPhoto that are dropped into a folder on our NAS. And tell iPhoto to store all photos on the NAS. But I guess I am missing something big here, right?
Did anyone try that before? Is it possible? Or am I dreaming?

    The answer is Yes... but...
If you use iPhoto in Referenced mode you can do this. Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your NAS. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You are responsible for file management. You put the pics on the NAS, you remove them yourself after deleting them from iPhoto. Essentially you're telling iPhoto 'Don't touch my pics' and this includes on the way in and the way out.
    2. You cannot rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them. Nor can you move them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers. But then again, you are.
Downsides? iPhoto has no cross platform ability whatever. Edits you make in iPhoto or via iPhoto will not be available to your Wife unless you export them back to the NAS. Don't move the Library to the NAS, folks have reported issues (up to and including database corruption) with Libraries on a NAS. Also, depending on the Format of the NAS there can be rare problems with the jpegs losing their file suffixes and becoming .exe files. (This can be easily repaired with a batch file renamer such as Name Mangler).
My best suggestion: create a test library. Set to Referenced Mode. Import 100 pics and see how things go. Play with it and see how things hang together or not.
Or change your wife to a mac.

  • IPhoto does not let me view my pictures before freezing up. I updated to the new version today and now it won't even fully open the program before quitting unexpectedly.

I have a laptop with iOS 10.9.3 and today I upgraded my iPhoto to version 9.5.1. When I tried to look through my pictures, I would click on an event and then click one of the picture thumbnails to see it larger, it would slow down and then show that picture, but it wouldn't let me scan left or right, and it wouldn't let me back up into the screen of thumbnails. After updating iPhoto, I can't even run the program. It opens a gray window and shows the thinking wheel, then the program quits unexpectedly. I also tried restarting the computer and that didn't work.

    Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder:
    User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.

  • My IPhoto Library is unreadable Tried everything recommended even deleted IPhoto and I still get the error message

    Hi
I keep getting the error message  (photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable ) I've tried everything that has been suggested, I've even deleted Iphoto and reinstalled it ,but this doesn't work, I even reinstalled Lion, without success. I've checked for virus s and that is ok. Any ideas as to what the problem is and how can I solve it.
    Regards
    Richard

    Try this solution:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1.  Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    2. Open the library package like this.
    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    4. Drag the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects. Your original libraruy will not be affected. It will still exist in case you want to try other fixes on it.

  • Is it possible to use one respository between iPhoto and Picasa?

Quick background: I have ~1k photos sitting on a file server on my LAN. Currently there is a Windows machine with Picasa using the file server as it's library (for both adding new photos and editting). I recently purchased a Mac Mimi and was hoping to use the same photo respository in iPhoto.
iPhoto Research: From what I've found thus far iPhoto is a big fan of managing the "library" and will not be real happy to play with others in this respect.
The Question: Is it possible to set up iPhoto to manage folders the same way Picasa does so I can have both machines using the same "library"? OR Can I set up an iPhoto Library and have Picasa use that, without out messing up the library so it becomes unusable by iPhoto?
The Bottomline: I would really like to have just one respository for the photos and have both systems share it. I know, a pie in the sky idea.
    Thanks for any advice.

    jasontc:
The answer is yes. If you use the "alias" method (in iPhoto's Advanced Preference pane - don't copy files when importing) you can use your own source folder system. You can also share the source files with another image management application. There are some unique issues, however. Any edit of a photo by iPhoto is not seen by the other application as the edited version is saved in iPhoto's Modified folder. If the other application can perform edits on the source file and save the edits to the actual source file, iPhoto's thumbnail of that file will not reflect the change but the edit will display when you open the photo in iPhoto's edit window or use that photo in a book or slideshow. If iPhoto hasn't edited before hand. If iPhoto edits the other application's edited version the source file is not touched. Also any file added to an existing source folder has to be manually imported into iView and then moved within iPhoto from its roll to the roll representing the source folder it was placed in via the Finder. When moved in iPhoto the source file will physically be moved to that folder in the Finder. Hope I haven't confused you with this convoluted description.
So with some quirks you can use another application like iView MediaPro on the same set of source files.
I do the above with iPhoto and iView.

  • Even via time machine the new osx lion has deleted all my latest files in iPhoto and will only revert back to an old 2009 backup?

even via time machine the new osx lion has deleted all my latest files in iPhoto and will only revert back to an old 2009 backup?... Help?!

Have you verified that the original files are missing from the Originals/Masters folder?  There are time when the library might appear empty due to a damaged database file but still has the files.  If you can open the library package via the Finder to see if the files are really missing or just can't be seen by iPhoto there are fixes you can try.
If the files are there make a temporary, backup copy of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Iphoto 08 all the photos gone (even in Original and Data file)!

    Hi,
I was uploading pictures to my new Iphoto 08 and suddenly all my thumbnails for the albums were gone. So I tried to rebuild the library and then found that even in Iphoto Library (that I opened with Show Package) there isn't a single photo in data nor originals--only the folders for my events. This is very frustrating since these are all my photos from past four years. And I haven't activated Time-Machine Yet. Please let me know what I can do from here.

    Lunacht:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Where were you importing the photos from? Are there any files in those event folders? Do a search in your home folder for "Library6.iPhoto" and see what you find. If there's more than one then you have another library somewhere.
    Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

    iOS?  or OSX
OSX = Finder > Applications > iPhoto. Double click the app to open it.
The icon (alias) will then be back on the dock. Right click the Icon > Keep in Dock.
Icons dragged off the dock vanish in a puff of smoke.. they are only aliases (shortcuts)

Make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete  the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.

    1) The best way to relocate the iTunes library folder is to move the entire iTunes folder with all subfolders to the new path, then press and hold down shift as start iTunes and keep holding until prompted to choose a library, then browse to the relocated folder and open the file iTunes Library.itl inside it.
If you've done something different then provide some more details about what is where and I should be able to help.
    2) Purchases on the device should automatically transfer to a Purchased on <DeviceName> playlist, but it my depend a bit on whether automatic iCloud downloads are enabled. If there is a cloudy link then the transfer might not happen. You can use File > Devices > Transfer Purchases. In iTunes you should also check out iTunes Store > Quick Links > Purchased > Music > Not on this computer.
    3) Backup the device, then immediately restore it. In some cases you need to add a restore as new device into that equation. Obbviously not to be attempted until you're sure all your media is in your library. See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device should it be needed.
    4) I believe there is complimentary 1 incident 90-day support with hardware purchases, but no free software support for iTunes itself. AppleCare gets you a different level of support.

I was in iphoto and tried to edit a photo and computer froze.  I then tried to do a force quit but it still didn't do anything.  I tried this a few times.  After 5 hours I tried to shut off computer and it didn't do anything.  Should I just unplug it?

yes. the solution of last resort. now, as to why your computer froze when you were trying to edit a photo in iPhoto, I can't help you much. Maybe a lack of ram, maybe something else running in the background,  hogging system resources. try running disc utility and repairing preferences. Also check activity monitor while your machine is running so you can find out if there is a hog or not. if force quit doesn't work, there's not much else you can do. I'll leave it to someone else to suggest other possible solutions
