Balancing with two portal instances

We are planning on having two portal instances on s Sun T2000. Initially we will not have a load balancer in front of them. We have decided to do this for redundancy and maintenance (when one is being patched, the portal is still up). Would we still have the default install of webcache in each portal instance and configure each one of them do software load balancing?

Hi,
>> 3) Another option is to install WebCahce stand alone on a separate machine..and use it from both Portal instances. Redundancy here is recommended too. Then, you can cluster the stand alone instances as well.
I would defenitely recommend this option over the others. We did try various other options - but, we noticed that in other cases the Portlet Session was reset when the application flow hopped fro one system to another.
We were able to resolve it with a cconfiguration similar to the one mentioned above.

    Using administrator responsibility, first create 2 instance partitions.
    Then using the instances screen, create the 2 instances. Make sure you have setup the db links prior to that.
    Then assign appropriate orgs to the 2 instances.
    After that, the remaining setups (such as DC, defining plans etc.) should be repeated for instances.

    Coud you confirm you can ping sucecssfully both of two machine before?
    To check if the NLB status is green:
    In the Forefront TMG Management console, in the tree, click the Monitoring node.
    In the Alerts tab, check that NLB Started for each array member.
    In the Network Load Balancing Manager (nlbmgr), check the status of the current node for all clusters define. Repeat this for each member.

  • Installing two portal instances

    I have installed 9iAS 1.0.2.2.0 on a 9iDB on the same machine. I am now trying to install 9iAS 1.0.2.2.1 on another machine, connecting to the same database. When the installation request dad name, and schema name, I gave a different name to my first portal installation. The installation seems to have gone fine, but when I wanted to do the portal installation in the end, it says that i have insufficient Shared pool size. I have resized it in my init.ora, stop, started, checked in sql and I have more than enough space. I then noticed that the new schemas never got created in the database, only my second wireless schema got created. Can anyone PLEASE share some input on this? It is quite urgent.

    Hello Martin,
    The Central Services is in itself a instance and requires a unique system number. It looks to me like you have chosen the same system number(53) for your dialog instance ?
    Edit: oops, think I may have misread your post with all those 3's ..please confirm the system number for the dialog instance you are trying to install is different.

    both the applications gets deployed successfully and different ports get selected for both applications internally.
    the thing is when i stop one of the above instance, say instance1 the instance2 works fine and doesnt throw an error. the moment i start instance 1 both the instance gives the above stated error.
    Can anyone help??

(I am not aware exactly and have the impression that, as the second page is a child, I guess it would take the same session).I'm not sure what "sub-page" or "parent page" means to you. If you're just linking from one page to another, "parent" and "child" don't really make sense since page A links to page B and B links to A quite frequently.
    Assuming that you have to log in to access the site, it is likely that the two pages share the same middle tier application session. It is unlikely that the middle tier would hold the database session from the first request open waiting to see if the user eventually requested the second page. It is theoretically possible that you could code your middle tier this way but it is extremely unlikely that you would want to do so for a variety of reasons. So, when you say "would [the] session ... be changed", it is likely that the application session would be the same for both calls but that the database session would be different.

  • Best practices for a development/production scenario with ORACLE PORTAL 10G

    Hi all,
    we'd like to know what is the best approach for maintaining a dual development/production portal scenario. Specially important is the process of moving from dev. to prod. and what it implies in terms of portal availability in the production environment.
    I suppose the best policy to achieve this is to have two portal instances and move content via transport sets. Am I right? Is there any specific documentation about dev/prod scenarios? Can anybody help with some experiences? We are a little afraid regarding transport sets, as we have heard some horror stories about them...
    Thanks in advance and have a nice day.

    It would be ok for a pair of pages and a template.
    I meant transport sets failed for moving an entire pagegroup (about 100 pages, 1Gb of documents).
    But if your need only deals with a few pages, I therefore would direclty developp on the production system : make a copy of the page, work on it, then change links.

  • Reusing a repository manager across multiple portal instances

    Hi everyone
    I am currently implementing a Enterprise Portal, including KM, for a customer. This customer is utilizing two portal instances, one for intranet-users, the other for extranet-users. I am not entirely sure why this approach was chosen, since it was made before I was assigned to this project.
    This customer has an interesting requirement: that both portals will utilize the same file share as a KM repository. The idea is that intranetusers (i.e. salespeople etc) will create KM resources for customers. Resources belonging to a specific customer must not be accessible by other customers. Additionally, there may be documents which is only accessible by salespeople.
    So far we have implemented automated creation of these resources, including setting the authorisation on folder, as well as file level. This works very well when working with a FSDB repository manager on the intranet server. The issue is that the authorisation settings are obviously not reflected on the extranet-portal, since we have not figured out a way of reusing the same repository manager on the other portal.
    My question then is whether it is possible to create an FSDB repository manager on one of the portals and reuse it on the other. This would quite conveniently allows us to reuse authorisation settings across both portals.
    Does anyone know whether this is possible at all?
    If you need more info to answer this, do not hesitate to ask
    Best regards,
    Svein Gunnar Standnes

    Hi Svein,
    as I assume you know, if you use a CM Repository in FSDB mode folders and documents are stored in the file system, but metadata is stored in the database. Integrating a fileshare into two portals as a CM Repository in FSDB mode will lead to serious inconsistencies, as for example one document will have KM properties in one portal but no properties (or other) in the other, different version histories, and many more!
    The only way to integrate in both portals a fileshare would be as a File System Repository Manager in <b>write-protect (read-only) mode</b>. If the repository is not read-only in such a scenario, concurrent updates to a file by different users on different installations can leave the content of the file in a corrupt state.
    So to sum it up, in write mode I would definitely refrain from integrating the file share in two portals!
    Hope this helps,
    Robert

  • LOAD BALANCE (CSS) and Portal Port Number based on Instance Number

    Hi,
    My doubt is about LOAD BALANCE (CSS) and Portal Port Number based on Instance Number.
    I have to install 3 servers machines and 2 servers databases cluster. There will be a HIGH AVAILABILITY environment. There will be a MIGRATION and UPGRADE.
    Today there are 2 servers machines in Windows NLB. Today my production Portal is 6 6.20.
    Once, I did something for LABORATORY TEST. Migration (6 6.40) and Upgrade (7.0)in two other machines. But they were with Windows NLB. When I did the installation, for each server machine and during the instalation I had to give one Instance Number for each and in result there was a different Port Number for each.
    But I accessed both machines throught a virtual url(dns) with a specific port number. And it works!
    NOW, with a HARDWARE LOAD BALANCE _ CSS I don't know how to do.
    A guy who works with it  tell us that couldn't redirect one Port Number for different port numbers. He couldn't configure the CSS like this.
    My question is: Is he write? And if he is, there is a  way to give the same instance number for my 3 new Portal servers machines? Example: 5(02)00.
    Could you understand?
    I need help.
    Regards,
    cheers,
    Nivia

    Nivia,
    I have used F5 for load balancing, I am sure you can do the same with CSS. Yes, you can configure a virtual IP on the load balancer with standard ports (80 or 443) and load balancing the traffic to multiple servers with different ports. You can have different ports for each instance.

  • CF 10 Load-Balancing with Remote Instances

    I was reading an article on Clustering/LB/HA using CF8, but have not found any updates for CF10.
    Using VM VirtualBox to setup a few virtual servers, I am looking to setup a load balancing of ColdFusion 10 on 2 remote instances. The goal would be have ColdFusion Cluster Manager be able to point http request to one of the two servers based on load/availability. Not really having a hardware cluster/failover setup, just managing resources on two CF instances instead of a standalone.
    The servers are Windows Server 2008 R2 with IIS7.5 and ColdFusion 10 Enterprise on installed on 3 of these machines. Let's call them CF-LBManager, CF-Web1, and CF-Web 2. In the CF Docs, they show the Cluster Manager adding the local CF instance and "if you want" a remote instance. However, this scenario would require the main instance to be running and not fail for it to direct to the other instance.
    I am trying to set this up now with CF-LBManager as just a manager of the requests coming in. In the Enterprise Manager >> Instance Manager, the local instance is shown and I add the two remote instances with the correct Remote Port, JVM Route, etc. I also made sure the <Cluster>...</Cluster> block was added to the two remote instances (CF-Web1 and CF-Web2) \runtime\conf\server.xml file too, Jetty Services also is running. Now under the Enterprise Manager >> Cluster Manager I add the two remote instances to the cluster, not the local instance on CF-LBManager with Multicast Port and Sticky Sessions enabled. On Submit, I get a green message "You must restart all the server instances and any configured webservers for these changes to take effect.". I go ahead and reboot the servers and come back.
    I now browse to the ColdFusion page as a test on CF-Web1 and CF-Web2 to make sure CF is running properly, they do. I then browse the IP of the CF-LBManager, however it only returns the local IIS web site and not redirect to one of the two cluster members. I am not seeing any message on the coldfusion-out.log on the remote instances. Am I not setting this up correctly or not enabling the Cluster Manager to take over and pass along the requests to those in the cluster?

    Unfortunatley I don't have a lot of experience with CF10 on Windows, but if you are running CF behind IIS I think  you will need to update the Tomcat connector configuraiton to do load balancing. I'm not sure if re-running the wsconfig tool on all of the servers will do this or not, but that is what I would suggest trying first. If that doesn't work you will need to update the Tomcat connector configuraiton manually. You can find more information on load balancing with the Tomcat connector here: http://tomcat.apache.org/connectors-doc/generic_howto/loadbalancers.html.

  • JDBC load balancing with non RAC replicated instances

    Hi,
    The thin JDBC load balancing feature only works with RAC clusters or it can be used with two non RAC replicated instances using the same service name?
    Thanks,
    Ezio.

    Thank you Douglas for your time.
    I assumed the first case (database connection load balancing). I thought that the listener would do the load balancing and failover trick. So, I configured the JDBC connection as follow:
    String MM_loadBalance1_DRIVER = "oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver";
    String MM_loadBalance1_USERNAME = "scott";
    String MM_loadBalance1_PASSWORD = "tiger";
    String MM_loadBalance1_STRING = "jdbc:oracle:thin:@(DESCRIPTION=" +
    " (LOAD_BALANCE=on) (FAILOVER=on)"+
    " (ADDRESS_LIST="+
    " (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=test1) (PORT=1521))"+
    " (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=test2)(PORT=1521)))"+
    " (CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=test)))";
    Driver DriverRecordset1 = (Driver)Class.forName(MM_loadBalance1_DRIVER).newInstance();
    Connection ConnRecordset1 = DriverManager.getConnection(MM_loadBalance1_STRING,MM_loadBalance1_USERNAME,MM_loadBalance1_PASSWORD);
    But, when one of the instances was down (test1), the connection failed, it didn't failed over to the other instance (test2).
    So I wondered if it failed due to some misconfiguration issue or because it only works with RAC instances...

  • Open the same raw file in PS5 with two different White Balance settings

    I'm trying to open the same Raw File in PS5 with two different White Balance settings.  One setting "as shot" the other in "daylight", then blend them.  The tutorial I'm watching says to "stack" the images.  The tutorial shows one White Balance setting as the "Background" layer and the other setting as "Layer 1".  I don't know how to do this and the tutorial is not specific.  Can anyone either point me to a step by step instruction or offer some assistance?

    Also look at the "Snapshots" feature of Camera Raw itself.  It allows you non-destructively to keep multiple sets of settings for a single raw file.
    Learning about it far exceeds the scope of what can be done in this particular forum.  I would recommend this book as essential reading:
