Balky airport internet connections

I'm new to Macs and have a two month old iMac G5 with built-in wireless connectivity. I have a cable modem connected to a DLink DI-624 wireless router. Ihave no problem with my ethernet connected Windows XP machine or with wireless connectivity with my Windows Toshiba laptop. The G5 shows good signal strength and diagnostics show a good internet connection. However, I have to refresh every attempted internet connection three or four times to get it to load a web page. And, I've been unable to dowload any software updates because the download freezes at differing points and times out. Any suggestions about what I should do? Also, what is Interference Robustness? It shows up in the Airport drop down menu, but I could not find anything on the machine (or the extremely skimpy documentation) that says what it is.

Hello Steve.
Have you checked the router manufacturer's website to see if a firmware update is available for your router model for improved OS X compatibility.
You may experience network performance problems if a microwave oven or other source of interference such as a cordless telephone is used frequently near your base station. To minimize interference, turn on interference robustness.

  • Lost Airport Internet Connection

My wireless network/internet connection is no longer working and Applecare is telling me they are not allowed to assist b/c of legal issues with internet providers, so I'm hoping someone here can help me?!
I use my iMac as a base station for my MacBook Pro to connect to the internet using the Airport and it is no longer working.
My iMac is connected to cable modem (Best Data CMX300V2) through Ethernet and the internet connection is working fine, however the triangle airport icon at the top right of my desktop is now gray with a box inside it. When I got into System Preferences>Network, the iMac Airport is ON, but now saying "AirPort has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the Internet".
When I go into System Preferences>Network, for the MacBook Pro Airport it says it's connected and lists an IP address, but I have no internet connection. The MacBook Pro also has that gray triangle airport icon with the box at the top right of my desktop. I used Airport Utility to try to find the base station, but it was unsuccessful.
    What is happening here?

Alright if your in desperado helpo then you will want to try and listen to this.
The MBP is built by ALUMINUM it's brushed and the metal screws have that problem with wireless. sometimes it will happen. I have both and that happends to me too. What I do is that your going to just have to go to the wireless sign and then click on Interfearence Robustness. If you do that. It should help more.
If you still have wireless issues try downloading APPLE CARE on your widgets. That always helps and that is where I usually go before I come to here for help.
    I hope my info works.

  • Airport internet connection problems in OS X but not in XP or iBook

I have an iBook and an iMac, and the iMac has Leopard and XP on it. When in Leopard, most of the time, the internet connection is extremely slow and can never load a full page in Safari, always quitting halfway or the connection drops completely.
When I go into XP, the internet connection is perfectly fine and there are no speed issues and the connection is never dropped.
When I use my iBook, there is also no connection problems.
The crappy internet connection also affects Mail in such a way that I cannot quit Mail or Shut Down (until I force quit Mail).
I called apple the last time this happened and their solution fixed it, but the problem is back again.
Does anyone know how to fix this, or does anyone know if there is something wrong with my Airport?
(Its an aluminum iMac, 2.4 GHz running 10.5.7, and not using the Beta Safari)

    Hello, I don't think I can help, I do have 10.7.3 & W7 Ultimate, but I run W7 in Parallels...

And it uses Shared Networking of OSX.

  • Airport / Internet Connection

All my friends said I would love my MacBook Pro but I feel like throwing it out the window. It won't connect in coffee shops etc and will only sometimes connect on our wireless network at home which is broadband - basically it is totally inconsistent connecting to the Internet. It will generally only connect to our home network and usually only if it is the first computer to connect to the wireless network after we restart our wireless modem router. However, sometimes even this doesn't work. Then I manually try to use Internet Connect to connect and that never works and asks for passwords when we don't have a password protected wireless network at home.....I am going nuts!!! Please advise.

I would recommend the AX be reset to its factory default condition, doing so while the modem is unplugged from the power. After the reset, connect your AX directly to your computer using an ethernet cable and configure the AX manually using the AirPort Admin Utility (not the AirPort Set-up Assistant). Name your base station, and give it an administrator password. Name your network and give it a password. Set your preferred security option. Set the AX up to Connect using Ethernet (if cable modem), or PPPoE (if dsl, also fill in any account information). Allow the AX to Distribute IP Addresses via DHCP. Apply the changes and disconnect the ethernet cable from your computer, plugging the cable directly into the modem ethernet jack. Power up the modem. You should be able to connect.
    A couple of more things:
Your modem output must be ethernet, not usb.
Your computer should be set up to receive its IP address via DHCP (System Preferences>Network). In the Network preference pane, make sure PPPoE is disabled.
These instructions assume you are not using PPPoA as your connection protocol.
Your modem is a pure modem and not a modem/router combination.
You do not have another router in your system.

  • Sharing Airport Internet connection Over Ethernet

    Hi
I've read various things about this on the forums here, but none of them seem to make a considerable amount of sense seeing as the person just magically works out the problem. So I'll attempt to describe my problem.
I'm trying to share my Intel iMac's Airport connection to another mac running 10.4.6 over ethernet. I'm using crossover cable, and so far I've got the two computers to recognise each other in Network tab of the Finder, so I can mount the other's HD on my desktop if i wanted. BUT, I am having no luck with sharing my internet connection, I have the 'Share my Airport connection over Ethernet' settings ticked in System Preferences on the iMac with airport, but the "light" on the network overview page is orange on both computers, and the one connected with ethernet does not connect to the internet.
Any idea what I may be doing wrong?
    Thanks a lot
    Mo

You are sharing one connection from the main unit to a secondary unit. The secondary unit only has access through the main unit, so the system doesn't see a personal web connection, just a web connection. In order to share that connection, it must be seen as a "personal" or directly connected form of network. This is so that somebody can't just steal your connection and then filter it to a billion computers and hack you and really mess up your system. If you want to share that connection, I suggest you invest in a wireless router. Then you can share all peripherals from the main unit and other units in any configuration you wish, and then use your secondary(wireless) unit to share directly to the third unit(crossover cable) without having to set a bunch of manual controls and troubleshoot. Printers, some scanners, and sometimes even dvd burners can be shared across a router. And because the system reads two connections(comp-to-comp and comp-to-web) through the router, you can actually fully network all peripherals to work across each unit, so long as they all run the same versions of OS and software. Just remember, you get what you pay for with routers. $100-$200 should get you something decent and a USB speed-booster card wouldn't hurt if you can get it as part of the whole router package. I've used the same type of configuration and it has saved me days, even weeks of trying to move data onto cds and dvds to move between computers for using with different programs and tasks.
    good luck

  • Describe WORKING mbp c2d airport internet connection with stable signal

As I read many reports about problems in different configurations and after 2 weeks was not able to find a working solution for myself yet, may I ask users who do have a working and stable airport internet configuration to describe it in this thread? Only WORKING configurations please.
    MBP C2D 2.33 GHz, PB G4 1.25 GHz titanium; AEBS(5.7), AE(6.3), WPA2-personal   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   dell m70 pentium M, dell C2D, windows xp pro

I replaced my 4 years old airport extreme base station (AEBS, newest firmware v5.7) with the netgear WPN824 router and my mbp c2d wireless internet access problems are resolved. 802.11g only, WPA2-PSK. I see a steady strong signal on my mbp c2d (11-15 bars) and download speeds in the range 10-15Mbit/s. Also my older pb G4 and dell c2d have a quick steady wireless connection to the WPN824.
With AEBS my mbp c2d signal varied between 0-15 bars (occasionally dropped connection) and the download speeds on the mbp c2d were in the range 3-14 Mbit/s, but on average 50% slower than with the WPN824.

  • Lost Airport internet connection between G5 and G3 iMacs

I hope you don't mind, I posted the following in internet etc. but not much traffic there...
I'm doing this from memory as not in front of either iMac. I have until now had a simple wireless internet connection as follows: G5 iMac connected by ethernet to broadband supplier which shares internet connection via Airport. This is picked up by an ethernet wireless router connected to my G3.
This has stopped working over the weekend. G3 had an amber light in network status (static DHCP address or similar) but that has now gone to green and 'connected to the internet' etc.
The internet sharing control on the G5 has full signal strength but seems to have difficulty checking status - revolving petal thingy below signal strength. But occasionally does settle on 'status fine' or similar.
Now the G3 fails to connect to the internet, G5 works just fine.
No settings have been knowlingly changed and all seem to be correct. There was a power failure for a couple of hours last week, don't know if this is related.
Thank you very much for your help.

Darrin, just back from Montreal and glad to see that great minds think alike. Often, in fact usually, problems with airport connections can be solved by rebooting the router/airport. For no apparent reason, they often go all funny, and this usually takes care of the problem,
anyway, glad you are back up and running,
    Miriam

  • How to share an airport internet connection with XP thru a crossover cable

Any help appreciated - My iMac is connected to the internet and home network through airport. I would like to connect an XP machine to the iMac through ethernet with a crossover cable. I'd then like to be able to share the iMac's internet and network connection with the XP and file share between computers.
How should I configure the machines? I can get them to share files (with a manual IP address) but even though "Internet Sharing" is clicked on the iMac the XP does not connect to the internet.
    iMac is running 10.5.6
    thanks for any help!

Yes, I do have "internet sharing" turned on. It is set to share the connection from Airport to computers using Ethernet. But there is no internet on the PC. Should they both be set for DHCP? (they are)

  • AirPort - Internet Connect

My daughters new MacBook will connect to the home wired network. But not the Westell DSL wireless router in the house. all the other ibooks and including an errant Dell laptop do. They all seek and find the internet with no problem. It finds the router via network assistant, says airport is on but not connected to the internet. After some trouble I can find the menu which asks for a password, I know it and it won't accept it. regardless of security level. It finds the router by it's ID number. I've tgried until the cows came home. I dead set on finding a solution myself. But I'm n ot above asking for direction.

gete, Welcome to the discussion area!
Go to the AirPort menu (on the right side of the menu
bar) and select you network name. That should connect
    you to your wireless network.
    Hello again Duane
this problem was solved by my killing the machine - you may remember the other question you helped me with. SoI'll close this one out too.
Duane, in which of the discussion groups should I ask some basic questions, things one doesn't find in a handbook...
    best wishes, George

  • Switching from Ethernet Internet Connection to Airport Internet Connection

When I try to switch from an Ethernet connection at work to an Airport connection at home or visa versa, 9 out of 10 times it locks up my computer and I have to restart. I did not have this problem before I upgraded to Leopard.
    Any suggestions?
    Lauren

    Hi,
in the design center select the database modul, right mouse click, select configure and set the location to your new location.
You could change the original location if you first unregister it in the control center. Then it es editable - it's the better way to make changes on the connection entries.

  • Safari / Airport Internet Connection Issue

New to the mac from PC and have installed airport card in my G5. The card sees the network and connects but safari won't load. I have reinstalled software again no luck, just keep getting error message can;t find server and I'm stuck what do to being new to macs. Any help please would be great. Thanks.

    Hello Neil1687,
Welcome to Apple discussions and to Mac; )
Under the Blue Apple > System preferences > Software Update >* Installed
updates, do you have the 2 updates listed below ?
    2006-05-29 11:31:17 -0400: Installed "AirPort Software" (4.2)
    2006-05-29 11:37:21 -0400: Installed "AirPort Extreme Driver Update 2005-001" (1.0)
Do you know about Running Disk permissions repair ? That is a must before updating any apple software. Look at this article Travis A.'s Regular Maintenance/General Troubleshooting .Focus on letter " a)"
You may have to update Airports software if you do not have aforementioned software updates installed.
    * However Software installed via Downloads on Apple will not show In Installed Software.
Those will show in HD>Library > Receipts Folder [ go to list mode] see what you have for Aiport.pkg [s] * Do Not move any files from the folder.
Since you have the card installed there may be more then i show above, i do not have a card installed yet on my 'puter 10.3.9.
Under The Blue Apple again run your "Software Update.." to see what, if anything is there for you, however you should run disk repair before & after
the update, make sure all other applications are "Quit".
Update only the airport for now ignore other updates.
This will show us also if you can connect to the web.
This forum maybe helpful to you Getting Online
Please let us know, i hope I have not confused you.
    Any questions please post them.

  • Sharing MacBook Pro's Airport internet connection with PS3 through Ethernet

    Can this happen?
Tried several times and the connection seems to fail every time.
    Any ideas?

In OSX I haven't got my iPod touch to do diddly squat, but it does work in Bootcamp XP, although in an odd way. If no activity in about 10 seconds the next time you enter a web address or something into the iPod Touch it seems to take awhile to re-enable the connection, but other than that it works rather dependably.
    My setup:
Macbook Pro 2.4 Ghz used with Sprint EX720 Expresscard used in Bootcamp with Windows XP. Now I bought my God Daughter a touch iPod the same day I bought mine and it appeared that hers worked in OSX. I will get with her hopefully this evening to confirm this. If it is true I may try exchanging mine, since both were bought only a few days ago.
I spend more of my leisure time in XP anyway, just wish it wouldn't - oh wait, here's another thing; if my Powerbook is sharing the wireless connection from my Macbook Pro, which is in Windows, there is absolutely no pausing and the iPod Touch works like a charm. So evidently it is the iPod which is breaking the connection when no other device is using it; I notice it searches for new connections every 10 seconds (if you watch that little spinning ball icon which appears every ten in Settings/WiFi networks in the iPod display. Maybe someone has some clues as to what's going on there. Is there a way to set up a ping or something OR stop it from searching for new connections to keep the MBP connection active?

  • Trying to share internet connection using Airport Express

I have an internet connection via a Verizon Wireless broadband card in the Express Card slot in my MacBookPro. I share this connection to my iMac via Airport and I have an Airport Express card connected to a printer & stereo. However, when I establish the Airport internet connection (internet sharing in System prefrences) it establishes a wireless network in the MacBook (I think) as evedinced by the Airport signal (fan) logo changing to a vertical arrow. This precludes connecting to the Airport Express (the Airport Express network is not shown in the Airport pull down menu, only the MacBook network). My question is: can I somehow share the internet connection using the Airport Express network???

ejagnut, Welcome to the discussion area!
Configure the AirPort Express (AX) to join the wireless network created by your MacBook Pro. The directions can be found in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.

  • Internet connection failing dozens of times daily for weeks now

My computer's connection to the Airport Express base station has no problems at all. But the internet connection goes out literally dozens of times a day (at no predictable schedule); this has been happening for almost a month. I originally thought the problem was with the internet provider, but I'm now beginning to think that either my settings are wrong, or that I have a corrupt file somewhere. Here are the details:
I connect via a cable modem (Time Warner - Road Runner). I know people have had problems with Time Warner, so I assumed that was the issue; however I've had 3 service calls and they've checked signal strength inside and out, and swapped out the modem and the cables. I don't think it is simply problems in our geographic area (i.e. greater Los Angeles) due to the fact that the Internet fails sometimes 40-50 times daily, and the problem began when I upgraded from an old Airport base station to a brand new Airport Express about a month ago.
The airport/internet connection is shared 3 ways: two MacBook Pro computers and one iPhone. My Airport's internet settings are as follows:
    Configure IPv4 using DHCP.
DNS Servers: 66.75.160.63 and 66.75.160.64 (note I have already tried swapping these for OpenDNS -- this did NOT solve the problem)
    Domain name: socal.rr.com
    DHCP Client ID: [blank]
    Ethernet WAN port: Default-Automatic
Connection Sharing: Share a Public IP address
    DHCP Beginning Address: 10.0.1.2
    Ending Address: 10.0.1.200
    DHCP Lease: 4 hours
    NAT settings are all unchecked
One of the main reasons I believe that the problem is with my computer's settings or a corrupt file is that I can fix the problem whenever the Internet "goes down" almost 100% of the time by doing the following: after loading Airport Utility, I make ANY trivial change (i.e. changing the DHCP lease from 4 hours to 5 hours) and then click UPDATE to refresh the Airport base station. This fixes the problem almost 100% of the time. But then, anywhere from 10 minutes to 3 hours later, the Internet connection goes down again. [Unplugging the power from the modem, waiting 30 seconds, and plugging it back in ALSO fixes the problem almost 100% of the time, until it goes out again a little while later.]
I can't think of what else to try -- but any advice would be greatly appreciated -- it's impossible for us to work with the Internet constantly going out throughout the day, every day.
    Thank you!

I had a similar issue with a local fiber provider in Loma Linda, CA. Internet connection with a new Airport Extreme was fast but with drops at regular intervals every day. Resetting the airport fixed the problem but there was one difference, even a direct connection through ethernet cord to the gateway also failed at regular intervals.
After trying everything, the problem was fixed by asking the fiber service provider to switch the port the wire from my home was connected to at a central box somewhere in my neighborhood.
    Good Luck!

  • Internet connection dropping out throughout day; problem NOT with provider

Also, I have tried disconnecting Airport and connecting directly to the cable modem via Ethernet. The problem remains exactly the same -- I can connect, but then the connection fails soon after. Unplugging then replugging the modem fixes the problem temporarily. So I do not think the problem is a defective Airport base station, nor do I think it is the modem (which has been replaced), nor Time Warner.
I can't think of what else to try -- but any advice would be greatly appreciated -- it's impossible for us to work with the Internet constantly going out throughout the day, every day.
    Thank you!
