Banding issues with Gradient

I'm having some troubles with the gradient tool in Illustrator and I hope someone can help. No matter what I do I can't get a smooth color blend there are always strips or rings. As you can see I have two colors in my gradient and the gradient slider is in the middle but I keep getting a lot of the first color with a quick transistion into the second color. This happens no matter what colors I use I just picked these two because they're easier to see the lines in. The same thing shows up when I print so it's not my moniter. My blend options are set on smooth color. It happens no matter where my gradient annotator is. I've never had this trouble before and I don't know what else to try!!  Any suggestions would be appreciated!

More things to check: using Illustrator in CMYK make sure to check assigning the "Photoshop 5 Default CMYK " profile and this will make the gradient appear without the banding you are talking about, because that color space has a gamma curve similar in smoothness (although not the same) as the gamma of the sRGB color space. Also check this, in a RGB document create a gradient from white R0 G0 B0 to black R255 G255 B255. Then to compare, copy the object, create a new CMYK file, and paste, the gradient now is with rich black and no banding because of that but it doesn't appear exactly the same as in the RGB because of the different gamma.
Actually you wouldn't want to do either.
Actually I recommended to check these things for the purpose of understanding the problem not as solutions. I can't recommend a particular color space without knowing what the destination device is.
The point of the example with the "Photoshop 5 Default CMYK " is that the problem is not the CMYK color spaces in general but the fact that Illustrator always makes a gradient assuming it is used in a color space having the same gamma curve as the sRGB color space. The OP used a color space with a very different gamma curve than sRGB. However, the gradient in Photoshop 5 Default CMYK and sRGB looks similarly uniform because both color spaces have similar gamma curves.
The point of the second example with converting RGB to CMYK is that although having rich black does help avoiding uneven gradient distribution, it doesn't automatically solves the problem with matching the sRGB gradient the way it looks in the sRGB color space and that's what the OP asked for.
The acctual solution for matching the gradint in sRGB color space in my post was this:

No, it doesn't turn the color management off on or under the surface and you have as much control as using any other color spaces. But, I have no idea what this profile represents, I just gave it as an example after trying different available profiles and saw that this one gives uniform gradient similar to sRGB.
We can say the color management is off only when there is no conversion between source and destination because both are the same color space. This means creating CMYK documents referring to the monitor will always require color management conversion from the CMYK color space of the document to the RGB color space of the monitor, so you can't turn off color management for CMYK documents. You can do that for RGB documents by displaying them in the monitor's color space in which case the color space of the image equals the color space of the monitor (no conversion). And this actually is always the case with non - color managed programs but an option in those that are fully color managed.
Monika Gause wrote:...
Pasting an RGB-artwork that contains the color black into a CMYK-document will convert the black to a very rich black of little under 400% ink coverage. Again you would not want to do this.
Pasting or converting from RGB mode the color R0 G0 B0 to CMYK mode will convert to CMYK values representing the optimal ink coverage rich black for the destination device as specified in the color profile of the document. That's why when you do this to documents with different CMYK color profiles you get different CMYK values.

  • Banding Issues with GeForce 8800

    Hi,
I just installed CS4 Production Premium on a new Mac Pro. The system specs are:
    2x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    10GB RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
    2x 1TB SAS drives
    Samsung 30" Syncmaster 305T Plus
OSX 10.5.6 (both OSX and CS4 are up to date)
When I was working in After Effects, I noticed some dramatic banding issues when lighting a scene. I was curious, so I created a gradient and the same banding was visible. I tried creating a gradient in PS, AI and Flash: same results. Consistent across all CS4 products, and the image depth (8bit, 16bit or 32bit) doesn't affect it at all. Applying a blur effect to any image also produces banding.
I tried finding some gradients through Google image search. They look fine in Firefox, but when I open them in Photoshop the banding once again pops up. Same in Preview to some extent, but not as drastic.
Two other guys in my office are running CS4 with the same monitor. We're running identically calibrated color profiles, and working in the same color space. They have no problems. The only difference between their setup and mine is that they're using Macbook Pros.
Things I have tried: turning OpenGL on/off and toggling the individual GPU settings, working in all available color spaces, working with variable DPI, using another monitor, changing the synchronized color space through Bridge, changing the conversion options (dither, engine, etc), changing the color management policies, working in CMYK/RGB/Gray/Lab, changing the pixel aspect ratio, altering the scratch disks and memory allocation, dumping my CS4 preferences and starting over... none of this affects the banding. A 16bit 72DPI image that's a straight black to white gradient consists of nothing more than 12 or so very visible steps. I'm starting to wonder if this is a graphics card issue.
All the work I'm doing is for screen, so printers don't factor into the equation. I'd appreciate any tips or suggestions anyone can offer.

Well, one thing I notice is that attempting to open the linked .png in Photoshop, it has an embedded "SyncMaster" profile.
Opening it in Photoshop CS4, maintaining that profile, I see banding (although very subtle in the second (bottom) example). The top example exhibits a stippled effect at the band edges at 100% scale.
Opening it and converting it to Adobe RGB 1998, I see almost no sign of banding in that bottom example.
Opening it as is in Preview, I see the banding again.
Creating a new radial gradient in Photoshop CS4, 1300 pixels wide, #666666 to #000000, at 100% scale, it is a smooth transition with the barest hint of banding. Also, my #666666 is noticeably lighter than in your example.
Offhand, I'm not sure which factors affect your workflow. But I doubt it is your video card unless it is set for, say 16 bit or 8 bit...

  • Sudden banding issue with Mac and new Canon printer, already called tech

    Good morning fellow Elementites.
I have been using Photoshop Elements 12 on my MacBook Pro 13 inch, running Maverick OS, printing to HP Photosmart Premium all-in one with no banding issues, ever.
I did want to upgrade my printer and monitor so I purchased the Canon Pixma Pro 100 and a new external LG IPS monitor to view the PSE program.
I also purchased ColorMunki Display to calibrate the monitor. Everything is operational with the recommended settings for color etc.
I printed a .tiff image and a .jpg through the PSE print function. The images that looked perfect on the new monitor and Macbook monitor printed with banding. I called Canon tech support. The man had me perform a few tasks to make sure the printer was operating correctly. We printed test sheets from the printer and they were all as they should be.
He the said he NEVER prints from PSE. He edits in PSE but prints using Canon's EZ share or print or whatever it's called, doesn't matter cause I do NOT LIKE IT AT ALL. Not to mention it is just another step in the work flow. Not to mention that I paid good money for a photo editing program of high quality and I want to use ALL the features.
He said the problem isn't the printer but the printing software instructions TO the printer via the Mac OS printer system, or something like this is what he said. He also had me download some other updates and driver files. He then had me remove the printer from my printer list and then add it back.
He then had me print the .jpg image, (it only prints .jpg which is annoying as heck,) and it came out SO BEAUTIFUL I ALMOST CRIED
I want to print this quality THROUGH PSE. Does anyone have a clue as to what to do to resolve the issue?  None of the suggestions in other threads from the past seem appropriate enough.
    Eager to hear,
    Regards.

I have returned home and have copied down all the settings so that I may post them here before I do any more fiddling.  Maybe something glaring will be spotted before I start changing things.
I opened an image in PSE 12.
I chose from the PSE menu at the top of the monitor, FILE >PRINT
A window appears with my photo and boxes and such: 1. Select Printer> CANON PRO 100-SERIES (The other printer isn't concern now).
Select Paper Size and Orientation, no problems with this or any of the other settings in this window.
I then select MORE OPTIONS button at bottom of window.
    Another window opens.
There are 3 options listed on the left hand side PRINTING CHOICES which it is automatically on, CUSTOM PRINT SIZE which I haven't needed yet, and COLOR MANAGEMENT.
    I select COLOR MANAGEMENT.
COLOR HANDLING is set to PRINTER MANAGES COLOR.
IMAGE SPACE is listed, not in any box, as sRGB IEC61966-2.1
PRINTER PROFILE is listed in a box that is grayed out and not selectable, as CANON IJ COLOR PRINTE...
RENDERING INTENT is set in a selectable box as RELATIVE COLORMETRIC.
(There is a little mssg below all this that reminds me to remember to enable color management in the printer preferences dialog.  I was never able to find this action and after doing some research I read that this mssg is a boo boo as the function is automatic in MAC running Maverick, supposedly).
I then click OK and the box goes away.
I then click the PAGE SET UP button.
    A window titled PRINT opens.
The Printer selection box says CANON PRO=100 series.
The next box always confuses me because nothing in the list appears to pertain to me when I want to print my photos.  It is the Presets box.
I believe FAST PRINTING ON PLAIN PAPER is always showing when I open this window.  But I don't want that so I always look to see if there is something I should choose that applies.  I don't know what they mean by DEFAULT SETTINGS in this case.  LAST USED SETTINGS would be ok if that was what I wanted each time I printed.  FAST and FINE on Plain Paper?  I have been assuming they mean plain copy paper so I don't choose that.  SAVE CURRENT SETTINGS AS PRESET, I don't choose that because I haven't been sure of the settings.  And the SHOW PRESETS does me no good becuase you can't change anything in there.
PAPER SIZE, not an issue at the moment.
LAYOUT button is my next stop, by now I am exhausted
I look at COLOR MATCHING which shows CANON COLOR MATCHING as the selected method.  (The other choice is COLOR SYNC but I don't know anything about that one and haven't been told to change it.)
PAPER HANDLING & COVER PAGE, N/A at this time.
QUALITY & MEDIUM.  I choose my paper type, paper source, print quality which for my photos I select HIGH.  I don't touch COLOR OPTIONS because that is scary looking.  And BORDER and MARGIN I have no issue with.
I then hit SAVE and the window closes.
Then I select PRINT in the lower right of the window that has my photo in it and from which I acessed all these other things.
Phew.  So, can anyone tell me if they see anything wrong here, PLEASE.
    Regards,
    P.

  • Banding issue with brand new MG7550 in Win 8.1

    Hi there,
I'm running some test prints on a new Pixma MG7550, but I'm getting a consistent vertical banding on landscape photo prints (i.e. horizontal bands on portrait prints).  It's really noticable on gradients, but is there regardless of colour.  It looks like a slightly darker line every 8mm or so.
    Here are the details:
    Pixma MG7550 (Firmware 2.020)
Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit (Auto update enabled and up to date)
Printer installed on network via ethernet (no other connection)
    Canon inkjet printer driver 2.80
    Stock (included) cartridges installed
    Printing from Windows photo viewer
A4 HP glossy photo paper (landscape mode)
For what it's worth, I was very careful in the setup process and followed all the instructions to the letter.
The print tests look fine, no missing content or obvious errors.  The printed image looks just like the reference one.
I've run nozzle checks, head alignments and the clean utility.
I haven't run a deep clean as I understand that this is only necessary when you are sure it is a cleaning problem and I really don't know.
I've updated the printer firmware, but the problem is exactly the same, before and after.
I suspect it may be a Windows 8.1 issue, but only because the Canon site refers to a similar-sounding problem in Windows Vista (where it suggests upgrading to Service Pack 2).
If anyone can offer any ideas, I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Glad it worked out.
I have a Pixma Pro-100 with XPS driver, so my experience is based on that, but I believe they all work the same. As far as the XPS driver is concerned, when you install the XPS driver the computer sees two printers - an MG7550 and an MG7550XPS. If you don't make the XPS printer your default printer in Windows, or specifically choose the XPS printer from the Print menu of your application, then the XPS driver isn't being used.
There is also a lot of Internet discussion over whether or not Windows has a 16-bit printing process.
I have experimented with both. 1. I have not seen a photo printing quality difference visually with XPS over non-XPS. 2. Using the XPS driver hasn't created any negatives that I have seen.  So, I use the XPS version just in case there are some subtle benefits I don't see.
But, if you want XPS then you need to be sure to select it.
The print head sticking option moves the head further from the paper; usually selected for heavier weight paper. I don't know anything about the HP paper you are using, and don't know if there a re negatives with selecting it for lighter weight paper, but since you made two changes I would suggest you uncheck that option and print from PS just to see if there is a difference.

  • INDS CS6 - PDF Export at High Quality issues with Gradients.

    Hi all,
We're noticing that on our PDF exports from our INDS instances we're seeing that gradients are showing up when the PDF is printed. You can visibly see the gradient lines. We have our INDS set for 'High Quality Print' and upon viewing the PDF in your browser it looks fine but when you print the PDF you can see the gradient lines.
We've exported the same IDML's directly from InDesign to PDF to Print and the gradients do not show up.
Is there a ExportPDF option we are missing on the InDesign Server that I need to tweak to make these gradients smooth and disappear?

    Marvin,
The TIF file in this example consists of a repeating sequence of adjacent columns in the following configuration: 8 white pixel, 7 black pixels.
This pattern repeats across the width of the file.
I've attached one of these files below. Please try to view it at 4000% when placed in InDesign.
(Please note that this problem also occurs with photographic images as well).
If I then crop the attached file in Photoshop, re-save and place in InDesign it will preview correctly at 4000%.
If I leave it at its original dimensions, but convert to a Gray TIF, it will preview correctly -for a while, but eventually also become "corrupted". As I mentioned in my initial post, I've had to use a Grey TIF to get the placement correct, then replace with the CMYK TIF version. Saving with and without LZW compression makes no difference. The fact that the Grey version works temporarily has got me confused. As it happens, for the moment anyway, a narrow width file in CMYK is previewing okay, but then in the past I've used TIFs just ~100 mm wide and had the same problem.

  • Color Banding issue with FCP and Color...PLEASE HELP!!

Ok so heres whats going on and i'm hoping some can help me out here cause i'm totally lost!
So we have a film shot on HDV. The scenes are mostly dark and well lit. Everything in the FCP timeline looks great (little noisy but great). We brought it over the color and did our color grading and corrections. Once we returned back to FCP, we started seeing some major color banding. We then applied the neatvideo plug-in with helps with noise but it made it far worse.
We are rendering in 10bit but how can we remove this banding!!
    Thanks again for the help!

Yeah, you can't critically judge video quality on computer displays. They won't show you an accurate image. Unfortunately, there is no way to send a signal to a video display (HDTV, broadcast monitor) for this purpose from an imac.

  • Gradient banding issues in CS3

CS3 has a gradient banding problem that no-one seems to be openly acknowledging or addressing.
If i make a graduated background in either Illustrator or Photoshop there is obvious banding in the gradient fill.
I have researched the problem on the net and it seems that many people are experiencing this problem but that there is no known solution or patch form Adobe to fix this. Only useless suggestions about work arounds for this simple exercise. Interestingly several people report never experiencing this problem until they upgraded from CS to CS3. I also fit this category.
I run a mixed Mac/PC network and CS3 produces fairly large background gradients perfectly in PS on my PC, though not in Il. My macs fail to produce gradients of any useful size without significant banding in both PS and Il.
I know that many other people have this issue - when is Adode going to publish something useful to address it?

    John,
Where do you get the idea that Document Raster Effects settings should match a "document resolution" of 5080 or 2540?
    > "300" is way too low ( if you are referring to document resolution, not image resolution )
    Document Raster Effects
is a raster image resolution setting: it's the resolution of the raster images that are created by Illustrator's raster effect features. Specifying a raster resolution that is 1:1 with an imagesetter's dpi is ridiculous.
Further, where exactly is it that you "usually" set a "document resolution" in Illustrator CS3? The document resolution setting in earlier versions was simply the flatness setting, and defaulted to "800 dpi" (which is a flatness of 3, assuming a 2400 dpi imaging device). That setting is no longer even present in Illustrator, since (as I recall) AI 10. Flatness had nothing to do with grad fills; it affects curve accuracy.
You guys are talking about a problem with banding--the OP implying that he has been investigating the problem for some time--responders even offering suggestions to "fix" it. Yet no one in this thread has yet stated any of the
specifics that are necessary to even talk about banding:
    Where
is the problematic banding occurring? Paddy Rogers does not even say whether he is talking about banding
    on screen or in
    output.
Assuming the banding is in printed output, what kind of device is it? If it's an imagesetter, is it using PostScript level 3?
What are the CMYK color values between stops of the of the page-size grad fill?
What is the size of the page (distance the grad spans)?
What is the halftone ruling being used?
    These suggested "fixes" are myths:
    Rasterizing the artwork
This is nonsense. It doesn't matter if the color values across a uniform grad are from vector commands or actual colors of pixel bands. Raster grads yield banded results just as easily as vector grads do. Banding is a function of the dot size and halftone ruling of a printing device. Rasterizing doesn't magically increase the resolution of a printing device.
Setting Raster Effects Resolution to a higher value
This has nothing to do with grad fills in Illustrator. A grad fill is not a raster effect.
    Transparency Flattener Settings
Again, has nothing to do with banding in grad fills. A low setting may result in pixelation, not banding.
    Antialiasing
Has nothing to do with banding in graduated fills.
Paddy, you claim that you are experiencing increased banding in both Photoshop CS3 and Illustrator CS3, as compared to the CS versions of those apps. Have you actually compared the
same files being sent to the
same printing device? If so, provide the specifics of a page-size grad that reliably produces the problematic banding. Be sure to state exactly what device you are printing to.

Hi. I am having an issue with music on my IPod. It would probably be easier to explain my specific issue: I have songs by Band of Horses from Cease to Begin. When viewing my albums through cover flow, it shows Cease To Begin as two separate albums, one with only Islands on the Coast, and the other having Islands on the Coast with 3 other songs. If I delete the album with only one song from my IPod, it deletes the song from the other "album" as well. If I go to "All Songs" by Band of Horses, it only shows one Islands on the Coast, so it is not a duplicate issue. Also, in Itunes, it only shows one album. I just recently updated to iOS5 on my 4th Gen IPod Touch, if that helps.

Hello APVzW, we absolutely want the best path to resolution. My apologies for multiple attempts of replacing the device. We'd like to verify the order information and see if we can locate the tracking number. Please send a direct message with the order number so we can dive deeper. • Logic issue with MS Band Sleep Tracking

If I do a both ends of the candle night, so hit the sack at 2am on the 10th of the month, then try to make amends that night by turning in at 10pm then the Band tracker records this as no sleep at all on the 9th, but 2 sleeps on the 10th. Well that just
nonsense. The logic isn't hard and I can guarantee the dev team understand. So this is BUG and it would be rather nice to see it fixed before Azure ML gets confused about my sleep patterns and predicts my early demise.

I have had the exact same problems, only I have not cycled so I can't relate to that complaint.  I have had an issue with my units of Distance now displaying incorrectly.  Prior to last week, my units were in Miles, and now they are in Kilometers.  I don't see anywhere to change that in the Settings.
Also, I contacted Joe in Support yesterday, and he had me reset my SmartBand and my phone (equivalent of rebooting) to see if that fixed anything.  It did not.  Then he instructed me to uninstall the Sony Apps on my phone, and re-install them.  I did that, and it worked temporarily.  All my historical data was now displaying correctly, until this morning when I woke up, and my sleep is back to being > 100 hours for last night, but my historical data still seems to be fine.  The problem seems to be during the initial capture of the data.  When I am on my timeline and I move the time forward, at midnight, the increments increase exponentially, rather than normal speed.  Prior to midnight, all is fine.
I have a Nike+ Fuel Band and got the Sony SWR10 primarily for Sleep Monitoring.  Now I am unable to do anything with the data because it is not accurate.  Also, I'm an avid runner and would appreciate the ability to change from KM back to Miles...this is a basic necessity.
    Thanks,

  • Issue with new dual band APE

I am having an issue keeping a good connection on the 5ghz channel with my new dual band airport extreme. Let me explain my current network. I just purchased a new APE. Airport utility shows it as AirPort Extreme Dual Band II with 7.5.1 firmware. I have it running a 2.4ghz G network and a 5ghz N network. In the basement I have my older APE which is a Airport Extreme N with gigabit ethernet (7.4.2 firmware). It is set to join 5ghz network from the dual band and then acts as a hub to my gaming Windows PC, ps3, and xbox. The 5ghz network is very spotty, it will work fine and I can browse away for about a minute and then it will just stop. My laptop and ipad will still show full signal strength, safari will just end up timing out while waiting. If I move them over to the 2.4ghz G network everything works fine, except of course file transfers which are slow because of being on the G network. Also should the older router be on a higher version number of firmware? I have tried checking for updates on both.

    +Something seems off.+
    Absolutely.
At 2.4 GHz, the high noise level indicates that you are experiencing interference from another wireless network (do you see other networks in iStumbler?), cordless phones (could be yours or your neighbors', a nearby wireless security system, microwave interference...lots of possibilities.
iStumber may not display "hidden" networks. Most modern routers (Apple included) allow users to "hide" their network, so it's possible that you may be experiencing interference from a wireless network that you cannot "see".
If you have cordless phones, you might want to pick a time when you can power them and their base stations completely down for a few hours to see if the wireless signal improves and noise drops on your network. Not much you can do about a neighbor's cordless phone or security system.
Experiment with different channel settings on your 2.4 GHz wireless as well.
Most cordless phone will not interfere with 5 GHz. I can't explain why your 5 GHz signal is so low..and the noise high..if you are close to the router and have line of sight between devices. Try a few different channel settings on 5 GHz as well.
Let us know what you find.

  • Issues with rendering shadows and gradients in Android folios

Does anyone have experience or solutions as to how to fix a problem with gradient feathers, transparency and drop shadows in Android renditions/folios?
In the iPad rendition (1024x768), there are several scrollable frames, multi-state objects etc. with transparencies and gradients. When this is viewed on Android devices, whether the iPad rendition or Android specific renditions, it renders the transparencies, gradients and drop shadows as a white tone and isn't rich in any way.
Is this a known problem or is there a way around this?

    Hi Dave,
    Here's the screenshots for you.
    iOS
    Nexus 7
    Samsung Galaxy Tab
On this one in particular, it's the gradient feather on the bottom (they are scrollable frames), and the 'i' and 'contents' buttons in the top right.

  • Banding issues

    I bought a MacBook Pro 17" a week ago.
I thought this computer was aimed at professionals who require CPU power and precision in what is displaied.
On my MacBook Pro display I have terrible banding issues. I bought this computer to do my work on, but now it seems I'll have to turn it in and buy a PC that will show me exactly what I need to be seeing.
Have any other seen this? (or is this what people refer to as the grain problem?)

This thread still hasn't really established what this banding looks like or when & where it's visible, (unlike the 'Gradients' thread where a graphic was posted with marks indicating where the banding occurs).
LCDtest sets all display pixels to white, red, green, blue & black & is intended AFAIK to help locate stuck pixels. If you see banding while running this, I'd suggest you have a serious hardware issue & should contact Apple for a remedy. Even if you did something such as choosing a printer profile as your monitor profile, it shouldn't cause banding on a display of a single RGB value.
Very uneven screen illumination could be referred to as 'banding' while running LCDtest, though I'd argue that it wasn't banding as much as a continuous tone gradient (which of course shouldn't be there).
These screens are one step closer than any others
were previously to the Cinema displays, especially
    when calibrated with hardware devices.
They are certainly closer in terms of brightness. The screen I have is not as close as any G4 PowerBook I've worked with in terms of viewing angles & evenness of illumination. I hope it's just my screen as I really need a powerful laptop for my work, hopefully I'll get my replacement in January. Until then I remain concerned that Apple have sacrificed viewing angles & even lighting for the sake of brightness...

  • Issue with Gaussian Blur and Spot Colors

Wondering if anyone has a solution to this issue.
Setup: We are using CS4 + CS5 Illustrator on Mac OS 10.5.X and 10.6.X
We created a spot color radial gradient filled circle over a background of the same spot color. The gradient went from 100% of the color down to 2%. We then applied a gaussian blur set to 50 pixels so that we had a nice smooth transition from the circle blurring outwards over the background with the blur blending into the spot color background.
The problem arises when we select "Retain Spot Colors" on the blur. It fills the gradient circle with 100% solid color (but at the 2% range of the gradient so it appears white) and deletes the blur effect. If we don't select "Retain Spot Colors", it converts the blur to process and we get a banding on our printouts where the spot background and CMYK gaussian meet.
We tried the gaussian blur set at 5 pixels all the way up to 55 in 10 pixel increments but nothing worked. We tried different spot colors, same issue. We know we can do the background in Photoshop and import it into Illustrator as a workaround, but we are constantly editing and changing files and would like to keep everything in Illustrator.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to solve this or if there is even a solution. We have not tried Illustrator 5.5 and do not want to invest the money in the upgrade yet. We would prefer to stay with both CS4 and CS5.
    Thank you for any input.

    Hi Mike,
Okay, I have some new information that changes things. I misunderstood what the issue was from the designer. My apologies in advance for the confusion. There are actually two issues but they are somewhat related.
    Issue 1:
We are concerned with banding on the outside of a spot color gradient with a gaussian blur over a patterned background of the same spot color.  We do not  know if this is becasue of the number of pixels on the blur, the version of Illustrator, the blending of the blur into the patterned background, etc... While the banding looks slight on screen it is more pronounced when printed. There are many variables and we have tried everything we can think of to create a smooth transition but we keep getting some banding.
The first image shows what happens when the Preserve Spot Colors in the Raster Effects Settings (found under the Effect menu) is unchecked. We believe that the spot color is being treated as CMYK and causing the blur to be a slightly different color than the spot color background thus causing the banding.
The second image shows what happens when we select Preserve Spot Colors. We lose the blur.
The third image is what we are trying to achieve over a over a patterned background of the same spot color. This was achieved with the Preserve Spot Colors unchecked and also unchecking Overprint Preview in the Separations Preview Palette. However, this brings us right back to the issue with the Preserve Spot Color being unchecked.
    Issue 2:
The issue is that we want to print a spot color gradient with a gaussian blur (over 50 pixels). In order to preview the blur effect correctly we have to uncheck the Preserve Spot Colors in the Raster Effects Settings (found under the Effect menu). However, we have recently found out that this will not work with the software our printers use to do separations. If we check the Preserve Spot Color for the separator, it turns the blur into a large square of color (see screensnap below). We have played around with the Add: x Around Object setting in Raster Effects but it has not helped.
    3. If we do not select "Preserve Spot Color", the blur looks correct but it is no longer a spot color but CMYK when separated.
I hope that isn't too confusing and makes sense. Again, apologies for the mixup on my part originally. Thanks again for any help.

  • Banding issues on 6300

    Hi,
are there any known issues with the display of the Nokia 6300, especially concerning colour gradients and "banding" effect?
On my 6300 which I received a few days ago (production date 08/2007, FW 4.71), gradients do not appear to be as smooth as expected and show a slight banding effect. This can best be seen when using the original "Noir" theme, both in active standby and on the default background..
    Best wishes,
    Karsten

The 6300 has an active matrix TFT screen with support for 16milion colours. In short, it should not shown any streaking, ghosting or banding.
The best option would be to take the phone to a Nokia Repair Shop and ask them if this is indeed normal for the phone or whether your phone has a defective display - in which case they will have to fix or replace it under warranty.
Experience and persistence are second to none just ask user one.
