Bandwidth usage/signal strength/dropped signal WRT160nv2

Three questions
1. How can I determine how much bandwidth each of my network devices are using.  Is there anyway to tell using Linksys easylink which is installed on my machine? I have a WRT160nv2 router.
2. Is there anyway to boost signal strength through internal settings. If so, how do I do that.
3. Been experiencing dropped signal for some wireless devices. Is there any way to determine why this happens and is there a fix for this problem.
thanks

1. Sorry no.
2. Sorry no.
3.  Change these settings in the router.  Disable UPnP, under wireless settings Beacon Interval 50, RTS and Fragmentation threshold 2304.  Change to channel 1.  Save settings.   Reconnect.

  • I updated to IOS 5 and now my signal strength drops sometimes clear to zero when I open an app.

I updated my Iphone 4 with the IOS 5 operating system.  When I use an application, including the phone app, my signal strength bars will drop from 4 or 5 bars to 1 bar and sometimes to no bars and searching for a signal.  When I exit the app the bars return tto what they were before.  I have an AT&T plan that operates in Mexico which is where I am now.  In Mexico it operates on the TelCell network.  Before updating the op system I had no problems with the signal strength dropping when I used an app.

    Hello timfromharris,
Have you gone to your date and time settings and verified that "set automatically" has been checked?
If you don't know where to go, it's Settings -> General -> Date and Time.

  • E3200 - signal strength dropped

I'm a longtime fan of Linksys equipment. But my last 2 Linksys routers have been terrible. This one worked great for about 3 weeks then the signal strength dropped so low that you have to be within 10 feet of it to connect most of the time. The signal strength is unstable and will disconnect you in the middle of important downloads. I wasn't able to get into the setup last week and ended up rebuilding it using the software. Today I am unable to get into the setup again. I don't have time to dink around with it and am on my way to the store to buy a different brand. NO MORE CISCO/LINKSYS FOR ME!

Before I suggest you any troubleshooting steps, I would like to ask few questions. Let me know the light status on the router? What is the current IP address on the computer? How frequently does it happen?
All the E series routers come with the great Cisco connect software for the easy installation. Before installing the router, make sure that your Internet is working properly through the modem. Connect your computer directly to the modem and try to go on line.
If you are able to access the Internet from the modem, then your Internet is working properly. Now insert the CD in to the same computer. Do not run the CD on any other computer. Use the same computer that you used to connect to the modem. Follow the steps of the CD. It may not ask you to connect the computer to the router. But it is recommended that you should connect your computer to the router for the initial set up of the router. You will need to connect the computer to one of the Ethernet port on the router and the modem to the Internet port on the router. That means there will be 2 connections to the router. Now go to the next step on the set up CD. It will take up to 5 minutes to set up the router. Definitely you can setup the router without CD also. You just need to open the setup page of the router and change the settings manually.
Here is the link for setting up the Router through Cisco Connect: http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=93&login=1&vw=1&app=search&articleid=22732&userrole=Links...
Second, there are many reasons why you experience poor signal or connection. Well, there are few things you should keep in mind with regards to N routers:
    1) For the best possible speeds, you need to be using WPA2-AES as your security mode. Any other security mode will see your speed/range capped.
    2) Ensure that your router is running the latest firmware from homesupport.cisco.com The new firmware includes performance enhancements and fixes.
    3) The router by default uses a channel setting of auto, which means that it would keep switching channels depending on the interference. I’d recommend you set it to a fixed channel. Usually, 1, 3, 6 and 9 give you the best performance depending on your environment of course. I’d suggest you try different channels, observing each for a while, to see which gives you the best performance. You can follow the link here on how to change channels.
Second, please verify that you have got a 802.11n card in your computer. New generation routers (i.e. E4200) speaks an entirely different language with 802.11g cards, so while those adapters can work with the E4200, but they are not optimized to provide good performance. It is like having to translate from one language to another in real time when going from N to G.

  • Signal strength dropping.

Over a period of some 12 hours wireless signal strength drops from 15 to 5. On restart it goes back to 15. What is causing this please?

    B16JOP-
That is a very good question. If your problem were caused by some external interference I would not expect it to come right back.

  • Difference between signal strength and signal qual...

Does anyone know the difference between the two scores and what they measure - and why the levels  change intermittantly. It's really affecting the quality of my tv picture.

The signal quality is actually a measure of the errors detected by the Vision box. Technically, the CBER in the advanced view is the "Corrected Bit Error Rate" measured as the  number of bit errors per billion bits received (i.e. units are 1 x 10^-9). If you had 100 bad bits in a billion bits it would display 100, but would correspond to 0.00001% error rate.
Note this is AFTER the Vision box has done its error correction. The raw Bit Error Rate is typically much higher but the broadcast signal includes information to enable the receiver to correct for most errors.
If the signal level is very high it can overload the box and result in poor quality and poor picture despite having a high signal level.
As Umpire said a signal quality of 100% will result in a perfect picture.
Do make sure that your HDMI cables are away from your aerial cables as they can cause interference. If you use the TV's Freeview tuner does that give a better picture or does it also suffer in the same way?
Also try entering your postcode into the UK Free site at http://www.ukfree.tv/transmitters.php - this gives you information about your local transmitter, including distance, scheduled engineering work and aerial recommendations.

  • Dropping signal strength

    hello,
recently I have changed from an AirPort basestation to an Airport Extreme basesation.
There are two iBooks (G3 and G4) and a PowerBook G4 using the wireless LAN.
Having now installed the latest (driver) software from Apple my iBook G4 (running on Panther) has four bars signal strength when booting or waking up. But within 20 to 30 seconds the signal strength drops to only two bars in the menu list.
This is strange to me because the PowerBook G4 (running on Tiger) has always four bars even if they are on the same table about 4 meters from the AirPort basestation away. Usually the PowerBook is further away and still has its four bars.
With my old AirPort both computers had always four bars.
Where shall I start searching to solve this?
If the signal drops even to one bar then sometimes the connection to the Internet is very poor (eg I had to click a hyperlink twice to get the page or I will run into a network timeout).
    thanks for your help
    ueli
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

the problem is solved, it had nothing to do with the change of the AirPort base stations. The iBook G4 had a broken antenna cable.

  • Finally connected but no boost in signal strength on WRE54G

It took a while but I finally got the WRE54G v 3.04.01 to connect to my network. I have a  WRT54Gs Router v2.07.1 Both blue lights are now on and it seems to be connected and working but I don't have any increase in signal strength.  I matched the SSID (broadcasting) the channel and WEP key settings. When I go over to our addition my signal strength drops to 1 or 2 bars and from 54g to 11g as indicated on my laptop. If I then connect the repeater right next to my laptop there is no signal improvement or change in anyway.  I disabled my connection and re-enabled it without any improvement either. Could it be a setting on the router or maybe it needs a firmware update? I saw on the web site that it met the minimum version at 2.07. can you please advise what i might try to increase the signal strength. thanks.k

Well I made some progress with my problem today. I'm not sure if it was a couple small changes I made on my router or just another day and a rebooting of the PC's but either way today Id downloaded a wifi signal troubleshooter called inSSIDer which let me look at both signals from the router and the expander and see what they were doing. eventually I got them placed to where I seem to have relatively equal signal strength from my basement to the upstairs of the new addition. More of less as I walk the paths but once I'm there it's not bad. I get excellent strength and connectivity so I'm not complaining yet.
My only remaining concern is if I should upgrade the firmware on my WRT54GS router or not.  it's at 2.071. which meets the minimum required to connect with the WTR54GS expander or so I read, but this router doesn't have the back up restore function on this version so I am not eager to have to completely set this thing back up again after an upgrade. Won't that reset everything back to defaults? Or does anybody here know if it saves my configurations? Somehow I doubt that it would but ya never know.

  • Reduced signal strength

    Hello,
I noticed with my time capsule 2TB that in certain spots in my apartment the signal strength dropped significantly. On my IPhone it went in average down by 2 rings, my iMAC in two rooms away is even loosing sometimes the connection. Does somebody now about this, in case not I think maybe there is an interference, is there a workaround by which I don’t lose speed?
    Thanks
    Philipp

Two walls will absorb, on average, 40-50% of the wireless signal strength.
If you think the problems are elsewhere, then you are likely picking up wireless interference from another new WiFi network near you, cordless phones, other electronic devices, etc.

  • AirPort signal strength variation/ loss

Our 17" Powerbook G4 (Aluminum) started having connectivity problems with the AirPort Extreme base station last fall. This roughly coincided with AirPort Update 2005-001 and Security Update 2005-009. There was no change in behavior of other wireless machines (e.g. iMac G4, Powermac G4 Mirrored Drive Doors).
Often, signal strength is full after a restart or awake from sleep. After some period of use (minutes) signal strength drops markedly (at the same location, without any change in orientation of the PowerBook). Often, the machine then loses network connectivity
At other time, there just is no signal strength. This is at locations as close as 10 feet from the base station.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. It used to be nice to use the PowerBook wireless, but now is generally an uncertain and unpleasant experience. My recent AppleCare experiences have made me somewhat pessimistic about the value of investing time with them.

This has been confirmed as a hardware problem, apparently at the lid hinge.
    Being addressed via AppleCare.
The hardware problem was verified fairly rapidly at the Lenox Square Genius Bar, who authorized the repair. Booting from another startup disk, for example, rapidly ruled out any software problem.
Telephone AppleCare, on the other hand, took substantially more time with no real results. Not that it was a waste of time, but it certainly was not productive and did not isolate the problem (hardware vs. software vs. base station vs. local reception).

  • Signal strength finder via black bt vision box

I have recently changed from sky (could be a big mistake) and have had constant troubles ever since.
The latest is I am getting pixelation on all tv channels.
Looking at the online "help" I have checked the aerial connections (all good), Aerial (brand new £50) and pointed in the correct direction. The next item was to use the handy signal strength checker as per BT's instructions.
However these do not appear to match what appears on screen.
You can check your Freeview signal using your Vision+ box, but please be aware that checking your signal will interrupt any recordings that are in progress. You only need to check the signal of one channel in a multiplex to know what signal you'll be getting for the whole multiplex.
    How to check your signal:
Press the BT Vision button on your remote control.
    DID THIS
    Scroll across to Settings.
SCROLL ACROSS GOES TO TV SO I SCROLLED DOWN.
NO "SETTINGS" PAGE SO WENT TO "HELP & SETTINGS"
    Select TV Settings.
    DID THIS
Select the DTT Signal Strength page.
NO "DTT SIGNAL STRENGTH" PAGE THE ONLY OPTIONS ARE 1/sCAN FOR CHANNELS, 2/ CHANNEL MANAGEMENT, 3/ TV SHAPE.
The minimum signal strength and quality you need for a good picture is:
    Signal Strength - 55%
    Signal Quality -70%
    Am I going mad ?
    Can anyone help please?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

There is good news and bad news. The good news is that you are not going mad. The bad news is that you have a new version of the software which unfortunately doesn't include a signal strength tool.
Does your TV have a Freeview tuner? If so, try using signal strength on that.
Your signal could be too weak or too strong. If it's too weak you may be able to use a booster. If it's too strong you can use an attenuator.

  • 2.1 firmware update listed signal strength display fix in its release notes

Summary to those who haven't read Apple's latest letter to iPhone 4 owners:
Apple is saying 'death grip' only affects the graphics of the signal strength not signal itself. Who accepts that? And will therefore fix this in the next firmware update.
But wait! This seems to be fixed in the 2.1 firmware update already!
    See 2.1 firmware update changelogs.
Google it, I don't want to post direct link as Apple may start pulling that information down.

Letter from Apple Regarding iPhone 4
    (emphasis mine)
    {quote}the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display *is totally wrong.*{quote}
    {quote}We will issue a free software update within a few weeks that incorporates the corrected formula. *Since this mistake has been present since the original iPhone*, this software update will also be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.{quote}
But the 2.1 firmware had in it's release notes as one of the improvements:
    {quote}improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display{quote}
So in 2.1 they improved the accuracy of a totally wrong formula?

  • In the last 1-2 months, the signal strength in my home area has dropped dramatically.

Signal strength in my home neighborhood has dropped dramatically. This is for all three phones we have here. A Samsung Note 3, Samsung 4 mini and an iPhone 4. Additionally, all who visit need to go to the front of the house to make calls. The dead zone continues for about a 2 mile radius. @

You will need to call VZW to report this issue so that they can open a trouble ticket to investigate. Call 800-922-0204 and ask for tier 2 tech support.

  • The signal strength on my first gen AE is dropping off.

The signal strength on my first gen AIrport Extreme is dropping off.  Is this an early indication of pending failure?

Well, the First Generation AirPort Extremes are about 5 years old now, and 5 years of 24/7 operation is pretty good for a modem or router, so it might be time to start thinking about upgrading to a new, faster dual band model.
Personally, I replace the modem and any routers at about 4-5 years, even if they are operating normally. But there are other things to think about as well.
Chances are, there are far more wireless networks around you than there were even a few years ago, so heavy competition for the very limited number of channels that are available may be slowing down your signal significantly.
Five years ago, I could find two or three wireless networks around me. Today, there are over twenty.
I noticed that my neighbor next door was installing a new wireless camera and security system a few days ago, and he told me it was up and running yesterday.  Yesterday, my wireless slowed down about 20%...not sure why...but I have an idea.
If you have added other wireless devices like cordless phones, Bluetooth accessories, a baby monitor, a new wireless thermostat and who knows what, all of these things can affect the performance of wireless network communications.
You have not provided any specifics on your network as far as the slow down is concerned, or mentioned any steps that you might have taken to investigate, so until we know more, we'll have to leave it at generalities and possibilities.
You never know. A new router might be just the ticket.....or.....it may offer no improvement at all. Every few days, we see a post from a user who has added a new router...and their network performance has dropped.
For this reason, if you are thinking of replacing the AirPort Extreme, you might want to check with the store on their return policies before you buy.
