  • Time Machine Value

Am I the only one who sees little value in Time Machine?
Oh, I upgraded to Leopard last Friday morning. And it IS a beautiful OS, and well worth the investment. But in the last 14 months of my MBP ownership, I have never once "accidentally deleted" something. I immediately registered Super Duper and CarbonCopyCloner back then - and make weekly full, BOOTABLE backups in case of a problem... But have never had to restore from them. But I'm ready if a main drive fails.
And I know that external hard drives are at their lowest price points in all of history.
But since Time Machine doesn't create a bootable backup, is its target audience really folks who hit the delete key too often?

True but it does exactly the same thing, with the extra security of a fresh, genuine Mac OS X installation that you can be 100% sure of, unlike your clone that might be already corrupted, primary cause of the problem you encountered in the first place.
~ Just reinstall Mac OS X using the DVD, and import your TM backup back when prompted.

Time Machine is invaluably useful for those who work on projects that are very often modified.
Of course if your files are mostly a sum of complete and finished files, of which you are interested only in their current state, then usual backup method is fine.
Personally I'm still using my SuperDuper clone for this purpose
(by the way still using Backup too for my iDisk)
and Time Machine more specifically to the files that I need to track in their evolution, or more precisely, the kind that I know very well I'm going to need in a year or two, when the whole thing's become too vague so I don't even know very well what to look for.
Time Machine is not just another backup utility.
You still can use it as if it was just that, but then ok, others work too in this limited purpose.

Let's hope a couple things: that you have bootable clones of your drives also; that the backup drive for TimeMachine has over 3x capacity of the data you plan and are storing. I would also switch TM backup drives so you have a 2nd.
Fragmented free space affecting performance happens when the drive is too full which may mean there isn't enough free space for a full backup set.
1.5TB for backing up 500GB, while WD Green 3TB is $140 and WD Black 1.5TB is, about the same price.
I'd be worried about the integrity and directory, and whether you can afford to lose that drive. Defragging is also a very slow operation. the ideal: to just clone a drive, or start over with another drive and wait. cloning TM volumes has not been done or has it? SuperDuper hoped to but I don't think they or Bombich's CCC made it there.
Trouble with highly fragged is when free space gets to 20% normally, 1/3 or so though for TM volumes, and finding where and a chunk of space for the file being written. Does TM use large spare image files of like 2GB?
Best would be to ask in the TimeMachine section Snow Leopard

  • Trying to use a new, larger external hard drive for my Time Machine backup.  However, every time I start the backup, it gets started then fails.  And, I can't delete the few files that did save on the external.  Sort of a catch 22.  Any ideas?

Is it a USB hard drive?  USB hard drives have the problem of not giving full speed if they are hooked up on the same bus as keyboards and mice.  Double check your profiler to make sure that is not a problem.  If it is Firewire, make sure there aren't other firewire devices in use at the same time.  I recommend not only keeping a Time Machine backup, but also a clone, and if you do use Time Machine, to make sure the Time Machine drive or partition is at least twice the size of the original drive.

  • I have a 250GB western digital external hard drive for my time machine backups. if i just want to backup and recover my photos and movies how do i do that with time machine?

I have a 250GB western digital external hard drive for my time machine backups. I did not download the software that came with the external HD. If I only want to backup my photos and movies from my Macbook how do I do that in Tme Machine with my external HD?

Format the HDD in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the open System Preferences>Time Machine and set up the external disk as the Time Machine HDD.  Then look at the Options, and exclude what you do not want backed up.
    Ciao.

  • Can I use my 2TB WD My Book Essential for the Time Machine feature on the MacBook as well as two other Windows computers (one running 7 and one with Vista)?

Can I use my 2TB WD My Book Essential for the Time Machine feature on the MacBook as well as to store information from two other Windows computers (one running 7 and one with Vista)?

Yes you can but you need to partition the drive into at least 2 separate drives.
To do that you need to use a Windows PC to do the first partitioning. Say you split the drive into two partitions each 1TB (or close to 1TB) each.
Partition fand format both partitions on a Win PC as one NTFS and the other FAT32.
Then move it to the Mac and Reformat the FAT32 partition Mac Extended (Journaled) with a GUID Partition Table.
I have that same drive and that is what I did originally with it. I now have it just for the Mac as I have other externals for the Win systems.
    Good Luck.

  • Can i partition my internal disk on macbook prop for using time machine?

    Hi
I have a macbook pro from 2010 running OS 10.6.8 and I want to upgrade to Yosemite. I want to back up first and I have never used Time Machine before so I have to set it up. Do I need to have an external hard drive or can I use the internal one and partition it? any help appreciated please....
    thanks so much.

Yes you can, BUT DON'T!  If your internal HDD fails, you backup will disappear with it.  Backups should always be on a separate HDD.  Look at this web site for excellent Time Machine information:

    Ciao.

Yes, it will do a full backup.
and if so, do I really need all the old backups on my smaller external drive?
Only if you want to be able to go back in time to those previous Time Machine backups.  When you plug in the new larger external drive, you will only be able to go back as far as the first day you plugged it in and ran the first Time Machine backup on it.

I have a new external drive for my time machine.  My hard drive of 650 gb is full.  It is reallyslow backing up to my external drive.  I have to stay near by as it stops after an hour or so.  If I'm not here to restart it, I lose all that time it could have been backing up. It says it is going to take 581 days. Eventually it will say 12 days. Back up time is all over the place.  How can I keep the machine backing up when I sleep at night.
    Gerald

I would go into your  in the upper left corner of the mac
    Click on system preferences
    Click on energy saver
Change the computer sleep and display sleep to never.

Do you get this window when you hold down the Command+Option keys and launch iPhoto?
If not then you're not holding down both keys long enough.

  • How can create room in icloud for the time machine on the mac

I don't like to be carrying a time capsule around. Just need some space in the icloud for the Time Machine. Is that too hard to do?

    vcngu wrote:
Backing up a Macpro in icloud shouldn't be rocket science or is it?
No, it is very simple really, iCloud does not back up from Time Machine, or any other OSX program come to that. iCloud IS NOT an OSX backup system.

Unfortunately when Adobe products are restored from backup, especial CS4 and especially Mac, it breaks licensing.
There is a python script included in the license recovery kit that should work if you are familiar with Terminal.
If not, you must reinstall your CS4 suite.  You don't need to delete your preferences, so it should be the same as before.
