Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB Internal Sata Drive

Hi Gang
Looking for a few internal drives to use with the Rocket Sata 2310;
This drive (particularly the 1TB version), had critical issues earlier this year. OWC informs me that they cleared up those issues. It seems to be priced lower (more affordable), than other drives.

Unfortunately for dual core G5 users, the Seritek (2SE2-E and 2ME4-E) cards only support external eSATA enclosures.
The 2ME4-E does allow up to 20 drives to be connected with port multiplication supported housings like the Seritek PM5.
The 2SE2-E only supports 2 drives, as port multiplication is not supported.
I am sure that external only support is due to the limited interior upgrade options due to G5 case design, and although 3 or even 4 drives may be fit internally (kit or otherwise), heat (and possibly power) then becomes the enemy.
Not insurmountable, but a real consideration.....
Unfortunately, again, Highpoint service and support is a constant area of contention with users (Mac and PC).
Sonnet isn't too much of a worry.
I don't think BDAqua's experience isn't indicative of a pervasive problem with the line.
In fact, Firmtek controllers (and firmware) are used in Sonnet SATA controllers.
For your intended purposes. the Sonnet may be a better choice.
I know the cash outlay is the issue, and it is too bad that you have so much invested in FW800 externals....
The Firmtek 2ME4-E and a couple of PM5 enclosures with 10x 2TB drives would go a very long way to meet, even exceed, any of your storage needs.

A clone is a functional copy of the original, including the internal links & setting that makes it bootable if the original is. Time Machine will not make a clone of a volume, nor will a Finder copy. You can make a clone with the appropriate settings in the "Restore" tab of Disk Utility but many users find purpose-designed cloning utilities easier & simpler to use. The two most popular of these are SuperDuper! & Carbon Copy Cloner. Both are very reliable, easy to use, & well documented.
I prefer SuperDuper! for reasons that are not important here. However, even if you decide to use CCC, I suggest that you download SuperDuper! just to read the extensive documentation that comes with it.

SMART failure on internal SATA drive - Can I recover data or disable SMART?

One of my internal SAT drives (a Western Digital RE2 500gb drive) appears to be giving up the ghost and is reporting a SMART failure. The drive is mounting and shows that it has 100gb available but I can't access the data held in the missing 400gb.
I've run a TechTool report on it which has come back stating a failure on the following 2 points out of 15 tests:
• Reallocated Sector Counts
• Seek error rate
Appreciate that the drive is on its way out but is there anything i can do do retrieve the 400gb of data on it now before is completely dies? Can SMART be disabled on that drive to allow me to access it?
Any help would be appreciated.

It's not that SMART is preventing you from accessing it, the drive has had a physical failure. It may be possible to recover some data with a data recovery tool, like [Data Rescue|http://www.prosofteng.com> or [File Salvage|http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1], or you could send it off to a data recovery service, but there are no guarantees. If the data on that drive is not backed up, I'd guess you're about to learn a painful lesson about backups.

Removing internal SATA drives from a Power Mac

I need instructions for removing 2 internal SATA drives from a 2005 G5 tower

Addendum - I ordered a "Macally G-S350SUA Hi-Speed eSATA/FireWire/USB2.0 Storage Enclosure for 3.5-Inch SATA HDD" from Amazon to plug into my laptop to access the data. Do either of you know if I ordered a Mac Mini if it would not only connect to these SATA drives but also the external Mac monitor that I used with my old G5 tower?

New internal SATA Drive can't access internet or e-mail

I'm re-posting this since it never got resolved, but I've paraphrased to try keep it more concise:
I recently added an internal 500GB SATA drive (and PCI card) to my G4 (partitioned 100GB for apps and remainder for storage). The old HD is running OS X 10.2.8, and I initialized the new HD with a fresh version of 10.3. I set up my Network settings exactly as they are on the old HD (at least I'm 99% sure), but I'm unable to access the Internet and set up e-mail from the new HD. In fact, the new HD doesn't seem to recognize any of my peripherals (DVD burner, printer, cable modem, etc.).
At first I got an error claiming an IP address couldn't be found. So I changed the TCP/IP Config from DHCP to manual DHCP just to see if the status changed, which it did: "Built-in Ethernet is currently active and has the IP address [IP]. You are connected to the internet via Built-in Ethernet"; but it still didn't work.
And when I tried to set up e-mail, I got this error:
"The POP server “mail.[ISP].net” is not responding. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the “Incoming Mail Server” field. If it still doesn’t respond, the server might be temporarily unavailable. If you continue, you may not be able to receive any email."
FYI - the IP address is in the 192.168.0.0 through 192.168.255.255 range, and both e-mail and internet access work fine on the original (10.2.8) drive.
I know I'm doing something wrong, but can someone help me figure out what? Should I have installed 10.2.8 on the new HD first, and then upgraded it to 10.3?

Internal SATA drives on G5 Dual 2ghz?

Is there any difference at all between drive bay "A" and bay "B?"
I know that we can make boot drives for either, but is there any advantage to having the primary drive be in bay "A" -vs- "B?"
Additionally, if both are loaded with bootable systems, can the drives be swapped without any consequences? I guess I'm wondering whether there is any reason Apple puts the stock drive in bay "A." Thoughts?

Oops! I forgot to ask one more related thing.
These new giant 750 SATA drives, the Barracudas. Are there any limitations installing these in an "old" G5 dual 2ghz?... In other words, is my G5 still up to date enough to take advantage of the latest SATA technology? I'm having trouble sorting through the various model numbers and just wanted to know if my older hardware could still enjoy the ride.
Anybody put in a 10,000 rpm Western Digital SATA? Is there a big speed boost? A Windows guy was suggesting a system with a small 10,000 rpm drive like that in bay A with just the system on it, and then storing applications and such on a larger SATA in Bay B. Can that be done? Is it a good idea?

Please Help: problems with 2nd internal SATA drive on G5

Hello everyone,
I was transferring and deleting very large files from my main drive, a 2nd 250GB SATA internal drive, and an external 250GB FW800 drive recently (about 50GB worth of data transfered), and decided to run disk warrior and repair my permissions/verify disk in disk utilities once completed.
Everything seemed fine until I verified my 2nd internal drive upon which I received the following error: "First Aid Failed" citing "Invalid node structure" and that the volume needs to be repaired. I attempted to Repair disk, though the process stops and I get the same error "Volume could not be repaired because of an error."
This 2nd SATA drive only holds data (I'm a musician so it only holds sample data for streaming in Logic) but it contains allot of information (185GB used of 233GB) which according to my math comes out to about 80% used. This should be acceptable amount, correct? The drive also has Journaling enabled, though I'm not sure if its relevant or not.
What should I do? The drive itself seems to be working fine, but why would disk utility have a problem reading/repairing it if its indeed fine. Should I be worried? The drive is probably no more than 2 years old, so it cant be drive failure yet, can it?

Update: I tried to graph the problem drive again in diskwarrior, and this time an error occurred! This obviously did not happen the first time I used diskwarrior to graph and build a new directory, so something must have happened recently. What could have happened? What should I do?

Hmm, I think I once had a drive with a directory problem that couldn't be fixed with DiskWarrior without journaling being (temporarily) disabled. After disabling journaling, I used DiskWarrior to Rebuild the drive's directory, then I reenabled journaling.

I'm afraid it could be, I've had drives fail at any time between half a year after purchase up to 3 or more years after. Though often one hears the drive "die", or notices very slow performance due to bad blocks being weeded out, and the S.M.A.R.T. status - visible in Disk Utility (only for internal drives) in the bottom right, when you select a drive (not volume) is an indicator of a harddisk's health as well (though not the most complete, see this hint, or S.M.A.R.T. Guard).

So did the Repair with DiskWarrior not finish? What kind of error was it?
In my experience, DiskWarrior mostly fixed any directory trouble. For more serious cases, see this thread.

My experience says that internal SATA definitely is more stable than External firewire.
Besides many other external devices (audio interface for example) also uses the firewire bus.
Also you shouldn't find the cheapest option when buying a hard drive. Your drive is an essential device, and losing data is no fun.

Safely Remove icon on internal SATA drives

I have latest driver for ASMedia SATA installed(2.0.8).Now two of my HDDs is in Safely Remove Hardware icon.And there is no "Policies" tab in controller properties,like in previous drivers.How can i fix it?

Good internal SATA drives for a DPG5 2G

I have 2 internal drives:
Maxtor 6H500F0
Maxtor 7H500F0
I've put in the jumper to limit the transfer speeds, BUT these are running SLOW. Sometimes my system comes to a beach ball crawl, and duplicating a 10M file has taken as long as 20 secs.
I'm looking for 500G minimum, and good for audio/video editing. Anybody have suggestions for drives that work well OR maybe what's wrong with these??

Today I did a fresh install & UG to 10.4.7 on another partition of the drive having trouble. It took forever, and while booted on this fresh system I'm getting the same results. Duplicating a 40M file took about a minute, and the whole system beach balled while it was doing it & I never even got a progress bar. I'm going to have another look at the jumper on this drive, but if I don't find a solution quick I'm just going to replace it. I'm not sure what else to do here & in the past, trying to "fix" these things has wound up being a waste of time.

ATA internal hard drives and SATA hard drives?

I've been searching through the posts and am starting to think I've got the oldest running Mac Mini!
My Mac Mini is installed with a 40 gb ATA hard drive and I think I need to upgrade to a larger internal drive. Although 80-100 gig's would be enough (I have a 250 gig external Firewire drive, I would prefer to go to a 160-320 gig drive, but all of the drives I've found in that size range are SATA drives. From reading the posts I've found so far, it looks to me as if my Mac won't host an internal SATA drive. Can anyone confirm that for me? Am I stuck with ATA drives only? If I'm limited to ATA drives, does anyone know where I can find a large ATA drive suitable for my Mac Mini?
I appreciate any help or advice anyone can offer.

Internal scsi drives on mac pro?

I have just received my Mac Pro, which will soon be put into use as the center of a commercial audio recording facility. I was under the impression that the SCSI drives I had been using in my aging MDD dual 1 GHZ would be port-able to the new box. But, after snooping around a little bit on the boards here, and looking into the machine itself, this appears not to be possible.
Is it true that ONLY SATA drives are compatible as internal drives in the new Macs?
If so, then I need to sort out my new drive configuration for the studio machine. For better or worse, my studio uses ProTools, which does not support RAID of any sort. So I'm left looking at sharing the internal SATA bus with the system drive, going with an external FW800 drive, or investing in an external SCSI drive (ugh).
Any thoughts would be welcome.

following up on this thread -
I purchased the external chassis recommended above and have compared transfer rates with the somewhat unscientific copy time test, from the desktop of the apple SATA boot drive to and between various other drives. It appears that the internal SATA 7200RPM drive I bought from OWC is outperforming the external (10000RPM) SCSI drives I have mounted in the enclosure. This seems odd to me. I'm not sure if the bus speed is being ratcheted down to accommodate the cabling (SCSI 3) or what. I appear to be getting roughly one third of the 160MB/S limit on the Ultra160 drive (the buffer size is 8MB on this drive as opposed to 16MB on the 7200 drive).
Theoretically, the bus throughput is higher on the SATA bus, but I thought that would be outweighed by the drive performance - that appears not to be true. It also appears that the SATA drive is FASTER on the duplication process than the SCSI drive, which leads me to believe that the rotation speed is being trumped by something else - buffer size perhaps?
Any thoughts would be welcome. Here are the results of my testing.
Copying 1.27GB .zip archive:
desktop to 2nd internal SATA drive: 19 seconds (68MB/S or .53Gb/S)
desktop to external SCSI drive: 25 seconds (52MB/S)
2nd internal SATA to desktop: 19 seconds (68MB/S)
Duplicating 1.27GB .zip archive on the same drive:
internal SATA: 50 seconds
external SCSI drive #2: 58 seconds

External SATA drive not mounting

I have now been on the phone 3x witht eh clowns at OWC, who btw, do not know their product because they gave me the wrong advice twice. I'm now on hold for a third time. I thought you guys might be faster.
I bought a OWC mercury elite dual drive enclosure. eSATA connectors. I moved an internal SATA drive into it to be external.
I bought a Seri-Tek1SE2 card. My pci-x slots are supposed to work with this PCI card. It is recognized in the apple profiler.
The problem, the disk doesn't mount on the computer. The machine is on. Seems to work, but can't find it in profiler or disk utilities.
Please help me troubleshoot, someone, PLEASE!!!!!

Sata drives

howdy.
i'm about to transfer from external (firewire) drives to internal sata. Elsewhere in this forum its advised to go for drives with a 16mg buffer. Can you get that with sata1? Seems like only sata2 drives are advertised as 16mg, and I don't think my g5 can handle sata2 (could be wrong there).
And is it that important? Haven't had too many problems with my Lacie firewire drives (touch wood), which I think are 8mg. I tend to run samples a lot more than record audio.
Also, once I've transferred to sata drives, what are the chances I could run a Liquid Mix and my 828 off the same firewire bus?

are you physically removing the drives from your external FW enclosures and putting them inside your G5? or do you mean you're just transfering the data to an internal SATA drive that you've installed?
you shouldn't introduce any problems by using internal SATA instead of FW. it's faster anyway because external FW drives lose some performance due to the fact that they are SATA drives internally anyway, and the data has to be bridged across to FW and back again.
as for the liquid mix and 828 sharing the FW bus.. if there aren't any specific driver issues that cause either one to not play nice with the other, then in theory you should have enough bandwidth to be OK for most if not all usage. if you tend not to use every single possible i/o channel of the 828 at all times, then your chances of having enough bandwidth are pretty good I'd have thought.
you have another option though.. if you don't want to replace your 828 with a PCI-based audio interface, and you have at least one free PCI slot.. you could look for a PCI card that adds one or more extra FW buses (and more ports) to your G5. I don't think it would be outlandishly pricey, and it would be bye bye to any FW bandwidth problems.

Mac Pro Internal Hard Drive Raid and Size

I have out grown hard drive storage space on my Mac Pro. Currently, I have a 300 Gig system drive and 500Gig Scratch Drive. I am considering purchasing two 1000Gig drives because I could use a very large volume of video storage.
I would think that an internal SATA drive has a better read when compared to a FireWire/USB 2.0 Drive
In addition I want to RAID the two 1000Gig drives to increase my read/write speed and provide some measure of redundancy.
Any Suggestions as to type of RAID, how to format and create the RAID.
Also any suggestions as to brand of drive to purchase.
