Barracuda Reputation Problem

Hi
Has anyone come across problems with emails from a BT home broadband connection being bounced by Barracuda Reputation ? Am getting the error below when trying to email one particular recipient. Tried resetting the BT HomeHub to get a different dynamic IP which I did (86.132.88.147), but still getting this same issue. Running a home Mac, no mail server, no spam etc. Does it sound like maybe a range of BT IPs has found its way onto Barracuda's blacklist ?
Recipient address: <address removed>
Reason: SMTP transmission failure has occurred
Diagnostic code: smtp;554 Service unavailable; Client host [asmtpout030.mac.com] blocked using Barracuda Reputation; http://bbl.barracudacentral.com/q.cgi?ip=86.132.88.147

Richard,
I use 3 partitions - one for o.s., one for the apps, and one for data files. To back up my hard drive, I only need to backup the data file partition. Everything else is replaceable. This makes backup files much smaller.

  • I've got a '522 IP REPUTATION BAD' - btinternet no...

Apologies for re-posting this query (originally a comment in another thread) as a new message.
I appear to have a 'reputation' problem. Overnight, my ability to receive emails has disappeared - a huge blow, both personally and professionally.  It *may* coincide with a recent business trip overseas where I was using my laptop to access email via various Wi-Fi and mobile networks (don't know if that's a red herring, but it does make me wonder).
For many years I've had my domain hosted by easily.co.uk.   I use this service essentially for mail forwarding: emails sent to my "nice" public email address are forwarded by easily to my "ugly" @btinternet.com address.
Since yesterday, all emails sent to my "nice" address are no longer being accepted by btinternet - so I don't even know I'm receiving them.  Here's a typical failure message (I've altered addresses for obvious reasons):
    A message sent by
      <XXXXXXXXXXX>
could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. The following
    address(es) failed:
      [email protected]
        (ultimately generated from [email protected])
SMTP error from remote mail server after MAIL FROM:<[email protected]138.srs.netbenefit.com> SIZE=3007:
host mx.bt.lon5.cpcloud.co.uk [65.20.0.49]: 522 IP REPUTATION BAD  (please check for IP address listing on reputation services)
A quick check with mxtoolbox.com confirms my fears: I've been "listed in the ivmSIP/24 blacklists, indicating that your IP Address has been identified as a spam-sending server".
Whether it's just some over-zealous security systems getting in the way - or something more sinister - I just don't know. But my obvious question is "how can I stop being blacklisted, and start receiving emails again?"
My frustration/powerlessness is a complete ignorance of who to turn to. BT? My domain host (easily.co.uk)? How do I get them to play nicely again?
Many thanks, and apologies for the obvious newbie lack of knowledge,
    Chris

Hiya, no solution for you I'm afraid but we have exactly the same issue - my husband's business emails are forwarded from his own domain (also registered with Easily) to his btopenworld account.  He has had no business emails for 2 days and presumably the customers who have tried to email him are getting the same bounce message I'm getting when I email him (same error as you've recorded, 522 reputation bad).  I too have a domain registered with easily but my ISP/mail account is plusnet - my mail is forwarding absolutely fine.
I've checked his 'registered addresses' in his bt account and his domain address is still there with all the original settings.
Having had a whole weekend of no email 2 weeks ago and now this, I'm considering setting him up with a gmail account and will have the domain forward to that.  It's an absolute pain in the behind but BT is just not dependable enough at the moment

I have been in touch with msn support, but no one has got back to me yet. I'm not a spammer, the mail I'm trying to send is actually in reply to my clients mail. It's a magazine deadline looming and the majority of the copy I receive is from roving contributers using hotmail rather than static accounts, to whom I cannot, at the moment reply.
Any suggestions from the community gratefully received.
I'm UK based. The email that is being blocked is from the domain @davyart.co.uk, main account is [email protected]
NTL cable accessed through airport through a dlink router that plugs into the cable modem.
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Glen.
    Thanks for the input.
The issue is not that I am can't reply to the hotmail accounts as I run "belt and braces" email accounts, including a .mac account. I can reply, just not from my domain, which is an inconvenience at worst.
It is rather a plea for help as to how to get my domain unblocked by hotmail. I'm not a spammer or distributing dodgy material, I'm just trying to reply to hotmail received.
Anyone else experienced and resolved this?

  • Verizon email server on RBL

I'm an independent IT consultant and have a customer who is having many emails send to all different parties rejected by anyone running Barracuda.  It appears it is due to Verizon's email server being listed on an RBL.  Can we please get this resolved ASAP?  Thanks.

Actually, you'll need to contact Barracuda. Verizon will just send you back to them, since Verizon doesn't control their lists.

  • Returned mail

I am getting mail returned for no apparent reason, other than they always appear to be sent to msn.com addresses. One of the addresses was actually sent to msn.com but returned as hotmail.com (??). There were several other email addresses (aol, comcast, .mac) that were delivered fine. Here is the text of the returned mail:

Hi, just came to the boards to see if I could get help as I have inexplicably begun having this exact same issue with one msn.com email I correspond with frequently (a good friend). Up to now, no issues. It's a good friend and we email back and forth frequently.
    Did you ever get resolution?
Strange for me is I sent an email just this a.m., had just gotten a response this eve and replied back to get the bounceback message as you quote. I wonder if my friend didn't somehow unknowingly invoke settings? Hard to imagine, but I don't know msn.com . Thanks

  • Some emails bouncing to known good addresses

I am getting failures on some emails to email addresses that I know are valid. I am just replying to emails I just received.
    Here is the error:
Reason: SMTP transmission failure has occurred
Diagnostic code: smtp;554 Service unavailable; Client host [vms173005pub.verizon.net] blocked using Barracuda Reputation
Anyone have any ideas. Sounds like verizon's email servers are being blocked.

The IP Address for [vms173005pub.verizon.net] is 206.46.173.5.  According to http://www.barracudacentral.org/reputation,  that IP address is not currently listed as "poor" on the Barracuda Reputation System.  So... I'm looking into it .  Is your verizon IP static or DHCP?

  • EMAIL RATE LIMITATION error msg

I sent an email to my sis [whom I email on a regular basis] and 3 days later it came back undelivered with the following message:
Temporary error returned by SMTP partner.
smtp;421 RP-001 The mail server IP connecting to Windows Live Hotmail server has exceeded the rate limit allowed.
Reason for rate limitation is related to IP/domain reputation problems.
Does this mean I might have a virus that's using my email client to spam other people? What does it mean?

A valid email address should have the form "[email protected]" with only one "@" character and no spaces.

  • Email sent from Thunderbird is rejected by servers

Over the last few months I've noticed many of our clients' email servers rejecting mail sent by me via Thunderbird. When I send mail or reply to mail via iphone, ipad, or the web client for gmail (our mail is hosted by gmail for business) there isn't a rejection (typically a 554 denied, rejected by server; or 554 service unavailable, client host blocked using barracuda reputation. I had an html signature with an attached logo for a while, which is when this seems to have started but may just be a coincidence. I've since removed the logo and html signature but the errors continue...
What can I do? I don't know of a better way to handle email on my Mac.

If your on a reputation blocklist I suggest you contact them about what you need to do to be removed see http://www.barracudacentral.org/rbl/listing-methodology
You might also ask your business host how you managed to get on a blocklist. (being on a shared server for your hosting with a spammer is usually the way it happens)

We have Cisco VPN on ASA for over 4 years. Recently, barracudacentral.org blocks our outgoing email because of these reasons: •Your email server contains a virus and has been sending out spam. •Your email server may be misconfigured. •Your PC may be infected with a virus or botnet software program. •Someone in your organization may have a PC infected with a virus or botnet program. •You may be utilizing a dynamic IP address which was previously utilized by a known spammer. •Your marketing department may be sending out bulk emails that do not comply with the CAN-SPAM Act. •You may have an insecure wireless network which is allowing unknown users to use your network to send spam. •In some rare cases, your recipient's Barracuda Spam Firewall may be misconfigured. This is the undeliverable message: barracudacentral.org rejected your message to the following e-mail addresses and  gave this error: Service unavailable; Client host [VPN IP address-illinois.hfc.comcastbusiness.net] blocked using Barracuda Reputation; http://bbl.barracudacentral.com/q.cgi?ip=VPN IP Address The IP address they blocks is our VPN server. • Hotmail blocking emails from iMS5.2 relay server???

Hi all, lately we have started experiencing problems sending emails from our iMS5.2 environment to hotmail.
In our iMS5.2 environment, we have two mail relays/gateways. Today I tried manually sending emails to hotmail using telnet. I found that I was able to send an email from one gateway (gw2) but not the other (gw1). On the mail gateway that I can't send an email, gw1, using telnet, I get the following error:
550 Your e-mail was rejected for policy reasons on this gateway. Reasons for rejection may be related to content such as obscene language, graphics, or spam-like characteristics (or) other reputation problems. For sender troubleshooting information, please go to http://postmaster.msn.com. Please note: if you are an end-user please contact your E-mail/Internet Service Provider for assistance.
A search on Google reveals this blocking is quite common with hotmail.
Emails sent to yahoo, gmail work fine.
Am I right is thinking that hotmail is blocking emails that originate from iMS5.2 mail gateway gw1? And if so, what can be done to remedy the situation?
    Thanks in advance,
    Stewart

This isn't so much a iMS5.2 question as a simple SMTP Host question. HotMail is likely blocking your site by IP address. You could change the IP address of the host, but this might be a symptom to a larger problem of abuse.
My advice is to go through the mail.log files to identify when those emails were originally sent to Hotmail. It might reveal a potential problem which might be an internal spammer.

  • Mac Pro (First Generation) problem with 1TB Seagate Barracuda

    Hi Macianer,
I have a first generation Mac Pro which was sold with max. 750GB Hard drives for each bay. At this time I am grabbing for straws and maybe someone has any info on this problem.
I purchased 4 x 1TB Seagate Barracuda hard drives ( Model: ST31000340AS / Firmware: SD15 ), did a regular format after I purchased them ( GUID Partition Table, Journaled HFS+ File System). I am using 2 of them internally (they get quite hot and i didn't want to put all 4 of them in there) and two of them externally (backup purposes). The other two internal bays are covered by 2x 500GB Barracuda drives.
I put all four 1 TB hard drived through a 1 week stress test to make sure I am not dealing with bad apples. So far this practice served me well.
Now 2 weeks later one completely crashed (internal boot drive). It sounded to spin up alright but was not accessible at all. I went to BestBuy and GeekSquad said this drive is crashed and I returned it.
Since I had a backup I didn't worry too much. I put the back up hard drive in as the new boot drive (since it was a SuperDuper duplicat) it worked like a charm. Now the second hard drive starts temporarily freezing the system for 2-4 minutes and seems to get stuck showing the great colored ball of doom. After the freeze it continues to operate normal again and I am able to continue my work.
I ran the Disk Utility and I got the following message:
    INVALID KEY LENGTH
    VOLUME CHECK FAILED.
ERROR: FILESYSTEM VERIFY OR REPAIR FAILED.
It just seems weird, I never had problems with hard drives and now I get these problems with 3-4 week old hard drives.
I was in a chat with seagate support. First question to trouble shoot: Do you have access to a PC. My answer was no since Microsoft Vista I donated all of them to the Salvation Army. He asked if I formatted the hard drives low level and MBR with HFS+. I said since I do not have access to PC nor do I plan on using my hard drives for PC I formatted it regular with GUID and HFS+. I asked if there is any history of these drives that would help explain my experience. I was hoping for a recall or something of that sort or something that a firmware upgrade would remedy.
I guess my question is, is the first generation Mac Pro, even though it seems to format and run them fine, not able to handle 1TB hard drives on a daily basis. Or am I dealing with hard drive problems? The Seagate guy didn't seem to be of any help.
Any help is appreciated or even pointers that would help me in finding the problem.
    Cheers,

Excellent questions, I too am looking at SSD.
Some things I know about SSD:
    1. Intel recently released new firmware for their SSD drives to improve long term performance including Trim/Garbage collection.
    2. SSD drives can be setup as SLC or MLC - SLC is faster read 2X, write 4X over MLC, however SLC is smaller capacity. SLC also has a longer life span.
    3. Intel plans to have an 320GB X25-M (MLC) and a 128GB X25-E (SLC) out soon.
OSX does not fully support Trim and I'm not aware of any 3rd party software for OSX that helps in the garbage collection area. Diskeeper 2010 for Windows 7 provides full support for all variants of SSD, but nothing on the Mac side.
I'm probably going to wait for 2010 to see what comes out, SSD appears to be good news, but it still also seems to have issues. Given the cost of these drivers and the frequent firmware updates, a wait and see is my choice.
I've thought about going with a SAS RAID controller and 15K RAID drivers, but the cost/performance ratio comes out about the same and the 15K drives are noisey and power hungry but they're a "known" entity.

  • Problem with my company's web filter, Barracuda when I try to access the internet

I'm having problems accessing the internet on my tour.  Ever since my company put me on their BlackBerry Enterprise Server it appears that when accessing certain web sites the Barracuda web filter comes on.  It's so frustrating... on top of it my company doesn't pay for my phone at all.  Therefore, I do use my BlackBerry for personal as well as business.
I spoke with the IT guy and he initially thought it was the Desktop Software I downloaded to my computer, but we have uninstalled it and re-booted my phone and it's still happening.  I called Verizon Wireless and they tell me that it's because I'm on the company's enterprise server and that I am tied to their internet service and that's why I'm getting the Barracuda access denied on certain sites that they have restricted.  I am incredibly frustrated and don't know what to do...  I want to stay on their server because of the push email and the synchronization  for all my contacts and calendar.  Any help is much appreciated...
    Thanks.

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
Just to be sure that this is clear -- they are not "designed" as you state...rather, the BES admins can force all Internet traffic through BES (and thereby apply filters) or they can allow it to go direct through the carrier network. The IT Policy placed onto the device at BES activation is in control of how the traffic flows.

  • Barracuda spam filter not downloading mail to xserve - smtp problem?

    Hi-
We just had to upgrade from 10.3 to 10.5 last week (a nightmare that seems to be continuing). We seem to be up and running but there is a weeks accumulation of mail on our barracuda spam filter thzt is not coming through plus any new e-amil from outside the network. Mail seems to be working okay from within the doman. I did a serveradmin check on mail and it is running. In looking through other posts I tried to telnet into the smtp port. I get a timeout when I try to connect from another machine. When I try through localhost I get:
    sh-3.2# telnet localhost smtp
    Trying ::1...
telnet: connect to address ::1: Connection refused
    Trying ::1...
telnet: connect to address ::1: Can't assign requested address
    Trying ::1...
telnet: connect to address ::1: Connection refused
    Trying ::1...
telnet: connect to address ::1: Can't assign requested address
    Trying 127.0.0.1...
    Connected to localhost.
    Escape character is '^]'.
    220 xserve.testeq.com ESMTP Postfix
    quit
    221 2.0.0 Bye
The mail.log file does show that the Barracuda is connecting but possibly intermitently?
Of course there could be another problem involved but does anyone have an idea of what may be happening?
    Thanks,
    Alan Husby
    Test Equipment Corporation
Any ideas as to why this should be happening?

Okay - I found a problem with /private/anvil, added anvil line to master.cf and then ran the /etc/postfix/post-install script - Are there any other post install scripts that no one saw fit to put in the documentation that need to run?
I can now connect to the smtp port from another machine. I still get the above errors when I connect to localhost (but it does connect, I forgot to mention above). Still no sign of the weeks worth of mail backed up on the barracuda...
