Base model Mac Mini Leopard Performance

Hi im new around here.
I have had a Macbook for about a year now. The only upgrade I got when i brought it was 1gb of ram (was 512mb standard at the time).
I also have a 6 month old pc that im bored with, and as macs can now run windows i have no need to have the pc so will be selling it on.
Im thinking of getting a Low end Mac Mini with the 1gb of ram and 1.83ghz processor. How well will this run leopard in comparison to my Macbook running Tiger?
Im hopeing that it will run in a similar way or better but not keeping my hopes up :\
Cheers for any help

I think it will be very similar in performance to running Tiger on your 1 Gig Macbook.
And in some ways, more responsive, since the Finder is less likely to beachball when waiting for network resources.
And if you track down legacy apps that cause Rosetta to run -- and replace or eliminate these apps -- then performance will be even better.
Utilities > Activity Monitor is a good tool to find those old legacy PPC apps.

  • HDMI  confusion on latest entry model Mac Mini?

I have just been looking at the Apple Store's spec sheet for the entry model Mac mini and have this query:-
It has an HDMI socket but the blurb only mentions that it can be used for multi-channel audio.
For me, the whole point of HDMI is that it can transport VIDEO to something like an attached HDTV.
Can it also work with video and if so, why have they omitted to list that in the spec sheet?

Thanks, but I am probably not buying a Mini.
I usually go for iMacs but have noticed that Minis are more powerful than I thought .  .  .  .  .  and the base model is only a third the cost of  the new 27" iMac  .  .   . .  . though it does come without the display etc. which I would need, together with the more advanced processor, video card, hard drive, RAM, keyboard, mouse etc. etc. for video editing.
Nevertheless it is quite tempting  .  .  .  maybe I'll get both in a moment of madness.
P.S.  I know I could use my 40" Sony HDTV as a display but unfortunately even the latest TVs are overscanned, resulting in the edges of the computer desktop being cutoff.

  • How to run: Mac Mini + Leopard + 1080p ?

Can someone tell me on how to run Mac Mini + Leopard + 1080p? I tried running SwitchRex X 3.7.10 and I was not able to make it work. I read DisplayConfigX may work. Thanks.

Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much free RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • Why is my mac mini slower performance after upgrade to OS X Mavericks.

Since I updated my standard mac mini mid 2011 ( CPU I5 2.5 GHz , 4 GB 1333 DDR3, AMD Radeon HD 6630 256 MB DDR5 , 500 GB harddrive 5400 ) to OS X Mavericks it starts up slower , operates slower when working on it and shuts down slower then when OS X Lion was installed.
In short for me it does not perform as it has been advertised , being the better, easier and faster new OS X.
Is this something that will be resolved or is this it ?

Here's the result of etrecheck maybe somebody can tell me if there is a problem :

  • Mac Mini - Leopard kernel panic

    Hi
I have been having a recurring kernel panic on my Intel Mac mini since upgrading to Leopard. I run my Mac mini as a home server, so after logging in I tend to leave it alone downloading a few things.
However, when I return to it after a few hours it has suffered a kernel panic and asks me to hold down the power button.
Here is the backtrace I get. I would very grateful if someone experienced could give me any idea of what is causing the panic (is it something to do with the airport?). I've submitted the crash report to Apple several times.

I'm curious how you installed Leopard - was it an upgrade install (the default option), an archive and install or an erase and install?
If either of the first two, did the mini show any signs of instability at all before the update to Leopard?
Also, what software is installed on the device, and peripherals connected to it, and while you describe it as being used as a 'home server' exactly what is it that it does?
You could be suffering kernel panics as a result of several things, not least that there is something still on the system from the prior OS that Leopard isn't compatible with and which would have justified an erase and install and a full reinstall of software; that there is software in use which is not fully Leopard compatible; that there is an external device which is causing the problem; that there is an internal hardware problem - typically RAM.

  • Kernel Panics at Mac Mini Leopard

    Hi guys,
I have been experiencing regular kernel panics for the past two weeks and after calling twice Apple i decided to go on with a posting. Here is a briefing of what happened...
I bought the mini with Tiger just before Leopard was released. It had 1gb of RAM but on the spot I asked them to upgrade it with 1 more so in total I have 2 gb now. When Leopard was released -a month later or so -I bought it from apple and did and upgrade. The mac mini was working fine for almost a year but recently it started to crash with the screen going grey and a message saying "you need to restart your computer by holding down the switch on button" in several languages. This is a kernel panic as far as I know.
I decided to go for an archive and install of Leopard but the problem persisted. I then did a clean install (Leopard) but after a few days -and after installing all the programmes I had before- the same again with kernel panics. I run the hardware test -the short one/2mins and the longer one- and everything appeared to be fine. I cleaned the cache and cookies with Onyx and still nothing. I run a software called preferential treatment and checked for system preferences problems. It found some and i deleted them. Of course I run disk utility and repaired permissions several times but again nothing. A guy from Apple told me to re-install Tiger and then upgrade to Leopard but I haven t done that.
Initially I was suspecting Time machine having a corrupted file that would cause the Kernel Panic but the again I should have the problems when I am entering time machine which is not the case.
It looks like that the Mac mini crashes when 5-7 applications are running. I used to work with many applications open but I never had this problem. Can it be a hardware problem?
The kernel panic report is as follows. Any help would be appreciated.

  • 1.42GHz Mac mini + Leopard = Recommended?

So I have a PPC Mac mini, 1.42GHz. I was wondering whether anyone had upgraded a similar configuartion to Leopard. Being a 17 year old student, I don't have the money at the moment to buy a new Mac (which I'll probably do before Uni anyway). I upgraded the mini to 1GB RAM a while ago after it was feeling a bit sluggish. Lately I have been noticing that Tiger is a bit slow. Like I usually have DVD player in the background whilst something is on and I'm browsing the web on Safari and checking my RSS in NNWLite.
Will I get a big performance hit upgrading to Leopard? Word takes a few minutes to load, and if I'm going to battle with more problems of slow loading programs, I'd rather not.
Safari crashes a lot for me I think, but then I tax it a lot whilst having at least 3 tabs open, and then clicking links from my RSS feeds.

I was quite looking forward to the transparent dock after some time looking at it in developers screenshots, but it really does feel out of place when you have it in front of you! None the less, that's just my opinion. (There is an optional freeware app you can download that will allow you to make the menu bar transparent if you wish - can't remember its name)
Core Image is basically a technology that Apple really boasted in Tiger, which took the strain off your cpu and used your graphics processor to manage everything visual and do it really well. Our mac mini's do still have that powerful capability with their own individual graphics processing chip, but the ATI 9200 didn't quite measure up to what Apple wanted at the time that they worked on the technology behind Core Image.
It's basically just for eye candy's sake (which we all crave!) such as the rippling effect when you drop a widget onto the dashboard. Our ATI 9200 chips don't display this because Apple didn't want to include them in the whole Core Image package.
It seems a bit silly really, because cover flow in the finder in leopard is absolutely smooth, no jumpiness like there is in iTunes. Technically speaking we should be able to to manage Core Image, but it's just one of those things! It barely makes any difference at the end of the day.

  • Microphone and RAM for 2005 model Mac MINI??

My sister has a Mac MINE from Dec 2005:
    Mac mini 1.42 512x1/ 80/
    S/N: YM54701** <Edited by Host>
Since she is not at all computer-minded (but loves her MINI)- and I want to surprise her with a few upgrades when I visit her next week, what can I order (via the Apple Website?) or purchase to upgrade here MINI?
    1. She wants to use SKYPE and has neither a microphone nor a videocamera for SKYPE. What is a good videocamera (with built-in Mic) that I can get? I have an iSight-- but I use it still so don't want to part with that!
    2. Is it easy to upgrade her RAM to at least 1 gb? If so how and where to buy the RAM etc. She lives near Chattanooga, TN and I'll be at an APPLE STORE in Chicago on 24 June---
    3. And not just for her MINI: What about FireWire adapter cables to be able to:
    A. Take a FireWire 400 peripheral like an iSight and plug it into FW800 on a computer that only has FW800 (like a new MB13)?
    B. Take a FW800 devise (like a Hard Drive) and plug it into a Mac with just a FW400 (like my MacBook from 2006)?
    Thanks for any replies here!
    Steve
    Saturday 20 June 2009

    Hello, Stephen Schulte2
    1. I don't have a mini, but use this separate mic with good results:
      http://store.apple.com/us/product/T6831LL/A
If you want a cable-free combined mic/webcam, Apple sells this BlueTooth model:
      http://store.apple.com/us/product/TV520VC/A
For Skype known compatibly, you can search Skype's Store for Mac-compatible webcams:
http://shop.skype.com/webcams/ - most seem not to have integrated microphones
      http://shop.skype.com/webcams/logitech-quickcam-communicate-deluxe.html has mic
    2. "Easy" is a subjective term. This magazine shows how and says "Not Hard, But Not Easy".
      http://www.macworld.com/article/42237/2005/01/macminiinside.html
You can even see video of it being done on this site:
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1UmuWdNSrk
Whether you want to try it or have a technician do it is your choice.
If you do it yourself, Crucial RAM has a good reputation with many Mac users:
      http://www.crucial.com/store/listmodel.aspx?pl=Mac%20mini&mfgr=Apple&cat=RAM
In my Macs, I usually use OWC RAM (and other expansion products.) The products I have bought from them are reliable and low-priced, and OWC offers as much support as you need:
      http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/mac-mini/
Whatever you decide to do, I strongly suggest that any RAM you buy has a lifetime warranty.
    3. A. You can use this cable that Apple sells:
      http://store.apple.com/us/product/TP320LL/A
If you like, you can buy it locally or directly from Belkin:
      http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=164598
    3. B. That cable is bi-directional, so it does not matter which end is FW 400 or 800.
However, an adapter that connects 6pin FW400 to 9pin FW800 may be more convenient. You have a choice of many, but here are a couple of examples from which you can choose:

  • Upgrade 2009 base line Mac Mini with aftermarket RAM and SSD!

    Hello people,
I'm looking to buy a 2009 Mac Mini (base line, 120GB hdd and 1GB of RAM) and was looking to upgrade it with aftermarket RAM (http://corsair.com/products/mac/default.aspx ) to 4GB (2x2GB) Corsair and with an Intel X25-M SSD, most probably an 80GB drive.
And now comes my question: Based on your experience do you know a better match of aftermarket memmory and SSDs with the Mac Mini?!
Also i've read that using an Intel SSD X-25M to hook up an Windows XP machine (either bootcamp or VM) is impossible since Windows XP doesn't recognize the SSD. Is this correct? (I need XP in VMware to access an old app that's windows based only, and NO wine sadly doesn't work).
    Thank you,
    Andrei

Well, the big drawback on the Minis is Intel integrated Graphics.
iMacs & Minis run far too hot  in my Opinion, Apple likely tested them in a 68° F. air conditioned room.
I myself would be looking into an older iMac, or Widows PC!

  • Mac mini Leopard  connects to Apple extreme BUT XP WONT CONNECT HELP PLEASE

*I have a new mac mini intel 1.83 ghz Core 2 Duo I used bootcamp to partition Windows XP pro SP2*
*I was initially easily able to connect to my wireless Apple extreme in either Leopord 10.5.4 or Windows XP.*
*I then installed all the new (100) security updates for SP2 and now Windows XP sees my airport extreme but for some reason can't connect. I set up the Wizard using a manual network key and using the same password for my network connection. When I startup in Leopard 10.5.4 no problems always connected to Airport extreme. But no connection on Windows XP to wirelessx Apple extreme.*
*I wonder if anyone has a solution, maybe a detailed explanation how to set up with the Windows XP network wizard?*
*Does the Apple AirPort Utility Setup 5.3.2 for windows help in any way?*
    *Thanks in advance!*

I have no idea what happened. I plugged in my USB flash drive in an attempt
to run the Apple Airport utility for windows to see if that would get me connected, but just as I plugged in the USB drive my wireless connection flashed and said CONNECTED and I've been good for the past 12 hours. I never had to use the Apple Airport utility.
I just wish I knew what happened in case I lose this connection and have to try & reconnect....I guess I could always try inserting a usb drive!

  • Can't connect to mac mini leopard shares or screen share

i'm having problem connecting to a mac mini that is on my network (running leopard 10.5.8) and is wired to the network via an AEBS.
previously when my MBP was also running 10.5.8 i had no problems using screen sharing and connecting to 2 shares on it using "afp://10.x.x.x/sharename", or browsing to them via finder.
i did a clean install of SL on the MBP and now even though the mac mini shows up in finder, when i select it it just sits there trying to connect and eventually the beach ball appears and fails saying it can't connect to it.
when i try to connect to the shares using command-K, again it won't connect to the shares.
if i try to connect to them using the samba share that is also configured on the mac min then is does connect to them.
i can ping the mac mini using network utility.
any ideas what the problem is? everything worked fine before i wiped and installed SL.

    HI,
Make sure screen sharing is turned on and you have set up sharing permissions on the computer whose screen you want to share.
    To set up screen sharing:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Sharing.
    Select the Screen Sharing checkbox.
To specify who can share your screen, select one of the following:
All users: Select this if you want to allow any user with a user account on your computer to share your screen.
Only these users: Select this if you want to restrict screen sharing to specific users.
Click Add + at the bottom of the Users list and select a user from Users & Groups (accounts you have set up in Accounts preferences), Network Users (users on your network), or your Address Book. Or click New Person and enter a name and password to create a sharing account. Then select that user from the list and click Select.
Click Computer Settings and set the following options:
Anyone may request permission to control screen: Select this to allow anyone on your network to request to share your screen.
VNC viewers may control screen with password: Select this and enter a password that VNC viewer applications can enter in order to control your screen.
It’s recommended that you not set a password if you only share this computer’s screen using the built-in screen sharing viewer in Mac OS X.

  • Q:  Mac mini - Leopard - partitions - safety ?

My husband is about to load Leopard onto his Mac Mini / Intel.
He would like to partition it so one partition can "surf the net",
and one partition will have our finances/personal data/private
    sorta stuff on it.
Are we right to assume that while on the Internet, no one can
"see" the other "private" partition? [We use Airport Extreme.]
    Thanks in advance!

I would certainly not be an advocate of ignoring the risk - quite the opposite - but I think it is useful to ensure the issue is viewed with some perspective, and an acknowledgement that even though the weakest link in the security of almost any system is the actual user, much can be done to secure systems from hacking (meaning unauthorized access as opposed to mistakenly downloading malware) that can reduce the risk of data loss to as close to zero as possible.
Part of the problem here is that even with an external hard drive, if that drive is running when you are 'hacked' your data is just as vulnerable as ever. As such, while it's certainly more secure to use an external, it is only so if it is off. A more thorough solution is to follow a few basic principles to secure the system against prying eyes in the first instance.
First is the realization that due to the architecture involved, MacOS (and particularly, the latest versions of it) is considerably more resilient to hacking than Windows. A hacker cannot simply take control of the OS and gain access to the system as a whole.
Even so, it is better to prevent a hacker from even finding your system in order to attempt access to it, and the first and most significant step is to add a hardware firewall with network address translation (NAT). While that sounds quite complex, it's actually a feature of almost every router, even those intended for domestic use. That way, the ISP's public IP is not assigned to the system but to the router, and private IPs are used 'inside' the network. Hackers might be able to discover the router, but finding systems behind it is then much harder. To obstruct those who manage to find your system even so, switching on the in-built software firewall in MacOS also helps (in Leopard is in the Firewall tab of the Security preference pane), and setting restrictions on which applications can then access the internet, along with restricting incoming connections adds limitations on what they can manage to do - at least without giving some indication to the user. On top of that, a good third-party firewall such as Little Snitch can add a degree of additional security, while still being very easy to set up and use.
Setting Safari not to automatically open safe files on downloading (in the general tab of Safari's preferences) will help avoid malware from gaining unobstructed access to the system, and using the freeware ClamXav set to monitor email, document and download folders, along with any others that are sensitive to the individual will help protect against the potential for future malware.
It's also possible to do things with folders and user accounts that help hide data. http://www.tuaw.com/2007/09/17/secure-your-mac-crouching-user-hidden-folder/ for example gives a couple of good starting points that would help keep data away from prying eyes.
