Base Station confusion...

Hello there,
I've recently moved flat and have just been set up with a new ISP account... We (my girlfriend and I) have a G5 and a G4 powerbook connected to an Airport Extreme basestation (Firmware v5.6) both computers are on os10.4.7...
After waiting for a month to be connected (technical problems at ISP), we were connected, for one day... then my girlfriend decided to fiddle with the settings... and now everything is lost... I've tried resetting things, I've called tech support and been on the phone for ages to people... what little hair i have is now nearly all gone through relentless pulling...
I just need a little help... could someone point me in the direction of an idiots guide to setting up a base station? i get confused when i go into Airport setup assistant, and the Utilities manager software and the System Preferences>Network etc... all the TCP/IP things and the IP addresses etc... I called apple and they want £35 to tell me what i'm sure must exist on these forums somewhere...
I just want a basic set-up... one D-link ADSL modem, connected via ethernet cable to one Airport Extreme, with 2 computers having acces to the net...
I'd appreciate any help, or just being told where to look... before a start blaming my girlfriend for everything...
thanks.

After reading and setting up the base station I've just had continuous problems, mainly regarding to the modem and router giving out conflicting IP addresses etc. I've been on the phone to every tech support person from Apple, my ISP and the modem manufacturer.
The result has been a dead end, and frustration, mainly from Apple who won't tell me everything i need to know unless i pay £35.
As a regular poster of tech support on the final cut forums, i resent this, so in just this case, Apple can kiss my behind.
I've just purchased a new Netgear modem/router and it works like a dream.

  • Confused: Wireless router V's base station

    I have a g5 imac.
I want to make my broadband connection wireless.
I would also like to share my broadbad connection with another mac (which already has an airport extreme card)
My understanding is that I will need to
    1. buy an airport extreme card for my mac (it doesnt have one)
    2. Buy either a wireless router or a base station. (my current broadband connection is USB and my ISP does not supply ethernet modems)
    Firstly.. is this correct?
    secondly, which is better?
    Im just so confused.

Apple's Airport Base Station is a wireless router. They're a little pricey, but have a lot of features and are supposedly easy to set up.
Some features it has that cheaper ones may not:
    Supports 50 connections
USB port (for sharing a printer)
    Built-in 56k modem
    External antenna connector
    Wireless bridging
If you don't need any of those things, then you're probably better off getting a wireless router of another brand.
The Base Station connects via ethernet, so if you need USB, then you'd need another brand, or some kind of adapter. I'd look into getting your internet connection over ethernet though.

  • Confusion about using non-Apple prod. on my powerbook with AE base station

I have a G5 and an base station. Always worked fine.
Then I wanted to add a USB wireless "card" to my powerbook 12 inch G4. The salesman said they are not well supported by Apple. So i found an IO DATA Ethernet Converter WN-G54/C which promises MAc compatibility.
Problem is the instruction book is Japanese only and I see no Eng one on the net. Probablty not released yet.
On the other hand, assume these all must work sort of the same.
Cannot get it to work, though it seems to recognize something.
Just to make sure..can I NOT connect to my Aiport base station with a mac connected via a product like this ethernet converter, which seems to allow such connections?
And do I just igore the IO data settings and try to configure it through the Airport application? It seems the airport connection is for apple cards to connect to apple or non apple networks.
But here i think I have to use the IO data ethernet converter application to connect to the apple or other networks?
Anyway, I JUST realized my Powerbook has an Apple airport card in it, as i tried to turn it on even without the IO data in,s o this is a mute point for now.
but if i ever need the IO data (it seems it may have a stronger ability to pull in the signal as it has a big antenna on it), i would like to undersatnd how it works.
    Thanks!

No-one has any idea about this?

  • Extreme Base Station suddenly dropping internet connection

I have an Extreme Base Station (802.11n Fast Ethernet) which has been providing wireless internet and printing to two imacs pretty flawlessly for several years. It seems to be a fairly simple network. DSL modem (to WAN port) and USB printer cable plugged into back of Base Station.
Several days ago, the Base Station began dropping connection to the internet every few minutes. If I connect the modem directly into the computer, I have no problems with losing connection. So, I began looking for solutions online and have been trying everything I could find to do. I've scoured the forums here, and everywhere and read a bazillion posts.
I've done a hard reset of the Base Station, I've tried different channels, I've unplugged, waited ten minutes, and replugged in a myriad of sequences, including unplugging both the modem (Zhone/Paradyne 6381-A3) and Base Station overnight. The only thing I haven't done is roll back the firmware (currently 7.4.2 I believe). I'm still experiencing the same problems and am at my wits end. I've spent hours now trying to fix it and need to do other things like shop for groceries and vacuum! So, I'm posting, in hopes someone might be able to point me in a more productive direction.
Is it possible the Base Station hardware is failing? What are the signs and symptoms? I hate to spend another $179 and still have the same problems.
    Thank you.
    Most kindly,
    ---Susan

    Dear Bluenova - ( +or other interested readers+ )
I know that this reply is two months since this topic was initially posted.
This is a longstanding Airport Extreme ( AEBS ) problem that's been noted since 2006-2007.
It has been an ongoing issue for me -AND- I continue to experience it even after recently upgrading my AEBS.
I finally called AppleCare in mid-Sept. and opened a formal problem case report.
As of today (Oct 15, 2010) I still have an open & unresolved case with AppleCare.
The problem has been escalated twice -and- is now referred to Engineering Dept for research & resolution.
I was curious what steps or actions you have taken -and/or- if you still experience the problem.
    _Readers Please Note_

  • I want to set up my Airport Express Base Station again but do not remember how. Please walk me thru it.

I am trying to hook my Airport Express Base Station up to be a router again and have forgotten how to do this. Before I had it hooked through the modeum and would like to have it that way again but for some reason the process has completely left my memory. I know it has something to do with the little icon on the top of the computer but not what it has to do with it. Because it is not hooked up I am unable to get my printer to work unless I connect to another wireless that I have but do not want to use all of the time since I have to pay for it and do not have  many GB. I am also paying for another that I want to use all of the time (unless necessary to use the other) so It only cost me when I am away from home. Please walk me through the process of hooking the Apple router back up.

All apple routers are setup via Airport Utility.. there is no icon for it in the top menu area.. I think you are confusing the airport network setup (ie the internal wireless card in the Mac) with the airport express setup.. Apple insist on calling everything the same name which makes it more confusing.
Open the airport utility which you find under applications/utilties.
Router setting will depend on what version of the utility you are using.
In version 5 it is under Internet tab and in v6 utility under network. You need to set it to DHCP + NAT.
Download and read the manual for setting up the express if you have forgotten the details.. manuals are always good.. all the manuals are listed at the head of the section. But you are in Time Capsule instead of extreme/express specific area.
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/wireless/airport
    Manuals link http://support.apple.com/manuals/%23airport
If you want the express as router the modem should be bridged or it should be a pure modem for it to work without Double NAT issues. There is nothing wrong with bridging the Express.. that is not the same as using it in wireless bridge modes.. that is router bridge.
    What modem do you have?
I am at a loss to understand the rest.. why the printer is not part of your own network.. and how setting up the airport this way is important. You need to give us specific details if you need more help.
How exactly is the airport setup now?
How do you connect to the modem?
How is the printer connected? What kind of printer?

  • Can't create a working Wireless Network using Airport Extreme Base Station

    I don't know what I'm doing wrong...
I've got the cable from the modem going to the base station. I follow ALL on screen instructions. I select "Using DHCP" because when I plug the ethernet cable into my MBP it automatically does everything for me, and has that as its setting as well.
I get to the stage where it asks whether or not I'd like it to share an IP or go into bridge mode, I'm not sure what either of these two mean...I've tried both and both result in no wireless internet.
On several occasions I get to the end, and after I do the "final" update is comes back with one problem - internet connection, saying the router doesn't have a valid IP.
I'm totally lost on what to do here...
If you need more information just ask...please...

The below procedure is described in your AirPort setup manual, but it can be a little confusing. Here is my step-by-step procedure for an AEB setup for the system you describe:
    A. Setup the 'Main' Base Station:
    1. Do a factory reset of your AEB (main), then turnoff the DSL Modem and the AEB (main).
    2. Check ethernet cable connections:
    - DSL Modem > AEB (main) WAN port;
    - AEB (main) > Mac computer running OS X 10.5.x.
    3. Power-on DSL Modem and wait for it to initialise.
    4. Power-on the AEB (main) and start your Mac computer.
    5. Open AirPort Utility and select the AEB (main) in the LH pane. Click 'Continue' and give the AEB (main) a name and an admin password (twice). Click 'Continue'.
    6. Select 'I don't have a wireless network and I want to create one', click Continue.
    7. Give your network a name, select WPA/WPA2 Personal and insert the wireless network password (twice) - use 13 alpha/numeric characters for password. Tick 'Remember this password in my keychain'. Click 'Continue'.
    8. Select 'I connect to the Internet with a DSL or cable modem using DHCP. Click 'Continue'.
    9. Click 'Update' and wait for the AEB (main) to restart.
    10. Disconnect the ethernet cable between your Mac and the AEB (main).
    B. Setup Client computer
    1. Open System Preferences/Network/AirPort.
    2. Against 'Network Name:' select your network (the name you gave it at A7).
    3. Click 'Advanced' and select TCP/IP. Against 'Configure IPv4:' select 'Using DHCP', then click 'OK'.
    4. Click 'Apply' and exit System Preferences.

  • IMac doesn't detect the base station correctly (with new base station)

I have a brand new Airport Express. I'm trying to connect to my iMac G5. Everything works fine in the start up with getting the green light on the Express base station. But, my iMac doesn't "connect" with the base station.
I try the "Airport Setup Assistant" and get a window that says "No new Airport networks were found."
I look at the "pie" at the top of the iMac screen. It has the white and black stripes on it. I click it and find "Apple Network e3fec9" and select it. The signal level shown has all blue buttons. That window also reports "Status: Connected to 'Apple Network e3fec9'" and "Base Station ID:00:19:E3:E3:FE:C9". That's what makes me think that my problem must be in the iMac and not the base station.
I had also tried my Dell laptop (from work) and found that it found the internet network. It detected the "local host" and "Apple Network" and the signal strength was very good (~90% or so). The only problem was that the laptop thought it needed to recreate an IP address before it could connect to the internet. I didn't do that, since I saw it was detecting the network.
Please help. Why should this be so hard?
iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   none

I'm confused. You say you're connected to "Apple Network e3fec9", and you're having trouble connecting your iMac? It sounds like you've managed to connect to your Airport Base Station.
Have you configured the Internet settings for the base station? Try this:
    1. Launch Airport Admin Utility (in /Applications/Utilities/) select "Apple Network e3fec9" and click Configure.
    2. Under the Airport tab, give the base station a name, click the Base Station Options… button, and make sure Enable Ethernet Port is checked.
    3. Select Create a Wireless Network (Home Router) if it isn't already selected, give your network a name, and check Create a closed network
4.Click the Wireless Security button and set it to WPA Personal, and enter a password.
    5. Under the Internet tab, set Connect Using: to Ethernet, and in the Configure dropdown, select Using DHCP
    6. Click the Access Control tab and click the plus button on the right side of the window. In the panel that pops up, click the This Computer button.
    7. Click Update
I'm hoping it's something simple, like Enable Ethernet Port wasn't checked or something, and not something more serious.
    Hope it helps.

  • Mountain Lion/Mavericks 'breaks' wifi base station - Snow Leopard works fine

    Greetings all,
(Tried this in the OSx forum with no answers, so I figured I'd try the MacMini community and this one.)
I've been reading my way toward blindness through countless threads, here and elsewhere, from countless people, having problem with Mountain Lion and Wi-Fi these last few days, but some are using Airport, some are using third-party Wi-Fi routers, some aren't really specifying what they're using, so I thought I'd be as specific as possible about my situation - and add the fact that everything is still working fine if I boot into a cloned backup using Snow Leopard.
    ===
So here's the situation. I have a Intel Mac Mini which I use as a Wi-Fi base station for a Intel PowerBook Pro and an iPod 5. The Mini has been running Snow Leopard, and the PowerBook had been upgraded to Mountain Lion a few months ago. Things were still working fine at that point - the PowerBook's shift from SL to ML didn't affect its connectivity as a 'receiver' at all. About a week ago however, I finally upgraded the Mini to Mountain Lion as well (so that I could install the current version of Adobe Lightroom) and lost my Wi-Fi Internet access.
When I turn Wi-Fi on at the PowerBook, the Mini's network is visible, and I get the solid Wi-Fi fan showing a full connection, but I cannot access the Internet (indicated by the exclaimation point inside the fan for the first few seconds). The same is true on the iPod - I get the checkmark showing that I'm connected, but when I try to access any Internet services will get a pop-up box telling me that the Internet is not connected.
After going through pages and pages and pages of people struggling with similar issues on sites like this, and following suggestions like deleting my preference files, repairing permissions, zapping PRAM, creating new locations, changing IP addresses etc. I got no further. But since I had cloned my hard drive just before the upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion (thank you SuperDuper), I can reboot into Snow Leopard, and everything still works fine. With that advantage, I copied and re-created EVERY SINGLE preference in the system preferences for Network and Internet sharing* from the Snow Leopard into the Mountain Lion system. (I even went so far as to create a network in Mountain Lion's prefs. with WEP encryption instead of the newer WPA just in case that would make any difference at all.) But even with identical settings on the Mini regardless of booting into Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion, Mountain Lion remains the same - no problem connecting with the network, but complete inability to access the Internet. A few days ago, hoping against hope that an upgrade to Mavericks might reset things into some sort of working mode, I tried that - but no better result.
(*) I note that the wifi heading in the preference panes has changed from "AirPort" in Snow Leopard to "WiFI" in Mountain Lion and Mavericks, but I'm assuming that's just a change Apple made in its terminology to avoid confusion with the external AirPort options.
I would appreciate any suggestions any of you could give. And I would ask that you specify whether any suggested changes are to be made on the originating Wi-Fi station (in this case the Mini), or the receiver (in this case the MacBook). Many of the threads I've read to date can be confusing simply because they're not specifying on which machine any suggested changes need to be made, and while I'm sure there's nothing that needs to be changed at the MacBook, please specify if I'm wrong.
    Thanks again,

  • Two airport base stations?

I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to use TWO airport base stations - in order to boost the coverage of the airport network at my home.
I've got some outdoor speakers set up - and they lose signal (as does my iPhone) - and so I'm trying to optimize the overall network.
I'm considering getting another Airport base - and wiring it in to the network - and positioning it on the other side of my home (near the oustide) - so I can improve the signal.
Can TWO base stations be set up on the same network? What settings do I choose?
    Thanks,
    Vic

Of course there is a way to utilize two airports within the same network..
    In the most simple form:
    1) Use the same SSID (network name) for both.
    2) Assuming you are using one as a router (share an IP, etc), set the second one in bridge mode.
2A) If you have another device as the router, set both to bridge mode, do not have both do NAT as it is very confusing and hard to get to work right.
    3) Choose channel 1 for one side and channel 11 for the other.. Channel 6 is also a channel you can use but the wider between channels the better. Do not use the same channel for both or even consecutive channels as they overlap.
I think that should do it.. In general, this is not a problem.. You would want to have the two airports physically separated from each other (opposite side of the house for example).
    Good luck.

  • AirPort Base Station

I am about to set up a network in a new home. I am confused by the AirPort Base Station/Extreme: do these replace the need for a router, and if not, what is the benfit of these above a standard wireless router like a NetGear for example?

The AirPort Extreme is a wireless router.
But, the Extreme does not have a modem on board, so you will need a separate modem if you want to be able to access the Internet.
You don't mention a model number regarding Netgear, but some manufacturers offer a product that is a combination modem and router in one package. This type of product is more correctly called a a gateway, but many users refer to a gateway as a modem, so things can get confusing.
The bottom line....if you are considering an AirPort Extreme or other Apple router, you will need a separate modem if you want to be able to access the Internet. Most Internet Service Providers supply a modem.....often free of charge....with their service.

  • MacBook problems with Snow base station - other laptops work fine

    Hi,
I just purchased a new MacBook to replace an iBook G4 800.
My snow base station works fine with the old iBook G4 (which has an extreme card) and with a borrowed PowerBook G4 Aluminum 1.5 GHz (also extreme card) but will not work with my new Mac Book. Every time I try to connect - I receive an error "There has been an error accessing "my name" 's network. Sometimes it will connect, other times (most of the time), it will not.
My MacBook connects fine to my neighbors Linksys access points and our work Lucent access points (which are b also - snow is b).
I did a search and am reading other people having similiar problems. I was wondering if anyone has resolved their problems. I spent 2 plus hours on the phone with Apple yesterday. They are placing the blame on the older base station (snow) but it is obvious that snow is working fine for other computers.
    Theresa

I am still a little confused. I can be 2 feet from my base station and will keep hitting "try again" when trying to access my network and will get "an error has occurred" many times and eventually it will connect and I will have an incredibly strong signal. My MacBook will continue to have a great strong signal until it goes to sleep and then I will have a difficult time connecting again. My neighbors base station is a weak signal and I can easily join their network. Every time I connect, I have problems but once connected, it is great.
I guess it can be interference but I am now wondering if it is related to the snow/graphite base station only. This laptop has no problems joining other b base stations.
I spent hours on the phone with an Apple wireless support specialist the other night. He wants me to try an Extreme base station. He didn't indicate that he was aware of any MacBook problems (and he mentioned interference and we setup my laptop to only join my network and it didn't make a difference).
More to come.... IF anyone switched to a Extreme Base Station and that worked fine - please let me know. Though I sort of resent having a functional b base station that works with every other laptop and have to spend $200 towards another base station because of a new laptop.

  • Option for base station: Create or Extend?

    Hi,
I have an Airport 6 set up as wireless base station.  Works as expected.  I have an Airport 5 set up as a Router mode off(bridge mode),  using wan port (*).  Green lights both on.  Wireless network operational.     There is an option in the settings wifi section when accessing the base station.   Two choices:  Create a wifi network.  Second choice  Extend a wifi network.   I have the first option checked (create a wifi network).   Or should the second choice be selected   option(extend an network(?
Both units are now located in my office next to the comcast surfboard modem.   I need to install a cat 6 ethernet cable to a remote location.   Because of the locations of both Airports I have no way of knowing how the Airport5 is working.    Is a cat 6 necessary or will an available cat 5 be sufficient?   A 50 foot cat5 yields 98Mbs download 18 mbs upload on a Toshiba using 00KLA.  My new cable will be 100 foot.

My Airport 6.1 can't manage my base station. I need to use AirPort Utility 5.6 but i can't find the right download. I've been downloading several but it always after havingf instal the first 3 steps the same message: Airport utility....can't be installed... The version of OS X on this version
    doesn't support this base station...
I need help please to find the correcte download so i can my wii-fii work as soon as possible (because my wife is making me crazy, she can't go on Facebook!!!! )
    Thank's for your help,
    Mike

Use AirPort Utility 5.6 which contains the features you need. It is compatible with Lion as well as Mountain Lion, however, the installer app will refuse to install it on Mountain Lion.
This dilemma is easily solved though. You simply need to extract the app from the installer package using a package extractor like Pacifist.
    Download Pacifist here: http://www.charlessoft.com/
Download AirPort Utility 5.6 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
If you happen to have an archived copy of the AU 5.6 app somewhere, such as a Time Machine backup or equivalent, you can simply restore it or drag the app to your Mountain Lion system's Utilities folder. It will run without complaint. It is only the package installer that is the problem.
Mountain Lion will not allow you to delete its existing version of AirPort Utility. Just ignore it. It and the older version (which will bear the unique name "AirPort Utility 5.6") can peacefully coexist.
Note: For those with Leopard or Snow Leopard systems you need AirPort Utility 5.6.1 (this is confusing - a later AirPort Utility version for an earlier OS X version - but it is correct).
Download AirPort Utility 5.6.1 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1536

  • "AirPort Utility unable to find any AirPort base stations"

I am getting it, along with a blanked out options panel even as I am using the two AirPort base stations and the Airport Extreme that are installed in my house. This confuses me.
I get it on my 12" Powerbook with 10.5.2 installed, but not on the one that's still running Panther. I do not get it on the iMac running Panther.
So does anybody have any idea why my "updated" PB can't see the network it's using? I have had Bonjour and Rendezvous issues in 10.5.2, too, so I am guessing these are all related somehow.
I have not installed the most recent AirPort Utility because I am afraid it will throw me offline altogether. (Should I?)
    All advice welcome.

I have the same problem. Two newer macbooks work just fine but an older powerbook that was running fine on the airport extreme now say no airport card installed. Any ideas for a fix?

  • Hp photosmart C6150 invalid WPA passphrase with new airport base station

Okay, I had the old flying saucer type base station that worked great wirelessly with my HP all in one C6150 printer. I upgraded to the new square base station and printer still worked fine. Then about a week ago, my printer can no longer find the network. I unplugged it for some time, been using the USB cable for now and can now find the network in the selection list on the printer. The problem is, I keep receiving the error "invalid WPA passphrase" even though it is the correct one. I have tried changing the passwork on the base station, my computers can find it and work great, but the printer doesn't want to accept the passphrase no matter what I try between 8 and 64 digits (mine is 13 digits). I am about ready to chuck everything out the window. I ran updates on the base station and possibly my computer at some point after the initial hookup of the base station. So perhaps the update affected my ability to connect?
My dad recently visited with his newer macbookpro (I have a powerbook g4 running 10.4.11) and his did not connect to my network even while mine was (at that time). So it leads me to think something in an update mucked it all up but would LOVE to know if anyone else has had this happen and how to fix it!

Ok. I found a solution that works for me. Taking one of the poster's cue about the installer's confusion over an the presence of both an Airport Extreme and Airport Express(es), I unplugged my AP Expresses such that the installer only saw one access point, the AP Extreme. This time the installer was able to complete the wireless installation.
I then plugged my AP Expresses back in and found that the printer has no problem with them.
Apparently, it's the installer that can't handle the multiple access points, not the printer.
    Anyway, it worked for me.
