Base station needs restarting regularly to get connection to internet again

Hi,
I've reverted to 5.5.1 firmware on my white round b/g extreme base station with internal modem in the hope it'd make restarting the base station on a regular basis not necessary, but it hasn't.
ethernet modem > base station > g3 powerbook
I think I've got it set up in a pretty standard way. Why do I need to keep restarting it? It seems to kind of grind to a halt, get, possibly slower and slower I think rather than suddenly stop working.
Any ideas?
Cheers,
John.

Sounds to me like a DHCP distribution conflict, but hopefully somebody more knowledgeable than me will take another look now that I've bumped you to the top!
(Dig for DHCP conflicts, see what you can find out)

Your existing Extreme might already be configured in Bridge Mode. As long as the Extreme is working now, do not change any settings on the Extreme.
Apple incorrectly assumes that all users are connecting to a simple modem when most users are connecting to gateway devices....combination modem/routers.
You probably are as well and Bridge Mode would be the correct setting when connecting to that type of device.

  • "Airport was unable to find your base station after restarting"

Trying to connect AX to my HP printer for wireless printing. Walk through the process of joining my wireless network, everything appears to work (finds my base station, finds my wireless network). When I finish the final step, macbook appears to hang but then comes back with this error message "Airport was unable to find your base station after restarting"..."problem rejoining the wireless network or finding the base station". I then go into Airport Utility again and base station is gone. I have to reset AX to factory setting (removing any profiles) before Utility recognizes AX again. I repeat process...same results, ugh. Any help would be appreciated.

I updated to 7.3.1, and just wasted 3 hours getting my Airport Express working again. What a nightmare.
Flashing amber light after update to 7.3.1 and not found by Airport Utility. Hard reset allows Airport Utility to find it, but after configuration never found again and get flashing amber light, until hard reset again...
Here are the steps that worked for me to get back to 7.3. and functional Airport Express.
    1) I had ethernet connected, I was unclear whether ethernet doing anything but desperate. Performing reset from MacBook with airport on.
    2) Hard reset on Airport Express so that Airport Utility can find it. (i.e. press reset button for 5-10 seconds until light flashes amber 4 times. The factory reset did not seem to work.)
    3) Cross fingers that Airport Express shows up in Airport Utility. (Did most times for me, but not always.)
    4) Hold down Option key and select Check for Updates from Airport Utility application menu. This allows selecting old updates.
    5) Download 7.3.
    6) Click Manual Setup (for the Airport Express)
    7) Select Upload Firmware from the Base Station menu
    8) Select 7.3, apply, cross fingers
After applying 7.3 may need to do one more hard reset, I am not sure if it showed up again on its own. However, once available in Airport Utility and once again with the 7.3 firmware, was able to configure and get working again as normal.

  • Cant find base station after restarting... now what?

i just got the airport express today and and i have been trying to set it up for the past like 6 hours... at first nothing woudl work and i coudlnt get it to even start working however finally i was abl to get it to do the installation and get everything done however at the end when its ready updating everything a message pops up says " Airport Utility unable to find your base station after restarting.... blah blah blah" HOW DO I FIX THIS... please help .. thank you :]

The first basic troubleshooting procedure is to power cycle the entire network. If you have not already done this, now would be a good time.
Power off every device on the network in any order you want
    Wait a few minutes
Start the 2Wire gateway first, and let it run for a full minute by itself
Start the AirPort Extreme next the same way
Keep starting devices one at a time a minute apart until everything is powered back up
    Check the network
If you have already tried this a few times, please post back to let us know what other troubleshooting steps that you have performed, so we don't waste your time by asking you to do things that you have already done.

Apple told developers they were removing that service over two years ago. The developers that depended upon it should have done something about it.
Why did they remove it? My guess is because it was pretty crappy, was difficult to maintain, and wasn't a good solution for multiple devices that could get the info without tethering to a "base" Mac.

Try turning WiFi off on the iPad, then reset it again, turn WiFi on again and join your network again if necessary. Or go to Settings>WiFi>Your network name>Forget this network. Reset your iPad and then join your network again. Or - settings>General>Reset>Reset network settings. Reset the iPad, then try to join your network again.

  • Airport base station does NOT deliver a solid connection!

I have an older Airport base station (an extreme-square, flat, white, you know the one). Ever since I installed the most recent firmware update I get next to no data flow through from the provider. If I connect direct to the provider router via ethernet cable I get amazing connectivity speeds. I change the set up to connect via the Airport and I get either no connection or 5 KBS.... a speed, when it available is a joke. While trying to run through the Airport my Airport signal is full strength. It appears the base station does not know how to digest and dispense the information from the service provider into a full band of connectivity. The problem exists with both Apple laptops in the house. I have done all the required resets and restarts and to no avail. Connecting direct, which is a HUGE hassle, provides amazing speeds. I had none of these issues before I did the firmware update about three days ago (about 12.18.09). Any thoughts or directions to help me out?
    Thanks!

Your Express requires an IP address to be issued by the device connected to its WAN port, in most cases that is a cable modem.
Power down your modem and let it rest. Leave it powered down, connect it to your AirPort Express, then power it back up again. This permits the modem to supply the Express the IP address it needs.
Like it says, if you still can’t connect, contact your Internet service provider.

  • Port forwarding causes base station to restart

    Hi guys
I have purchased an AirPort Extreme Wireless Base Station. Besides its good looks and everything I have run into a little irritation.
When I want to forward a port to my local IP and clicks update the router automatically restarts. I can remember when I had my Linksys router it just updated the port scheme without restarting. Is it really true that it isn't the case with the AirPort Extreme?

    Hello there,
can you explain me how do you made Port Forwarding on the AirMac Extreme? I need to do it to connect my SlingBox (www.slingbox.com) to the AirMac to watch TV outside my Home. I can watch wireless in my Home but I get an error about PortForwarding to be connected to the Internet for outside viewing.
I have to PortForwarding only the Airmac or also the ADSL Modem I have connected to the Airmac?
    Thank You

  • Airport Express Base Station and HP Laserjet 1020 printer connected

    Dear all,
I have a Laptop (PC) Sony Vaio PCG-Z1XSP and an Airport Express Base Station which work perfectly together (internet access and I-tunes). I recently bought a printer HP Laserjet 1020 and connected it to the Airport Express USB soket. I managed to make it work and print a couple of times, but as soon as I turn off the printer or the computer or Airport Express, the next time I want to print, it doesn't work anymore.
The Airport Admin Utility recognises the printer (I can see it listed). I have updated the Airport Express software to the Firmware version 6.3 as well as downloaded the latest driver available on HP's website for my printer. I've also substituted the USB cable. Can anybody help me here? Thank you very much and best regards.

    Hallo everybody,
Thanks for all the answers. I have contacted HP's chat online and gone through the problem with 3 different technicians. I've tried a lot myself too. The issue was partially solved by restarting the printer spooler, i.e. stop, then start and then restart it.
However after I was so happy that the printer worked, I turn off everything. When I turn on again, it was not working anymore. Then I tried to see by exclusion what the problem is, I had to restart the Hardwar I don't know how many times.
    Conclusion:
    1. The USB cable must be plugged into the airport express before turning on anything.
    2. Turn on the printer first.
    3. Turn on the airport express and the computer.
    4. If you try to print it doesn't work, even if you reset the airport express through the airport express utility software. The printer is recognized and appears in it though.
    5. Disconnect the USB cable from the airport express and connect it to the PC directly.
    6. Print a document.
    7. Disconnect the cable and reconnect it to the airport express.
    8. Now you should be able to print wireless. You may need to reset the airport expresst with the utility softwar, but I managed to print without having to do it.
    9. The pörinter works even if you turn off and on again the computer, or you suspend the windows session and restart it, or if you put it in standby and restart it.
    10. The printer works even if you turn off the airport express and the computer, or the airport express alone and restart them/it.
    11. The printer doens't work anymore if you turn it off and onn again. In such a case you have to plug in/out as discribeb above.
Solution: Leave the printer always on, or make the plug in/out every morning when you start the computer and print one page direclty before being able to print wireless.
Does anybody have a solution to this problem? I mean it prints, but it is annoying to plug in/out every day, no?
HP's technician says that it is not a recommanded solution the HP Laserjet 1020 with the airport express, since the printer works on a host based server basis... I mean it is easy to say that, but one expects to buy a printer that works always and not to have to plug in/out everyday, restart spooler and so on.
Can anybody comment or suggest anything I can do to avoid this? Thank you and I hope this helps others too.

  • Airport admin can see Base Station, but only via direct ethernet connection

After resetting my snow (dual ethernet) base station, everything went well with the Airport Admin Utility reconfiguration. But after unplugging the ethernet cable between my computer and the base station, I'm not able to detect the base station wirelessly. Searching for "other" networks won't work. I've tried changing passwords, base station names, location names, network names, using the hex password. I hope I'm missing something obvious. Thanks in advance for any help!

Yes, the wireless network name (currently Apple Network xxxxxx), does not appear in the list. My iBook and Snow Leopard iMac cannot detect it, nor can two iPod Touches in the house. Nor can our Wii. All of which used to before all this. All these are able to detect other networks -- basically, all of my neighbors and then some that come and go.
I have not tried bringing the base station to another building. That’s a good idea.
I have tried http://support.apple.com/kb/TA20683 and kept getting stuck at the configuration stage -- where it seems to reset the ABS, but after which the ABS does not appear in the Admin Utility window. Finally, after many, many attempts at a hard reset, I’m almost positive the whole config & software upload took. My only evidence is that with the ABS still connected to my iBook (OS X 14.11 running Admin Utility 4.25) I can finally double click on “Base Station” and see lots of setting options, the correct Apple Airport ID, etc. In other words, as you guessed, I can see “(and, presumably, change) the wireless network name in the AirPort tab of AirPort Admin Utility (the default is something like "Apple Network xxxxxx") when connected via Ethernet.”
What led to this? It all started when I was trying to get our Wii on to our wireless network. But the Wii wouldn’t log on. It gets foggy after that (I’ve tried so many things, I’ve lost track of the initial steps creating the problem). I might have tried changing channels or something from my Snow Leopard computer, having forgotten that my Snow Leopard computer can’t administer my dual ethernet ABS. It’s possible it really started with turning on and off my DSL modem, which forced me to reset my DSL password with ATT.
Come to think of it, that might have been how this all started. After turning my DSL modem on again, ATT wanted me to download special software for me to reset my password. That wasn’t working (whatever it was would never load. But, I found a way to do it online. Otherwise, my browser kept spitting me back to ATTs password creation page.) By the time I went to my iBook to get into my ABS, remembering that was how I needed to tinker with it, to get back to the original Wii issue, I had lost all connections to my ABS.
Until now, where I can at least see the ABS again in the Airport Admin Utility -- via ethernet connection only.

  • AirPort Express base station needs frequent power-cycling

Hi, I've got an AirPort Express base station, roughly three years old at this point. Every so often I can't connect to the internet --- not wirelessly from my laptop, nor from the desktop that is cabled to the base station. The solution is to power-cycle the base station. Other, less drastic attempts to restore my internet connection never work.
This used to happen just every once in a while, but it's been increasing in frequency --- to the point where it happens almost every day now.
Anyone know what's going on? Time to take it in for service, or maybe time to buy a new one?

Thanks for the clarification. This will make troubleshooting somewhat easier.
Suggest that you pick a time when you can turn the wireless off on the AirPort Extreme for a few days. Keep as many things as possible connected using ethernet cables. If you find that you do not have to restart the AirPort Extreme daily as you do now, that's a pretty strong indication that the problems are being caused by wireless interference of some sort.
Remember that devices connected using ethernet and devices that are connected using wireless are all still on the same network. So, if the wireless is picking up stray interference, it can certainly affect other devices on the network, including loss of your Internet connection.
If you find that you still need to restart the AirPort Extreme with wireless turned off during your "test", then that narrows the possible issues down to several things:
o The modem is experiencing intermittent problems
o The AirPort Extreme is experiencing intermittent problems
Assuming that you know you have good ethernet cables, you can plug a computer directly into the modem for a day or two and keep tabs on things. If you continue to experience a connection loss, the modem is likely acting up.
If you have no problems connecting directly to the modem, then it's time to take the Airport Extreme to an Apple store to let them have a look and perform some diagnostics. If it's an intermittent problem, it will be hard to find, as the product will likely perform perfectly during the tests.

  • Airport base station needed?

I just bought an Airport express. Do I actually need an Airport Extreme base station to extend my network or can I do that with the router that I currently have? Based on my experiences thus far I'm thinking that I must have the base station. Thanks to anyone willing to help.

In most cases, you can configure the AirPort Express to join your existing wireless network so you won't have to switch networks to listen to AirTunes. This is sometimes a bit tricky and it may take a few tries.
    Here's how to do it:
Move the Express near your computer and temporarily, connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the AirPort Express. After you have it configured, you can remove the cable and move the Express back to the desired location.
Open Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Wireless Mode should be set to "Join a wireless network". If you don't see this choice, hold down the "option" key on your computer while you click on the selection box
Wireless Network Name...your Netgear wireless network name should appear as a choice to join. Click to select your Netgear wireless network name
Wireless Security....must be the exact same security setting that your Netgear network is using
Wireless Password....must be the exact same setting that your Netgear network is using
Click Update to save your changes. Close AirPort Utility. The Express will restart in 15-20 seconds. Now you can move the Express back to the location that you want.
