Bash: wrapping long command line [SOLVED]

I'm trying to configure my bash to wrap long command lines.  I am looking for a behaviour similar to tcsh where, at the border of the window,  the command is continued on the next line.  In bash, the command continues at the begining of the same lines wich is messy.  I tried using
set horizontal-scroll-mode on
in my ~/.inputrc but the continuation doesn't start at the windows border. I can post screenshots if that would help.
Thanks.

putting the line in .bashrc have no effect.
Here is my .bashrc
export EDITOR=emacs
export PAGER=less
export LESS="-f -r"
export BROWSER=firefox
PS1='[33[01;34m]#[33[00m] 33[01;31m]u@H[33[00m]33[01;39m] w $33[00m] '
# create an xauth key for root user
umask 377
/usr/X11R6/bin/xauth extract /tmp/user.xauth $DISPLAY
umask 022
#set horizontal-scroll-mode on
source ~/.aliases
my .bash_profile
. $HOME/.bashrc
my .inputrc
"e[A": history-search-backward
"e[B": history-search-forward
set show-all-if-ambiguous on
set page-completions off
set completion-query-items 10000
set horizontal-scroll-mode on
The screenshots:
With tsch (what I'm looking for)
With set horizontal-scroll-mode off:
If I continue to press the 'a' key, it overwrite the whole line and wraps at the window border.
With set horizontal-scroll-mode on:
It wraps 2 inches before reaching the window border.

  • Apps with long command lines

    All,
    I have an application which has quite a few parameters. Once sequenced, the path in the shortcut is prefixed with the local storage location of the sequence, pushing the path length to 278 characters which is byond what we can use in Windows.
    Can anyone advise ways around this?
    Many thanks

    Sure.
    I'm using App-V v5.
    The shortcut for the application would be:
    "c:\program files\application\application.exe param1 param2 param3 param4 param5" etc etc
    Translated into App-V 5 this would become:
    "C:\ProgramData\App-V\9816CD98-D85C-4BB3-8597-7615201EAC6D\63EA6D79-DA43-46FD-AAE4-F2E602C0A906\Root\application.exe param1 param2 param3 param4 param5 etc etc"
    So, the following causes the command line to exceed 255 chars:
    "C:\ProgramData\App-V\9816CD98-D85C-4BB3-8597-7615201EAC6D\63EA6D79-DA43-46FD-AAE4-F2E602C0A906"
    Instead of:
    "c:\program files\application"
    In my particular case 2 of the parameters are UNC paths and without App-V v5 the path is shorter than 255 chars. but with App-V v5 its over 270.
    Many thanks

  • Problem with up-arrow on a long command line

    I often use the "terminal" window to open up a connection (via ssh) to linux and unix boxes.
    While I'm logged into the remote computer and I try to edit a previous command, I notice that my
    display gets all fouled up if the command that I'm trying edit is very long. I'm unable to do the
    usual unix tricks of up-arrowing to the command and then backspacing through it to perform my edits. Often my only recourse is to retype the entire command which is a pain and prone to error.
    I'm using bash as my Mac shell and tcsh on the remote machines.
    Has anybody experienced this? Any hints?

    It's a visual-only problem with Terminal.app.
    Other than the cosmetic effect, you will find that the editing works as you expect - you might just have to be psychic with regards to telling how far to backspace and where/when to make your edits.
    The problem has been there for a long time. You might have better luck setting the terminal to a different emulation (Terminal -> Preferences -> Declare terminal as:) to see if one of the other emulations work for you, or use a different terminal application such as iTerm

  • Command line editing -- move quickly

    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
    I'm running bash.
    I have a long command line:
    /Users/mac/Sites/bithoist/BitHoist-PPC-MacOS-X   -offset 0x0000  /Users/mac/Sites/bithoist/commandLine/bins/aSunbird.bin   -stdout -hex   -r 0x0000,0x002f
    I'd like to move quickly to the last 0 in -offset 0x0000.
    I know about control + a and I found out about esc + f.  I do not find pressing esc then f then esc then f that easy.  I'd like to at least be able to hold down the esc key and press f's.
    Can I configure something?
    Could I redefine a word to only be " " (space) in the terminal?  Not sure I like this idea.
    Would be nice to user the mouse.

    You could switch to vi style command line editing.
    shopt -s -o vi  # can be put in your .bash_profile (or .bash_login (or .profile))
    but then you need to hit <ESC> to get into vi command mode, but once in command vi command mode, you can use 'e' to quickly move to the end of the next work.  Hitting the key repeatedly will quickly get you to the end of 0x0000
    But now you need to hit 'i' to get back into insert mode.
    I do realize that vi mode is not without its annoyances.
    You can also remap the emacs key bindings using the bash 'bind' command.
    bind '"\C-f"':forward-word  # which would find control-f to forward-word
    which might be easier than escape-f

  • Long commands in bash terminal overwrites my prompt, instead of new line

    When I'm in Terminal and I type a long command or something, instead of the Terminal continuing the command onto the next line, it starts overwriting my username@host prompt. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Does it happen in all user accounts? You may have altered your bash shell profiles in some way. To check this, run the following commands, and then post the results of each here (the results should open in a TextEdit window):
    cat ~/.bash_profile | open -fe
    cat ~/.bashrc | open -fe
    cat /etc/profile | open -fe

  • [solved] command line music player

    Hi,
    i'm looking for a very simple command line music player like mpg123 but with a server option like mocp/mpd.
    Other than mocp or mpd i want it for playing files on-the-fly. Like browsing around and playing files i see in the current directory, queueing them, maybe with a curses interface like ncmpc.
    As far as i know, mpg123 can't queue and doesn't run in the background per default. mocp on the other hand comes very close but i don't think it can play files out of the current working directory like i want it.
    Do you know a tool that fits my description?
    Thanks in advance,
    demian

    fwiw, i have a script i call playnow which accepts a file path and plays it through mpd.  i use it for one-off downloaded content or whatever.  it just adds it to a temp folder, quickly updates the db, adds the temp folder to the current playlist (queuing) and plays it.
    it's been working well for me.  i also hear mpd accepts the file:/// uri scheme which kinda takes care of this usage case too.
    As far as I know, MPD's database is updated automatically via inotify as soon as a file is added, so I think you don't even need to update before playing.
    sounds great in theory, but i'm not so sure about in practice.
    for inotify to pick up the new file(s) and mpd to update itself all between bash executing `ln -s` and `mpc add` would be... impressive.  calling `mpc --wait update` manually means i only wait exactly as long as the update requires.
    thanks for the advice though, maybe i'll test it out and see.

  • [SOLVED] Long comand line input

    Hello. I have problem with my gnome-terminal. When the command line is too long, it rolls to the same row instead of the next one.
    Here you can see it if my explanation isn't clear enough:
    I don't remember since when I have this problem, but I have modified my .bashrc file some time ago. Maybe this is the reason. Its content:
    # Check for an interactive session
    [ -z "$PS1" ] && return
    complete -cf sudo
    alias sudo="sudo -E"
    alias ls='ls --color=auto'
    PS1="\e[1;34m\u@\h \W> \e[m"
    I would appreciate any hint how to fix it

  • How to use long capture filter with Network Monitor 3.4 command line

    I want to exclude all traffic from a list of subnets in my capture. This makes for a rather long and complex filter. Is there any option on the command line to refer to a file describing this filter or can one only use the /capture "my extremely long
    filter" command? So, I would have to make the entire thing into one line?

    I suppose if it's longer than 2048 or 4096, there will be a command line length limitation.  Maybe there's a way to work around it with a environment variable, but I think there will always be a limit.  Perhaps there's an easier way to right your
    filter?  Can you use something like the subnet example in the library to shorten the filter.
    Also, do you think your filter will affect capturing speed.  The more complex the filter, the longer it takes to evaluate each incoming message.  That means we have to buffer, and if the firehose is too much, we don't catch all the water :)
    If the UI can keep up, then it shouldn't be a problem, but some firehoses are bigger than others.  Plus, there driver filters which can filter faster for NMCap.
    Moving forward, Message Analyzer (http://blogs.technet.com/blogs), is the replacement for Network Monitor, which can do the same most of the same kinds of capabilities, but using powershell.  I think you'd
    have more flexibility with variable lengths there.  Plus you can script fancy things.

  • [solved]Command line script to equalise volume levels of all mp3 files

    Hello guys,
    I have a bunch of mp3 files within a folder. Unfortunately they have unequal volume levels. Some of them are far too low, others too loud.
    Is there a simple command line script to equalise all of them?
    Regards
    Robert
    Last edited by orschiro (2012-12-30 17:44:59)

    I remember I found such a script a long time ago. I suppose it still works, here it is http://codepad.org/MLu1iscD. Please tell me if it works for you. By the way, it depends on mp3gain and python2-eyed3.
    ps: As far as I can see, this script doesn't change the mp3 files itself, but stores the new volume in the id3 tag. This means, that you won't corrupt your files in any way, but the player needs to be able to get the volume information and adjust it. The script measures both the album and the track gain. Which one is used can be configured in the player.

  • [Solved] Assembly - Passing Integer Command Line Parameters

    This is as good a place to ask as any I suppose, so here goes.
    I'm really only interested in knowing if it is at all possible to push actual values, in this case integers, on the stack from the command Line, i.e. passing arguments and if so how, because as far as I can gather, it is simply impossible to pass anything other than strings.
    Yes I am a noob at assembly, if anyone should doubt that.
    Best regards.
    I thought the best thing to do is simply to explain what I'm actually doing.
    In short, I need to derive the Lightness/Luminance level of a pixel. This of course can be done a number of way. Initially I experimented with image magic, but when I couldn't figure it out, I thought: "Hey, why not learn something along the way?"
    So here I an, trying to do some assembly under linux.
    For those interested the process is actually rather sinbple:
    1. get and convert the rgb input as needed.
    2. Determine the highest and lowest channel (progress so far):
    mov ax, $1;
    mov cx, $2;
    mov dx, $3;
    cmp ax, cx;
    jng else;
    mov ax, ax;
    mox bx, cx;
    jmp next;
    else:
    mov ax, cx;
    mov bx, ax;
    next:
    cmp dx, ax;
    jng else2;
    mov ax, dx;
    jmp end;
    else2:
    cmp bx, dx;
    jnl end;
    mov bx, dx
    end:
    3. add the two values and divide by two. possible implement a way to check if the addition is even or not, so to enable proper rounding.

    Well, at the same time it makes sense and it don't.
    I makes sense to have a "common language", so to speak, so that various applications can be piped together.
    At the same time however, it's a waste to have the majority of the code dedicated to making conversions. First one for the input and then one for the output.
    But that life I guess.
    Thanks for now.
    When you run a program on a Linux system, it ultimately all boils down to the following function:
    int execve(const char *path, char *const argv[], char *const envp[]);
    Without going into full detail: the first argument is the path to the program being executed. The second argument is literally the "argv" argument list the program sees (which is a null-pointer-terminated array of pointers to null-character-terminated strings). The third argument is the environment. Relevant to you is the second argument. It doesn't matter if it's an assembly program, a C program, or a shell script; the "command-line" arguments to the program, i.e., the argv array, are pointers to strings.
    Lest you have the brilliant idea to take an integer apart into bytes and stick them in a string as one of the argument as some others have suggested, you should consider the following: what if one of the bytes of the integer is 0? That technically ends the "string," and everything following that byte is discarded by execve. Adding 1 to all the bytes wouldn't work, since 0xff would wrap around to 0 again. To make it work, you'd need to encode the integer in some other complicated way to avoid null characters and then decode it inside your program. In other words, you might as well just pass an ordinary string and parse it with atoi or strtol.
    You are of course right, and thanks for the very nice explanation, however it's still a pain in the but.
    I like working with number, not with letters, but enough of this.
    Thanks to all and to all a good night, day or whatever you please.
    Best regards

  • Bash shell does not recognise 'java', 'javac' commands (Linux command line)

    i' ve used javac and java compile & execute commands to build the same application on the DOS command line with Windows - no problem.
    But when I try to compile the same file on the command line under Linux Redhat (7.1) using Bash shell i get <bash: javac: command not found> and <bash: java: command not found>.
    In both cases I'm using j2sdk1.4.2 downloaded from java.sun.com for Windows & Linux respectively.
    I make sure I have both the javac and the file I want to compile in the same directory ../j2sdk1.4.2/bin for both the Windows and the Linux applications.
    Is there something I need to do to get bash to recognise javac, java etc? Is there a different setup procedure?
    Any angles on this are much appreciated ..

    Have you tried these correctly..
    Set the CLASSPATH environment variable to include whichever directories you like, eg (on bash) type:
    export CLASSPATH=$CLASSPATH:.:<your java dirs>
    To make java easier to run, put the directory in which it is installed into your path:
    export JAVA_HOME=<where you installed java>
    Then do
    export PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin
    verify it has worked by simply typing
    java
    You can put all of these commands into the .*rc file for your shell, so that they are executed every time you open the shell. So if you are using bash you can put them into ~/.bashrc
    Read up setting the PATH and CLASSPATH for more info.
    This shall resolve the issue .
