Basic AV Receiver/FIOS Questions

OK, I know this is basic stuff for most of you, but bear with me as I'm not the tech wizard I always hoped I would be.
I currently have FIOS, A Blu-Ray Player, and a game system connected to my HDTV with individual HDMI Cables going through an automatic switch (whatever device I power on is the what shows up on the TV) - the output of the switch goes to the TVs HDMI input (older tv only has 1 HDMI In connection (don't laugh))
I am upgrading my AV receiver to one that offers 4 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output as well as the usual connections.
Here are the questions:
1.  If I connect FIOS to one of the HDMI inputs on the receiver and then the HDMI out from the receiver to the TV - does this mean I must turn on the AV Receiver in order to watch TV?  Also, can I use the TV speakers in those instances when surround sound is not needed.
2.  If I connect the other components to HDMI inputs on the receiver, I assume I would have to rever to manually switching between sources thourgh the receiver as opposed to the automatic switching I now get from the 3 way switch.
3.  If I connect the FIOS box directly to the TV, how can I then take advantage of the surround capabilities of the receiver?
I'm sure I'm overlooking some other questions, but I would appreciate any advice I can get.
Thanks

1a - Yes, you receiver would have to be on to watch TV.
1b - Depends on your AVR. You may have to switch the audio from the AVR to the TV.
2. Yes. To alleviate this, you may want to look at universal remote, which would set the inputs for you. Logitech's Harmony remotes would work, series 500 and higher.
3- If you TV has an optical out, you could run a digital cable from the Audio Out of the TV to the AVR. This should allow you to take advantage of Dolby Digital 5.1.
When I had the Verizon STB's, I connected the component cables out to the TV and the HDMI to my AVR. That way, I was able to watch TV w/o surround as needed, and gave me the ability to use the Surround Sound when I wanted. The only issue for me was that the STB's would lose their SD Override setting, and cause SD programming to stretch.

If you have music that was purchased on different iTunes accounts than the one you use, then you must provide the password, otherwise the tunes are not considered yours.  You can turn off iCloud and just use the usual USB sync method.  But I wonder whether you'll have the same problem?

  • Transporter - Basic installation and connection questions

We have never used or installed the Transporter before.  We are currently using Tidal 5.3x and are upgrading a sandbox environment to 6.2.  I have looked at all the transporter documentation I can find and am still missing some very basic questions - plus I cannot get the "help" option in transporter to work.
WHERE do you install the Transporter and why?  CM Server?  Master Server?  Desktop?  If it is on a server, then does the user that runs it need to remote the server in order to user transporter?
I have attempted to install on each of the above, but cannot establish a connection.  When I click "test" I get error "Failed to Connect [Login failure with responseCode [404]]What should I be entering in each of the following Connections fields?  My comments indicate what I have assumed/attempted to enter and received the error above.
Connection name  - just a given name to a connection? aka TESSandboxMaster
Server Name  - what server?  master?  Is there a specific format this needs to be in?
DSP/Plug in name - I found a dsp file on my CM Server named TES-6.0.dsp - should I put TES-6.0 here?
User - network user that is a Super user in Tidal?  aka networkname\superuser?
pwd - windows pwd for that user?
Thank you for any help you can provide.

    Hi Patricia,
    1. The Transporter is installed on the Client Manager - the CM is essentially a web server to handle client requests, perform sacmd commands, and utility for transporting jobs from one environment to another. A Tidal user would have to be granted rights to Move Jobs to Production, and I believe Tidal user has to be able to sign on to the CM as well.
    2. I've reviewed an older copy of the transporter user guide 6.1 provides instructions on how to complete those fields:
To create a connection: (on page 32)
In the Connection Name field, enter the name for the connection file.
In the Server Name field, enter the name of the Client Manager machine.
In the DSP/Plugin Name field, enter the master instance name.
The master instance name is the TES DSP or Plugin name. This is displayed from the Web UI in the Master Status pane.
In the Server Port field, enter the listening Web Service port used by the Tidal Web Client. The default is 8080 for non-secured connections and 8443 for secured connections.
In the User and Password fields, enter a valid Enterprise Scheduler user name and password.
Select the Secure HTTP option if you want to connect securely through the HTTPS protocol.
This option is enabled only if Transporter has been configured for secure
connections. Figure 8 is an example of Transporter not configured for secure
    connections.

  • Comcast to FIOS questions

I am considering switching from comcast to Verizon FIOS.  I have questions that have not yet been answered for me.  Until they are, I will not be able to make the switch.
    1.  After the main FIOS comes into the house, does it then use the existing COAX cable to connect to my TV sets?  I have gotten conflicting answers on this.
    2.  With my current Comcast set up, I have two DVRs on the main TV so that I can record more than 2 shows at the same time.   Each DVR has a separate remote control since they are different manufacturer models.  I have read that will not be possible with the Verizon FIOS setup.   What alternate solutions are there?
    3.  In my current set up, the cable comes into the house and then the COAX cable is split multiple ways so that it feeds my computer and wireless router (via the Comcast cable modem) and also feeds to my main TV on the first floor (split again to go to the two DVRs) and via COAX to an upstairs bedroom.  If those various COAX hook-ups can be used for the TV, then things are good.  If a new cable needs to be pulled for the upstairs TV, then that is not so good.
    4.  The current telephone connection box is on the opposite side of the house from where the Comcast cable enters the house.  The FIOS box on the street is on the same side of the house as the telephone connection box.  How will the technician come into the house?  Will the existing copper phone lines still be used?
    5.  With respect to #2 above, what about using TIVO.  If I get a TIVO box and their subscription for my second DVR, what fees from Verizon will be required to make it work (e.g. cablecard, etc.).
    6. With respect to #3 above, that upstairs TV is currently using just a digital adapter box (Comcast just raised the rental fee for that from $0 to $1.99 per month).  I don't need any sort of DVR up there -- does Verizon have a similar device and what will its rental fee be.

Note that these forums are for customer to customer assistance.  You won't find Verizon answering specific service or pricing questions here.  For that, you need to contact them directly through the methods listed on their "contact us" web page.
FiOS is fiber to the home.  At the home, a device called an ONT converts the fiber to coax and telephone.  The ONT can be mounted inside or outside.  A power supply with a backup battery is installed inside near an AC outlet.
Once the ONT is installed, it connects to your existing coax network for TV and internet.  It connects to your existing phone wire for phone.  If the ONT is far from an existing connection point for either, then the technician will need to run new coax and/or phone wires.
The Verizon router connects to the in-home coax network.  The coax provides both the WAN connection to the ONT and a LAN connection that is used by the set-tops.  In home computer equipment connects to the router's WiFi and wired Ethernet ports.  The router can be located anywhere with access to a coax, power, and whatever computer equipment needs to be near it.
Verizon does have low cost set-top boxes.  You'll need to contact them for the details.
It may be possible to get two different models of DVR, but unlikely.  Note that Verizon supports multi-room DVR, so you could put them in different rooms and be able to access all recordings on both DVRs.  Another solution is to use IR remote sensors on both boxes and locate the sensors far enough apart that you could point the remote in different directions to select which box you control.
It's impossible for anyone on this forum to know how they'd do the install at your home.  Your best bet is to read more info on the web (on Verizon's pages as well as places like dslreports) and talk directly to Verizon.
    Good Luck.

  • AS2 Basic Authentication - Receiver CC

    Hi ,
I would like to know the Basic Authentication field in Receiver Communication Channel for AS2 Adapter . Our Trading Partner has provided with username and Password information but there is one more mandatory field Realm. Any idea what is this field and what information to be filled in ?
    Laks

The Realm refers to the content management option used at your receiver. The same receiver organizations have domain specific content management solutions. If such a Realm is used, you need to provide that information. This information should be retrieved by receiver organizations only. This should not be mandatory field.

  • Daily I receive a question for updating my Firefox (s.6.17 MacOs), but when I agree the result is Or no contact with the update-server

Daily I receive a message for updating my Firefox (3.6.17 MacOs 10.6.8) but when I agree, it takes quite a long time and then OR a message: no contact with the update-server OR something like: Sorry we cannot find xxxxx(?!).
    QUESTION: HOW TO UPDATE?
[By the way: what about version 8.0! Is that perhaps for mobile-systems?
    With regards, Jan Stevens.

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop
    *Firefox 8.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
*Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
*Install the new version that you have downloaded

  • Basic jsp and servlet question (JSP Model 2)

    Hi
I want to make an website where i use JSP Model 2 architecture. However I got a basic question
    1. I need to separate business logic from presentation with the use of jsp and servlets. Meaning I want no html code in the servlet. Can you give a simple example of how this can be done? If I map my implementation of httpServlet to a jsp page in web.xml and override doPost() and doGet(). The calls to the jsp page comes to the servlet as it should. I want to process some methods (calling sessionbeans or similar which in turn calls entitybeans) and then show the jsp page.
How do I show the jsp page without mixing html in the servlet as I've done below:
    doGet(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse res)
    PrintWriter p = response.getWriter();
p.print("<html><body>Hello world</body></html>"); //I dont want to do //this, I want to display the JSP site
    doPost(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse res)
    //doSomething
    }Message was edited by:

You should treat your servlet class much like a controller, where you can then use JSP as the view. The way you achieve this is to use the forward() method in RequestDispatcher.
    Say you've got a servlet class org.yoursite.controller.YourController:
public void doGet(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse resp)
      throws ServletException, IOException {
//Set some value for use in the JSP file associated wth me
      req.setAttribute("greeting", "Hello world!");
//Done with our business logic, off we go to the JSP file
      ServletContext app = getServletContext();
        RequestDispatcher disp;
        disp = app.getRequestDispatcher("/some/jsp/file.jsp);
        disp.forward(req, resp);
    }Now in your JSP file:
    <h1>Example</h1>
    <div>
      I just want to say <%= request.getAttribute("greeting") %>
</div>Going to that servlet now executes business logic and then points to the JSP file for the view. You can forward from servlet to servlet too if needs be. The string you pass to forward() is whatever would be in the URI of the request so any <servlet-mapping> configurations in web.xml are used ;)
There is some pretty in-depth documentation on the J2EE blueprints website, namely service-to-worker and front-controller patterns. I dare say if you're looking for this sort of code you'll want to look at the composite view pattern too (also on blueprints).

  • Basic jsp UNIX setup question

    Hi folks,
We have just installed 9iAS 1.0.2.1 on HPUX 11.0
Everything works fine except for the JSP demos like hello user, lottery, etc.
They all fail with the same general error. I suspect it is an environmental issue but cannot be sure as I have found nothing i the docs. Any insight is appreciated. It is important that I fix this as we are planning on installing the JPDK.
Here is the error log we receive in the browser when we run the "hello user" sample:
    JSP Error:
    Request URI:/demo/basic/hellouser/hellouser.jsp
    Exception:
    java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: sun/tools/javac/Main
Here is the error log we receive in the browser when we run the "lottery" sample:
    JSP Error:
    Request URI:/demo/basic/lottery/lotto.jsp
    Exception:
    java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: sun/tools/javac/Main
    Thanks,
    Fred

Add your java tools.jar file to the classpath for JServ (assumiing you are using JServ in 9iAS). The file is usually in your jdk home directory under lib.

  • Basic backup and maintenance questions - ZCM 10.3.3

    Hello all,
I am looking for information and feedback about ZCM maintenance and database backup.
We have ZCM 10.3.3 running on a SLES 11 VM. I do keep a clone of the ZCM server when updates are made for backup.
I have I guess a couple of simple questions:
    1. How do I tell which database type was selected when ZCM was setup?
    2. What are the basic maintenance procedures to address database issues?
    3. What should I be backing up for the database?
I did not build this ZCM server and I need to know more. Mostly I need to do some database maintenance as workstation deletions take an extremely long time and I have read somewhere else in the forums that I should be performing DB maintenance and I just need some sort of procedure.
    Thanks,
    Steve D.

    Hi,
You can check inside the file zdm.xml to know which database you have
The file is locate at :
    On Windows
    ZENworks_installation_path\conf\datamodel
    On Linux
    /etc/opt/novell/zenworks/datamodel
For database maintenance you can check in the doc Novell Doc: System Planning, Deployment, and Best Practices Guide - Scalability, Fault Tolerance, Maintenance, and Sizing of the Database Server
You can also take a look a the disaster recovery guide because it give some info to what you need to take in backup.

  • Basic FCP Sequence Settings question for 1080 footage w/ 7D

OK. So maybe it's the fact I've been working for 18 hours straight and my mind is partially play-dough, but I'm thoroughly confused right now by what I think may be the dumbest question ever.
Anyway... here's my problem and my workflow.
    PROBLEM:
Stupid black box above and below my 1080 footage after I export to QT out of FCP (this box never existed in my 720 footage)
    WORKFLOW:
    - I have 1080/30p footage from a Canon 7D and Rebel T2i
    - Converted to Prores 422 in MPEG Streamclip (I can never keep the file system intact to use the FCP EOS plugin. I need to work on that)
    - Imported into FCP7
    1080 SEQUENCE SETTINGS:
    Frame size: 1920x1080 HDTV 1080 (16:9)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square
    Field Dominance: None
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
    Compressor: HDV1080p30 (Also tried ProRes)
    Quality: 100 percent
After I export to Quicktime with current settings, the video plays back with a small black bar above and below the footage. Weird. This seems kind of normal to me, except these bars never existed when I edited in 720. Not that it looks bad, I'm just confused why the bars are there when they weren't there in 720.
    720 SEQUENCE SETTINGS:
    Frame size: 1280x720 HDTV 720p (16:9)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square
    Field Dominance: None
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
    Compressor: HDV 720p30
    Quality: 100 percent
When I export this, no black bars above and below.
So why -- If my settings are basically the same except for the 1080/720 substitution -- do I get the above/below black boxes for 1080 and I don't get them for 720?
I don't think I want the box. Don't like the box. The box is bad. I think.
    Thanks.

I'll send my thanks over here, too, Shane. Posting on multiple sites because project is due today.
Hopefully this will be a lesson learned and my sequence settings are point-on from here on out.
If anyone else is reading this and has a similar problem, though, Shane came up with the solution:
"Highlight all the footage you pasted...then right-click and choose REMOVE ATTRIBUTES. Then check BASIC MOTION." After checking basic motion, you also have to check distort.
And if the quicktime inspector doesn't read out 1920x1080, don't worry about it and just trust FCP.
    Thanks for the input, all.

  • Basic application deployment specific questions

I have some questions related to application deployment. Following this tutorial, I am able to create an executable 'jar' file and deploy it to another computer. So the basics work for me, however ...
    1.
In order to make the application running on different computer, I manually need to copy ~8 specific files (firebird database dll's) in directories like:
    c:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin
    c:\Windows\system32
If i do so, everything works fine. I did not test this yet, but I believe, IzPack software will be able to help me with this. The problem is, how do I set the destination path for those files on destination computer? This path can vary on different computers, so this path can't be hardcoded. Besides, is it normal to place application specific files into those directories?
    2.
My application uses relative references to files, e.g.:
    static String DATABASE_FILE_NAME = "software.fdb";
static Database _firebirdDB = new Database(DATABASE_FILE_NAME);If i execute application like this:
c:\myApplication\java -jar "NameOfJar.jar", I get a bunch of exceptions, because my database file 'software.fdb' can't be located.
If I however execute application like this:
    c:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\java.exe -jar "NameOfJar.jar", then everything works all-right.
Obviously, my application depends on current working directory, when it's executed. How can I avoid this?
    Thanks for help in advance,
    Juraj

This may be silly question, but where can I find more information about 'installing complex applications with native libraries'? I even don't know, what to search google for ..
For instance, i have JAVA installed on my PC, but I don't have env. variable %JAVA_HOME% set. So I can't rely on this .. Really, the problem is that Java is designed to be platform-independent, but you're trying to use dlls which are native to each platform. To get the platform independence, Java generally doesn't know about any native libraries. If you have an application which depends on them, it's your responsibility to [get them to a place where Java can find them|http://www.inonit.com/cygwin/jni/helloWorld/load.html].
When you have a standard installer for an application, it's making sure the libraries are in the right place. If they aren't, it has to find a way to put them there. Sometimes the app will just keep a copy in its own directory, so that it doesn't have to install it into an OS directory. The setup.exe program is specially designed to handle this kind of thing on Windows.
Java, on the other hand, doesn't know you're on Windows. It could care less. All it knows is that it has Java code, and it's running in a JVM. If you explicitly tell it to load a system library, it does it and you can access it with JNI. But it still couldn't care less that you're on Windows.
Like I said, I've worked with packages that are mostly Java but have some native code. Usually, what it comes down to is the installation instructions saying, "Put this DLL in the Java path." Sometimes they have a nice little installer that does it for you, or can try to use JAVA_HOME and asks you where to put it if it can't find it. But you are absolutely right -- you can't rely on it because Java doesn't care you're on Windows. You should have JAVA_HOME from the Java installer, but it really doesn't care. It's your responsibility to package it in such a way that it works.
    3.
It is a bit strange, anyway. Normally, when I see application packages, I see something like 'setup.exe' bundled with dozens of 'dll's' .. Is it correct to put everything under 'jar'?Setup.exe is a Windows executable to install Windows programs. Java doesn't care that you're on Windows, so it offers JAR, an executable package format. There are some tools to make it easier for delivery on a particular platform, but I've never used them.

  • Haven't Received FiOS Prepaid Visa Reward

We signed up for Verizon FiOS back in June and part of the offer for locking into a two-year contract was a $200 prepaid Visa card. A few weeks later we decided to upgrade our bundle to get more TV channels and that deal promised a $400 prepaid Visa. I assumed that the original $200 Visa reward offer would be cancelled and replaced by the $400 Visa reward.
On September 21 I received an email with subject line "Important information regarding the status of your Verizon Reward" that included a user name and password and instructions to log in at http://www.verizon.com/rewards, however all attempts to log into the site resulted in a "Invalid Username/Password" message.
As of today we still haven't recieved a prepaid Visa, either $200 or $400. I tried calling the 800 number last week and spent about an hour on the phone being bounced around to four different people/departments and none of them could provide me with any status information.
If anyone from Verizon is monitoring these forums could you please let me know how I can get a status update on the prepaid Visa?
    Thank you.

  • Receiving a Question Mark at start up

I own a 13 inch Macbook, and my problem is that when I turn my computer on, only a white screen appears, then after a few moments a folder with a question mark appears on the screen. I cannot get past this screen, and I am really unsure how to fix the problem.

It means critical system files needed for startup are missing or damaged. You will have to reinstall OS X. You may be able to do so without erasing the drive if the drive is not corrupted:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Basic s-video cable question

    hello,
I'm new to using a dvd recorder and am trying to hook it up.   My tv does not have an s-video port but the dvd player and cable box do.  I have the regular audio/video cables hooking the dvd player to the tv.. those work fine.  When i use those same cables to record with the dvd player, from box to dvd player they work fine also.  I figured since it was there i would get an s-video cable and use that.  So i have basic red and white audio cables hooking the cable box to the dvd recorder and it records audio ok.. but the s-video cable i just connected the cable box to the dvd player either doesn't work or i'm missing something because there is no video going to the player.
Basically am I missing something in getting the cable box to product video through my new s-video cable?
    thank you

    Go to Solution.

You should not have paid more than $5 for a s-video cable.  Next time, order from Monoprice.com.
The Motorola box always outputs through s-video, so if you aren't getting a picture, then you need to check two things.  First, make sure the s-video is connected to a s-video input on the DVD recorder, not a s-video output.  Second, you may need to change a setting on the DVD recorder to use the s-video input rather than composite (yellow RCA) input.
