Basic Building Tips

When mounting the Heat Sink and Fan be sure to be very careful to center it and to be gentle with the mounting clips. Get rough here and it will break. If you remove it then be sure to completely clean off the old Thermal Paste and to apply new paste each time it is removed and reseated. Air gaps here can kill a CPU. Be sure to carefully follow any instructions on your thermal paste so that you use the right amount and distribute it properly on the CPU for your setup.
When mounting the motherboard make sure there is nothing under the board except the proper risers and that they all line up with the correct holes in your motherboard. It is more common than you may guess to mess up here and burn up a perfectly good motherboard.
Make sure before you power up that all the power connectors are firmly seated and in place where they need to be. The square 4 pin connector on the motherboard must have a connection from the Power Supply as well as the 20 pin. In the case of the newer 24 pin ATX specs you won't have a 20 and a 4 pin  plug as they are now combined. Be sure to make sure you have the right PSU for your motherboard.
Double check that the system and CPU fans are properly plugged in and they turn freely without power. (Don't stick fingers or other objects into a running fan).
Make sure that all the drives have power and are plugged into the motherboard according to your manual. In the case of a Sata drive most will have two different Power Connections but you should only use one power connector per drive.
Do a quick check that there is nothing shorting against the motherboard or cards in the machine. Keep metal or conductive objects away from any component boards or power connections.
Make sure the D-Bracket is install correctly. This can be a key piece of equipment to check if you have any post problems. You can check what the LED's mean here.
Double check that your RAM is firmly seated and inserted in the right direction in the socket. Don't laugh but I heard one guy that forced it in the wrong way and wondered why he could not post. Luckily he did not fry something.
Make sure your AGP and all other cards are properly seated. Many times a fix for displays not working is just that simple.
OK we are almost ready to fire up. As this pertains to A64's make sure that you have a power supply that is either approved for use by MSI/AMD or that you have plenty of amps on the 12 volt rail. Typically we have noted many issues based on stability with PSU's being rated at less than 24A on the 12v rail. More could become needed as you add componants like multiple SLi'ed Video cards. Find out what your power requirements are before you assume that you have enough. Too few amps can be as damaging to a system as a bad PSU.
OK fire it up and be prepared to enter CMOS setup with the DEL key. You will need to tap it repeatedly until you enter the CMOS Setup. On first setup some boards require the F1 key is used. Carefully read what is on the screen or reffer to your manual.
Good if you got this far then it is likely that you will be OK from here on out for most things. Start with entering your drive info and prepare to fire up and install windows. Keep in mind that you will need the special drivers to install your SATA Raid drives if you have any. When the windows install starts you need to keep tapping the F6 key to load those drivers from the diskette MSI supplied. "If you are using an Nvidia3 chipset with a single SATA drive and not raiding, you can skip this step, it will automatically be recognized by windows." (Tip Provided by timkessler)
If you did not make it to the CMOS setup then check for what LED's are lit on the D-bracket. Fix any problems that are indicated and repeat the prior step. In many cases a system will fail at the CPU if there is a RAM Timing issue or bad RAM. This is simply because the RAM controller is inside of the CPU now.
Now that you have your drives setup close and save CMOS Setup and proceed to install windows. Make sure that you do a clean install so that only those drivers needed are loaded into windows and running. Just transferring your drive to a newly built system is never a good idea as things will not be properly setup for your new components and you are just making more work for yourself in the end. If the info is needed on that drive then at least try a repair install so that you can get up and running. Be sure to back up that essential data and then do a clean install. Your system will thank you many times over.
Here is a link to help you through some of the items listed in Bios.
OK now you have Windows install, you need to make sure that all the motherboard drivers get installed first. They should be on a CD supplied with the motherboard or you can find them at MSI's download site. If you download them be very careful to only use the drivers for the parts you have. Any other drivers can cause damage to your system.
After all the Motherboard drivers are installed then install DirectX and any Microsoft updates for windows.
Install Video card Drivers, Sounds Card, Mouse and any other parts drivers you have in you machine. Keep in mind that if you install these before the Motherboard Drivers you will likely as not have many things that do not work right or at full speed. The order that you install things is important.
You can do some basic checks now to determine system health. Memtest86 can help you with basic memory testing. This is important as if you have memory issues with either timing or bad memory a lot of strange problems can crop up or you may not even get the system to run. Prime95 is also a very useful tool to help you determine overall system stability. 3D Marks 2001 SE can help determine your overall system health as well as testing your graphics card and determining overall system performance. There are alot of benchmarks and system tests out there to help you determine how your system is doing. Chose something basic like I showed to get you started.
At this stage you can now install software for the Internet or other uses. I typically wait and do some basic benchmarks on a system before anything gets loaded for normal operation but it is not a needed step. Do be sure to setup a Firewall to protect you before you get connected to the web though. It takes a very short period, usually measured in seconds, for an unprotected system to get messed up by spyware and trojans.
Enjoy your machine.
If you are going to overclock make sure to run the system for a few days first to make certain that things are stable and properly burned in. This step requires some knowledge so do your research. I am not going into those steps here as they are for advanced users and could void your warranties. If you decide to overclock be sure you are prepared to be able to replace parts if you do things wrong and at extra expense in most cases. Make sure if you do overclock you work with good test software to help you find the limits and do it in small steps. That will reduce but not eliminate the possibility of damaging something.
This list is currently a work in progress and will be added too over the next days and weeks. If you have something to add please PM me and I will add it in.

OK, just to finish this once and for all since my rig is working flawlessly for one month now.
1. YES, you need to estimate your total current consumption on each rail and particularly on the 12 V rail.
2. YES, you need a brand name PSU, if possible with active PFC.
3. YES, your PSU's total current on 12V rail must cover your estimated calculation.
4. NO, you don't need to apply an enormous safety margin which conducts you to min. 24A on the 12V rail.
I have built an FX55 system with MSI Neo4 Platinum, 2x512 MB DDRAM OCZ 4001024ELDC-K memory, with 2x120 GB Maxtor SATA, Philips 1840K DVD-RW internal, Radeon X850XT PE video, Thermaltake case XaserV (with 5 case fans), Thermaltake PSU Purepower 560W 22A/12 V. The estimated current on 12A was 17,4 A.
It runs perfectly since one month, without any problem, and before you tell me that the safety margin is needed for future expansion, let me tell you that this is pure BS. I will never expand this system, when it will become obsolete it will be a major upgrade including Mb/video/proc and in this case changing the PSU will mean almost nothing compared to the total cost.
Besides, it is an absurd idea to think that you'll buy a PSU for life and that all your PC will be upgraded except for the PSU that you'll keep eternally. The ATX form factor's future is not certain, BTX is slowly coming, ATX 2.0 is already here with dedicated connectors for PCIX etc. etc. It is simply not worth it to invest in a golden plated PSU which you'll change anyway shortly.

    Hi again,
I'd like to propose a final edit to my previous tip [Final Cut Express: Basic Troubleshooting|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2662419]. This edit adds post anchor points to allow for easy linking in the future.
The final version will be submitted in the post below.
    Thanks for your help!

    Final Cut Express: Basic Troubleshooting
There are many problems that can occur in any version of Final Cut Express and each one is generally best treated with a solution specifically tailored to it. However, you will generally get the best results if you follow a simple step-by-step approach to troubleshooting outlined here.
    1. Quit the application.
    2. Is your computer supported by the version of FCE you are running?
Final Cut is particularly susceptible to problems when being used in conjunction with hardware, operating systems, and versions of Quicktime other than those that are supported. Always check before updating to see if the version you are running will continue to be supported. You can view the hardware requirements for FCE4 [here|http://www.apple.com/finalcutexpress/specs.html]. Note that FCE4 is the only version of the program supported by Snow Leopard. It is generally a good idea when working with Pro Apps to do a complete erase and install when updating to a new OS and then reinstall the program afterwards. Never update any critical software such as Quicktime or your OS when you are in the middle of an important project. Always keep a backup in case something goes wrong when you do.
    3. Is your software fully updated to the current version?
In the upper menu bar, select the  symbol and click +Software Update+ in the contextual menu that appears. Make sure to download any Final Cut Express, Quicktime (if supported by the version of FCE you are running) , ProKit, and other important updates that the system recommends. Updated versions provide critical bug fixes and improvements that may solve the problem you were experiencing.
    4. Are you using supported external hardware?
FCE can capture using FireWire from camcorders recording in DV-NTSC, DV-PAL, or HDV and can ingest using USB from AVCHD camcorders. Make sure that your recording device is compliant with one of these formats and not some related variant (such as AVCHD Lite). External USB drives are not supported by Apple for video editing - if you are experiencing problems while using one try disconnecting it and see if the issue persists.
    5. Trash your preference files and repair disk permissions.
Whenever you have trouble in Final Cut Express it is almost always a good idea start by trashing your preference files. These can easily get corrupted and many problems can be quickly fixed by giving them a dump. The Apple Knowledge Base article found [here|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2611] outlines how to do this - [Tom Wolsky|http://discussions.apple.com/profile.jspa?userID=342090] also describes a good method [here|http://fcpbook.com/Misc1.html]. It is also a good idea to repair any permissions issues that may have arisen, and you can find a good description of the process [here|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963?viewlocale=en_US].
    6. Search the discussion forums for solutions to similar problems.
You may be experiencing a common problem with the application or one that has been addressed when brought up by other users. Enter your query in the search bar on Apple Discussions and narrow your question to the [FCE forum|http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=936&start=0] to get the most accurate results. Unless something very strange is going on it’s likely that you will find an answer or proposed solution has already been posted.
    7. Start a new topic.
If you are unable to find an already posted solution on the forum that works for you and trashing your preference files has not fixed your problem, post a new topic in the FCE forum describing what is going on. Be as descriptive as possible and make sure to include pertinent information such as the specifications of your computer, OS, Quicktime version, the sequence you are editing in within the program, and the clip you are placing in it if this relates to the problem you are experiencing. Refer to [Eric W.|http://discussions.apple.com/profile.jspa?userID=337386]’s announcement [How to Post a new Topic|http://discussions.apple.com/ann.jspa?annID=650] for more information.
    8. Perform a complete removal of the application and reinstall.
If you are not receiving working answers to your problem or it appears that your dilemma has not been reproduced in the past, try reinstalling FCE. You should first completely remove all traces of the program. Digital Rebellion has a nice free application called [FCS Remover|http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcs_remover.htm] which automatically does this - alternatively you can manually do it by moving all components listed [here|http://support.apple.com/kb/TA47818?viewlocale=en_US] to the trash and emptying it. Note that the files listed may be named something slightly different if you are using a different version of Final Cut.
    9. Contact Apple.
If all else fails, you should go ahead and contact Apple. It’s possible that you received a faulty disc or that they will have a solution to the problem that no one else has thought of. You can find pertinent contact information [here|http://www.apple.com/contact>.

  • Requesting standard basic build and deployment requirements

    Operational Data:
    Microsoft visual Studio 2008
    Visual Basic Windows Forms Application
    Crystal Reports 12.0.2000.0
Deploying on Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition
I have been having difficulty deploying a WindowsForms CrystalReports application that I developed.  The specifics of my troubles all bottom out in the tangle of runtime and development redistribution files.  It has taken some time for me to get to the point where I can see what is going on.
In order to save others from the pitfalls that I have encountered I wanted to give a short history.
I wrote a report.rpt that placed "Hello World!" in the header, no data, no dependencies.  I created a simple application that instantiates a CRViewer and places a new report based on the input report in that viewer.  Works great in house, and on most machines with the simple runtime.
My first crack at this application failed miserably on a Windows XP environment.  When I launched the application nothing appeared to happen at all.  This was disconcerting, but a check of the Event Viewer (Control Panel/Administrative Tools), revealed that the application was failing to load the form initialization.  This was failing before my try catch block, which seems to be hitting other devs who have had troubles indicated on other forums.  To get past this I removed the CrystalReportViewer widget from my actual windows form, and instead wiffled one into existence on the fly in my form load code:
    try
       Dim viewer As CrystalDecisions.Windows.Forms.CrystalReportViewer
       Dim report As ReportDocument
       viewer = New CrystalDecisions.Windows.Forms.CrystalReportViewer
       report = New ReportDocument
    Catch ex As ApplicationException
MessageBox.Show("Could not start viewer. "&ex.ToString(), "ApplicationException: ",MessageBoxButtons.OK )        End Try
This did not eliminate the trouble, but it did move the issue to inside an exception handler.  What I learned from my handler is that there were missing assemblies from my installation.  I began adding these assemblies into my installer one by one until I came to a working report.  The missing bits were:
    BusinessObjects.Licensing.KeycodeDecoder.dll
    CEReportSource.dll
    CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.dll
    CrystalDecisions.Enterprise.Desktop.Report.dll
    CrystalDecisions.Enterprise.Viewing.ReportSource.dll
    CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.DataSetConversion.dll
    CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.Prompting.dll
    CrystalDecisions.ReportSource.dll
    CrystalDecisions.Shared.dll
    CrystalDecisions.Web.dll
    CrystalDecisions.Windows.Forms.dll
I then tried to reinstall the runtime library, as well as the runtime from my particular version of Visual Studio.  I was able to remove the hand pulled libs from my deployment.
So, this brings me to the question:  What should I do to create and deploy a simple application based on the CrystalReports development kit that I have purchased?  What needs to be redistributed to the client's machine?  Is there a common repository for licensed developers to get the missing bits?  Is it expected that I have to install the VisualStudio redist and a machine specific runtime?  Is there one thing that will get it done?
I am using CRRedist2008_x86.msi and Crystal2008.exe, this seems like too much...
    Thanks in advance

    Joe,
Your notes indicate that you are using Crystal Reports 12. I noticed that you mentioned you have been attempting to deploy your application with CRRedist2008_x86.msi and Crystal2008.exe.
Please note those runtime packages are for Crystal Reports Basic for Visual Studio .NET. This version is the bundled version of Crystal Reports that comes with Visual Studio .NET 2008 (v 10.5).
You should be using the version 12 merge modules or server install packages. For specific information on how to deploy an application that uses the CR .NET runtime please review our deployment procedures here - https://boc.sdn.sap.com/node/8546.

  • Raid building tip - Turn off Windows "Automatic update"

If you are running Windows and are in the software configuration setup stage of  creating your raid, make sure you have windows update NOT set to automatic.
Otherwise during your long raid building stage (in my case it took almost an entire day when I configured my raid back in June) Windows could download an update and automatically install it and keep warning you that it will reboot in "so many " minutes unless you tell it to delay rebooting.  As you know, it will keep bugging your that it about to reboot over and over again.
Fortunately I have automatic updates turned OFF on my editing machine so I have no surprise rebooting.
Since automatic update can be complety silent, you might go to bed expecting to see your raid finished in the morning, only to be surprised to find that your computer rebooted sometime during the night -- and  your raid not completed.
    Rowby

Raid rebuilding will continue after a reboot. Restarting the system will not stop a rebuild from continuing.

  • First time build questions

I am quite a way through my first build - quite time consuming but a good learning curve. I have a few questions which I hope you could help me with.
    MSI MS-7030 nForce 3 K8N Neo Platinum
    AMD 64bit 3000
    Corsair (VS1GBKIT400) 1024MB (2 x 512MB Matched Pair), DDR400 / PC3200 non-ECC, Unbuffered, CL2.5
    Sapphire 9600XT 256mb
    LG 1710 B 17"LCD Monitor (DVI)
    Aopen cd-rw 32 x 12 x 48
    DVD Player Lite-on 16 x 48
Mitsumi 7-in-1 Floppy Drive / Media Drive
Windows 2000 Pro or Windows 2000 Server
    Microsoft PS2 Internet Keyboard
    Microsoft Optical mouse
    Tablet Wacom Graphire 2
Wireless ADSL Router (wired to desktop) D-Link DSL 604
Bios - The basic building tips mentions going into bios before loading Windows. Have not changed much in my bios except boot order. My Seagate Sata 160gb was detected fine as was everything else except a cd drive where the cable had pulled out on the MOB.
Should I change other settings in the bios before installing Windows or later. And if so which are the key settings to change and how do I work out what to change them to? (I am a bit green on bios) I looked at the link breaking through the bios barrier but other than reading every single item... Not sure where to start.
I also flashed the bios to the latest version - should I have done this? Or waited till later?
Windows I am using quite old versions of Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Server. In both cases including before flashing the bios the setup of devices phase seems to freeze, the blue bar does not move. If I reboot setup quickly moves to where it left off, moves a bit further then freezes again. If I repeat reboot about 4 or 5 times I eventually get Windows working OK.
But the last time I did this I installed Windows 2000 Server over the top of Windows 2000 Pro. Not sure this was a good idea as the MSI drivers won't load. The install program opens and does not seem to do anything.
I am inclined to format the os area of the drive and install Windows again. One of my colleagues suggested that using Windows XP Professional might resolve the problem of Windows 2000 appearing to hang when installing.
Reference material I have read a couple of Build Your Own books before starting this build but found they were a bit light on detail and out of date. There is a lot of helpful information on the Interet but I think I could do with something which would improve my knowledge. Would the latest edition of Upgrading and Repairing PCs  by Scott Mueller be a good choice? How well does it cover bios for example which I understand only superficially or would I be better (poorer financially) buying individual books on different subjects e.g. "Breaking through the Bios barrier" by Adrian Wong.
I don't plan to build PC's on a regular basis but would like to understand more than I do at present.

    Thanks for all the replies.
I will take the advice on bios and leave well alone at this stage.
Will reformat tonight and install Windows XP and see how it goes.
Couple of immediate questions. On my current PC I have 4 different boots but only really use one. My current PC has Windows 2000 Pro with 2gb, 20 gb for apps and the balance of the 80 gb drive for data. Also an 8gb drive which I hardly ever use.
Current plan on my new PC is to initially use the 160gb SATA as 20 gb combined partition for OS and apps and the balance for data. Or are there really benefits for keeping the operating system separate from apps? Using Partititon Magic fast to set up although currently it is only seeing 132 GB although the bios is correctly reporting 160GB. Presumably this is something I need to adjust in Windows once fully installed.
My 80gb drive has IBM ontrack overlay software. I managed to transfer everything to the new drive using PcAnywhere via the router. Which was great as the first time I have got two machines to talk to each other via the ADSL Router. (This was a great relief as I could not PcAnywhere to work via a serial cable!)
My inital intention was to use the 80GB as the OS / Apps drive but based on the other problems I have had, now decided to build and use the system based on a single 160 SATA drive first then when I am sure it is stable go to plan B with using the 80GB IDE drive as the Windows and Apps drive. I then need to reformat the 80GB drive as it currently has IBM Ontrack overlay software because my previous PC bios could not see 80GB otherwise. Considering at that stage installing Windows 64 bit beta on the 160GB drive.
I don't think I need Raid at this stage although I have a little bit of experience as my SQL Server has two Raid drives (0?) plus a hot swop drive stored in our fire proof safe.
I use AVG free antivirus and have the latest version ready to install.
Regarding firewall - confused as to what is required. Was under the impression that my ADSL Router has a hardware firewall. Also the motherboard has a firewall as well doesn't it? Do I also need a software firewall? There is a free one recommended on the AVG (Grisoft site)
By the way. I was a bit apprehensive when doing the build and took hours over it being very careful to read and follow the steps in motherboard, CPU and case (Antec Sonata) manuals step by step - a very slow process. All the cables in the case looked very intimidating at first.
The whole thing is extremely straightforward and towards the end everything became very logical. All the parts I used seem extremely well designed and easy to use. The only part where I had doubts was pushing down the plastic lever on the AMD retail heat sink. I wondered whether I had understood it correctly and whether it was going to snap.

  • MSI K8N neo 2 Plat System still to be Built from Scratch!!!

    Hi to all,
My first post and it's gonna be lengthy I think!
I am not a gamer ever, most of what I do is Video encoding (mainly this 100% CPU hogging activity) and Graphics manipulation.
Below is a list of what I have to start my build:
Note that I do not overclock ever so please, no reference to this!!!
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (7025)
    Athlon 64 3500+ 92nm Winchester Core (retail)
Cooler = Zalman CNPS7000B-CU Ultra-Quiet CPU Cooler (think I might have fitting probs with memory slots DIMM's 1+2(G/P) on the MSI Neo2 Plat board, DIMM's 3+4(G/P) might be my only option if I want to stick with this cooler but for fault finding purposes I can always use the stock cooler?)
    Corsair TwinXL PC3200 - CMX512-3200XLPRO 400Mhz 2.2.2.5 LL
Antec True Power 550W with SATA supply (X2)
1 X Western Digital 74Gb SATA Raptor HDD (I want this as my C: main boot, no Raid)
2 X Seagate Barracuda 300Gb 7K2rpm SATA HDD (I want these as RAID 0/stripe=performance only)
    GPU: On order!
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/vga/vga/pro_vga_detail.php?UID=636
Will use my old trustworthy and reliable GeForce 2 Ti 64 Mb card for XP+SP1 instalation only.
1 X 120 Gb 7K2 HDD (IDE 1 Master) (from old set up)
1 X 120 Gb 7k2 HDD (IDE 1 Salve) (from old set up)
    1 x  PlexWriter 52x/24x/52x CD-ReWriter (IDE 2 Master)
    1 X Pioneer DVR-108 Black16x DVD±RW Dual layer (IDE 2 Slave)
PCI = Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Value 7.1 PCI Sound Card - OEM
    Case = Lian-Li PC V1100 Black Aluminium Midi-Tower
Everthing is new in this set-up apart from my old IDE HDD's, still in boxes and ready to go ready for your input?

Straight forward if you are using one or the other methods mentioned in Tiresmokes thread Basic Building Tips(which is gr8, thnx for that Tiresmoke). But as above I want my W/D raptor as my C: main boot drive only, no RAID?
Can I use the F6 option at the XP instal and then go on to set up the Raptor drive accordingly - and from there set up my 300Gb Seagates as RAID 0 (Seagates wont be attached till Raptor is set to C: main boot)???
Once I get to this stage I will start asking about board BIOS and Driver details which I dont know as of yet, like I said everything is still boxed.
I thought personally that starting this thread - people wanting to use this board would benefit from a brand new instalation from scratch guide from a relatively newbie point of view?
I know there are alot of issues regarding the boards features, but I thought if I done this in public the relevant problems could be linked as I go along, either with problems or without - depending on the individual experience?
pheeeewww, I said it was gonna be lengthy didnt I?

    Having then got widows installed.
    Seperate project to
enable raid in bios, creating the raid & let windows install drivers later.
assuming you have an original windows cd ie pre sp1, the quickest method of installation is to slipstream windows.
Basically you download latest service pack sp1 or sp2 insert your OS cd & run a program which merges the 2 & creates a new OS cd with the SP integrated. Any updates needed then are miimal.
    see
Slipstreaming - Autostreamer Neowin - i'ts so easy i've heard grannies can do it
    hope this helps
Looks like they moved the AutoStreamer thread, and updated to 1.033---> AutoStreamer 1.0.33

  • Comp wont boot with ram in any slots besides 1&3

No idea why...have 4 of the exact same ram and i've mixed and matched so it's not the ram..if I put ram in slot 2 or 4 the comp just wont boot.
Anyone know what is causing this? Thanks in advance
Corsair xms 3200 and k8n neo2 plat btw

  • WinXP install problem (solved!), RAM problem (solved!)

Hello, this is my first post on this forum.
Yesterday I bought a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum mainboard along with an Athlon 64 3000+ Winchester.
The first problem I had was with Dual DDR. I have two sticks of double sided 512MB Kingston Value PC3200 DDR, one has Infineon chips, other has ELPIDA chips. I put them in DIMM1 & DIMM2, but the pc refused to give any display on screen, the Bracket2 showed some kind of memory error.
So I removed one stick and put in DIMM3, changing to single channel mode.
(I also tried with 2 sticks of 512MB TwinMOS PC3200 with mtech chips, no display in dual DDR mode.)
After that the machine worked. I put the XP CD and formatted using NTFS. While XP was copying the first set of files to the disk, I got random file errors, telling me that the files in the harddisk are not in correct format.
Some time later I managed to install the files without any errors, but after the first reboot, I get a "Error loading operating system" or "Missing operating system" error. I tried everything I could find on this forum, from BIOS settings to removing 1 mem stick from the mobo, fixmbr, removed other drives etc. I also updated the BIOS to 1.4.
I spent 2 days trying to install Windows XP, but I can't seem to manage it.
I have a 200GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 Plus PATA drive, which used to work with my old nForce2 Ultra mobo.
I checked the device table at system startup, it shows the drive as LRG, ATA 100, 200GB. My other drive is shown as LBA, ATA 100, 80GB. Would this LRG - LBA difference cause any problems?
The weirdest thing is, I have an older 20GB Quantum disk, I first tried using NTFS on it, I got the same boot errors, then I created a 4GB partition and formatted it using FAT32. Windows installed with no problems and right now I'm writing this message from the FAT32 formatted PC.
To sum my problem, I can't use Dual DDR and I wanted to know if this is a common problem (black screen). And I can't install Windows XP on my NTFS formatted drives ("missing operating system", "error loading operating system").
I'm really not used to have so many problems related to motherboards.

    1)Quote
I get a "Error loading operating system" or "Missing operating system" error
    - usually occurs when there's a non os hd in front of the system disk in the boot sequence. The default order of drive recognition is ide , sata. The bios offers a way to customise this in Advanced Bios Settings - HD Boot Order -
In this screen you should see all your Hard drives. the drive you want to boot from should be moved to the top of this list, select the drive & move it using the page up/down keys.
    2) what hdrives did you have plugged in when you installed windows originnaly
if you choose a hard drive that is lower down the drive sequence windows will install to the selected drive but will write the boot sector to the 1st drive. you can usually tell if this happens as your windows drive won't be C;\ . Best way round this is to disconnect any drives in front of the one you want unytil after windows is installed. then re-connecting.
You can check wether this is gioing to happen, with all drives connected, by entering bios Standard bios features and checking the disk order, disconnect any drives b4 the 1 you want the os on.
    3) You can download & run Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool this is a diagnostic tool that you can ,install on a floppy or cd , it will test your memory & report any errors. More info is on web site. Memory errors could have caused some of your problems. it's best to check a module at a time in slot 1.
if error free run test with both modules slot 1 & 2.
Dual channel will also not run well if the pair of modules used have different timings on the spd memory chips. download Everest, it's a good utility but specically can help provide details of your mamory. with all dram settings on auto check the Memory chipset tab to see your memory timings on auto these are from the SPD so you can identify any differences. put 1 module at a time in slot1 to get the data for your modules.
If you do find different timings manually change the dram settings in bios to that of the slowest module. This may enable you to run dual channel in slots 1& 2,
Most pps with your mobo have stability probs trying to run 2 modules in slots 1 & 3
    4) With these mobos the forum has found that a 12v supply of 24Amps is needed to ensure good stability Basic Building Tips    Quote
Typically we have noted many issues based on stability with PSU's being rated at less than 24A on the 12v rail.
Your zalman as far as i can see on the website only gives 18amps, again this can give stability issues.
    5) NTFS & XP go together like a horse & cart. when installing xp its best to get a coffee & not take the quick format option as the quick format will not isolate or correct any disk errors. Again these errors may be as aresult of memory, disk order power or any combination of the 3.
    hope this helps

  • Good review on PS, installed it and didnt work :(

So I ordered a MGE XG Vigor 500 500W Power Supply - read some decent reviews and I though for the money why not.  Well I got it along with all my new PC parts, installed it and nothing.  So, I swapped it out with my real 350 that came with my cavalier coolermaster case and they power supply worked.  I ordered another one - lets see what happens....but I am sorta leary about it - has anyone used MGE power supplies?  Its nice, its got 120 fan (and another but both blue neon), adjustable fan speed which I liked, sleved cables, and it ran really quiet - just wouldnt boot   I sent it back and ordered another - hope it was just a dud, there really isnt much to miss when installing a PS.

As this pertains to A64's make sure that you have a power supply that is either approved for use by MSI/AMD or that you have plenty of amps on the 12 volt rail. Typically we have noted many issues based on stability with PSU's being rated at less than 24A on the 12v rail.
This was wtitten with respect to the Nforce3 boards this requirement has certainly not gone down with the Nforce4 boards.
So given your figures I really can't say it's a good choice.

  • Boot failure - k8n neo2 plat

    Hi, I'm having trouble
Just purchased an MSI k8n neo2 plat mobo with an amd 64 3000+ and finally got her all setup... well minus the geforce 6600 gt arriving tomorrow and I still need to figure out what I'll do as far as memory goes. Ah but I forget myself... the problem at hand is this; I am unable to boot the system and the d-bracket indicates its current status is "Processor initialization..." Then nothing. Blank screen.

  • Random shutdowns...need help

They only seem to happen when im playing games. I suspected the powersupply but according to this caluclator http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/ I should have plenty of power. I cannot turn the computer back on unless I unplug/replug the powercable back in.

COOLMAX 400W PSU that I got from newegg. Supposed to be good
    http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=17-159-023&depa=0
The powercable im using is one i salvaged from an old computer which is a few years old... but powercables should all be the same right?
I read in another thread that I need a 20A powersupply. I think this PSU does that but the powercable reads 10A/125V, is that the culprit?

Ive looked at the antec site Model: True330 if this is your model 12v/22A will probably do.
However I think Antec have recently updated the true power range with a stronger 12v in this case 22a

    Mount the battery .
Connect AC to the PSU .

Dont use F1 but hit "del" key

Hello, I know this title might be familiar but I can' t get this to work.  I am using a 420W Raidmax Power Suply with 13A on the 12V rail with the MSI Neo2 Plat.  When I switch the powersupply switch to on the fans all start up and I try to shut down with front case button and it won't turn off.  I also have tried shorting the pins on the motherboard in case the power button was bad.  I am also using an AMD 3200 winchester, thermalright xp-90 and a gig of patriot ram.  The error led arrangement is Amber, Red, Red, Amber.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • New Build - Looking for Tips

So I have purchased the components listed in my Sig and getting ready to set everything up, just wanting to get some tips/advice on the best way to go about it.
My biggest question is concerning RAID, as this is the first time I have set one up. Any tips, guides, etc. on how best to accomplish this on my MB is appreciated. I am wanting to end up with a 1TB RAID 1+0 (4 500GB drives paired up, both pairs RAID 1, then one pair RAID 0 of the other pair). Am I correct in assuming it is best to plug only 2 in (SATA 1&2) setup the RAID 1 on those, then plug the other 2 in (SATA 3&4) and set those up as RAID 1, then tie everything together as with RAID 0? Or can I plug them all in and do it all at once? The instructions look fairly straight forward, just looking for some clarity and actual user input.
Do I need to update my BIOS? I haven't tried booting at all, so not sure what I am starting with, but I notice in the CPU compatibility the same CPU I have lists Version 10.4. Should I stick with what I have and only upgrade if I am having issues, or should I upgrade from the start.
I have a SATA Blu-Ray burner, and have seen a few things mentioning a SATA ODD coming up under RAID configurations. Is this an issue, is there a certain SATA port I should use to avoid this, certain settings I need to pay attention to, or does it matter?
Regarding memory, I read (in a sticky) that fewer memory sticks result in faster performance due to Dual Channels. I was under the impression that if all 4 slots were filled you would have 2 groups, each using Dual Channel. Am I incorrect in that? If faster performance (MHz-wise) is achieved by only using 2 sticks, will I get better overall results by removing 2 sticks (leaving only 4GB) or will the additional memory compensate for the speed loss? (The RAM is rated as being Dual Channel, if that makes a difference).
Does anyone have any general computer building tips? I have built a number of them before, but would like some input on the best/most efficient/fewest problems way is. All previous builds have been done with default configurations, if anyone has suggestions for some settings that they recommend those are welcome. I will be over-clocking at some point, depending on how things go and if there is any advantage to doing so from the start or waiting until the system is setup. I did notice this MB has a OC center as well as the Easy OC Switch. Any input or thoughts on those?
To sum it up, I am looking for as much input on getting everything set up as easily as possible, with the best settings without requiring a lot of adjustments. Any and all input is appreciated!

Windows rating is rather silly, it's not the sum of the system but rather the slowest part that gives you this rating.
Yeah, I agree with the silliness of Windows final rating, however I do like to use the individual ratings as a sort of benchmark. The issue isn't the final rating, it the rating I am receiving for my processor, which is 4.1, and is the lowest rating on there.
    From memory -
    Processor - 4.1
    RAM - 4.9
    Graphics - 7.4
    Gaming - 7.1
    HD - 5.9
As a comparison, another computer with a 2.2GHz quad core processor, 4GB RAM, and single drive rates as follows:
    Processor - 6.9
    RAM - 7.2
    Graphics - 4.8
    Gaming - 6.1
    HD - 5.9
With the components I have vs the comparison computer, I would expect CPU, RAM, and HD to all be higher, but they are lower or the same! So something somewhere is not right in my opinion.
    Thanks for any feedback!
