Basic export for tablets/smartphones

Hi - I'm looking at options for publishing the content of an A4 magazine produced in InDesign for people with iPads, Android phones etc. At this point all I want to do is just export the basic elements - headline and body copy (and one or two other elements such as boxes and maybe a diagram) from articles and publishing them under a standard banner. I'm guessing the main options are either producing a file or app of some sort or producing a web page for each article that people link to when we email them the contents.
If anyone can advise on the least painful and fairly low cost way to do this I would be grateful.
S.

For iPad, I think, the easiest way is to create folios with this script. I created a similar script (based on it) for 7" devices.
Another way is exporting to ePub: you can select the elements you want to export and define their order in the “Articles” panel. Then you can fine tune the exported ePub, say, in Dreamweaver. If your magazine has a complex layout and you want to keep it (as much as possible), you may export it to “fixed layout” ePub with Rorohiko's ePubCrawler (it’s free).

  • EFT for tablets

    Hello,
Can anyone tell me with the EFT is for a tablet? Do they consider it the same amount as a smartphone?
    Thanks

bowsup, we're happy to help! The early termination fee for tablets would start at $175.00 when first starting the initial contract. This charge would decrease by $5.00 each month of the contract that is completed.

  • Exporting for DVD - exported video plays too fast

    Hello helpful people!
I'm fairly new to Premiere - but familiar with Final Cut. Using Adobe Premiere Pro CC v8.1 on a MAC.  I have a video that was shot in 1080p, and I picked sequence settings to match (or so I think).
The video looks great in Premiere, and I need to create DVDs to send to the UK (I'm American), and they will have to be able to play in a standard dvd player over there. My understanding is that PAL would be the wiser choice for encoding. I'm trying to keep the export simple, and I've exported it multiple times using both PAL and NTSC, and while the audio files are fine - for both PAL & NTSC the video files are significantly shorter than the actual film, and plays in a sort of fast-forward effect. In Premiere, the film plays at 17 minutes, but when I open the exported .m2v files they are only playing at 14:33, - or one that I finally (somehow) got up to 15:00 minutes. That 15 minute one I got from not tweaking the settings at all - on the previous ones, I had read somewhere to increase the bit rate and use VBR Pass 2 for better results. However 2 minutes off is still a big problem.
Below are screenshots of the sequence settings, and the most basic export settings I've used - example of the NTSC.
Any help is hugely appreciated! Thanks

I personally consider QuickTime the bane of video production whose use needs to vanish from the landscape quickly and permanently.  Give VLC a try instead.
VideoLAN - Official page for VLC media player, the Open Source video framework!
I say just go ahead and author the disk.  Chances are good it'll work correctly.

  • CS3 XDCam export for FCP

Currently running CS3 PP on PC.  Shooting xdcam that creates .mp4 files.  We have Matrox boards so editng in PP with 720p 60fps natively is no problem, no rendering with project settings set up properly.  Editing 2 to 3 and half minute features that need to be exported for use with FCP for broadcast in a production truck.  MOV files as quicktime makes the most sense, but what codec and how to create the best looking 720p HD feature while not giving the producer a huge file.  I've been told by him that a minute of HD video should be around 1 gig.  Do I need a third party (Sorenson, etc.) to create properly or use Adobe Media Encoder.  Or should I export as a movie.
Really looking forward to getting some opinions and help on this.  Thanks!
    Tom

You could ask the guys using FCP what codec(s) they like...thats your best bet.
My producer for this project is not the "easiest" to deal with if you get my drift so to speak, won't give simple answers or take the time to figure it out and move on, so I'm left to figure it out for him.  He's never wrong
you could try tests of small segments of your timeline ...using QT ( mov ) using jpeg 2000, animation ( RLE ? ) and UT YUL2 422 ( what renderer are you using for the project in premiere ? )..  these would make large files, probably have to deliver via external HD.
Trying to keep files size small, playing out of his mac book and outputing in the production truck
Basically fcp likes pro res 422 type stuff..I would ask those guys using FCP what would work best for them.
pro ress 422 is not a codec that cs3 pp has as an option.  I did watch the producer use streamclip third party converter to get it to play out and it looked great during last night's broadcast here in Florida.  I think he said export as apple dv/dvcpro - ntsc, 1280x720 (HDTV 720p) and that worked for him.  When I bring that file into my project storyboard it is 16x9 but not scaled to my project specs.
Thanks for your input, great to get my first reply in the forum!  Just recently joined after owning our system since Jan. 2009.

  • FCP export for ATV with chapters

Hi, I have about an hour of PAL DV edited content in FCP 6, with about 10 chapter points. I've created my DVD and now I want to keep a copy for Apple TV with chapter points included. Can anyone advise which way to do this, as I've tried some options using QT export/convert and Compressor etc. but all unsatisfactory. When I get a good quality ATV export it doesn't have the chapters included. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.
    Chris

Yes, I can see them ok and have managed to export in various formats with them intact. My problem is more to do with knowing the right settings/codec to export for Apple TV but with the chapters in there still. I've got good looking ATV compliant exports, and I've got various formats with the chapters in, but not both. It would seem like a really basic thing to want to do, but seems really elusive (unless I'm being dumb!). I actually started out in iMovie as it's a family video and pretty basic edits etc. but iMovie can't do this either
    Thanks, chris

  • A Suggestion to Verizon for better Smartphone cust. service re: updates

With all the angst and concern customers have over software updates (not just a WP7 issue - also Android, MeeGo etc - just not iOS), why not look at a simple and effective way to communicate the status and keep your customers happy.  You don't need to make wild promises, break NDA's or worry about being held to ransom...just deliver some better customer engagement:
All you need to do is put up a SINGLE page for your Smartphone devices (WP7 included) and maintain a quick and easy 1-stop location for all the Software Updates being managed by Verizon.
    Example from Aus Carrier:
So create the Update Table....listing Device / OS / Update version no. then...(examples based on WP7)
    1. When an update is announced by an OEM or (more likely) Microsoft - please add it straight to the page!
    2. Even just showing you are aware of it helps us (eg there are 2 updates post mango min.)
    3. Use the version numbers that line up with the MS Update history - eg 7740 or 8107.
    4. Then add a status for them, suggestions being:
         - Update XXXX - Not yet received from MS/OEM
         - Update XXXX - Received from MS/OEM - not yet in test.
         - Update XXXX - In Network testing.
         - Update XXXX - Not Approved - awaiting MS/OEM amendment.
         - Update XXXX - Approved, Scheduling Deployment
         - Update XXXX - Deployed (this should be staged over X period to all users, check via Zune PC client).
Bam! There you go - not to hard to manage, and deploy this for heaps of kudos and improved customer satisfaction!
    Cheers,
    Sheeds.

Some will tell you that Verizon is the worst when it comes to phone updates.  Others will tell you that they are conservative and cautious - and that this is the best policy.
Frequently, Verizon likes to have "OEM" hardware made "not so original".  This was a problem with Motorola in the past and a few other OEM manufacturers sold by Verizon.  Online manufacturer updates would brick a Verizon phone, because there were some minor differences from phone to phone.
I just went through this exercise with Verizon and BlackBerry for several years.  In 4 out of 5 RIM updates - it would take Verizon close to 6 months to release the update that was advertised on the RIM Website 6 months prior.  This led to many visits to the CrackBerry Website where you could either download the update, remove a file, and load it to your phone at any time - regardless of whether it was a Verizon phone, or Sprint, or AT&T.  There were also many times you could pick up a version update prior to even RIM hosting them!  That was until RIM decided to make their tablet and stopped updating their phones!  THAT was a good idea?
One of the things that allowed a BlackBerry User to load these upgrades with confidence was the simple fact that every upgrade - regardless of where you got it from, would call for a backup prior to switching phone versions.  WP7 kinda does this now, but WP7 really needs backup on demand in a big way.
One of the BlackBerry drawbacks was that Verizon Technical Support would not support a phone if the OS version was higher than the one they were offering customers..  I had to call ** on that because any time you called Verizon BlackBerry Support, they would always tell you to reload the original OS anyway when they could not figure out how to fix a problem.  The version you were running at the time really had nothing to do with getting your phone fixed.  I also found that after a few months of use - it was pretty easy to troubleshoot problems.  And for those problems that were unique - you could always hit a BlackBerry forum for advice.
Updates, upgrades, who delivers them, who supports them, etc. is always very sticky.  It's even more sticky with a new OS as everyone wants feature improvements ASAP.  Microsoft typically delivers some pretty clean updates to things like Windows, Office, hardware drivers, etc..  It may be easier to bark at MS about OTA or Website updates - rather than Verizon.  Verizon has always been slow to release updates, regardless of phone and/or OS platform.  I don't see that changing anytime soon and I REALLY don't see them changing their policies for just 1 model or type of phone either.

  • Font - Export for ActionScript

    Hello,
When I add a font to the library, export it for ActionScript and select Bitmap text what is that doing exactly ? I am never able to reproduce that font in Photoshop, Notepad or any other program, the one my SWF displays is always a little different.

Does anyone know what exactly happens when you click 'export for actionscript' on a Font Symbol? I suspect it changes the textfield from unicode to latin-1. Since I lose typical unicode characters while basic latin onces work fine. Anyone how knows for sure or can direct me to some documentation about it?

  • QT Useful Basic Export Settings?

OK, I know I'm fairly new to all this mullarky so apologies for the blindingly obvious post but what I could really do with right now (apart from another beer) is some BASIC settings for exporting a PAL timetine to a self-contained PAL movie. Actually i don't quite know whether that's the correct name but at the moment I've a shed load of clips all in the right order on the timeline and i'd like to have just one IDENTICAL FORMAT file available. Is there a basic set of settings I can apply when "exporting using quicktime conversion" which will give me the same resolution and size - there's just too many options at the mo and my brain hurts!! (also I've run out of beer...) R.L. xx

    redlobster
there must be another beer somewhere ... have you tried behind the sofa or any other of those places that people hide their beer at a party?
on the fcp export front, use File > Export > Quicktime Movie... (not Conversion)
in trhe QT Movie export window, give it a name and point it somewhere on your disc ... keep the settings as "Current Settings"
now, if you want a standalone file that you can give to someone else and/or use after all the original media files have been deleted, then you must also check the box labelled "Make movie self-contained" (but don't recompress all frames)
if you don't check that box then it will only create a "reference" movie, which will look and feel just like a normal one, but actually is just pointers to the original media (so if you then delete the original files it won't work anymore)
    hope it helps

  • Can not remove second line in Jabber for Tablet device on CUCM

    Hi all,
The functionality we are trying to achieve is that people will have different DNs for their desk phones and Jabber for iPad devices, but when they make a call from the iPad, the desk phone DN will be shown. I have been testing out the Primary extension feature in the CUCM but it doesn't work properly so far. And now, I added two different DNs to a Jabber for Tablet device and can not remove the second one from 'Modify button items'. It gives the following error :
    Update failed. TypeDbErrors.gen25083
Any ideas on how to fix this? Any ideas on how to use the primary extension feature?
    Regards,
    Fikri
    Enironment :
    CUCM 8.6.2
Jabber for iPad 9.3.2 / Jabber for iOS 9.6

I would delete the device and recreate it or delete the DN and then put it back on the device(s) it does belong on. The only real way to fix this would a TAC case so they can open a defect for you.
Primary Extension isn't used in any of the alerting/connected display states. The only way to achieve this would be a lot of very complicated translation patterns/partitions/CSSes with calling party transformations on them. For example, if your desk phone DN was 2000 but the tablet DN was 3000, the translation pattern that would need to match for every number you dial would have to transform the calling party to 2XXX.
If you want an opinion, this is bad design. You don't email a person at a separate address for their desktop vs. their smartphone. CUCM is designed to work the same way: you are calling a user, not the device.

  • IMovie 6 Chapter Export for Apple TV

Ok, this is driving me crazy. All I want to do is export my iMovie 6 edit in a reasonably high quality export (for archive and Apple TV) WITH my chapter points preserved. I've already made a DVD so I just want the video file, but with basic interactivity, i.e. 11 chapter points over a hour of edited footage. Is there a workaround for this, for example exporting to FCP and then Compressor. TIA, chris

All I want to do is export my iMovie 6 edit in a reasonably high quality export (for archive and Apple TV) WITH my chapter points preserved... Is there a workaround for this, for example exporting to FCP and then Compressor.
If the Compressor application is a resonably current version, simply drop the chaptered iMovie HD v6 timeline (i.e., the "Shared > iDVD" file) to Compressor, select the appropriate device preset, and Compressor will do the rest.

  • HDV Aspect Ratio and Exporting For the Web

    INTRODUCTION
I am trying to export an HDV video for the first time and have managed to confuse myself. I want to upload it to blip.tv and they transcoded videos into Flash with 4:3 aspect ratio. But more than that, I want to understand how this all works so I don't have to guess about the settings that will give me what I want.
    BACKGROUND DATA
    4/3 is 1.333...
    16/9 is 1.777...
1440/1080 is 1.333... (if the pixels are square)
1920/1080 is 1.777... (if the pixels are square)
In FCP my clip format says:
    Frame Size: 1440 x 1080
Pixel Aspect: HD (1440 x 1080) (Does this mean the pixels are 1.333... times wider than it is high?)
    EXPORT USING QUICKTIME CONVERSION
When I go to export this clip using Quicktime Conversion under the Options... Size... dialog and look at the Dimensions dropdown, (I assume this is the dimensions of the exported video. Is that correct?)
Some of the settings are (the settings are in quotes, my notes are in parentheses.):
    "HD 1440 x 1080 16:9" (if pixels are square this is 4/3)
    "HD 1920 X 1080 16:9" (if pixels are square this is 16/9)
So both of these settings claim to be 16:9 but they both can't be true unless they have different pixel aspect ratios (which I find hard to believe). This makes me think I don't really know what they mean when they notate something as 16:9. Can anyone give a definition that will help me here?
    EXPORTING FOR THE WEB
Using FCS2, what settings should I use to export this clip undistorted for the web (with letterbox if needed)?
    Thanks for the help,
    Rob:-]

What I find with HDV 16x9 1440x1080 footage, is that when you output for the web you have to hard code the size you want the result to be. 320x180 or 640x360 for example scale things nicely. If you want bigger, just do the math.
I don't know why but whenever I select a predefined output size, it always screws it up (I don't work with 4:3 ever, so I'm speaking only of 16x9). So I always enter the size I want.
And as far as Compressor 3, I really can't get that to set the size I want correctly either. Mostly its due to me being lazy and not wanting to spend a year reading the Compressor manual. A package that should basically have the easiest interface known to man is now so complicated that unless I have to hand-holding tutorial, or get to drag/drop one of their presets, I end up screwing things up with it. Not to mention that you get to wait for hours just to see how you screwed up the settings of your output.

  • Converting a website to Tablet-Smartphone site

    Hi Everyone,
I'm about to get strated with Muse and have a question.  Once I complete a website in Muse, can I convert it to a site for tablets and smartphones, or do I need to build an entirely new site for these devices?  I have not found the answer to this question yet.  The website will be fairly labor intensive and if I need to build it twice it's going to ba a LOT of work!
    Thank you,

    Hi Bret
You can create all 3 layouts in Muse itself , while you create Desktop version you can copy site plan, page attributes , browser fill and then create the items specifically for different versions of the site.

  • Stylus for Tablets.. How about use on Cellphones as Well

I wanted to ask a Question i hope it doesn't come Over as Dumb one but here it Goes i want to Get a Stylus for My Droid X an my Razr Maxx i found one at Office Maxx. It's made by Targus i want to use it. As some times it's hard to hit those little Keys when Texting. Here's look at it.
Targus Stylus for Tablets- Green ,
The Targus Stylus for Apple iPad makes it easy to take notes, draw or simply turn a page. The stylus features a durable rubber tip that won't scratch the iPad's surface and allows the user to type accurately and comfortably. The stylus engages directly with your electronic, touch-screen device, requires no power or software to operate and instantly works right out of the box. Featuring a vibrant blue color to match the Apple iPad Smart Cover, this accessory is both stylish and convenient for daily use.

I don't think it's a dumb question! I used a stylus for years on my Palm Treos. At times it could be very handy. Then out came iPhones and Androids, and oh, a stylus is too crude and backward for these slick devices! (Oops, too sarcastic. )
But check this:  http://pocketnow.com/android/samsung-announces-galaxy-note-smartphone-the-stylus-is-back . Everything old is new again, I guess.
I think the stylus is a personal preference. Some people like 'em and some hate 'em. If you want one and it works for you, go for it! But you should definitely try it out to see if it actually works on your phone before buying.
And for some light reading from an anti-stylus point of view: http://www.extremetech.com/computing/98923-how-steve-jobs-killed-the-stylus-and-made-smartphones-usable
