Basic font style question

Generally, would you characterize serif fonts as more traditional, and sans serif fonts as more contemporary?
Thanks.

Too general a question and too broad a generalization.
Get a book (or a few) on typography. There are oldstyle and modern typefaces in both serif and sans-serif.

  • Questions about Spark DataGrid (Header Font Styles, Header Gradient)

    Just starting out in 4.5 SDK, and just a tad confused on the Spark DataGrid.
    1) Trying to set the font style for just the header, but don't see those properties in the designer....as they appear to apply to every part of the DataGrid.
    2) Want to set a linear gradient for the header utilizing two specific colors, alphas and ratios.  Not sure where to set them now.
    I think that is it for now.  From what I have done with it so far, I love it....just obviously not as much user documentation as the MX DataGrid.
    Thanks in advance!
    Bill

    You can do per column header renderers by setting the headerRenderer property on the column. But if you want to swap out all the headers, the header renderer has to be specified in the skin. One neat trick you can do is subclass the DataGridSkin and replace the "headerRenderer" declaration. This also works with the other skin parts.
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <skins:DataGridSkin xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
                    xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
                    xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx"
                    xmlns:skins="spark.skins.spark.*">
        <fx:Declarations>
            <!-- See DataGridSkin for other possible parts -->
            <fx:Component id="headerRenderer">
                <s:CustomGridHeaderRenderer />
            </fx:Component>
        </fx:Declarations>

  • Is there a way to apply all the font styles before importing the file

    Hi,
    I've some text as below in a text file that needs to be imported into InDesign.
    "Law of Civil Procedures"
    And in InDesign this is to be made bold. I want to know if there is a way to make it bold directly and then import it into InDesign, I'm asking this as I have approximately 200 pages that needed with all the font styles applied. This would be very helpful if i can first apply the font styles and then import it into InDesign.

    Hi Salah,
    Thanks for your Answer. I'm completely new to indesign, i'm basically an XSLT Developer. My question in brief is as below.
    We have to make books in InDesign, and the content we receive would be in XML Format and also an RTF file is given with same content, what we do currently is copy and paste the text in InDesign document and start formatting te content accordingly. But we are having huge volumes like more than 6000 pages and similarly we are having 8-12 vilumes, i want to know if we can get the styles directly in InDesign and start working on  them.
    For eg: we have the below content
    <para style="left"><num style="bold">1(1)</num>   <b>[Short title and commencement]</b></para>
    Here there should be a para created and the number should be bold. I'm really unable to understand how to do it. please help me with this. And also our vendors need the IDML file along with the PDF. please let me know how i can do this.
    Also please suggest me some good tutorials regarding this.
    Thanks.

    Your question really belongs in the AppleWorks community/forum.
    You can turn on fonts in actual type in the AppleWorks preferences.

  • [Basic Paragraph] style behaviour upon copy/paste

    Hi,
    we just get started changing from Quark to InDesign, and our lead layout-producer is not so crazy about style sheets, so everything she creates is using the [Basic Paragraph] Style.
    A by her created libary now contains groups of text objects in Basic Paragraph with format changes +
    When I use these groups, or copy and paste from another document, why does InDesign keep the changes like fontsize or -color, but does change the font?
    My basic paragraph does use another font, so its quite annoying INDD keep the changes, but keep change the font.
    What can I do to prevent INDD from changing the font?

    So, i made this beauuutiful thingy for a test. It looks disgusting, i know. The point is that it uses 4 fonts and different modifications.
    If I get you right, to prepare a "good" document, our layout-producer should clogg our documents with different paragraph-styles not to use the Basic? Sure, she can convert it into paths, but different collegues have to translate this stuff later so that isnt an option.
    Maybe she can "design" things like that in Illu, giving us an AI to use.
    I made an irritating discovery:
    As I built this thing with Futura as my Basicparagraph-font, i dragged it into a libary, closed every doc to change my default-paragraph-style to another font to see what happens. I set up a empty doc and dragged it back in again – no changes at all. I was surprised. Its in the basic, it has a +, and if i click on basic it changes to GillSans, if i alt+click the modifications (like the colors) turn to black… – this is what i was looking for :-)
    But why with my other test-object. Im nearly in closing time here, so i will upload an image tomorrow, but the only variable that haved changed to my second try minutes ago:
    – the objects were converted using Q2ID (Markzware)
    – the group just contained one (but another) font
    Maybe theres the problem somewhere.

  • Unable to search for font style Italic

    In InDesign's Find/Change dialog, I click on the Find Format magnifying glass to open the Find Format Settings dialog. I click on the Basic Character Formats tab, and in the Font Style field I select 'Italic' from the dropdown menu. When I release the mouse button, the field displays 'Regular', not 'Italic'. If I key the word 'Italic' in the field, the same thing happens. The only way I've been able to get around this is to specify the Font Family as well, but I want to search for Italic Font Style regardless of the Font Family (there are several in the document). I haven't specified any other search details in either the Find/Change dialog or the Find Format Settings dialog. I'm currently using CS5.5 but I've experienced this problem dozens of times in both CS4 and CS5.5. I have a vague recollection of occasionally being able to do it, but if so it's been very rare.
    Is there a reason why this is happening? Is there any way to search for Italic Font Style regardless of Font Family?

    I'm on Mac OS 10.6.8.
    Thanks for the script, it worked fine, but on top of that it inadvertently revealed what is going on with this issue.
    When I ran the script, the Find Format field in the Find/Change dialog showed '+Italic'. However, when I went into the Find Format Settings dialog, the Font Style field said 'Regular'. When I exited the Find Format Settings dialog, the Find Format field still said '+Italic'. The Find process worked fine, that is, it found text formatted as Italic.
    I then went back to what I was originally doing, without using the script, and exactly the same thing happened. The two fields didn't match up, but the Find operation worked fine.
    I'm currently working in CS5.5, but as I recently purchased CS6, I tried it in that program and exactly the same thing happened. And just to confirm my recollection, I tried it in CS4 and it happened there too.
    I realise also why it has occasionally worked OK. Sometimes I would have entered Italic in the Font Style field and immediately clicked OK to exit the Find Format Settings dialog, and I wouldn't have noticed anything wrong. But once I got used to the problem, I started to make a habit of tabbing out of the Font Style field 'just to make sure'. I would have seen it revert to Regular, and I would have just given up and (unnecessarily) worked my way through the font families one by one.
    Anyway, now that I know what's going on, it's not a problem at all, but it's odd that it's persisted through at least three versions of InDesign. Thanks, Jongware, for your help.
    Does this happen on Windows? Has anyone else on a Mac experienced this strange behaviour?

  • CSS font style in main template. How to remove or change...

    Hi, made a boo boo the other day while messing with my spry menu bar from the main template. I was trying to change the font size on the sub-menu as the drop down had gone off the page. I was fooling around with it and inadvertantly changed/added several styles that were already being used on other pages throughout the site. For instance "style 19" used to be 24 pixels high and not in the main template. (right under spry assets styles.) Now it's there and every page that used this style is now showing VERY LARGE font as I somehow changed it to 113pixels. (type-o that I didn't realize was being saved and changing a style.)
    If that made sense to anyone, what do I do now? Do I go to the main template and change the size to what I know they should be then update all the pages, leaving "redundant tags". Do I delete the style altogeter from the main template?..not sure what that would do.
    and last, once I finally get it right, how do I upload these changes. Putting the main teimplate, css style sheet? Spry menu? all?
    Thanks SO MUCH
    Miserable in D.W. land today!

    Thanks, will be working on it today. That's what I needed to know. It sucks when you don't know what your'e
    doing and you can't speak intelligently to someone who does. So thanks for the layman's answer this time.
    What I can do is actually go back to the page in question, and I can see the "old" style 18 and what the size should be, then see the new one. So I will be able to tell what the old size was. These styles affected are mainly for colored font/names under our caddy girls. Each one might have her name in size 24 pixel font, in a different color depending on the page design. Long story short, is all the fonts that were 18 or 19 are now wrong..  and some other styles have been messed up as well
    Maybe you can help me with this one too? On 3 or 4 font styles I must have been playing with the spry menu bar and adjusting the size not realizing I was in percentage mode and not pixels. By the time I figured it out I had changed 4 styles to 12 and 13 %. So the font is tiny in D.W. Would I just delete these altogether, or change these to what pixel size they should be? Even though it will create a redundant font tag. (which I'm not too concerned about unless I need to be.) Or should I change them to 100%?
    Hope you can make sense of the above. I REALLY appreciate it. Was going to make the font on "really" very big but my days of messing with fonts are over!!!!
    Thanks,
    ken

  • How do I change font style in Illustrator CS3?

    I am working on an EPS in CS3 and have three simple lines of text for which I would like to change the font style. How do I do that? I've highlighted the text using Arrow and/or "T" tools, and then selected different font styles from Type>Font...but nothing happens. Any simple suggestions for what I would hope is a simple issue? Thanks.

    Scott Falkner, your answer was correct. The letters are outlined, not solid black. A new tool appears that looks like a magic wand, and it does allow me to select the outlined letters. However, font changes have no effect, which makes sense if the program does not recognize these as text any longer.
    To answer your subsequent question, in my version of the software, a toolbar appears on the left (likely default, as I have never configured a special setting) that shows a black arrow in the upper left defined in the rollover as "Selection Tool (V)," and the second line below to the right shows a "T" defined as "Type Tool (T)." Those are the two tools I was using to select what I thought was the copy.
    Thanks everyone for your replies.
    FYI Scott Falkner: although I tried to mark your answer "Correct," I got an "Unexpected error has occured " from the Adobe forum Web site, so your answer was marked "helpful" instead, which did not create an error.

  • FAQ: How do I clear out my font cache to fix font style and duplicate font style issues?

    We have a Script availabe for CS6 beta users who are experiencing particular font related issues.
    This script will help by clearing the font cache and will test for corrupted fonts.
    This will solve some of the type issues with duplicate font names and some of the other font errors.
    This script is to help to find corrupted fonts. The script itself doesn’t solve the problem.
    This script doesn’t solve duplicate font name, but clears out your font cach .  It it will solve some duplicate font style name issues such as the one  in the link below.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4306828#4306828
    There is a pdf file explaining how to use the script and what it will do.
    See attached files.

    Monica, I know the Normal Character Style in Illustrator must be defined. But my question is about the Normal Paragraph Style, not the Normal Character Style. As Larry just said, in most of my documents, and in my New Document Profiles, these fields in the Normal Paragraph Style are blank (undefined), so I know this is possible. In a few older documents I'm converting, the Normal Paragraph Style has a defunct font, and even though my Normal Character Style is correctly defined with the current font, it's creating some weird behavior.
    Larry, it doesn't appear to be the document itself, it just appears to be not knowing what the right keystroke combo is to clear it. Just make a new file from a Document Profile where the Normal Paragraph Style does not define one of those font fields, define a font and/or font size, save, then reopen the paragraph style settings and try to clear any field that has been set. I can't clear it, I can only change the font.

  • Why are some font styles not available in the Typewriter function?

    I would like to use Arial Narrow Bold, however it is not listed. I do have this font style in C:\Window\Fonts but it does not show up when I use they typewriter function. I am able to use this font style in Adobe when in the forms field. Is there a way to update the fonts available for the Typewriter?
    Thanks for any advice!

    I don't have a good answer other than the typewriter functionality was for basic typing, not for fancy topography work. For the latter, you should go back to the original document and do it with a tool designed for that purpose.

  • Setting the font style of a TitleWindow or Panel w/o creating a skin?

    N00b question - Is it possible to set the font style of a TitleWindow or Panel header/label with out creating a custom skin? Looking for a simple way and I can find one in the docs.
    Thanks in advance

    Yes, using advanced css to style the specific title label in the skin:
        <fx:Style>
            @namespace s "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark";
            @namespace mx "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx";
            s|Panel #titleDisplay
                fontStyle: italic
        </fx:Style>
        <s:Panel title="hello" />

  • Font style values

    I'm trying to develop an applet which changes a font, which is based on a list of drop-down font styles: PLAIN, BOLD, ITALIC. The values for these are stored in an int array.
    Does anybody know what the integer values are for the main 3 styles (PLAIN, BOLD, ITALIC) e.g. Does Font.PLAIN = 0, etc..?
    Cheers
    Dave

    int plainStyle = java.awt.Font.PLAIN;
    int boldStyle = java.awt.Font.BOLD;
    int italicStyle = java.awt.Font.ITALIC;

    Is there a way to show the font styles in the drop down box? It wastes a LOT of time having to click on each font to see how it appears, then having to go to repeat the process again and again to locate a font I want to use.

  • How to discover all available font styles for a given family?

    I'm using InDesign CS3 and need to discover all of the available styles for any given font. I've found Application.Fonts.itemByName(), but this only returns a single font by the full name. Using ExtentScript in CS3 How can I ask for ALL font styles for any given font family (as displayed in the styles drop-down?)
    Thanks!

    hey,
    I was just searching the web trying to find why this piece of code:
    for (var i = 0; i <app.fonts.length;i++) {
         app.fonts[i]..... some other code
    take 4+ minutes to execute.
    app.fonts.everyItem().getElements(); did the trick, sweet!!
    However, I would like to ask you whether you know if there is some handout or some guide (possibly online page) for such advanced scripting...
    or how did you find this solution?
    thank you very much for this post, anyway
    regards
