Basic importing/exporting question

I have been creating web videos for some time for a few companies. I bring all of the clips in as dv files, mess with them in FCP, then export to mov. I then use CS4 encoder to convert them to mp4's. Works great. My question is I have a project where the client is wanting the project on DVD's to pass out to his customers. Do I still bring the clips in as dv and export as mov? Do I bring them into FCP as mov's? When I bring movs into FCP I have to render them every time I sneeze. DV's are instantaneous...as we all know.
Any help would be great. Looking for the highest quality available.

".mov" is not a format, it's a wrapper-- a DV could be a .mov, just as an mp4 could too. If you've been having trouble rendering .movs, then you need to check your sequence settings to make sure they match the actual format of the video.
Regarding DVD export, the best way is to export from FCP as a Quicktime Movie (not Quicktime Conversion) using Current Settings-- this will give you the highest possible quality. Then transcode to MPEG2 using Compressor (or, if you feel so inclined CS4 Encoder) and burn them with any DVD authoring app (iDVD, Toast, DVDSP, etc.)

  • Standard Midi File Import/Export Questions

    Hi,
I'm having some trouble with Standard MIDI files, in that, after exporting them, and importing them back into another Logic project to test them, some of them will split/demix. That is, instead of one MIDI region appearing, it imports as two MIDI regions, with the notes of the part split between the two regions (the notes seem to split according to velocity, not note value).
Here is my question related to this:
Is it possible to export a Standard MIDI File for each "part" in a project, rather than one SMF for all the MIDI files in a project? (i.e., create one SMF for each software instrument track)? This is what I'm trying to do. The reason is that I'm trying to prepare and save some MIDI files to include with the audio files in a remix pack, and, since it's likely that the various remixers will be using different DAWs such as Cubase, I'm assuming that a SMF that includes all the various parts might not import into their program correctly. Is my assumption wrong? I.E., will most DAWs, like Cubase, etc., correctly import a SMF that includes all parts, and upon import split those parts correctly?
I'm following all the instructions for "Saving Standard MIDI Files" from the Logic Pro manual, except that I am not merging all the different instruments' MIDI regions together; I'm only merging each individual parts' MIDI regions.
    Thanks!

Well I think the problem is solved. There was a conflict between Logic and iLife 06. I bought a new computer this week and had to load everything into it. I decided not to put in iLife 06 yet including Garageband and all the jam packs. I loaded all the new .caf files off the Logic DVD
I opened a midi file and all tracks loaded with Logic instruments. the problem was that a lot of the instruments had been erased somehow or over written by Logic studio. Now I believe they are all there and things are working as they should

  • Does iMovie '09 downgrade HD video?!  Import/export questions.

Just bought my first HD camcorder that records in 1920x1080 resolution; I was planning to import the clips into iMovie'09 at the "full" setting (instead of the "large" setting) to retain maximum quality -- but when I do this, and export an iMovie using QuickTime, it says that the "current" resolution is 960x540. Umm, huh?
I am SURE I am recording and importing at the 1920x1080 resolution, so why is iMovie downgrading my HD by default?
Is there a way to keep the full resolution? Should I care? Eventually I want to maybe play these movies on an HDTV... I know I can change the export settings from 960x540 to 1920x1080, but how you can you magically achieve that full quality if the project is "current" at 960x540?
Given the above, is it even worth importing footage in the full 1920x1080 mode if it converts to 960x540 anyway?!
Thanks for any help in advance.

this is an interesting question. I had read that if you add anything tricky to the 1080 project that it goes to 540 anyway, speed changes, things like that. And even if you share to media browser at the HD level (a 540 Large import from camera) you then get upgraded to 720p.
your last question has eluded me. but I import from camera at large (540). I share to media browser at HD level and get a 720p .mov. I tried Export to QuickTime and picked Apple Intermediate Codec (Supposed to be less compressed, takes longer, larger file) but it had problems with the colors in the stills of the movie as it went from still to still. That 720p movie , when played on a HD screen (my HD TV) looked excellent, not HD HD, but was much better than SD. and DVDs made from that look pretty good.
At some point we will be recording in HD, editing in HD, and burning BlueRays to play HD. Apple will have to change iMovie to default handle it, keep it in HD, and add a blueray player and burner to the computers, i hear they do not plan on that.we will also need large many TB drives to store it all on.
The two issues that you have to remember, is that you probably have a consumer brand HD video recorder, what you are recording is HD but with poor optics. And when you watch it on your computer screen it wont look as good as it will on a better screen, as your computer screen is likely a limiting agent as well.

  • Import/export question....

    Hi..
I have a folder on one instance which have almost 20 joins with other folders.... when i export the folder and import it on another instance the joins are not imported...
can anyone tell what could be the problem?
    Thanks.

Michael is correct, but it can get even more complex than that. If you have item classes and item hierarchies for the folder, and you are doing selected objects, you have to include those as well along with the folders that also are included in those definitions.
Rather than do export of selected objects, we choose the option to export selected business areas. Even with that you have to be careful. You don't want to share folders across business areas if you do things this way, as you can still run into import problems if you don't pick all the involved business areas (and trying to figure those out can be tough).
That would leave the other option to consider - export the whole EUL.
Just some things to think about.

  • Import export questions

    Hi.
I want to import on portal 3.0.9.8.0 an export file from a component from portal 3.0.9.8.3A. Is that a problem?
Does upgrading the portal to the latest 3.0.9. version infects the components already on it?
    Thanks!

    Anybody?

  • Importing/exporting question

I'll start by saying I'm new to video editing and adobe premiere pro.  Forgive me if what I ask has been asked repeatedly before but I can't find an answer to my question through keyword searchs of google and these forums.
That said I have a canon vixia HF M31 HD camcorder.  I thought it was 1080p but investigating on the web it seems like my frame rate settings are 60i and 30p but 30p is really 30i??  I'm a little confused about this.  I've been recording in what the camcorder tells me is 60i at 24Mbps but when I put the files on my windows 7 PC the file description and adobe tell me the video is 29.97 fps.
I'm using adobe premiere pro CS6.0.1 and adobe media encoder CS6 6.01.31(64 bit) in a windows 7 environment.  8 gig of DDR3 ram, 3.18 ghz intel dual core processor overclocked to 3.50 ghz and an nvidia 570 gtx video card.
So when I set up a new project I originally thought my video was 1080p at 60i so thats the preset I used in adobe.  So my first question is, why is my camcorder saying 60i and my pc telling me its 30(not sure how to tell p or i from file description) and two if my sequence settings are in fact wrong because its really 1080i 30i do I need to start the project over?  I've done all my edits already.  Is it simply a matter of copy and pasting the edits/music into a new sequence with the appropriate settings?
My last question is regarding what appears to be frame rate lag or slightly jerky picture during pans/zoom outs of wide shots.  Most of the video of close up and medium shots plays smooth after I encode it but theres a few wide shots where I pull out showing off the entire landscape of a garden I was shooting and it gets a little jerky.  Its slight but definitely noticeable.  However when I watch the original .mts files of the same shots in VLC they playback smooth.  So something is happening in the adobe process that is making them jerky.  Can anyone help me out with how to smooth those shots out??
Thank you guys so much for your help.  Having a blast with this new hobby but as you know, so much material to learn!

frame rate settings are 60i and 30p but 30p is really 30i??  I'm a little confused about this.
You're not the first.  Camera makers have yet to get this one right, and that causes a LOT of confusion for a lot of people.  Here's how it works.
Long format notation lists the horizontal resolution, followed by an i for interlaced or p for progressive, a slash, and then the frame rate.  Like this:
    480i/30 (Normal video)
    480p/24 (Film look video)
    1080i/30 (HD video)
    720p/60 (Another HD video standard)
Short format notation drops the resolution and the slash, and moves the i or p after the frame rate.  Like this:
    30i
    24p
    60p
Now you'll notice that in both cases, only the frame rate is listed.  Camera makers screw up this standard notation by listing the field rate (a field is half a frame) for interlaced settings.  But this is not correct.  So when a format should correctly be listed as 30i (30 interlaced frames per second), camera makers incorrectly list it as 60i (60 interlaced fields per second).  This is wrong for two reasons.  First, proper notation is to list only the frame rate, so technically speaking, 60i actually means 60 interlaced frames per second, and there just is no such thing.  You can have 60 progressive frames, but not 60 interlaced.  And second, interlacing implies fields.  It's understood.  So saying "interlaced fields" is a bit like saying a "female woman".  It's a rather ridiculous phrasing because all woman are female.  You can say woman, or female, but no one says both.  With video, you can say it's interlaced (this is what the "i" means), or you can say that it has fields instead of whole frames, but not both.  It's absurd.  And since everyone by default uses the "i", you just don't ever list the field rate in the specs.  You use i or p, and list only frame rate.
So, the upshot here is that 60i is the incorrect way of saying 30i.  30p is actually something different.  30i means 30 interlaced frames, 30p means 30 progressive frames.  Both are genuine formats, and both are correctly annotated.  If you shoot in 60i mode on your camera, you're actually shooting in 30i, and this is what PP is showing you.
The final piece of the puzzle is that the actual frame rate for video is 30,000/1001 frames per second.  But saying or even writing that is very cumbersome, so it get's shortened to 29.97, and that often get's further shortened to just 30.

  • Basic Exporting Question

My main question is a very basic exporting question, but here is a super-condensed explanation of my big-picture goal for context:
Large (~450 MB) aiff on CD --> trim w/ Quicktime --> small (~16 MB) MP3 in iTunes
I would like to take an audio file (aiff) that is approximately 450 MB and export it from Quicktime and in doing so, reduce the file size and convert it to MP3. When I simply try to export it, it doesn't ask me about what size I want, nor does it give the option of MP3 formatting.
I have figured out how to reach my goal, but it's a mess. After I make my trims in QT, I have to:
    1. select "share" instead of "export".
    2. It asks me what size I want and I select small.
    3. The file is then exported as a Quicktime movie into Mail and the size is reduced from 450 MB to about 20 MB.
    4. I then have to "right-click" on the attachment in the email that is created,
    5. save the attachment,
    6. discard the email,
    7. import the file into iTunes, and
    8. create an MP3 in iTunes to finally arrive at my goal.
This seems like a ridiculously convoluted process to change a large aiff to a small MP3 and put it in iTunes. Any suggestions?

Thanks. I guess the basic answer to my question is that it can't be done in one or two fell swoops. The problem is that it starts on a burned disc, and I need to make edits to it before it ends up in iTunes (to be eventually used in iWeb). I was hoping to avoid juggling back and forth between iTunes and QT. I either would have to send it back to QT to do the edits after -->iTunes-->mp3, or import the large file from the CD to QT, make the edits, save changes, import large file to iTunes, convert to mp3.

  • Questions on Subviews and Import/Export in Data Modeler v3 EA1.

I have a few questions about the capabilities of Data Modeler v3 EA1:
    1) Is it possible to rename subviews? Would like more meaningful names then Relational_x - Subview_x.
    2) Is it possible to save documents at subview level?
    3) Is it possible to import/export subsets of data?
    4) Having problems importing Erwin 7 .xml file, is there known problems with this import?
    Judy

    Hi Judy,
    1) To rename a subview just right click on it in the browser tree and select "Properties". In the properties dialog change the name and click OK button.
    2) You can save a subview as new Data Modeler design - from the File menu select Export -> To Data Modeling Design. In the newly opened dialog select the subview you want to export and click OK button.
    3) After saving a subview as new design (see answer #2) it can be imported in some other design (File -> Import -> Data Modeler Design).
    4) What kind of problems do you have with import of Erwin 7.* xml file?

  • Importing/Exporting + syncing Questions

    Hi there,
just a question with regards to Importing/Exporting + syncing .
First of all, is it possble to sync Yahoo Calendar with iCal, or is there a cool widget/tool that does so in real time?
Second, I currently have a Mac at work running 10.2.8 and would like to somehow sync to my Mac at home running 10.4.8 without exporting/importing from media devices. The Mac at work is always online running through cable connection to outside world... My Mac at home is connected to a switch and than through adsl modem to outside world... What is the best way to connect the two through the Sharing setup in System Preferences
    thanks

I'm interested in the same sort of thing. i have a Desktop at home and a laptop on the road. Usually with other files and apps, I just copy the files to my lap top before I leave, but with iCal, I do not know where the 'file' is...?

  • Question regd import/export feature of CUCM BAT

    Hi,
We have a production CUCM cluster running 8.6.
I have been asked to create 300-400 translation patterns.
I see that I can not do that directly via BAT. But I see import/export option.
We already have 1000s of existing translation patterns on our system.
I have a quick question about the import feature.
Does a new import replace the existing data in the database with the data in the import file or does the new data in the import file get added to the existing data.
if the import file has only the new translation patterns, will it wipe out the existing translation patterns in the system?
I don't have a lab cucm system to check this behaviour?
Can you please help me on this query?
    Thanks,
    Pete

I do this often and it is the only way to bulk add translation patterns. It will not remove any translation patterns it will only add/change the translation pattern. If all new patterns it will simply add your new entries.

  • Questions on Import/Export Personalizations

    Hi,
We are on 11.5.10 CU3. We have dozens of personalizations in Dev. I understand that Functional Administrator Import/Export tool can be used to transfer them from Dev to production. I am facing some issues when I try that.
    1. I exported a personalization in Dev to the same instance java/custom. It created the directory structure java/custom..../site/0/ReqSummaryPG.
    2. I imported it back. This was successful.
    3. I re-imported it. It failed without an explanation for the failure. What could be the reason? Doesn't it just overrite the previous import - like when importing substituions?
    4. I copied the custom/..../site/0 to another instance and imported it there. It was successful. However I could not see the personalizations.
    5. So I checked. I realized that the directory structure was wrong. It was java/custom/apps/..../site/0
    instead of java/custom/oracle/apps/..../site/0.
    6. So I corrected the directories and re-imported. Failure like 3 above. I thought it was because of duplicate records. So i did the query select * from jdr_paths where PATH_NAME like '%ReqSummaryPG%'. I got only one record which was the seeded record. So eventhough 4 was successful there is only one record. Why?
Do I have to bounce Apache for each separate import of the same document?
Is there documentation on this utility with best practices? I see in the forum that no-one could successfully make this utility work.
Any help would be appreciated. I thought this was a simple utility ...
    Thanks
    Sandeep

Well this worked the next day! I reimported ReqSummaryPG again and it worked. I believe a few Apache bounces took place inbetween.
We were able to export/import quite a few personalizations. However, we got it right the first time this time around
I am still interested in knowing why a second consecutive import of the same doc doesn't work? And how to make it work? This would help in resolving issues in case of mishaps. Appreciate it if someone can provide an explanation.
    Thanks
    Sandeep

  • Another question about import/export to excel file?

Hi, I need to know urgently if it's possible to import/export excel files from/to JSP with unpredicted number of fields each row. For example, row 1 in the excel file can have 5 columns of data, row 2 has 3 columns of data, etc...
Does reading from excel file in JSP require that we know beforehand how many columns there are and what each column represent?

    go read http://jakarta.apache.org/poi !!!!!!
No it doesnt. the POI api provide method to determine the number of cells in a row.

  • Import/export db question

    Hi, all:
I used export command to export "full" db from db1 and like to import the whole thing into db2. I created a new db for importing. However, it seems like the db users and tablespaces I created in db1 won't be carried to db2 while doing import "full" command. From my understanding that export "full" should also export the users/tablespaces as well. However, after importing into db2, I find that there are lots missing parts such as users, tablespaces, data for some tables, triggers for some tables. Only part of those have been transferred into db2 (except users, tablespaces). Why did that happen? Did I do anything wrong?
The weird thing is that only part of those information missing !
Here are the samples of my command:
    c:\> exp user/pass full=y rows=y file=export_db1.dmp
    c:\> imp user/pass full=y rows=y file=export_db1.dmp
    Thanx in advance ~
    Rachel

From my understanding that export "full" should also export the users/tablespaces as well. The import and export utilities do export tablespaces. You will have to reread your utilities documentation, as your understanding is wrong.
Why did that happen? Did I do anything wrong?
The weird thing is that only part of those information missing !Make sure you stipulate a log file, either in the command-line or in the control file. Review the errors that occur. I have encountered a million obstacles with import/export, but never one that didn't yield an error message.

  • Regarding Workflow 2.6.2 backup/migration/import/export

hi folks. i m quite amazed that this forum does not provide any answer to the question of taking backup of workflow 2.6.2 or import/export of owf_mgr schema. if one cannot take backup how this oracle workflow is stable. how this product is suitable for any organization. its a very basic requirement. ok its about processes and states.... but, even then i cant get the logic of not taking a backup. sometime we have to move data across servers
the only answer that i have seen for this is way back jan-09-2003 that its not possible yet. its now 2006 any one who can guide may be i got something or many a things wrong.

    hi folks,
    thanks for reply
Matt: considering ur statment para what i get for para 1
Full backup is fine - although there are some objects which are owned by SYS, as long as youare going from one database with WF installed to another one, you should be OK.
    is
what i understand that u are talking about taking backup of entire database and not of just owf_mgr from export utility. if this is the case then do i really need to have owf_mgr user/schema installed where i have to import that backup
    Secondly for Para 2
Runtime data is a different thing altogether, although I can't really see why you would want to migrate the runtime data from one DB to another.
what i get from ur description of Runtime data here, is about the data that represents different process states relavant data which is stored and maintained in different tables. Am I Right?
if the answer is yes then the answer to ur question (asked in the last line of ur statment) is that i dont want only runtime data to be exported rather i wanna export full user and its schema. and the reason from moving it from one server to another server is simply to have backup for the time of system crash or failiure
I am keenly anticipating ur reply
