Basic iPhoto questions:

I have some Basic iPhoto questions before I start using the program:
- does iPhoto apply any compression or change images in any way when they
are imported?
- after images are imported, can the original source folder of images be deleted off of the mac?
- can Quicktime files exported from iPhoto be viewed on a Windows computer?
- can iPhoto handle large resolution images that might be as large as 8-15mb each? does it display them quick? are there any known file size issues?
Thanks!!!!

kat.
Is there a way to use iPhoto on a network so other users can read and possibly write to an iPhoto library on a networked mac?
iPhoto is a consumer level photo organiser, not a server. It's possible to share photos but libraries are very difficult and fraught with the danger of database corruption. Some have reported success.
Is it possible to password protect or secure certain images in the library so they can not be seen by anyone?
No. The best I can suggest there is to create a second library and store it in a secure area like a protected dmg. But remember, you can only have one library open at a time.
After photos are deleted from iPhoto, are there any remaining traces or cached files anywhere other than the trash
If you delete photos from iPhoto and empty the iPhoto trash then the pics are removed from the Finder as well. They remain as findable as any other deleted file from that point, which is, very, if the searcher in knowledgeable.

  • IPhoto Questions:  Merge and Sort;  Cropping;  Collage

    Hello,
         I have some iPhoto questions:
         (1)  I have several different photos from different sources of my son's wedding.  I have merged the photos into one album and sorted them by date in iPhoto, but they are still showing all over the place.  How do I merge/sort them so that they all show in chronological/date & time order?
         (2)  I can only crop in square or rectangular shape.  Does iPhoto have a way of cropping using different shapes like heart, circle, triangle, etc?
         (3)  I cannot seem to find a way to create a collage in iPhoto where I can put 2 or more photos in one frame.  Is there a way for iPhoto to do this?
         I am not sure if these are iPhoto limitations or I need an upgrade to a version that can do all these?
    Thanks...

    As it merges the libraries iphoto library manager will ask you what you want to do with duplicates. However, remember files with different sizes are not duplicates. Also importing one library to another is not a good idea. You'll get a mess of different versions of files treated as new imports, so that's no way to merge.

  • Object class deployment - Basic form question

    OK, I subclass calendar object from Oracle provided standard
    object class. What do I need to deploy to use this form now
    apart from calendar.pll and my fmx. What about the object class
    from which I sub-class. Do I need to compile and deploy that
    also? How will form resolve this on run time the parent object
    class as I really did not copy, just sub class and we do not
    deploy original class? Basic form question. Thanks.

    You can set the "help" property on the field (which gives you the little "information" icon link beside the field).
    You could also try adding another field of another class above or below:
    <Display class='InlineAlert'/>
    <Display class='ErrorMessage'/>
    <Display class='HtmlPage'/>
    ..etc

  • Adding Date/Time Field + X Number of Days - Basic Calculation Question

    I am assuming this is a basic calculation question. New to Adobe LiveCycle Forms.
    I have a simple form containing a table. The table appears as such:
    Text
    Formatted as Date/Time Fields
    Header 3
    Monday
    user wil choose the beginning date (Date/Time) this is DateTimeField1
    Tuesday
    this should calculate DateTimeField1 + 1
    Wednesday
    this should calculate DateTimeField1 + 2
    Thursday
    this should calculate DateTimeField1 + 3
    Friday
    this should calculate DateTimeField1 + 4
    Saturday
    this should calculate DateTimeField1 + 5
    Sunday
    this should calculate DateTimeField1 + 6
    Calculations are performed after the date is chosen for Monday. My mind tells me the simple calculation of DateTimeField1 + 1 is not going to work (and in fact doesn't!) as it needs to change Monday to a number first. I saw on another thread the following:
    Num2Date(Date2Num(Date(DateTimeField1), "DD.MM.YYYY")+7, "DD.MM.YYYY")
    Thought this was going to get me close. No cigars though!
    Any quick help is greatly appreciated. And since I am new to this, details about what needs to be changed would be great too!
    Thanks

    Here an addition for you date field.
    This FormCalc script in the exit:Event will check it the selected date is on a monday.
    If not it will go the days back until the last monday.
    var Selection = Date2Num($.formattedValue, DateFmt(2))
    var WeekDay = Num2Date(Selection, "E")
    var NewDate
    if (WeekDay eq 1) then
              NewDate = Selection - 6
    elseif (WeekDay eq 3) then
              NewDate = Selection - 1
    elseif (WeekDay eq 4) then
              NewDate = Selection - 2
    elseif (WeekDay eq 5) then
              NewDate = Selection - 3
    elseif (WeekDay eq 6) then
              NewDate = Selection - 4
    elseif (WeekDay eq 7) then
              NewDate = Selection - 5
    else
              NewDate = Selection
    endif
    $ = Num2Date(NewDate, "EEE DD.MM.YYYY")
    Hope this helps, too.

  • IPhoto question-I NEVER look at my events, and I keep running our of space can I delete the "Events" of my IPhoto?

    IPhoto question-I NEVER look at my events, and I keep running our of space can I delete the "Events" of my IPhoto?

    No, you can't delete all your events. You could merge them all together so you'd have just one, but doing so would hardly save any space, just as putting all your documents in a single folder would hardly save any space. It's the documents and photos themselves, not the containers and subcontainers in which they are organized, that really take up space.
    If you have additional iPhoto questions, I suggest posting them in the iPhoto forum where the real gurus hang out.

  • Iphoto question. When I try to email a photo, it bounces back as being to large. My older Mac allowed me to send in a smaller format.

    An iPhoto question .When I try to email several photos, an error message shows saying they are too large. My older Mac had 3 sizes to pick in sending photos. Is there a way to send my pics in a smaller size?

    When iPhoto creates the email, look in the lower right for size options.

  • Basic Exporting Question

    My main question is a very basic exporting question, but here is a super-condensed explanation of my big-picture goal for context:
    Large (~450 MB) aiff on CD --> trim w/ Quicktime --> small (~16 MB) MP3 in iTunes
    I would like to take an audio file (aiff) that is approximately 450 MB and export it from Quicktime and in doing so, reduce the file size and convert it to MP3. When I simply try to export it, it doesn't ask me about what size I want, nor does it give the option of MP3 formatting.
    I have figured out how to reach my goal, but it's a mess. After I make my trims in QT, I have to:
    1. select "share" instead of "export".
    2. It asks me what size I want and I select small.
    3. The file is then exported as a Quicktime movie into Mail and the size is reduced from 450 MB to about 20 MB.
    4. I then have to "right-click" on the attachment in the email that is created,
    5. save the attachment,
    6. discard the email,
    7. import the file into iTunes, and
    8. create an MP3 in iTunes to finally arrive at my goal.
    This seems like a ridiculously convoluted process to change a large aiff to a small MP3 and put it in iTunes. Any suggestions?

    Thanks. I guess the basic answer to my question is that it can't be done in one or two fell swoops. The problem is that it starts on a burned disc, and I need to make edits to it before it ends up in iTunes (to be eventually used in iWeb). I was hoping to avoid juggling back and forth between iTunes and QT. I either would have to send it back to QT to do the edits after -->iTunes-->mp3, or import the large file from the CD to QT, make the edits, save changes, import large file to iTunes, convert to mp3.

  • A few basic iPhoto 11 questions

    I just updated my iMac from Tiger (I know...) to Mavericks and it's great, but there's a few things in iPhoto that are way different from my old version- wondering if I can re-apply these.
    1) I used to be able to label photos by hovering over the photo and a dialogue box would appear, then once I titled it the title would stay under the photo. I can title photos now by going to info and titling it but when I'm in album view I can't see the titles whereas I used to.  I looked in preferences and everything but can't change it, is there a way to do this?
    2) This one is basic and stupid- in my old version just 1 click would enlarge the photo from album view vs highlighting it and needing to double click to enlarge.  Any way to revert this back to the old way?
    I know these are really stupid questions but it's just conveniences I got used to that would be nice to have back.

    1. View Menu -> Select 'Titles'
    2. Tap the Space Bar.

  • New to mac and iphoto, questions about photo structure & organization

    I bought a new Macbook Pro a couple of days ago and am still figuring things out. I wasn't displeased with windows...I just decided to try a mac anyway, So far, I adore it except for one thing, the pictures.
    I spent hours researching whether to download and use picasa 3 for mac or iphoto. I decided on picasa....and now I've changed my mind. (Mostly because I tried to take pictures of the moon tonight, and they looked great in camera, but Picasa could only pick up a black screen whearas iphoto actually saw and defined the moon- and with the editing software on the two, the picasa auto-edit looked like a picture that was created in microsoft paint, and iphoto came out with a beautifully contrasted photo).
    Now that I decided to use iphoto, I have been researching how to switch and still seem to have a lot of questions. (I've poked around numerous forums but have found conflicting answers on different sites).
    1) I organize my pictures by folders with the month and year. I know iphoto organizes events, which it seems to determine based on photo similarity. Will my photo structure still appear in finder -> pictures?
    2) Is it possible to stop iphoto from organizing my pictures and just trust me on what I want?
    3) All of my friends and family use PCs, and there is a chance that due to financial concerns, when I eventually replace my macbook pro (far in the future) I could switch to a pc. Does iphoto make transferring pictures more difficult? (If I understand correctly, it does not change the photo file, a jpeg is still a jpeg but I want to be sure)
    4) I do not want iphoto to duplicate all of the pictures already in my library....if I import from finder-users-pictures, will it simply use those, or duplicate all 150gb worth of pictures?
    5) Any other tips for someone completely new to macs and iphoto?
    6) This is very silly, but how do I uninstall picasa (I know how to uninstall on a windows but want to make sure I do things correctly on my mac!)
    Also, just a "bonus"- regarding events vs. files I create, will iphoto create events within the program but leave my file structure in the library it imports from alone? If I use finder to go to where I store my photos, will I still see my file structure regardless of what iphoto does?(Does that make sense? I'm having a hard time trying to describe it)
    I apologize if this question is foolish or misplaced- I did read many other posts but didn't see the answers I was looking for.

    Your questions are neither foolish nor misplaced.
    The first thing I strongly suggest is that you make a trial iPhoto Library. Import 100 or 200 pics and explore. Iphoto isn't right for everybody, and if you're going to use it you will need to rethink things a little.
    1) I organize my pictures by folders with the month and year. I know iphoto organizes events, which it seems to determine based on photo similarity. Will my photo structure still appear in finder -> pictures?
    A: Events are based entirely on Date and Time not on 'photo similarity' You can set the interval for what makes an Event in the iPhoto Preferences: iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> General Pane: Autosplit into Events... And select from the drop down menu.
    Will my photo structure still appear in finder -> pictures?
    Yes or no, depending... iPhoto can run as a Referenced or Managed Library. In the former case, yes you files will be visible in the Finder, in the latter case they won't.
    Note that Referenced or Managed refers +only to file storage+ It offers no extra functionality, it does nothing at all. App like iPhoto are your go-to app for your photos. If you use it, then you never access the photos via the Finder. Ever. It's always via iPhoto or the many, many hooks into the OS that it has.
    I'll detail more on Referenced v Managed below.
    2) Is it possible to stop iphoto from organizing my pictures and just trust me on what I want?
    I'm not sure what you mean by this. Iphoto does basic date and time organisation by default. You can change it, you can change the location of the photos in Events, merge them and then using the other tools available - Albums, Smart Albums, Faces, Places etc you can organise your photos whatever way you want.
    But what do you mean by pictures. There is a distinction between Photos - the image of your child holding his dog - and files: A Jpeg is just a file. Iphoto is designed for you to +forget about the jpeg+ and get on with the interesting bit: the pics of your younger and his pet.
    A Jpeg is a Jpeg is a Jpeg. If you migrate to another app or an entire OS you can export the photos plus any and all metadata you've added to the Finder and move it on. (Caveat: You cannot export Faces. There is no agreed standard on any system for exchanging this info.)
    4) I do not want iphoto to duplicate all of the pictures already in my library....if I import from finder-users-pictures, will it simply use those, or duplicate all 150gb worth of pictures?
    It can do either. And this brings me back to the Referenced v Managed discussion above. By default, iPhoto will Manage the files, that is, it will copy them into the Library. You can choose not to, but I strongly recommend that you don't:
    *How to do it:*
    Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
    *What Happens:*
    Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
    *Some things to consider:*
    1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
    4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
    My own opinion:
    I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers
    If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    *For Users of 10.5 and later*
    You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    *For users of 10.4 and later* ...
    Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
    To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
    This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
    If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
    If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
    *If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
    For users of 10.6 and later:
    You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
    For Users of 10.4 and later:
    Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    *If you want to edit the photo in another application:*
    You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
    5) Any other tips for someone completely new to macs and iphoto?
    *To Push Home a point*
    For someone inexperienced with Macs and inexperienced with iPhoto I cannot stress enough that Managed Library is the way to go. I understand there is comfort in seeing all those folders. But inside the Library that's all there is: all those folders, stored so that an inexperienced user can't grub things up!
    The iPhoto Library Folder is a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. Want to see inside?
    Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
    Standard Warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
    Now close that window and forget about it.
    So, once you've imported your photos to iPhoto in a Managed Library, the surplus duplicates are +your folders+. Of course, in time, trash them to get back the wasted disk space. But don't do it today or tomorrow. There's no hurry. When you feel confident that you understand how iPhoto is working and that's it's working for you, theat's the time to reclaim the space.
    I organize my pictures by folders with the month and year.
    If you want to duplicate your Folder Tree in iPhoto:
    Start at the bottom of the hierarchy and drag a folder of images to the Album Heading in iPhoto. The pics will be imported and an Album of the same name created.
    You can then create the Enclosing Folders in the iPhoto Window (File -> New Folder) and drag the Album to it. Folders can contain other Folders (Nested Folders) and Albums.
    However, is your folder system date based? Then this form of organisation is a bit pointless in iPhoto when Smart Albums or the Calendar tool (Click on the wee magnifying glass in the Search Box) mean you can find the photos taken on any day, month or year at a click. With Smart Albums it's easy to find photos from specific range - say, June 3 to August 25, 2009 etc.
    If your folder system is theme based - Xmas pics, Birthday pics etc, then you'll find Keywords are much more flexible, and can be used in conjunction with other criteria for making Smart Albums and searches.
    6) This is very silly, but how do I uninstall picasa (I know how to uninstall on a windows but want to make sure I do things correctly on my mac!)
    Drag the app to the trash and empty it.

  • IPhoto Questions - Mac G5

    Hey guys!
    I have a question regarding iPhoto in Mac OS X. All photos are arranged by date which is a problem since many of my photos do not have that information available. I want to locate photos by topic, i.e. name of child, event, holidays, etc. Is there a way to tag the photos because it will take me forever to find a picture by date. And in PSE3 for Mac, the browser window is not very big so I can't see a lot of pictures at a glance. Within iPhot, the photos are grouped under source by albums (names or topics). Why can't I browse by album rather than date? Any thoughts?
    Also, I've noticed that when I double click on a photo to import it into PSE3, the photos are all small and very fuzzy. The size is like 2" x 3". Was there something unique to Mac I should have done when downloading the photos from cd to iPhoto? The photos are all blurry. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm getting pretty frustrated.
    Debbie

    Okay, so are you saying I could set up folders say, in the Finder under Documents, and develop a file system much like I had in Windows? Personally, iPhoto doesn't help me much with Scrapbooking. I could download to a folder but the photos could remain in there indefinitely, until I find the time to scrapbook the pictures. The old windows folders worked just like a filing system. Open up this file for one child, this one for another. It seems to me it would be easier for me to grab my pictures in that manner than having to export to a file and then reimport. But I really don't know--thus all these silly questions. It sounds like the keywords in PSE aren't going to help me much--scripting? What is that? I tried to add keywords but they don't seem to connect to or find anything when I run the search. Should I try to recatagorize my files so I can browse to file folders because right now the browser just shows the worthless dated files from iPhoto? It it possible to turn off iPhoto when I'm in PSE and if so is this something to consider? I just want a file that when I see its name, I know what is going to be inside. Right now it's a guessing game and I don't have the time to hunt in every dated file to find that one picture. Even if I guessed the right year, many of the files do not have the correct dates so it's a hide and seek game.
    I think what I need from you both is your recommendations about what would work best for a scrapbooker? I have page kits and photos and that's basically all I need. My kits are all filed nice and neat in file folders that tell me exactly what is in that file. They pull up nicely in the browser so I can see them. That's what I need to be able to do with my pictures.
    I appreciate all the time you have spent trying to help. These are questions that are hard to find solutions to in a text book. What works for one person, doesn't for another. And since I'm still a newbie at the Mac I really don't know enough to make an educated guess. Everytime I do that, I screw something else up!!! I fix one thing and another question pops up! It's safer to ask the experts first!
    Thank you!
    Debbie

  • IPhoto Questions

    I have several questions on iPhoto.
    1. When printing photos, Is there a way to have the existing captions retained? Everything prints fine, but without the captions.
    2. How do I enlarge a photo when printing?
    2. When backing up the photo library, specifically, what files are copied?
    3. I'm considering buyng another Mac and networking them. If I want to transfer my photo library to this new Mac, do I just transfer the photo library folder to the new Mac--assuming iPhoto is installed on the new Mac?
    Thanks

    Hi, Bruce. By the numbers:
    1. What version of iPhoto are you using? By "captions", do you mean what iPhoto calls "titles"?
    2(a). Please explain exactly what you'd like to do. The size at which an image is printed by iPhoto depends on the options you've chosen in the Print dialog box.
    2(b). Backing up the iPhoto Library should be done by copying the entire iPhoto Library folder intact, as a single unit, to another storage medium, typically another hard drive. That results in everything being copied, and all the essential relationships among the parts being retained. Copying the library in pieces will make it unusable: it will have to be reconstructed from scratch, and all albums, film rolls, comments, ratings, keywords, titles, books, etc. that you've created will be lost.
    3. Yes, just copy it over. If the new Mac has a newer version of iPhoto installed on it, the library will be updated by the newer version the first time you open it. It will then be unusable in the older version, so if you still need to use the old version, keep the original library that you copied to the new machine in a safe place where it will be accessible to the older iPhoto version. You may also want to maintain a backup of it, as well as a backup of the updated version. Be sure to name them in such a way that you'll be able to tell which is which.

  • Few basic SRM questions .......

    I recently completed the SRM training from SAP and I have few basic questions and need help. Full points will be rewarded.
    These are my questions and it is based on SRM 5.0 Classic Scenario with R/3 backend
    1. Invoice  & confirmation transferred to R/3 via  ALE ? .  All other documents are transferred to R/3 via RFC?
    2. Based on the configuration, if the material is available in the backend then reservation will be created. Other wise PO will be created.  For text items, PR will be created.
         a. Who (purchaser) will process the PR in R/3 and how it is processed?.
         b. Who (purchaser?) will process the reservation in R/3 and how it is
             processed?. Assume no sourcing is setup in this case and No MRP run.
    3. How the vendor is linked to the Material or product category in SRM?. During the vendor replication from R/3, vendor and material/prod category link is automatically maintained?
    4. How the vendor is linked to a specific purchasing org/group? Is it based on the prod category assigned in the org structure for each purchasing org or purchasing group?
    5. How to do delta prod category replication?
    6. How to do Delta Material Replication?.
    7. Contracts and vendor list:-
        In our SAP training we created these from the browser. But in the actual
        implementation how do we create this?. Is it always from the browser?
    8. Direct Material and Plan driven Procurement.
       Can we use catalog items as direct material?. Just for example - > What
       about ‘Car Batteries’ that  is directly used in production and has the inventory
       also. But we are using electronic catalog for procuring this item. Is it possible to
       order this as direct material?
    9. How to replicate Plant. How to use DNL_PLNT?. Is BBP_LOCATIONS_GET_ALL will replicate all the PLANT's and its locations from the R/3 backend?
    10. In the HR system, which transaction we can view the org structure?

    You can use the following three routines to download locations from the backend system and store them as business partners in SAP Enterprise Buyer.
    BBP_LOCATIONS_GET_ALL
    To get all the location numbers from each backend system that is connected
    BBP_LOCATIONS_GET_FROM_SYSTEM
    To get all the location numbers from one particular backend system
    BBP_LOCATIONS_GET_SELECTED
    To get selected locations
    Previously, locations were not given business partner numbers in SAP Enterprise Buyer. If you are configuring an upgrade, you can use routines BBP_LOCATIONS_GET_FROM_SYSTEM and BBP_LOCATIONS_GET_SELECTED to check that the following conversions have been made:
    ·        Conversion of user favorites
    ·        Conversion of user attributes
    ·        Conversion of old documents
    Routine BBP_LOCATIONS_GET_ALL checks these automatically.
    Once you have run the routines, the location data is available in the SAP Enterprise Buyer system. Table BBP_LOCMAP contains the mapping information (in other words, which business partner number corresponds to which location in which backend system).

  • Photo Files and iPhoto Questions

    I have a few questions in relation to my actual picture files and when they are imported into iPhoto (on my mac).
    Intro: Let me catch you up on my situation, I have all my picture files (around 8000 of them!) on my time capsule; most of them are organized in their own folders (such as halloween 2011 and christmas 2010) but some of them are unsorted in their own folders (such as unsorted 2012 and moms cam). I've imported all these into iPhoto, the folders all appear as events, and I have applied faces and locations to almost all of them (about 85%). Now my questions:
    1: If I delete/move some pictures from my time capsule around the folders (so I move some picture from moms cam to halloween 2012 and thanksgiving 2012 folders), how do I sync this with iPhoto? (Ex. I have deleted some pictures from "my graduation" folder in my time capsule, but on the iphoto event for "my graduation", all the pics are there even the ones Ive deleted) Will I have to manually delete these from iphoto as well?
    Status: unanswered
    2: Is the data saved on the picture file? So If I were to delete the event from iPhoto, and re-import the folder, will all the faces and locations that Ive added on iPhoto still be saved? or would I have to manually add all the faces and locations again?
    Status: unanswered
    3: My main photo files are the files on my Time Capsule; If, by chance, iPhoto turns out to make its own file system of the photos I import, where would that location be? Are they individual files (such each pic as a .jpeg file) or is it something more like a single file with all the pictures and data?
    Status: unanswered

    1 - is the Time Capsule being used as an external hard drive or as a Time Machine backup drive - you must not use it as both
    2 - is the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library" is checked ( - a managed library - default and strongly recommended) or have you unchecked i (a referenced library - which it sound like you have - this is strongly not recomended)
    for your question 1, if you have a referenced library - iPhoto never does anything outside of its database - the iPhoto library - and it does not "sync" or watch external folders -  if you choose to manage the originals then you must do that  - one of the many reasons that a referenced library is not recommended is that improting is more difficult and deleting is more difficult
    for question 2, if you delete photos from iPhoto then they and all of their associated data is gone - if you reimport the "same" photo, its is totally new to iPhoto - you are starting from scratch with it
    for your question 3 - this is not a matter of chance - you either have a referenced library or a managed library which you choose - and in a referenced library the originals are not copied to the iPhoto library - for a managed library they are and are stored in the masters or originals folder in iPhoto depending on your version of iPhoto which you do not share as bit for bit copies of the originals

  • Basic swing question

    I just started looking at swing yesterday because I want to provide a GUI to replace a command line utility we use. I've basically finished it but have a quick question about form - I will get some literature later but would like to get a feel from the people here. If you have a JFrame with a few JPanels each which contain some other components, what is the best practice for variable declaration? Should I just declare the variables locally or should I make them instance variables? The reason I ask is that I have a button that submits a message but that message is dependant on check boxes, etc. from from the frame. If I declare them at the method level I then have to start passing them around whereas if I declare them as instance variables I can access them very easily BUT this may not be good form.
    For example:
    my class is SendMessageToo so in the main method I have a line like:
    final SendMessageToo smt = new SendMessageToo();
    now all the instance variables that I have can be accessed my the methods simply using smt.methodOne(), etc. Does that seem OK or is it just pure crap? :-)

    Thanks, that was something that crossed my mind before I just made eveything an instance variable. It was during that process that I thought, do these all need to be instance variables? Then I thought, SHOULD they all be instance variables. At that point my brain imploded so I came here. :)
