Basic questation about VSS and windows backup

hi all, basic questation about backup and VSS
Environment:
windows 2008r2,NAS backup disk connected with iSCSI
If i create in the windows backup server job , where i backup disk D , target is NAS disk and start it . Windows backup is requester and is created shadow copy . This shadow copy is created in the disk D or in the NAS disk ? If in the disk D is created for
everyone application snapshot ? After created snapshot the windows backup copy data from snapshot to windowsimagebackup ? And If windows backup create different snapshot how detect which files is changed ?
thank you
Falcon

Hi,
Windows Server Backup stores backup versions in volume shadow copies. After the data write is complete, Windows Server Backup creates a shadow copy of the volume where the backup is stored using Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). This shadow copy retains the
state of the storage volume as a “backup version” or “point-in-time” of the backup and must restore using this backup version.
You could refer to the article below to know the steps of a back up operation performs:
Backup Version and Space Management in Windows Server Backup
http://blogs.technet.com/b/filecab/archive/2009/06/22/backup-version-and-space-management-in-windows-server-backup.aspx
Windows Server Backup uses Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) and block-level backup technology to back up and recover your operating system, files and folders, and volumes. The Volume Shadow Copy Service is used to differentiate between backup sets, and to track
where the various blocks are being written to within the shadow copy storage.

  • Some basic questation about mbam and bitlocker

    Sorry for questation . What doing options Auto-unlock ?
    allow auto-unlock and require auto-unlock .
    and exist some construction betwen setting fixed drive and os drive . If I disable encrypting fixed drive or set only read fixed drive it mean that os drive is set to ?
    and about bitocker:
    exist solution how i enforce encrypting ?
    thank you
    Falcon

    Recovery key and the PIN are two different protectors. PIN is something you set to unlock your machine at boot. It provides an additional protection. You can always change the PIN choosing option, bitlocker drive encryption option from control panel.
    Recovery key is to log in the machine if your machine goes into the recovery mode. If you will not be able to access your OS Drive how you will be able to boot. TPM string is called as the Ownership Hash password which is different from the recovery string
    of the OS Drive which is a 48 digit numerical password.

  • Basic questation about backup SQL database

    Hi I have basic questation about backup database . If I set DPM to backup database and the database have full model and another application truncate log. Detect this dpm and create full backup or create error ?
    Falcon

    Hi,
    If you want another backup process to truncate the logs instead of DPM, you can just configure DPM to synchronize
    just before a recovery point.  That basically tells DPM to just perform express full backups which will not truncate logs.

  • Basic question about storage and safety in iMovie '11

    A very basic question about storage and safety:
    I want to keep a backup of my raw footage on my external hard drive prior to begin working on the movie in iMovie. I want to do this:
    1. Upload the digital files from my camcorder to my Desktop *(as opposed to iMovie)*
    2. Duplicate that footage/clips.
    3. Put the duplicate clips/footage into a folder labeled with the name of that footage (like "Fun At the Dentist" or "Jimmy Learns How to Yodel").
    4. Drag the folder with the footage/clips into my external hard drive into a pre-existing folder titled "Backups/duplicates of all of my raw footage/clips." This big granddaddy folder will house all of the child folders of different movies.
    5 Then, open up iMovie '11 and import the raw footage/clips from my Desktop rather than from my camcorder.
    6. Then I want to make a duplicate of my finished movie and put it in my external hard drive in a "Finished Movies" folder.
    I know that the original raw unedited footage will always be in iMovies '11 but I want the original to also exist immediately accessible in my external hard drive.
    QUESTION:
    Is this viable? Is it wise? (I know it goes an extra unnecessary step, but aside from that.)
    *Do you have any precautionary advice?* Should I do something in my iMovies '11 preferences? What?
    In earlier years with iMovie '04 or '06 (cannot recall) I made many novice errors and ended up losing audio to my finished movie. I also lost footage.
    This time around with iMovie '11 I don't to make such novice, ignorant errors.
    Thanks so much for any comments to this question.

    Yes I'm sure it will work great for you.
    The iFrame format is something Apple has come up with. The reason for its existence is unknown to me so I can only speculate. But it seems to me that Apple "invented" this format in order to have devices such as Ipod/Ipad/Iphone/Ixxx create clips that are editable on consumer hardware such as already mentioned devices but also standard Mac computers, without the need for format conversion.
    iMovie converts most input formats during import, which takes a lot of time, and this need for conversion often comes as a surprise to most people new to home video editing.
    iFrame has a resolution of 960x540 which is long way from the common standards of 1920x1080 and 1280x720. If your end target is YouTube however, this may not be too bad though. However if you intend to go with YouTube HD, you may find iFrame footage to look wrong since they are effectively upscaled to a higher resolution.
    Technically iFrame uses the H.264 algorithm, a smaller frame size (960x540) and a rather low compression scheme. This will result in large files, but the plus side is that the files are ready for editing without the need for any conversion and iMovie will natively edit the files.

  • RDS 2012 R2 - How do I lockdown access to Local Computer Management and Windows Backup via Group Policy

    Greetings all,
    I am needing assistance in how to lockdown access to Local Computer Management and Windows Backup via Group Policy for users that access RDS service. I have followed this awesome guide - h t t p://w w w.it.ltsoy.com/windows/lock-down-remote-desktop-services-server-2012/
      - but it is missing two important resources that I would like to lock down.Currently, I have successfully locked down Control Panel for users via Group Policy, but I cannot find any group policy or guide on how to restrict user access
    to Computer Management (different to Server Manager). When using Win-X shortcut to open the 'Administrator's shortcuts' near the windows icon, I have locked down everything except Computer Management. Computer Management gives direct access to Disk Management,
    Shares etc, which are locked down for users. But Windows Server Backup is still accessible. Can someone please guide me on how to restrict access to both Computer Management and Windows Server Backup.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Basic questation about sql backup

    HI all, sorry for my englisch . I have quetstaion about DPM and SQL 2012 database recovery model .
    If I select recovery model simple , that DPM always backup full backup ... This create with vss providera ?
    If I select full backup what work synchranization ? Every log files is copy to replica , and after copy truncate log ?
    thanx
    Falcon

    For application data that support incremental backups (exchange, SQL Db's in full recovery mode) there are two job types.
    A) Synchronization - This is equivalent of an incremental backup and only brings over log changes.  Each incremental synchronization is equivalent to a recovery point.  Each incremental synchronization results in application log truncation which
    is performed by the application (SQL / Exchange)
     B) Express full - This is equivalent to FULL backup, however only brings over Database changed blocks and applies them to the replica volume then makes a snapshot  Each express full backup is recoverable.  Express full backups do not result
    in log truncation by the application.  There is a 512 snapshot limit for express full backups.
    For applications that do not support incremental backups (SharePoint, SQL Db's in simple recovery mode, Hyper-V VMs)  always use express full backups.

  • Few basic questions about sharing and other stuff..

    Hi there!
    First of all I know where are "101" pages, but they are not giving detail information.
    1.I know there are some folders where I can put files, web-sites and other in order to enable sharing.
    What do I have to do to enable other users (from internet to)
    - view my webpage when they enter my IP address in browser
    - to access files which I want them to be able to acces (with user and password required)? I know there is sth like sharing, and windows sharing, but I give access to my all user folder, do I have to create new accounts on my mac?
    2. It's kind of small problem, but can I run apps in finder using only keyboard (enter causes rename action)
    3. Why doesn't safari keep addresses I used in addres field after few days?
    The most important question is 1.
    Will be gratefull for help.
    Thanks
    Adam Mscisz

    1. Start Personal Web Sharing from the Sharing pane of System Preferences; if you have a router between your computer and the Internet, ports 80 and 443 need to be forwarded to your computer. You can set this up from the router's configuration page, which is accessible by finding the router address in the Network pane of System Preferences and putting it into a web browser. See this article for instructions on how to password protect your shared files.
    2. You can use the Command and O keyboard shortcut to open the selected item in the Finder.
    3. The default setting in Safari is to keep the history for 7 days. You can use the method posted by ptejad in this article to extend the time Safari remembers the history for. The method at the top of the linked page won't work in Tiger.

  • Can I use the same drive to backup with Time Machine and Windows Backup?

    I've got a 1TB external hard drive that I'm currently using for Time Machine backups and also it stores about 300GBs of music. Can I partition the drive to add an NTFS formatted partition and use that partition with Vista's Backup/Restore feature? If so, how do I partition the drive? Forgive me, I'm a neophyte when it comes to Windows. Also, I don't want to lose the music files already saved on the Time Machine partition.

    While you can add HFS+ volumes to an existing drive, adding NTFS requires taking chances: change to FAT and then convert to NTFS.
    I'd invest in another backup. I don't even rely 100% on any one backup method; drive; let alone TimeMachine. A bootable backup should also be part of your strategy for OS X. So I would create a smallish 40GB emergency boot volume - for OS X use only.
    For Vista, I use the built-in features of Ultimate/Business AND Prosoft Engineering DataBackup PC. Norton Ghost started out okay but gradually deteriorated, though their 2009 360 2.0 or something....
    I would not want to use WinClone except as one-time 'snap shot' or emergency; useful when moving to a new larger hard drive, and if your Vista partition is small and not 100GB of files.
    I'd look at 500GB+ drive to use solely for Vista backup and media files.
    MacSales has $79-89 FW800/400 case for SATA drives, and just throw a good 640GB WD Caviar in for $78 and good to go.

  • Basic questions about AirPort and channels

    I have a VERY limited knowledge about networks. Please keep answers simple.
    My setup is very basic. My computer is connected to the internet via AirPort through my wireless gateway (router).
    When I pull down the AirPort menu from the toolbar it lists 3 network names plus Other. My network name is checked. Why are 2 others listed on my computer? They aren't listed in my AirPort Network System Preferences under Preferred Networks so I can't delete them.
    I downloaded iStumbler to try to get more information. It lists all 3 names plus one more that comes on and off. My signal is over 100% and all the others are around 50%.
    Also, three (including mine) are using channel 6 and one is using channel 1. Should I change my channel? Everyone always mentions 1, 6, and 11. Could I use 4 or 5? Are some channels stronger than others?
    Thanks.

    "...Why are 2 others listed on my computer?"
    You have neighbors with wireless networks and you are getting a signal from them.
    "They aren't listed in my AirPort Network System Preferences under Preferred Networks so I can't delete them."
    You can't delete them because they are your neighbors signals.
    "should I change my channel?"
    I would switch to channel 9.

  • Questation about powershell and encoding

    hi all,
    sorry for my englisch . i have questaton about abou file encoding . I have file with ISO-8859-2 . But if I call in the powershell funkcion OpenText , the currentencoding is UTF8 . How i change it ? The file is large and if I try opent with get-content the
    file is open about hour.... thanx
    Falcon

     ISO-8859-2 is not an encoding it is a character set.  Files do not specify character sets.  Character sets are specified by a system or by a document such as an HTML or XML document.
    I believe that ISO-8859-2 is the default Windows Central European character set. It is known as Latin II.  ISO-8859-1 is Latin I and is what is used in US Windows.  (See:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO/IEC_8859-1)
    Out-File and other file creation commands have an uncoding which determines how the characters are stored.   The default for Windows 7 and later is Unicode.
    Type: help out-file -parameter encoding
    ISO-8859-2 can be stored in any encoding except ASCII-7 as it is only 8 bits.  Windows always stores ASCII-7 as ASCII.
    All Unicode encodings can store ISO-8859-2.
    Here is the ISO-8859 to Unicode  spec:
    ftp://ftp.unicode.org/Public/MAPPINGS/ISO8859/8859-2.TXT
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
    I'm not sure it's a good idea to make the distinction between a character set and an encoding here.  When it comes to interpreting the bytes in a file, those two concepts are linked.  Even though Unicode encoding can be used to represent every
    character that ISO-8859-2 can represent, they don't always have the same byte values.  This code outputs their 57 differences:
    $iso8859_2 = [System.Text.Encoding]::GetEncoding('ISO-8859-2')
    $differences = for ($isoCode = 0; $isoCode -lt 256; $isoCode++)
    $isoString = $iso8859_2.GetString($isoCode)
    $unicodeBytes = [System.Text.Encoding]::Unicode.GetBytes($isoString)
    $unicodeCode = [System.BitConverter]::ToInt16($unicodeBytes, 0)
    if ($unicodeCode -ne $isoCode)
    [pscustomobject] @{
    Character = $isoString
    ISO8859_2_Code = $isoCode
    Unicode_Code = $unicodeCode
    $differences | Format-Table -AutoSize

  • File Saving.. question about Mac and Windows..

    Hi all!
    Just a quick question, is there anything that needs to be considered between saving a file from a java application on either Mac or Windows? Or does java "do" the work and I don't have to worry?
    So far I saved some text from using my application on a Mac but havent got to a PC yet, and would rather make the changes now..
    Thanks

    FYI, this is just on my iphone, not when I view through the web or on my iPad. This is how it looks on my iPhone though... 2 iCloud accounts? Please help.

  • Basic Questions about Looping and Headers

    Hello,
    Relative SSRS newcomer here and I have a couple of foundational questions...  These are based on the simple premise of the underlying dataset returning multiple rows of data, elements of each to be displayed on subsequent pages of the report.
    Is it fair to day that the Table (or Matrix) are the basic elements used for an iterative report?
    Assuming the above is true, I'm using a Table for my first experiment here.
    I can iterate and display my records but I'm struggling with header and footer information.
    I want to display header and footer information on each page the is part of the current record.  I've tried to add these elements in the 'header row' of the table, but that doesn't seem to do it.  I don't see any facility for a footer.  Is
    this to be accomplished with row groups or something?
    Any guidance would be appreciated.

    Hi Steven,
    According to your description, you want to display interview questions and answers between interview name and date, and different interview name displays in different page. After testing the issue in my environment, we can use list to achieve your goal.
    Please refer to the following steps:
    Add a table to the design surface, drag question_name, question_answer fields from the Report Data pane to the table cells, and delete the last column of the table.
    Click anywhere in a tablix data region, in the Grouping pane, Click Add Group, select Parent Group, in the Tablix Group dialog box, select interview_name, then click OK.
    Right click [interview_name] next to details symbol, click insert row, select Inside Group – Below, then Inside Group – Above.
    Delete the first row and the first column.
    Merge all the cells in the first and last row, then drag interview_name to the first row and drag interview_date to the last row from the Report Data pane.
    Add a List to the design surface, drag the tablix into the List.
    Select and right click the List, in the Grouping pane, Click Group Properties, click Add button and select interview_name from the drop down list. Then click Page Breaks, and check Between each instance of a group check box, click OK.
    The following screenshot is for your reference:
    If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask.
    Thanks,
