Basic Question, Please regarding 1.4.1.02 1.4.2.06

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
I have been using JRE 1.4.1.02 for some time and no problems. When I upgraded to 1.4.2.06 it took a staggering amount of additional memory; then I realized foolish me had not deleted the Installer, located in a multi numbered folder in Local Settings.
The bottom line is there's a 34MB difference in hard disk space between the two -- would you say that's worth the IMPROVEMENT of 1.4.2.06 over 1.4.1.02 ? I am only using Java RunTime to access webclips using Java, and to use Limewrire which requires some kind of Java "environment." Right now I have uninstalled 1.4.2.06 and reloaded 1.4.1; the java test webpage shows all is fine but that I'm obviously running an "older version."
Any opinions or thoughts would be appreciated. If you all think 1.4.2 is better (apparently runs 30x faster?) - then I'll go with the larger footprint and newer version. Thank you!

Thank you for that. I won't be too involved in this forum; just wanted an answer on if 1.4.1 works well, why switch. I am not a developer - I am a free space/memory/startup delay "freak," however.
I was told repeatedly after dumping Internet Explorer that "I couldn't uninstall it." There are utilities to wipe out NetMeeting, Outlook Express, Outlook, IE, accessories, games and a lot of other unnecessary garbage. Why bother with security updates (23 totalling 100MB for Win2k/Explorer) when you can GET RID of the leaks at the source . . . the apps themselves.
For that reason perhaps I should invest some of the saved 294MB in 1.4.2 or 1.5 or whatever the latest whiz-bang is. Please realize it's not as much a size thing as much as less startup time and "clutter," both registry and startup menu and overly fragmented directories have improved since the "slaughter." No Windows messages, no problems, no crashes. I'd rather "invest" 100MB in JRE, if in fact it's worth the size. Version 1.4.2 builds a huge "tree" of folders that 1.4.1 didn't - HOWEVER, it doesn't appear to contain the Jar 1.0 folders that needed cleaning out on browser exit as 1.4.1 did.
I was just curious what the benefits were, but all is going swimmingly and I think I'll leave it as is until I can find out what the perks are of upgrading. I can tell you and eveyone reading this that Firefox runs TERRIFIC useing the incorporated JRE and that Java Virtual Machine for I.E. is no longer necessary - fantastic. Limewire requires the JRE to run and 1.4.1 solves that, s did along the previous JRE versions I was using. I have upgraded at each opportunity until 1.4.1 - just can't see what 1.4.2 offers in addition. I'll try and find the "30x" reference and post it here if I can edit this post.
In the meantime thank you for the kind words -- accepted -- and all the best to you. We all have different priorities and one of mine is a "lean and mean" system (both PC and Palm) that does what I need and nothing more without a lot of bloating. I find that 30-60MB here and there quickly becomes 3GB of garbage that slows EVERY startup EVERY day and contributes to fragmentation as well as loss of speed. Developers might well NEED every nuance of improvement . . . . I'm happy I saw the dancing animation on the java test page, and as far as I'm concerned have "fulfilled" the basic needs JRE provides.

New to Solaris (unix) - basic questions (please)

I am completely new in Solaris World, and in fact in Linux too. All I can do (may be) is to walk throught dir tree. I have one big question and many many small ones. I've just installed Solaris 10 (writing this there), I am very happy and I don't know what to do. I hope you can give me some advice. Well, the big question is where to get information about how to do basic tasks I've been doing in windows?
The smaller questions (problems) is:
1) When I boot solaris it actually goes to console, and no window system (GNOME, CDE) appears. I've already been lucky for 2 times and I managed to launch windows by typing 'gnome-terminal', but it ofter respond with something and no window system lauched. Can I do so, that window system launched automatically?
2) I have primary partition on my hard drive with FAT 32 to share files with WindowsXP. Where can I see these files in Solaris (may be I should mount, how?)
3) How can I see files on my USB flash (how to mount)
4) Do I have to install drivers for my monitor(video card) in Solaris?
5) When I type 'man' its ok, but 'man ls' respond 'No manual entry for ls' (and all other commands. How to fix it?
6) Where I should store my files (doc, music etc. ). In windows its typically on different partitions (folders)

Well you've a long road ahead. But heres a start:
Answer to Question 1) /usr/dt/bin/dtconfig -eQuestion 2) If there are FAT32 driver in Solaris 10 (There weren't to my knowledge in Sol9 or earlier) you would need to mount them.

Question 3) would be similar to the answer to question 2, although you may be able to configure autofs for it 'man autofs'
Question 4) Not necessarily, but to get full functionality of your video card, yes - see manufacturers website
Question 5) Your MANPATH environment variable is bad OR you did not install them .... try 'pkginfo SUNWman' if it returns anything but not found try 'MANPATH=/usr/man:/usr/share/man:/usr/sfw/man ;export MANPATH' You can add additionaly directories pointing to manpage install locations by adding a colon followed by the directory.. first off hit 'man man'
Question 6) Gnome will help once you get it going (see answer 1). Otherwise store it however you like, just don't let the root partition get full or you'll likely crash it.

Silly basic question please help!

I composed a web site on iWeb and published via FTP to justhost several months ago. I now have a new MacBook and for the life of me I can't work out how to re-download my website into iWeb so I can make alterations and re-publish it. I'm sure I'm missing the obvious!!! help!!!

Answer is that you can't and don't re-download into iWeb. You need to copy/move your domain.sites file where iWeb stores all its information to your new MacBook. Your domain.sites file can be found under User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites. Please note that it is your User Library and not your System Library where iWeb is stored.
Find this and you can then e-mail the domain file to yourself on your new Mac.

Basic Questions on CUBE & DSO size

1 & 2. to check ODS/Cube data goto SE11/SE16-->give the name of the ODS/Cube as /BIC/A(ODS name)
and for the cube as /BI0/F(cube name) (before compression) and /BI0/E(cube name) (after compression).
3. Transferred records--> are the records loaded from Source.
Added records--> these are the records which are added to the cube/ods. This added records will depends on the Transfer/update rules of cube and ODS and also key fields in the ODS. This added records may be less or greater than transferred records.
Added to FCI the program: SAP_INFOCUBE_DESIGNS is to display how many rows per dimension table.

Basic question regarding SSIS 2010 Package where source is Microsoft Excel 97-2005 and there is no Microsoft office or Excel driver installed in Production

I got one basic question regarding SSIS 2010 Package where source is Microsoft Excel 97-2005. I wanted to know How this package works in production where there is no Microsoft office or Excel driver installed. To check that there is excel driver installed
or not, I followed steps: Start-->Administrative Tools--> Data Sources(ODBC)-->Drivers and I found only 2 drivers one is SQL Server and another one is SQL Server Native Client 11.0.
Windows edition is Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise, Service Pack-1 and System type is 64-bit Operating System.
We are running this package from SQL Server Agent and using 32-bit (\\Machine_Name\d$\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DTS\Binn\DTExec.exe /FILE "\\Machine_Name\d$\ Folder_Name\EtL.dtsx" /CONFIGFILE "\\Machine_Name\d$\Folder_Name\Config.dtsConfig"

In SSIS, the Excel Source and Excel Destination natively use the Microsoft Jet 4.0 OLE DB Provider which is installed by SQL Server. The Microsoft Jet 4.0 OLE DB Provider deals with .xls files created by Excel 97-2003. To deal with .xlsx files created by
Excel 2007, we need the Microsoft ACE OLEDB Provider. SQL Server doesn’t install the Microsoft ACE OLEDB Provider, to get it we can install the
2007 Office System Driver: Data Connectivity Components or
Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 Redistributable or Microsoft Office suit.
The drivers listed in the ODBC Data Source Administrator are ODBC drivers not OLEDB drivers, therefore, the Excel Source/Destination in SSIS won’t use the ODBC driver for Excel listed in it by default. On a 64-bit Windows platform, there are two versions
of ODBC Data Source Administrator. The 64-bit ODBC Data Source Administrator is C:\Windows\System32\odbcad32.exe, while the 32-bit one is C:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe. The original 32-bit and 64-bit ODBC drivers are installed by the Windows operating system.
By default, there are multiple 32-bit ODBC drivers and fewer 64-bit ODBC drivers installed on a 64-bit platform. To get more ODBC drivers, we can install the 2007 Office System Driver: Data Connectivity Components or Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 Redistributable.

A very basic question regarding data block

Hi All,
I've a very basic question concerning data blocks in oracle forms 10g.
I want to make a view only screen (only query allowed, no update, insert or delete).
I'll have 6-7 fields on the screen but all the fields are not from a single table.
For e.g, let say we've field names to display on the screen are f1, f2, f3, f4..
Out of this f1 and f2 will come from table A and f3, f4 will come from table B.
Now, my question : Is it possible to create a data block using the data block wizard for such situation if we select create data block from table options?
If no, can you please tell me an approach to do this.

First write your query & select datablock property.
just change the below properties
Query Data Source Type=From Clause Query
Query Data Source Name = (Paste query here)
now you should add the block ITEMs and give their names according to query columns names. shows the column on canvas and run..

Basic questions on iPhone apps. Please help!

Hey I have a few semi-basic questions about iPhone apps. If you know the answers to any of them please respond as it would help me ton. Even if you dont know the exact answer, it'll help me with any input. Trapster is a good example of what im looking for because it uses a map and it receives/sends small amounts of data constantly.
1) How much on average does it cost to hire a group of people to code an app for you. Specifically, how much do you think the app Trapster took to program? Are there any specific other apps you know how much it took to code? I need estimates, because I have nothing. A number like 50,000 would help a ton more other then saying "it depends" .....
2) Apps like Trapster, send and receive small amounts of data all the time? What controls all of this data? Im guessing a server. But what are the server's specs? How many? Price per month?
3) With 3.0 SDK now out, you are now allowed to implement google maps into 3rd party applications. Now I know you cannot use it for turn-by-turn navigation. But can you still use the directions feature already on google maps? Can you still use the search feature to search for a restaurant as well? Or maybe you can just see the map and thats it. Does anyone know exactly what you can use with google maps or know where there is more information? Ive tried everywhere.
4) Just tell me if this is correct: You can add advertisements into your app. On average, for every 1000 times your app gets opened, you get about 1.00-2.00. So if your app gets opened 2,000,000 times you get $2,000 from advertising if you get 1.00/1000. Is that accurate as an average?
5) Since 3.0 now supports push notifications, would you be able to have anything at all running in the backround? For example, on trapster, if you approach a red light camera, the app beeps. With 3.0, if you are on the home screen and approaching the camera, is there a way of getting the iphone to beep even though your just on the iphones main screen or any other screen? Im guessing not because in order to receive the push the iphone needs to know your current location and the location of the camera, which is why the app would need to be running. Incase im wrong is there a way of doing this?
6) If an app is free and does not do advertising, does it make any money? If so how?

Could be a book deal after you spend your young/old life crossing the divide - could be a marriage proposal that brings great wealth - could be a cabinet position with a station in a foreign tax haven.

As for cost, pull a number out of your hat and then double it...then double it again. Same goes for time, staff and delays.

In java home directory it contains bin and jre forlders.
In both of the folders java.exe file is there.
What is the use of having the same file in both directiory......

One probaly came with the JDK, and one came with the complete JRE that's included in the JDK...

Please help with basic questions

I hardly ever use flash, as i'm always ending up kicking
stuff out of sheer frustration. Just like with Quark Xpress, in
Flash there seem to be several 'layers' between what my intuition
tells me should work, and the actual execution of the things i want
to achieve. But nevermind, I'm just severely annoyed.
I got 10 buttons, with a graphic as bottomlayer, and a number
(1-10). Isn't it possible to turn the first button into a symbol,
and then make copies where i just have to change the number? For
now it doesn't matter if i copy/paste them or drag them from the
library, when i copy the button and try to change the number in the
copy, then the number in the 'original' changes as well.
Do i really have to 'make' each button from scratch?
This might seem like a very basic question, but i'm really
bangin my head into the wall here. And theres tons og issues like
that in Flash - for me at least - like if i say 'paste in place',
things get pasted some random place on the canvas (anywhere but in
place). If i convert to symbol, the referencepoint (or the point
which it's supposed to rotate around) seems randomly choosen as
well - at least it's never where i told it to be in the appropriate
dialog.

Go to the library and there should be an arrow in the corner
that gives you options. One option is "duplicate symbol." Duplicate
your button and give it a new name, then make the changes.

BASIC QUESTIONS - VERY URGENT

I have some basic questions regarding Oracle XMLDB's features.
Is there a special JOIN clause that can be used in Oracle XMLDB?
Can we create partitions in a set of records that are all based on the same DTD? How do we query records from a particular partition?
Is it possible to query records with synonyms of words present in the documents (some sort of a dictionary feature)?
Is it possible to query records based on the hierarchical directory structure using which the documents have been stored? i.e. can we query all documents that are stored in a specific path (including/excluding subdirectories)?
Can we select a particular field within the XML document to be the primary key? Can the documents be indexed based on this field?
What is the general performance of XMLDB like? For a database of the order of say 50-100 million XML records, would the performance be better with oracle XMLDB or with oracle RDBMS + some XML-RDB mapping tool?
It would be good if any one could help me out.

Please review the Oracle XML DB basic demo, it will answer some of your questions.
To answer some of your questions.
XML DB is architected to work with documents that are based on an XML SChema rather than a DTD...
If you documents are not based on a schema you will need to store them as CLOB Based XMLtype. At this point you will be better off storing then in a relational table with an XMLType column, rather than an XMLType table. You can add other columns to this table for partioning purposes...
You can query documents based on an Hierarchy, but only if they are schema based. Non schema based XML would be stored in the repository, Again it can be queried in terms of the heirarchy, but you cannot control the partioning on non schema based XML stored in the XML DB repository.
You can have a PK only with Schema based XML. You can partition Schema based XML on any element that is not part of a collection.

Hello,
For your own practice you can download the free version of SAP Netweaver ABAP in the downloads section of SCN. This is only for ABAP development. You wont find many of the stadard tables and functionalities with in it. IDES should be containing all the modules. But again that depends on the licesnse with which you are provided.
Your questions have no relevance from the ABAP technical point of view except the first one which is a basic question and should be asked here as per the forum rules. Thats the reason why you were suggested to read the forum rules.

Basic Questions About CSM

Hi,
We have a CSM installed in a 6513 chassis working as our load balancer for web servers. I have a few basic questions:
1. The current default configuration of probes on our switch indicates 2 minutes interval, 3 consecutive errors before marking real server failure and 5 minutes between probes of failed server. This setting results in 10-12 minute switch over delay in case one server fails.
In one of the Cisco papers I read that the default for these parameters in CSM is 8 seconds, 2 retries and 5 seconds, respectively.
My question is what is the default settings for probe parameters and is there any recommendation for a optimal settings? (I am going to use 1min, 3, 15seconds resulting 0.5 to 1.5 minutes delay and want to make sure there is no concerns with that)
2. Does the sticky timeout affect the switch over delay time? My understanding is that sticky timeour applies to the normal condition when all legs are up and in case of a failure, the traffic will switch over regardless of an existing active sticky session. Is this correct?
3. What is the exact definition of a "connection" in a load balancer? Is there any way to estimate or predict the number of connections for a specific traffic load (e.g. number of connection per user)?

Regarding your current questions :
1/ The default for an icmp probe is 120sec, 3 retries and 300sec for failed.
You can use whatever values you think is necessary for your environment.
However, you need to remember that a probe generates traffic and each probe require process CPU time to send and receive.
With a lot of servers you probably want to avoid low frequency values.
I think your suggested value of 1 minute is ok.
2/ the sitcky timeout does not affect failover.
However, you should be aware that if a server goes dowm, the CSM will send NEW connections to the other servers. But active connection will stay with this server even if down. To change this behavior use the 'failaction purge' command.
3/ A connection is a flow. It is defined by a SRC IP, DST IP, protocol, SRC PORT, DST PORT.
Within a connection you can send 2 bytes or 2 Gig.
So, it is difficult to link the 2 values.
ie: when you load a webpage, if you are using http 1.0 you open 1 connection for every object (text, gif, banner, ...) but with http 1.1 you can download all the same objects in a single connection.

VERY Basic Questions about Oracle eBusiness - what "languages" are used?

Please forgive the very basic nature of this post- (I have been in systems (IT) for over 20 years, so I do have lots of systems experience, but no exposure to this particular software.)
So here are the basic questions - I assume that much of the data base logic is written in PL/SQL, but what other tools / languages are the applications written in?
(Oracle Forms, Oracle Reports, Java, C, something else?)
With over 20 years and experience with a number of other packages, I can learn a great deal about an application by 1. Looking at the DB structures (charts), 2. looking into DB code (Packages, triggers, procedure, functions) and 3. Seeing the screen shots.
None of my customers have had Oracle eBusiness - that have had home grown applications or other COTS/packages.
can anyone suggest a place where an independent person can inexpensively get some exposure?

MapViewer - A team of newbies and definitely basic questions...

Dear All,
We are a team of programmers who are very new to MapViewer. We are an experienced team of GIS programmers, however, we find difficulty in applying known functions to MapViewer. It's a great application, but a lot of unknowns.
We have very basic questions, as well as advanced ones. I would like to summarize them as follows:
1. How can I let the map to be zoomed into a specific feature?
2. How can I execute a query to find a specific feature?
3. How can I execute network analysis query to find the shortest path or paths between two or more nodes?
4. How can I find out the nearest node to the location when user clicks on an arbitrary location on the map?
5. How can I execute generic queries, without (this is important) need to send/receive XML queries?
6. The bottomline is: we just want to use ready made functions to make it as easy as possible.
Anyhelp is greatly appreciated. We are stuck with the basics of MapViewer (Oracle Maps).
Please help us find the light :)

Here are some quick answers, hopefully they are not too late.
1. You will construct a theme (mostly a dynamic one) that contains the specific feature, then call the theme's setBoundingTheme(true). Typically what we see people do is: a) create a dynamic theme with a query that selects a set of features; b) create a FOI layer based on the theme (MVThemeBasedFOI); c) call the setBoundingTheme(true) on the FOI layer. The end result, is that MapViewer will process your query and return the FOI data to the Oracle Maps JavaScript client, which will zoom the map to include the set of features in the FOI layer. Check out Oracle Maps tutorial #35 for an example.
2. This is partly answered above. Basically you will construct a theme with a dynamic query string. You may want to check out tutorial #37 which finds out and displays the buffers around a set of points; the buffers are constructed via a SQL query at run time.
3. This is not really a MapViewer question; rather, you may need to consult the Oracle Spatial routing engine XML API; the gist is you send the XML route request to the routing server, which returns a set of coordinates for your directions, which you can construct (MapViewer) FOI objects out of and display them on the map.
4. I'm not sure our routing engine or network data model API has such a function ready for use; what you can do is if you can formulate the SQL query string (with the current location represented as a binding variable), then you can create a theme out of this query condition, and simply supply the location at run time to get the set of nodes.
5. Can you please elaborate on what do you mean by generic queries? A simple usage scenario will help.
6. We understand; there are quite a lot of things that can be made easier out of the box and we are working towards that. in the mean time, just ask questions if you have them; and always check out the Oracle maps tutorials first (actually reading the MapViewer primer article should be the absolute first step :) ).

Can an employee have more than one manager? : the question is a bit more complex if you consider using the positioni management or if you consider the dotline manager as a second manager. Basically, an employee can have as many manager as needed using the capacity to create several employee record for a same employee, at the same time.
can an employee work in more than one department? : yes, using the multiple employee record feature (one employee can have several employee records and then potentially can work in several department, company, having several manager, be in different locations ...).
