Basic Questions for Getting Started

I want to make a DVD with a menu that will link to video files that will not be compressed at DVD SD size 720 x 480 (I think that is the right size for DVD?) Instead, I need to make the window size of the videos smaller so I can fit as many as possible on a single-layer disc.
1. Will there be any issues with linking to video files that are not full screen, whether it is played in a computer DVD or a home one?
2. What is the best format for bringing video in from FCP for doing this? I am guessing that since DVD SP compresses as MPG-2, I should bring the video in a non-compressed format so it does not get double compressed.
3. Does anyone have any recommendations for a smaller window size that displays well on screen? 400 by something???
Thanks for any help in advance!!!

1. Will there be any issues with linking to video
files that are not full screen, whether it is played
in a computer DVD or a home one?
I can only suggest that you try it and see, or ask on the Final Cut Pro discussion forum and someone there will know.
2. What is the best format for bringing video in from
FCP for doing this? I am guessing that since DVD SP
compresses as MPG-2, I should bring the video in a
non-compressed format so it does not get double
compressed.
Yes. You should bring it into DVD SP as a QT file (.mov) which you export from Final Cut, presumably using the option "using QT Compression" which I think gives options for size. However, I have never had luck when using the QT compression option. There may be other utilities which can reduce the size of a QT movie.
I suppose that you know to use Compressor to make a more efficient compression than the one built in to DVD SP, and to use APack (or whatever it is called in DVD SP 4) to compress sound - that saves a lot of disc space.

  • Basic Questions on Getting Started with MDK

What I discover at this point is that I can't see any sign of the MDK in Eclipse. There is an article that talks about installing the MDK, but what it really talks about is installing the client engine. For the process, you need a live SAP Web Server to talk to-- i.e., a backend.
I don't see any samples that were downloaded with the MDK. It just consists of a set of plugin jar files for Eclipse. No samples whatsoever.
I'm not sure where to go from here. A contact at SAP would be helpful to help me figure out what it is I need to look at.
One thing I have found out: The SAP Mobile Infrastructure (MI), which is what I am looking at, is for developing either thin client applications using JSP or fat client Java programs, both of which rely on a local run-time engine that talks to a real SAP backend. It would be impossible to do any development or even run a pre-built application without having a backend to talk to.
We do not have SAP installed, so we need some help with connecting to a backend system and getting the MDK properly installed. Thanks.

    Hi Brent,
First of all, thanks for checking out the MDK.
If you want to use the MDK, you can install the SAP NetWeaver Developer Studio (NWDS). You can see the MDK in the Help menu item. From there, you will be able to navigate the MDK documentation.
I strongly suggest you to use NWDS instead of Eclipse. MDK is a set of documentation, tutorials and examples; together with a plug-in for the IDE to develop MI-based mobile application.
Mobile Infrastructure comprises of a client and server components. The MI Client component runs on the mobile device while the MI Server Component runs on the "middleware" server (ie: the SAP Web Application Server). Starting SAP NetWeaver 2004, the MI 2.5 Server component ships with the SAP WebAS 6.40. You will need a backend server (eg: R/3, ERP2004, etc.) to get the business data as well.
You can check out the MI online documentation for more information:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/a7/893a5889e08b41b615688b1a93b559/frameset.htm
    Hope that helps.

  • One basic question to get started.

    Hi,
I am a web developer for a long time. Now want to learn Java to code JSP. One question.
What should I know to code JSP. To create comple dynamic website.
    anyone please

I suggest reading a book cover to cover on JSP/servlets. Then download and install Eclipse IDE and tomcat and the Eclipse tomcat plugin. Then create a hello world jsp, then hello world servlet. Then install Oracle Lite (or similar free database). Then implement a web application per my previous post at http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10786901 Then, refactor it over and over. Next, read a book on Spring framework and create a new project with it.

  • Basic question on getting started

I'm new to iMovie 09, I'm finally making the leap from '06 but I don't know where to start. Do I do my editing in the Event Library or the Project Library? What's the process? I'm lost without my '06 timeline.

I noticed that when I placed my first marker (at the 2nd point of the movie) it labelled it "1". Is 09 the same as 06 in that I shouldn't place a chapter marker at the beginning?
I have had no problem putting chapter markers at the beginning in iMovie 06 (or iMovie 09). I just re-tried it on a iMovie 06 project I am doing now (iDVD 09 took it fine).

  • What's a good book for getting started?

I've been doing web design in HTML and ColdFusion for almost 3 years. It's clear that ColdFusion is on it's way out and I need to learn J2EE/Java/JSP etc. I have a few questions:
Java is a term I've heard associated with C++ and other types of programming as well as Web design. Are the Java/C++ Java and the Web Java basically the same type of language? Is the Web Java and JavaScript the same thing? I'm very confused!
What is a good book for getting these types of questions answered and getting started in J2EE/Java/JSP? There are quite a few variations of script languages out there and I want to make sure I learn the right stuff, ie the stuff that employers are going to be needing.
    Thanks!

Here is a free online version of a good book:
    http://pdf.coreservlets.com/Core-Servlets-and-JSP.pdf
Print it off or read from the screen. Otherwise, there are several good Java books out there. What I would do is go to the bookstore and thumb through a few books. Depending on what type of book you want (example based or theory) find the books that you think would satisfy your learning style. Write down the names and authors, go home and buy them used online at Amazon for tremendous discounts. This way you can buy several versus just one.

  • General questions to get started with virtualization server cluster.

Hello all, this is my first time posting here in the tech net forums. I am a software development student and have been spending most of my time lately in Linux.  First I would like to apologize if I am at all not complying with the forum ethics or
protocol based on the fact that I am rushing to get this post in and wasn't able to do as much reading as I would normally like before posting. If my questions seem to be to noobish feel free to just tell me so.  That being said, I would appreciate some
help. My systems have been down now for the better part of a month with trying to figure out, not how to configure the system I want, but rather to find a system to configure and be able to stick with it without running into issues that make me start researching
    a whole new system.
So for a quick explanation of what I am trying to accomplish:
I am looking to utilize the equipment I have, and put together a small virtual machine host.  The last few weeks I was working on building a Proxmox cluster which overall seemed to be pretty close to what I want, however the compatibility just isn't
there yet in my eyes for a home use server.  I am trying to take basically the 5 or 6 PCs that I have already built, and configure them into a cluster that will be able to hopefully utilize as much system resource as possible.  From what I have learned
in recent, this is referred to as a Beowulf cluster, or just a virtualization cluster.  So ideally I want to combine the 5-6 processors to form one "super computer" that will serve as nothing but a virtual machine host.  I am sorry if I
am using the wrong terms for any of this but like I said, I am just trying to figure it all out still.  What is the best Microsoft OS to use to do this?  I am currently looking at either Server 2012 R2, but I have also looked briefly into Systems
Center 2012 R2 and really like the look of this.  This is just for my personal use.  The reason I am looking to do this is that I currently use many different OSs and have many different tasks that require different configurations.  The bulk
of the work I am doing, coding, 3D rendering, video editing, a lot of Autodesk and Adobe work.  Then of course I would like to be able to do some gaming still but haven't even begun to research to feasibility of gaming on a VM because of course my main
priority is the work.  So is there a way that I can pull this off?  I am planning to start purchasing some server racks, like a 9 or 12U wall mount rack that I was planning on putting about 4 or 5 2U atx cases in.  Right now in my small office
I have 5 fully built atx towers and then multiple laptops and tablets and chrome books and bla blah!  It is just too much so I am looking for a way to consolidate.  Also, regarding the 3D rendering, if there is a way to utilize multiple processors
at once in this same config, that would be great.  I have again done some research on "render farms" which sounds similar to a Beowulf but I just need to focus in an area that I can research more thoroughly because right now I just keep jumping
around every time I think I have found a better solution.  Please help!  Thank you very much to anyone who takes the time to help me with this task.  It is very much appreciated!

  • Mind answering some basic questions for a few bright HS students?

I am a HS computer science teacher who seeks a professional mentor regarding JDBC. While I have successfully
    - installed a MySQL database,
    created, queried, updated the database,
    - read the Java Tutorial and:
used Connect/J and written a main method to manipulate a
    database
created very simple applets to query or update a database with
    their run methods.
I have basic questions about how pieces fit together in web application development and how one can best take advantage of OOP when dealing with a database. My motivation are a few very bright post-AP students who have an excellent grasp of OOP and data structures; they are curious to see how Java is used in web applications.
The sample code I have found on the Web has all been small main method examples. I would like to see and discuss a truly OOD application with JDBC, and to discuss how the pieces fit together.
So, aware of our ignorance and of how dangerous a little knowledge can be, and not expecting to go live with an application anytime soon, we seek a very high level understanding of current professional practice (like: "Where does tomcat fit in here?") as well as some direction while we get our hands dirty. (I hope that makes sense.)
If you have time to correspond with us via e-mail, answer some very basic questions, and perhaps take a look at some code as we work through it, we would love to hear from you off-line ([email protected]). We would also appreciate knowing where to look for a good OOD sample application. Thanks.

Complete this tutorial and you will have a much better understanding.

  • ADVICE FOR GETTING STARTED IN RECORDING

I have just purchased a new IMAC 24 inch 2.4 core duo with 4 gigs of ram. I was wondering what a good setup would be in getting started in home recording, would a good audio interface such as the presonus firestudio, with garageband be good, or something like presonus firestudio, with logic studio, be better, or maybe apogee ensemble, with logic studio? We will be doing some song writing, and recording a band. Any help would be appreciated. Like I said totally new to this.

    TCHADWELL wrote:
Hey thanks for replying, garageband is a pretty cool app. and I would not mind starting in that , what ever I start in to learn, I want to stick with that and learn it. How much of a learning curve will it be to go from garageband once I learn it, to logic? Audio quality is going to be important for song demos and ect.
The thing about GarageBand is that there's virtually no learning curve. It uses the same sound engine as Logic, but with a distilled interface that boils everything down to basics. Also, the latest upgrade to GB makes it less of a toy, and if you wanted to get started recording your band today you could plug and play into GB and do your thing with minimal technical distraction.
Logic has a bigger learning curve because it lets you control a million more things, but if you are motivated to learn it, that shouldn't be a problem. I actually enjoy learning and using Logic and you might too. Logic Studio also comes bundled with many extras that make it a terrific deal. You could always start recording in GB while you learned Logic, or just jump right into Logic if you were motivated to dive into the deep end first!
As far as interfaces go, as a practical matter, I think you would need to figure out if you're all you going to play and record together as a band, and if you have enough inputs for that. If you weren't going to use a separate mixer, the interface would need enough inputs to accommodate all the cables that were carrying signals from you instruments and voice(s).
The NRV-10 is very flexible for rehearsing + recording, although you would get better sound quality from either the Ensemble or FireFace. I would guess the Firestudio hovers around the NRV-10 in terms of sound quality. The truth however is that any of this stuff will likely sound good enough especially as you are just getting started. While it's easy for pros to wax poetic over master clocks and vintage pres, the fundamental technology has advanced to the point that any of these interfaces in the Firestudio range on up is going to enable anyone just starting out to get terrific results. And after you have some experience, and find that you have a specific need or want to lift the audio quality of a particular component, then there's a world of gear out there clamoring for your Benjamins .
So if it were me, I'd want to make sure that whatever I was getting was compatible with my system, could accommodate my inputs, and had sound quality that was good enough for my immediate goals. Also, as you are just starting out, I can almost guarantee you that you will need things that you don't yet realize you need. So whatever your budget is you should leave a little wiggle room for unanticipated expenses.

  • Exchange 2013 Site Resilience - Basic questions for setup in two seperate AD Sites, same domain

I am just getting ramped up with Exchange 2013 and have a friend that I am assisting with planning an exchange 2013 deployment for.  I am not asking for step by step directions for setup, just asking for a basic overview so I can dig in to this and
    assist.
Goal is to have an exchange server, one in NC and one in Switzerland in an active/passive mode for site resilience.  Both servers will be multi role servers.
This is a small organization, less than 50 users and on a budget for equipment.  HQ is in NC and the server will have all roles installed on a single server. Switzerland will have only one Exchange server for fail over.  There is only
one domain total with two AD Sites.
    My questions for clarity -
    1. Can I create a Site resilient deployment with two Exchange Multi Role servers in these locations?
    2. Currently, the organization does not have a Load Balancer.  Will this be required?
    3. They do not have a third location for a Witness Server, what issues could potentially happen if the witness sits in one of the two sites?
    4. Any other basics for this design are much appreciated.  I am reading a lot, however a little confused as I read through the requirements.
Thanks for your input and direction!

    Hi
Please find below answers to your questions.
    1. Can I create a Site resilient deployment with two Exchange Multi Role servers in these locations?
    Yes
    2. Currently, the organization does not have a Load Balancer.  Will this be required?
No you don't need to have a load balancer. As you are setting up the infrastructure in Active / Passive mode you don't need a dedicated LB for this.
    3. They do not have a third location for a Witness Server, what issues could potentially happen if the witness sits in one of the two sites?
The issue with the witness server in primary or DR site is if your witness server is not responding your DAG won't work properly (failover). If you don't have a 3rd site then you can setup a witness server in your primary site and Alternate witness server
    to your DR site.
    4. Any other basics for this design are much appreciated.  I am reading a lot, however a little confused as I read through the requirements.
I would recommend to use Exchange sizing calculator and technet is the best resource for you :)
Kindly mark this as answer if it fulfill your requirements. :)

  • Basic questions for a self-taught re: HDV for SD HDV (yes again)

ok - like many others posting on this topic, I am apologising for going over what seems to be one of the most covered topics out there, that still isn't clear!
I am trying to teach myself DVD SP4 in the same way I did with FCP5 (trial, error and lots of forum searching). I am by no means a pro on FCP - but have certainly got enough understanding of it to have cobbled together 7 23 minutes episodes to broadcast! I have gone thought the DVD SP4 Manual and forums and lots of it just makes my brain ache - what mostly lets down my understanding are formats/compression/codecs.
So - my main questions (for now....)
-In DVD SP I couldn't import my QT movie into my assets list as it was an "incompatible format" - is this because it was HDV to a SD DVD Project? Doesn't the process of DVD SP encoding it as Mpeg 2 make is SD anyway?
-I read a post from someone in a similar situation, who advised exporting a HDV sequence as Uncompressed 8 Bit, and bringing that to DVD SP. So am doing that now (6 hours or so for a 23" sequence) and am hoping it gives a great looking picture, but I have seen from its preview icon that its a 720 x 576 frame - why is it not exporting in 16:9? or will it squeeze that down to normal once it's in DVD SP?
Really appreciate any understand you can help me with.
    cheers
    Hugh

    Hughey wrote:
Going back to my original questions - could the problem be a HD file in an SD project?
No. If you followed the workflow process from the above post you would have a SD mv2 file. The file should be playable in Quicktime and it should be 16:9.
EDIT: Yes. Reading back on your OP this question ->
In DVD SP I couldn't import my QT movie into my assets list as it was an "incompatible format" - is >this because it was HDV to a SD DVD Project? Doesn't the process of DVD SP encoding it as Mpeg 2 >make is SD anyway?
I believe that importing a HDV file into a SD project would give you that error but if you follow the above steps and import the mv2, AC3 files you should not get that error.
The reason you got three files is because that is how the preset group is made up. To be completely truthful I duplicated that preset, deleted the AIFF part and renamed the group. I now use that as my default settings when I bring any asset into Compressor.
As far as bring video assets (quicktime SD/HD, or other) into DVDSP in general you can do this but, what is happing is that in the background DVDSP is going through the steps from my above post and creating the mv2, AIFF, AC3 files for you (based on your preference setting in DVDSP) and then replacing the video files you brought in with the compressed files.
Can you play the mv2 file in quicktime? If not then something else must be going wrong.

How did you go about taking care of this? I have an Apple Retail store just a few miles from me. Do I go there or do I need to call Apple Care first?

I'm sure they don't deny walk-ins..but to ensure that you get the attention you need. It's recommended that you do. Believe me, I walk into my Apple Stores..(I have 2 less than 3 miles from me)..and you wouldn't believe the customers there with their iPhones asking questions about this and that...! I mean they're all not "technical questions" either. Anything from BT to what case is better, etc.
