Basic Setup with Two Computers and an Xserve

I'm using a MacBook Pro, a MacPro, and an Xserve. I'm running Gigabit ethernet, and have a general set up question for Qmaster. I'd like to be able to submit jobs from both the MacBook and MacPro to the cluster I create. How do I set up Qmaster on the these two machines? QuickCluster with services, services cluster controller, or services only? Also, what is the correct setting for the Xserve?
The Xserve it probably the faster box here, so I want to take advantage of it.
Thanks!

Make sure in the Qmaster preferences screen you have the maximum number of instances selected for all boxes (you might not want to max out your laptop if you're working from it at the same time)
I would put the Xserve as Controller + services, then services only for the other two boxes. Open Qadministrator on any box - build a new cluster and put your three boxes to the cluster and select the controller then hit apply.
on a side note - you do NOT want to take a walk with your laptop when you're in a transcoding..... so make sure if you're in the middle of a compression that you don't need your laptop.

  • Technofool with two computers and two ipods!!!

Ok, its similar to the thread about two ipods and one pc, but I have a pc and a laptop, an old 20g ipod with about 4,500 song on it and now I got a Touch for xmas.
The question is: I want to put my library (4,500 songs) onto the laptop. How can I transfer music from the pc/20g onto the laptops library so I can then transfer some of the music to the new Touch. Confused? That makes two of us!
Alls I want is all my stuff on both computers and both ipods.
Please reply as if you are speaking to a child, nice and simple! Thanks.

Probably the most straightforward way to get iTunes onto your new computer is to network it with the old one and copy your iTunes folder across. This works fine if you have been using iTunes to completely manage your music and all your songs are in iTunes Music not in different folders. You can also use this method with an external hard drive, you drag the folder from the old computer to the external drive and then from the drive to the new computer. If the songs in your library are not all in the iTunes Music folder you can consolidate them. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them: Copying all your iTunes files to one location - Windows
Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the same location on the new computer. This has to be the exact same place, on a PC this is \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will be the same as on the original one Songs, Playlists, Play Counts, Ratings etc. When I moved iTunes a while ago for my daughter I was also using the same version of iTunes, not sure how important that is but it's probably worth keeping them the same.
Your older iPod can also be used as an external drive and you can move the iTunes folder onto it: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer

  • Library on external drive with two computers and a backup...

    Hi there,
I'm a video editor (and Adobe Cloud user) and I'm about to start using Lightroom for my photographs.
I don't want to have my photos in the same place as my other projects just to keep everything sorted.
    My question's are:
    1. Can I put everything (photos and catalog) on an external hard drive?
    This shouldn't be a problem I think.
    2. Can I use this one hard drive and switch between my desktop and laptop? Both have the latest version of Lightroom.
    3. Can I use CarbonCopyCloner to backup everything to a second hard drive in case hard drive 1 fails?
And if hard drive 1 crashes continue working on hard drive 2 without any problems?
    Thanks a lot

    Yes, yes and yes.
If tragedy strikes and drive 1 fails and drive 2 is put in its place, if drive 2 is identified with a different letter (Windows) or name (Mac), Lightroom will need to be redirected to the new location  for the catalog and photos, but this is easily done. Same thing could apply when switching the external from desktop to laptop if the drive letter/name differs between the two machines, but they can be set to always use the same letter to identify the drive.

  • Mighty mouse with two computers

Is there a way to pair a Mighty Mouse with two computers and to them switch back and forth between them easily? I realize I could unpair from one and then pair with the other, but I’m trying to use a Mighty Mouse in lieu of a KVM switch with a wired mouse.

Yes and no. It all depends on the device, and I can't speak from experience when it comes to the Mighty Mouse, but I can speak from experience with other Bluetooth devices.
You can pair a device with multiple computers, but you cannot use it with multiple computers simultaneously. When switching, you'll have to tell your computer to disconnect from the mouse before the other computer can connect to it. Since we're talking about a mouse, reconnecting the mouse might be a little tricky, if you want to use only one. Perhaps adding something like an Optimus Mini Three (or similar HID) with an AppleScript attached to one of the buttons to trigger mouse reconnection could work.
There are software based solutions to your problem, enabling you to connect any HID (Human Input Device) to your computer, and then use a virtual KVM over the network. I've seen a few pieces of software like this in the Apple Downloads Database, but I don't know if they're free.

  • Proper setup for using two computers and backup drives?

I've just purchased Aperture 3 and want to fix a longstanding problem I've had with my workflow and setup in Lightroom. I've got an iMac and a MBP and what I'd like to do is use the iMac as my main computer for Aperture. My plan is to import my existing files into Aperture and copy them to an external (non-portable) hard drive for back-up purposes. Based on this, I'd have two copies of each file, one each on the iMac and the back-up drive, right?
I also use my MBP for a lot of photo editing work while on the road, but don't have a lot of drive space on it. I've bought a 750GB hard drive and I'd like to have the Library on this drive as well for use on the MBP. I know this would give me three copies of each file, but it would also give me some peace of mind in the event I somehow lost the info on the 750GB drive. I don't want copies of the images on the MBP directly as I don't have enough space.
Can this setup be "easily" done and if I make a change in an image on one computer will it be synchronized between the two computers and the two external hard drives? I guess in plain English, what I'd like to achieve is the ability to work on either computer and have the most recent versions synchronize when I attach the 750GB drive to the iMac, with the non-portable external drive as the back-up for the synchronized Library.
Thanks in advance for any help,
    Kevin

No, vaults only look after a managed library. A referenced library has to be backed up manually.
There are a few reasons i prefer to use a referenced set up. I use a MBPro on the road for long periods and sometimes high volumes of large image files, so the limited capacity HD is no longer a problem.
Aperture does not slow down with a referenced library as the HD fills.
The Vaults cannot be accessed like manual back ups can, there is no way of knowing what is in there, you hope it is your entire Aperture library.
With manual project backup you have a more manageable size that is much more versatile, and is viewable because of its smaller size. You can delete stuff and then restore it from the backup.
It is safer in my opinion to not have all the library in a single library folder. Much safer split up by project.
When i did use a managed library and Vaults there were times when i wanted stuff off the Aperture library but still kept in the vault, which was not possible.

  • I got a new computer and now iTunes is telling me it can't sync with two computers

I got a new computer and now iTunes is telling me it can't sync with two computers, it's telling me it will erase what's on my iPad and re-sync. Will I lose my iPad data that's on it?

No - not at all. Look at that one app that I gave you the link for. That is supposed to transfer all of the iPad content to the new computer. I have no idea how much it costs, but it's worth a look. There are other out there as well. Google "apps to transfer iPad content to computer" or something to that effect. These apps claim to transfer everything.
Several things to remember - you can still transfer all of the iTunesicon tent that you purchased by using the Transfer Purchases option in iTunes. Just remember to turn off auto syncing before you do it. You will also have to authorize your new computer to transfer the purchase if you haven't done so already. From the iTunes menu on your computer go to Store> Authorize this computer.
Plus any apps or music that you have bought can be downloaded again at no charge with the cloud feature in the latest iPad iOS.
EDIT - I see that you did transfer the purchases. Look at one of those apps that I described and they should be able to get you set up. You should also invest in an external hardrive for backing up all of your computer content ... don't want this to happen again!

My i-Pad won't charge after I downloaded some stuff from i-Tunes.  I have tried charging through two computers and using the wall socket,, with different cables.  I have turned the i-Pad off & on a couple of times but it still won't charge.  Any ideas will be gratefully received.

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. I bought a new computer and I cannot transfer my library to this new one. The message says that I'm not allowed to sync with two computers??? How can I delete the previous one from my account???

You cannot transfer from the iPhone to the computer.
You must move the contents of your old computer to the new one directly.
Use an external hard drive perhaps or restore your old computer backup to your new computer.
The iPhone is not the source of your data, that is the computer, the iPhone is only a slave device to iTunes.

  • How to sync with two computers not at the same time, I'm registerd with one computer

How to sync with two computers (not at the same time), I'm registered with one computer and am trying to connect with second computer with same iPhone. To sync the first time with the second PC "Firefox Sync Option tells me Create New account or Connect, when I connect it gives me a Passcode and on iPhone it also gives me a Passcode, than how do I connect? Both the iPhone and PC gives me a Passcode and have now idea what to do with them.
Where do I find my Sync Key ? so I can install manually if it works ?

Use the Sync Key ''(Recovery Key)'' from the PC that you used to initially setup your Firefox Sync service, when setting up that 2nd PC with Sync. You need to use '''Add a device''' to setup the 2nd and subsequent devices on a Sync account. <br />

  • Technical question:  Is it possible to work on the same Lightroom catalog across two computers and have the catalog sync? If so, how??

    Technical question:
Is it possible to work on the same Lightroom catalog across two computers and have the catalog sync? If so, how??
Here's a little more information on what I am trying to do.
I have a desktop computer with 4tb worth of pictures that has Lightroom and Photoshop on it. I also have a laptop with Photoshop and Lightroom. I would like to be able to edit those same pictures with their current edits that are currently on my desktop on my laptop. If this can be done, I'm sure I need to be on the same wifi network for my laptop to be able to access my desktop's photo library. I am technically savvy enough to map a network drive, but how do I get my two Lightroom catalogs to sync when I make a change on one of my computers? Would i be working only on one catalog? Or two separate catalogs that would need to be manually synced to the other computer? Would it be beneficial to put my lightroom catalog on something like dropbox?
I'd appreciate any information or tutorials if someone knows how to do this.

I do this by having my LR catalog and photos on an external drive that I swap between the two computers.  I am on Windows and have the same drive letter assigned to the drive on both computers.
Because the photos are on a portable drive I back up the portable drive to another hard-drive every night or after important work, because portable drives are susceptible to damage or loss.

  • Solution to syncing with two computers

i have a client who wanted to sync her addresses, datebook, mail etc at her office and her music and photos at home. i was told by many many people at apple that this was impossible.
finally i got a great iphone guy on the phone who said sure, you can do that. i thought i would post what he told me in case anyone else wants to do this.
it seems pretty obvious now but....
with the phone plugged it, go through all the things to sync and only click the ones you want to sync on that computer. on the summary page, under options, only click the second option...only sync checked items.
this worked flawlessly ...hope this can save someone some reasearch time....

    It works. Make sure you:
    1. Select "Disable automatic syncing for all iPhones" under Edit / Preferences / iPhone in the iTunes menu.
    2. Uncheck "Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected" in the Summary tab of iTunes.
    3. Check "Only sync checked items" in the same tab.
    4. On the computer you want to sync contacts and calendar, check the corresponding boxes in the Info tab. UNCHECK everything else in the MUSIC, PHOTOS, PODCASTS and VIDEO tabs.
    5. Sync your iPhone with this computer FIRST.
    6. On your other computer, follow the same steps above (1, 2 and 3). Then, UNCHECK everything in the INFO tab, and check everything else on the other tabs.
    7. When you sync with this second computer, you may get a message that the iPhone has already been synced with another computer, and that the media library will be deleted. Fine. There should be NO media library on the iPhone since you unchecked all the media items on the first computer, right?
    8. Sync. Then you can sync on both computers and each will sync what is checked and not overwrite the rest.
I have this working on two PCs with Windows XP. I have read posts of folks doing it with two Macs, and with one Mac and one PC.
This is not sanctioned by Apple, so I dont know if these steps are "correct". I only know that these are the steps I followed and worked for me. Your mileage may vary.

  • Using PalmVx with two computers

I have been using a PalmVx with my Desktop computer (WIN XP Prof) and also with my laptop (WIN XP Prof). I recently formatted the HDD of my laptop and have re-installed my palmOne software ver 4.1.4 on my laptop. While installing the palmOne software in my laptop when asked for <User Name> I gave the same Username as in my desktop computer. So now my laptop indicates the identical Username as my desktop computer.
My desktop computer is connected to the palm cradle using a serial connection while my laptop is connected through a Serial-to-USB adaptor to a USB port on my laptop.
I need to have all my data in my PalmVx transferred to my laptop, so I set all the conduits in my laptop to "Handheld overwrites Desktop" and carried out a Hotsync.
The Hotsync dialog that comes up on the laptop shows a UserName <blank> instead of the Username that I set (similar to the desktop).
Please advise how I can get all my data currently on my desktop and in my handheld into my laptop?
    TIA

Actually, there are several articles on the web about the fact that you CAN
synch the itunes with two computers. Music, Video, and Ringtones can be done from one computer, and Mail, Contacts, etc. can be done from a second computer.
Just do a Yahoo search on "synching iPhone with two computers."
If you are trying to do music from two computers, you are right, that will not work. There is a program, which I think the Yahoo search above will also uncover that allows you to do a "swap," where you can have the songs from one computer show up on the iPhone, and when you swap, the songs from the other computer show up. I am not sure if this utility survived the upgrage to version 2.0 of the softweare.

    Home PC - MacBook Pro
    Work PC - Windows
    both running iTunes 7.7
My music is on my home Mac and I manually create playlists, add music etc.
With my 3G Nano, I can connect and listen to songs on my iPod from my work PC. I can't seem to do this with my iPhone - my PC sees the iPhone but all of the music is greyed out and cannot be selected.
Is it a limitation of the iPhone that I cannot use it with two computers in this way, or is it a configuration issue?
I would prefer not to have to buy a set of external speakers just to use my iPhone to play music at work.

  • Two iTune Accounts in Two countries with Two computers

    Okay,
I have been buying and using my iPod with my Canadian account and the Canadian Music Store. I do alot of work in the US and have a US account in the US Store. I bought the "Lost" series and a few songs on the US account while setting up my new iPod Video 30GB. But the video that I bought on my canadian account is not authorized to play now that I bought on the US account.
How can I do this? I buy and do everything legally but I want to be able to share my legally bought music and content between two computers and two accounts, any suggestions?

Of course. If you have XP, you can create two user accounts, each with a different library, or make use of the Smart Playlists.
