Basic stuff -- BIOS version, Cool 'n' Quiet working?

Hi,
Okay, my new PC is up and running stable in WinXP Pro. Here are some very basic noob questions:
-How exactly do I determine my BIOS version? I thought I had v. 1.0 based on the loading screen during boot up, and SoftSandra, but MSI's Live Update says I have an equal or newer version than 1.2.
-How can I tell that Cool 'n Quiet is functioning properly? In Core Center, it appears that the CPU fan speed increases under load, but it doesn't happen right away so I'm not sure. Also, the CPU fan speed slider stays in the position I put it in manually, even after I switch back to Cool 'n Quiet (maybe this is just a GUI thing).
BTW -- I installed the Hyperion 4-in-1 drivers, enabled Cool 'n Quiet in the BIOS and set Windows power management to "minimal" -- is there anything else I need to do to enable Cool 'n Quiet functionality?
Also, should I just control the CPU fan manually through a drive bay fan controller instead of through Cool 'n Quiet?
Thanks,
-Ross

Hi
Glad to see we are down to minor bits and bobs.
The bios version should be at top of first post screen. use pause if its passes to quick.
BUT, live update checks what version you have, if there is a newer version it will tell you. there is a 1.33 available from MSI, but not on live update yet.
There are various threads on C & Q, I don't use it, but some who do like it, others confused by it, you have obviously read the threads. So you know more than me !!
Hyperion 4 in 1 is the best driver, if C & Q is working for you I would leave it be, the fan will speed up or slow down on temp. That will take a few secs time lag as chip heats up, or cools down. As long as CPU temp stays within norms, I would think is is working normally.
Enjoy it

  • KT3V bios version 1.8 not working...

I just bought a MSI KT3V mainboard (retail version) and it had bios version 1.6 pre-installed ... I tried to upgrade to version 1.8, the most recent, and at every boot it doesn't save the settings and says "checksum bad"... I thought I'd done it wrong and I tried again but it was allthesame...I also tried with version 1.7 because this was newer too and it works perfectly...Please remedy the problem, "dear" MSI team of engineers because I need a lot the "CPU Halt Command Detection" function which is present in the 1.8 version...Thank you...

Try measuring or replacing the battery. (Even though its new, I have seen bad batteries with new boards) If thats OK, redownload the bios and flash again.

  • 1.9 bios, disable Cool n quiet = no boot.

    Hi Guys,
Recently flashed to 1.9 bios, which although seems to take longer to boot, has given me 1t timings and 400mhz ram speed with my San diego core, so on that side i'm happy and my pc seems to be running sweet.
However after tweaking my bios settings after flashing (disabling unused resources, tweak ram timings etc etc) i've noticed that if if DISABLE cool n quiet in the cell menu, when i try and boot up, I get to the windows logo screen and my comp just freezes. Only way to get out is to hit hold reset switch in.
If i go back in to cell menmu and enable cool n quiet in bios (changing nothing else at all) then I can boot up fine.
I haven't loaded to cool n quiet drivers and don't really want to use it, I haven't gone into windows power management and changed anything there either, so i just want to disable it in bios if i'm not using it.
    Any one have any ideas.

You could just leave it on auto and don't use any power saving schemes (choose always on) and don't load the AMD cpu driver .
Then CnQ should not be active .
Or you could flash to 1.A3 , it's supposedly being fixed there .

  • 870A-G54 - Cool'n Quiet not working

    Hi folks,
I've just got an 870A-G54 ( http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&prod_no=2057 ) and have a Athlon II x3 450 in there. I've tried to get Cool'n Quiet working but it's simply not throttling the CPU. Both AMD Overdrive and windows system-panel show the speed to be 3.2Ghz on all three cores despite the PC idling.
    - The power-management is set to minimal.
    - Cool'n Quiet is "enabled" in the Bios - also tried "auto" to no avail.
    - I've installed the drivers from the website. Whenever I try to install them again I get a message saying they're "already installed". I can't seem to find a way to uninstall them (nothing in add/remove panel). I've even uninstalled all my other AMD processor drivers/utilities (i.e. Overdrive), but it /still/ says I have the drivers installed.
Using Windows XP SP3 32 bit.
Note: I have not, overclocked, nor do I intend to.
Any suggestions on how to remove the driver and re-install it? Or, what else may be wrong?
    Thanks.

Ok, fresh install of XP SP3 on a separate partition. Absolutely nothing changed from the base install (apart from the mouse-buttons swapped). I try and install the Cooln'Quiet drivers from the MSI website (bottom of - http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=2057 ).
When I try and install it, it gives an error saying:
"The machine does not have a supported AMD Athlon 64 Processor".
This happened with this partition of XP too, but I couldn't replicate it so thought maybe it was my memory or I was going crazy. CPU is still reporting 3.2Ghz.
The download page states: "• AMD Athlon™ 64/Sempron™/Turion™ 64/Opteron™ systems". My processor is an "Athlon II". Looking at the date and the version number, the drivers are very out-dated. The other version I aquired from who-knows-where is XP 1.3.2 for XP and almost a year later. The MSI page has 1.2.2.0. The Athlon II's date from 2009 onwards according to wikipedia.
So where do I get current Cooln'Quiet drivers?
Also, as mentioned I've tried both "Optimized" defaults and "fail-safe" defaults in the BIOS with CoolnQuiet enabled. No change.

  • K8n neo bios 1.4 temps and cool n quiet

    Hi,
I recently flashed to bios 1.4 and it has been fine thus far.  However I have two issues that may be related to this new bios.
Windows XP utilties (mbm, sandra, speedfan, even corecell) all report my temps to be in the mid 30 degrees C, however the bios reports them as 45 degrees, which should I trust?
Also I think I've gotten half of cool n quiet working, vcore is down when cpu is not doing intensive work and so is the multiplier, making it run approx 1 GHz give or take.  However, I believe that my AMD stock fan always spins around the same speed (approx 3200 rpm), regardless whether the cpu is doing intensive work or idles, is something wrong?  I have the cool, wheres the quiet where my fan is supposed to slow down?
    Any help is appreciated!

    K8N Neo Bios v1.4
512 MB PQI Turbo Black Memory

    Maxtor 60 GB

well the temperature in bios is very likely to to be above of that in windows, because cool n quiet doesnt work in bios and processor runs at normal frequencies there. The fan speed problem can be either of two things i know, first is that you haven't enabled smart cpu fan in bios and other is if you go to standby and then resume, it seems that cool n quiet works after it but mobo doesn't control the fan speed after standby. These are just some things i have noticed. The bios 1.4 is very good btw (atleast for normal use, i dont't overclock so no idea about that).

  • AMD Athlon 64 Cool and Quiet - not working

    Hello,
everything is now working on my Arch workstation, except c'n'q.
First, I searched the forum for information and tried quite a lot of things, yet it is not working.
    The following modules are loaded:
    * powernow-k8
    * cpufreq_ondemand
    As for the daemons:
    * acpid
    * cpufreqd
The CPU is always up running at full speed. In other distros I was used to daemons like powernowd who did the frequency scaling, and so I went on and pacman'ed powernowd (pkgbuild), yet it does not work. Of course c'n'q is enabled in BIOS. Btw, I also tried athcool.
I'd be glad for any help.

  • K8N Neo4-FX BIOS versions

I have been trying to get Cool'N'Quiet working on my K8N Neo4-FX.  I have the latest firmwire according to the MSI site (3.2 09.09.2005).  I for the life of me cannot find the setting in the BIOS to turn Cool'n'Quiet on.  At first I figured that I didn't need to turn it on, but after installing the AMD driver, Cool'N'Quiet refused to do its thing, so I guess the BIOS is at fault.
Are there any beta firmwares about?  Do MSI put them up on their main site?    What is the difference between the Neo4-FX and the Neo4-F, as they both seem to share the MS-7125 model number.  Can I use the 1.B firmware on the Neo4-FX......  Too many questions I know....

  • RS480M2 - Cool'n'Quiet fan control fails after hibernation

I'm using my RS480M2 as a HTPC base.
Works great (integrated s-video out is NICE!)
Cool'n'Quiet works great when the system is booted normaly but efter hibernation the fans doesn't reduse speed.
Anyone knows anything to fix this?
Maybe disable Qool'n'Quiet fan control i bios and use speedfan instead?
    My current config
    WinXP Pro SP2
Latest reference drivers for Chipset/Graphics from ATi
Latest reference drivers for sound and LAN from Realtek
    Athlon64 3200+ (90nm winchester core)
    2x512Mb twinmos DDR400 cl 2,5
    60Gb 2,5" Hitachi HDD
    Any Ideas?

I always use speedfan in the BIOS and leave C&Q enabled.
As C&Q does more then regulating the fan, it also regulates the speed of the CPU.
But you can remove corecenter for fancontrol and use speedfan in the BIOS.

  • [SOLVED] cool'n'quiet & modprobe newbie question

This is probably very newbie question, but I have no idea what to do.
I want to have cool'n'quiet working on my amd64. I turned it on in bios, and downloaded powernowd.
    When I type:
    > modprobe powernow-k8
    > powernowd
it works. I added powernowd to demons in my /etc/rc.conf but after restarting computer it doesn't work - I have to type both commands above again.
How to make my system not forget loaded module after restart?
Last edited by senjin (2007-08-24 19:49:31)

Use either /etc/modprobe.conf or the MODULES= array in /etc/rc.conf. I would have thought powersaved provided a config file from where you could pick a module to load though... sure there isn't one in /etc/ ?
Personally i would opt for powersaved, since i think it's more full featured (it's more a _power_ than a _cpu_ manager), but then again you may not care for anything other than controlling the cpu stepping/speed.

  • Strange Cool 'n' Quiet behaviour...

This is kinda odd. On my MSI K8N Neo Platinum, Cool 'n' Quiet works just fine when I'm running at 10x240 6:5 (FSB:RAM),. However, when I'm running at 8x300 3:2, the computer simply refuses to load Windows with CnQ enabled...it quits right before the login screen. At both settings, the CPU and RAM speeds are the same (2.4GHz and 200MHz respectively), and I've kept the timings, voltages, and HT multiplier (3x) the same in both cases.
I know it's not an issue with 300MHz FSB being too high, since with CnQ disabled I can easily boot at 315MHz and it'd be rock stable 24/7. So I'm stumped as to what could be causing the failures when CnQ is enabled with the second set of settings.
BTW, system specs are in my sig (click the link), and I'm using the official 1.3 BIOS.

    Tritium,
I was under the impression that cool and quiet and overclocking simply do not mix.
The fact that you could even get it to work at 240 is amazing to me.
At 240, what were your other boot settings (initial cpu mult and initial cpu voltage especially).
The reason why cnq and overclocking usually don't mix has to do with cpu voltage (though correct me if I'm wrong).  cnq works as follows. a tiny "cpu driver" installed in the OS communicates with the BIOS, at OS startup, to obtain a list of possible cpu states. Each cpu state is a combination of cpu voltage and a cpu multiplier.  For example, the states that I have on my non-overclocked 3200+ newcastle are something like (this is from memory so don't quote me):
    11x (2.2 ghz), 1.5V
    10x (2.0 ghz), 1.4V
    9x (1.8 ghz), 1.3v
    5x (1.0 ghz), 1.1v
Now, let's note that nowhere in the above states was there mention of HTT. Just cpu multipliers. It seems that cnq is *assuming* that HTT is kept at 200. But what happens when (for example) you bump HTT to 240?  Let's redo the above numbers. The key is that ghz changes, but cpu voltage remains the same. THAT IS THE KILLER.
    11 x 240 (2.64 ghz), 1.5V
    10 x 240 (2.4 ghz), 1.4V
    9 x 240 (2.16 ghz), 1.3v
    5 x 240 (1.2 ghz), 1.1v
Note that with HTT overclocked to 240, which cnq is ignorant of, it's trying to run at higher and higher ghz values, without being given correspondingly higher cpu voltages. For example: at stock, no overclocking, we have 2.2 ghz at 1.5V.
But with 240 HTT, we have one of the states being almost as high a ghz value (9x240=2.16ghz) yet only being fed 1.3v of juice. 1.3v is very likely not enough to safely run 2.16 ghz (to give just an example).
And all that gets magnified with HTT greater than 240.
That's my theory on why cnq and overclocking don't mix.
I very much hope I'm wrong, by the way.
What would help is if you could run cpu-z on your stable 240HTT system, and report the above values (cpu mult, htt, cpu voltage) for each state that cnq shifts between. (run a light, moderate, medium, and heavy cpu workload to get it to switch between states...but you probably already know that).
What values do you see? Let us know...I'm very interested to see what your cnq states are at 240HTT...thanks!

  • Cool 'n Quiet and Gaming?

I installed the required AMD Processor driver and set the XP power setting to minimal power usage and Cool 'n Quiet immediately kicked in after a reboot.  My CPU now runs at a steady 1000MHz and about 5-7C cooler
Is there any way to configure this such that it doesn't kick in until after a certain period of low CPU activity?  While playing FarCry I noticed quite a bit of sluggishness and lag with this enabled.  It seems that Cool 'n Quiet works TOO well because the CPU actually bogs down while it should be mostly pinned at 2GHz
It's easy to fix by putting the power setting back to Desktop where the CPU always runs at 2GHz but I like the idea of giving the CPU a breather and cool-down when I walk away from the machine and am only doing P2P sharing or whatever.
    Thanks!
    John

I play battlefield vietnam.  After I installed the driver and started using cool and quiet I noticed a big drop in temps.  MHZ drop to 800 at idle. Really quite cool like 38`.  Very impressive.
I havn't noticed any degradation in my game play.  One thing I have done....just to "check" to see what my cpu was doing while running my game:
During gameplay I can hit ALT-TAB.  Then I goto start, control panel, system and see how many mhz my system is cranking.  It always shows 2000 for me, as it should while running and intense game.  Then i can just click on the bfvietnam bar on the taskbar to jump back into my game where I left off.

  • 785GTM-E45 - Cannot Get Cool N Quiet to work

So ive been in and out of the Overclock (the switches on the motherboard its self) and Cool N Quiet doesnt seem to be throttling the CPU and voltage at all when the computer is idling. Overclocked or stock clocks, it doesnt adjust anything.  Im using CPUID to watch the speed and voltages.
Im using Windows XP 64bit with a Athlon II x 4 630. The power options set to "Minimal Power Management"
I also have double checked the bios to make sure it isnt Auto, but instead "enabled"
I tried updating the cool n quiet utility but it says im already up to date. I have already updated the bios as well.
Any suggestions to get this work properly?

All that tree hugging hippy green-earth power saving junk just adds variables to an already complicated and delicate situation in a well OC'd machine.  C&Q and related 'wares have never added anything to stability and have often been known to detract from it.  Serious overclocking is virtually the opposite of saving power.  Why risk stability (or run at lower speeds) to satisfy your need to be green?  Just turn the machine off when you aren't using it.
You guys...  I really dont care about thread battles.  Although I do agree, some people could just simply turn off the rig sometimes but I have an issue thats probably easy to fix.   I've had an overclocked E5200 to 3.5ghz before and what ever the heck Intel calls their version of Cool N Quiet; it was working perfectly fine.  I also had an 3800x2 that was able to throttle down on a Via chipset motherboard!
So, im just tryin to satisfy my self with overclocking and have Cool N Quiet at the same time. If Asus and Via can do it, I need to figure out why this 785gt isnt doing it properly.      :D

  • Cool and Quiet problem on K8N Neo2 Platinum v1.3 bios

    Hello
I have a problem with the Cool and Quiet feature on the K8N Neo2 Platinum (v1.3 bios).
As soon and I boot the Core Center v1.7.0.0 will instantly overclock my A64 3500+ CPU to 3000+ Mhz.  Of course this reboots my PC.
I have Cool and Quiet enabled in the bios, Automatic overclocking disabled in the bios and the Core Center softwares overclocking is (well it was) disabled?  How can I install it or get it to stop overclocking the system.
I want to run the Core Center to enable the Cool and Quiet fan controlling stuff.
    Thanks

Strange that Corecenter would overclock your cpu to 3ghz. It's known to be unreliable software, but not that unreliable.
Are you running a stock 3500+, or are you overclocking the HTT/FSB beyond 200?
Previous posted was right about cool and quiet software. You don't need corecenter to run it. Just stay away from corecenter and even uninstall it
Cool and quiet software (a device driver that you download from AMD, or that comes pre-installed with XP SP2) simply works as follows. It introduces the notion of several p-states (processor states) that it switches between based on its reading of cpu load. A p-state is a pairing of cpu voltage and cpu multiplier.  On my 3200+ newcastle, the p-states are:
    1.5V, 11x
    1.4V, 10x
    1.3V, 9x
    1.1V, 5x
Your 3500+ might be similar. Anyway, just run cpu-z instead of corecenter to watch your cpu speed changing on the fly.
As far as fan speeds go: the cool and quiet driver doesn't affect fan speeds.  That means to get the "quiet" part of "cool and quiet" you need either
    (a) a fan that has a temperature sensor and which automatically changes its speed based on that, or
    (b) just use the motherboard BIOS setting to do the same via bios software.
    (c) use speedfan to do the same via windows software.
I myself prefer (b) but it depends on the bios accurately reporting temperature, which can vary wildly between bios releases (e.g. newcastles didn't start getting accurate temp reports until bios 1.4).
