Basic Tagging Question, Single Album, Multiple CDs

Sorry for what perhaps is a really basic question, but only realy thought about it after upgrading to iTune7!
I have albums, Elton John for example, which is a Greatest Hits album, and there are 3 CD's
I origionally had each Cd called 'Greatest Hits - CD1; Greatest Hits CD2' etc.
With the cover flow thing this is giving me 3 covers for he same album (not ideal!)
I have just started to look through, and i have changed each CD's info (in the tags) to use the 'Disk 1 of 3' for CD1, and 'Disk 2 of 3' for CD2 etc. Then i change the actual album name for all the disks to read Greatest Hits
This works, so now using coverflow, i can see the album with a single cover, but how do i go directly to the 2nd or 3rd disk? Have i got to peak in the actual track listing to pick up disk 2
Also, when everything is synced onto my iPod (havent got it with me at present) how will i easily access the 2nd or 3rd disk from the album?
Again, sorry if this is trivial, but i would love to hear about how other people organise their library, and navigate, having multiple CD albums
Also, is there a quide on setting up the tagging info which may be of some help to me?
Thanks

  • Unix layout question  single vs. multiple logical volumes

    Hello friends,
    I have a question which I have seen various points of view. I'm hoping you might be able to give me a better insight so I can either confirm my own sanity, or accept a new paradigm shift in laying out the file system for best performance.
    Here are the givens:
    Unix systems (AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, and/or Linux).
    Hardware RAID system on large SAN (in this case, RAID-05 striped over more than 100 physical disks).
    (We are using AIX 6.1 with CIO turned on for the database files).
    Each Physical Volume is literally striped over at least physical 100 disks (spindles).
    Each Logical Volume is also striped over at least 100 spindles (all the same spindles for each lvol).
    Oracle software binaries are on their own separate physical volume.
    Oracle backups, exports, flash-back-query, etc., are on their own separate physical volume.
    Oracle database files, including all tablespaces, redo logs, undo ts, temp ts, and control files are in their own separate physical volume (that is made up of logical volumes that are each striped over at least 100 physical disks (spindles).
    The question is if it makes any sense (and WHY) to break up the physical volume that is used for the Oracle database files themselves, into multiple logical volumes? At what point does it make sense to create individual logical volumes for each datafile, or type, or put them all in a single logical volume?
    Does this do anything at all for performance? If the volumes are logical, then what difference would it to put them into individual logical volumes that are striped across the same one-hundred (+) disks?
    Basically ALL database files are in a single physical volume (LUN), but does it help (and WHY) to break up the physical volume into several logical volumes for placing each of the individual data files (e.g., separating system ts, from sysaux, from temp, from undo, from data, from indexes, etc.) if the physical volume is created on a RAID-5 (or RAID-10) disk array on a SAN that literally spans across hundreds of high-speed disks?
    If this does makes sense, why?
    From a physical standpoint, there are only 4 hardware paths for each LUN, so what difference does it make to create multiple 'logical' volumes for each datafile, or for separating types of data files?
    From an I/O standpoint, the multi-threading of the operating system should only be able to use the number of pathways that are capable based on the various operating system options (e.g., multicore CPUs using SMT (simultaneous multipath threading). But I believe they are still based on physical paths, not based on logical volumes.
    I look forward to hearing back from you.
    Thanks.

    Thanks for your reply damorgan.
    We have dual HBAs in our servers as standard equipment, along with dual controllers.
    I totally agree with the idea of getting rid of RAID-5, but that is not my choice.
    We have a very large (massive) data center and the decision to use RAID-5 was at the discretion of our unix team some time ago. Their idea is one-size-fits-all. When I questioned it, I was balked at. After all, what do I know? I've only been a sys admin for 10 years (but on HP-UX and Solaris, not on AIX), and I've only been an Oracle DBA for nearly 20 years.
    For whatever it is worth, they also mirror their RAID-5, so in essence, it is a RAID 5-1-0 (RAID-50).
    Anyway, as for the hardware paths, from my understanding, there are only 4 physical hardware paths going from the servers to the switches, to the SAN and back. Their claim (the unix team's) is that by using multiple logical volumes within a single physical volume, that it increases the number of 'threads' to pull data from the stripe. This is the part I don't understand and may be specific to AIX.
    So if each logical volume is a stripe within a physical volume, and each physical volume is striped across more than one hundred disks, I still don't understand how multiple logical volumes can increase I/O through-put. From my understanding, if we only have four paths, and there are 100+ spindles, even if it did increase I/O somehow by the way AIX uses multipathing (SMT) with its CPUs, how can it have any affect on the I/O. And if it did, it would still have to be negligible.
    Two years ago, I've personally set up three LUNs on a pair of Sun V480s (RAC'd) connected to a Sun Storage 3510 SAN. One LUN for Oracle binaries, one for database datafiles, and one for backups and archivelogs), and then put all my datafiles in a single logical volume on one LUN, and had fantastic performance for a very intense database that literally had 12,000 to 16,000 simultaneous active* connections using Webshere connection pools. While that was a Sun system, and now I'm dealing with an AIX P6 570 system, I can't imagine the concepts being that much different, especially when the servers are basically comparable.
    Any comments or feedback appreciated.

  • How can I get a Album with multiple artists to appear as a single album with all of the tracks?

    How can I get a Album that contains multiple artists to appear as a single album with multiple tracks?  Also when I sync iTunes with my iPhone or iPad the Album appears as multiple albums with each artist.  The Album title is the same on each of the affected tracks.

    Quick answer:  Select all the tracks on the album, File > get info, and either give them all a single "album artist" or check the "compilation" flag.
    If these are from multiple-CD sets you may also need to enter the appropriate information in the disc number fields.

  • Listing tracks from an album with multiple artists as part of one single album

    When listing my music by album on my iphone 4, tracks from the same album with multiple artists appear as separate albums. How can I get the iphone to list these as part of one single album? For example, "Rock of Oldies" is a compilation with 50's music, but on my iphone it appears as a long list of distinct albums: Rock of Olides - Elvis Presley, Rock of Oldies - Beach Boys, and so on. I tried bulk-selecting these and flagging them as "part of a compilation" on itunes, but it doesn't seem to help on my iphone...

    I just tried, but they still remain listed as separate albums on my iphone when i view by album...

  • ITunes  is creating multiple files/albums from a single album

    Hi,
    I hope I can explain this clearly. For some unknown reason on SOME CD's I put in and on SOME music I've added to my library (from my HD) I've gotten multiple album covers for one album. Let me try that a different way, each song on a CD will be displayed in cover flow as it's own separate CD's so that if there are 10 songs on Bjork's album, I'll have 10 different albums coming up in cover flow for Bjork. It's frustrating when I'm trying to scroll and more so on my iPod.
    Any suggestions? Can I fix it?
    Thanks.

    *HowTo: Grouping Tracks Into Albums*
    Excuse the long post, but hopefully covering all the bases (that I can think of) will help you fix the other issues you are likely to run into as you try to organise your iTunes library.
    *Use an album friendly view*
    iTunes will let you sort music on many columns, some of which are unlikely to group albums together. The most useful order for editing the library is probably *Album by Artist*. If you're not already there, select the list view and click on the column heading for Artist until it reads Album by Artist.
    *One cover, too many tracks*
    The iPod (and iTunes to a lesser extent) conflates two or more albums with the same title, most obviously with *Greatest Hits*. On the iPod this can result in one album acting as a combination of two or more. Selecting any cover gives all the tracks of all albums with the same title. The workaround for this "Greatest Hits" bug is to give each album a unique title - I tend to go for *Album - Album Artist* as this reads clearly in the iTunes browser. Alternatively you could use the wording as it appears on the cover or append different numbers of spaces for each different album. Somewhat oddly, setting different values for Sort Album doesn't work.
    *Album not with others by same artist*
    iTunes relies on the Gracenote CDDB database when identifying CD's. This often marks collections or anthologies of an artist's work as a compilation. In iTunes, however, the compilation flag has the logical function of grouping together tracks with the same album name, but different artists on each track, e.g. "Now That's What I Call Metal 666!". These compilations are then all grouped together at the end of cover flow. Most of us however, would expect "Greatest Hits" albums to be listed with the other albums by the same album artist. For albums which are essentially by a single album artist or group it is best to set the appropriate value for the album artist and clear the compilation flag.
    *One album, too many covers*
    Sadly the iPod ignores the Album Artist field when grouping albums which causes problems when some tracks list guest artists. You can simply mark the entire album as a compilation which seems to be the way iTMS handles it, however that's not an ideal fix. Short of waiting for Apple to address this issue (and as far as I can tell it goes back to the 1st gen. of iPods) we need a workaround. What I do is to put any additional artist info. in square brackets after the song name. E.g. *Track \[Feat. Guest\]* and then set *Artist=Album Artist* for each track. For anthologies where the Album Artist is credited as part of another group, e.g. for Cream tracks on an Eric Clapton anthology, I use *Track \[As Group\]*. For a track where the main Album Artist doesn't receive a credit, e.g. the first track of the Slim Shady LP credited to Jeff Bass, I just set the track name to *Track \[Guest\]* while still setting the artist to the album artist. N.b. I use square brackets to indicate this is not part of the actual song title and also use this style for Mix/Live/Bonus info.
    *One album, still too many covers*
    iTunes may split albums into two or more sections if some tracks from the album have different values for Artist, Album Artist, Album, No. of Discs or Part of a Compilation. Tiny differences such as trailing spaces, accented characters or variants of symbols can sometimes be quite hard to spot. The iPod is also more sensitive to case variations and may split or reorder an album that looks okay in iTunes. Normally overtyping the desired value for each shared field will complete the grouping of the album into one entity. Occasionally, however, this method seems to fail. When this happens I've found that you can force every field to update properly by adding some extra text - e.g. a trailing X, which once applied seems to complete the joining of the tracks into one album. Once this has happened the extra data can be removed and the album should remain properly grouped.
    *Tried that, there are STILL too many covers!*
    The Sort Artist, Sort Album & Sort Album Artist fields can be used to override the normal sort order. For example iTunes automatically drops leading prepositions (a/an/the) so "The Beatles" are arranged under "B" instead of "T". Occasionally different tracks from the same album can have different values in these sort fields which can also break up the grouping. Making the sort columns visible in iTunes can help with spotting & correcting such problems.
    *One cover for multi-disc album*
    Multi-disc albums are often listed as *Album (CD1)* for CD 1, *Album (CD2)* for CD 2 etc. To display these properly using just one cover, each disc should have the correct *Disc X of Y* values set, and then the entire album should be given the single title Album. Being somewhat obsessive I also renumber the tracks sequentially, working backwards from the last track (so that no two tracks ever have the same number) until I reach disc 1. BTW You can still give the individual discs different artwork should it be relevant so that the correct artwork will be displayed as the album progresses.
    *One artist, many names*
    With some artists, particularly classical composers, you should be aware of alternative representations of their names. E.g. 2Pac vs. Tupac. The menus will work best if for each artist you standardise on just one form of their name. E.g. make a choice between Mozart, W.A. Mozart or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and then apply it consistently. For classical music I tend also to use the Composer as the Artist & Album Artist and either discard the performer details or place these into the Comments field.

  • Group Multiple CDs of album together in 11.0.3

    Does anyone know what the new iTunes feature of grouping multiple CDs of the same album together means? Is it fixing the problem where sometimes they don't? Does it allow CDs with the names [disc 1] and [disc 2] after them to be grouped together? I have been taking Albums of mutiple CDs and using the "disc" fields and that seems to work.
    I really dislike Apple's SCANT help on new features. I had to go dig through the (VASTLY) revamped view options to figure out where the ability to show album art in list view was hidden, and the help files have not been updated with the new mini view. A little more help would be nice Apple...

    Thank you for the picture Michael! I now know what is going on....
    NOTHING changed in terms of what it takes to group them together, as in, you still need them to be the same album titile, and you need to use the disc # and total disc count fields — the change is that now, instead of showing tracks 1-10 and then starting over with tracks 1-12 (for example) for disk 2, and having them all be one after another, it breaks it into each disc with a disc # and does it horizontally rather than vertically. What I mean by that is the following:
    Before, if you had 3 discs, that totaled 32 tracks. Disc one with 9, disc two with 11, and disc 3 with 12. What you'd have is two columns of 16 songs each, 1st column starting with 1-9, then 1-7. The right column would start with 8, go through 11, and then go 1-12. NOW what you get is 3 groupings, titled disc 1, 2 and 3, 1st one going 1-5 in column 1 and 6-9 in column 2. Second disc going 1-6 in column 1 and 7-11 in column 2, and the last one having two equal sized columns of 1-6 and 7-12.
    Also, Not sure I agree on defaulting to on, but unlike all the other checboxe in view options, this one is not also available by right clicking the column headers.
    Thanks for the help guys!

  • Creating a single album from multiple tracks

    When I import a boxed set (say Billy Joel's "Nine Lives"), iTunes splits the tracks according to the artist listed on each one.  Thus, Billy's early band gets its own album listing; tracks attributed to Billy get a different album, and so forth.
    But I want all of the tracks to be listed under a single album (or, in this case, 4 discs).
    How do I do this?  Add "Billy Joel" to the artist category for each track?
    Thanks in advance for your help!

    I recommend this process:
    Repeat this for each track --
    Control - click on a track, then choose "Get Info".  Go to the "Info" tab on top, and check the "Part of a compilation" box in the lower right.

  • Combining songs from multiple cds

    I was trying to make a "best of" selection of songs from a single artist but from multiple cds. After importing songs from each cd, how do I combine them into one. Also, after importing, is it possible to rearrange the song order? I can't seem to be able to. Please help.

    iTunes sees an album as any group of tracks with a distinct Album title and the same value for *Album Artist*. You can control track order using *Track Number* and *Disc Number*.

  • Why Does iTunes Make Combining Songs Into a Single Album So Difficult?

    Can anyone explain, or refer me to a website, that explains and lists in a "1,2,3" manner the illogic of the iTunes "get info" panes and why iTunes splits, combines and erases data depending upon what you put in the "get info" area. I have looked at many websites with suggestions and some work and some don't. The frustration I have is that I cannot decipher the logic of what iTunes is doing. Some comments and examples:
    1. I thought it was convention when you highlight multiple anythings, and specify a change, this change is done on all highlighted things. For example, when I want to combine several songs into a single album, highlight them all and fill in information in the "get info area", sometimes it combines, sometimes it splits the songs, sometimes it erases the artwork. Even when I specify "part of a compilation".
    2. Sometimes when I add "various artists", it combines the various highlighted songs but then erases the artwork.
    3. One would think that when you specify any songs as "part of a compilation" that would automatically force these songs into a single album. Sometimes iTunes does, and sometime it does not.
    4. Even when I think I have entered exactly the same information there apparently is something different. It has taken me up to 15 minutes first of very careful checking of spelling, spacing, etc. then just totally randomly changing something before I can get songs together.
    5. Why isn't there just a very simple button that says something like: "no matter what, force the highlighted songs into a single album? Is there any way to simply and easily force songs together into a single album no matter what is in the individual "get info" areas?
    Anyway, you get the idea. Surely there is some set of rules or logic that I am totally missing. Thanks.

    Thanks, that was extremely helpful but unfortunately this very well laid out website confirms the fact that this is a very un-Apple-like interface that is confusing, contradictory and extremely difficult to use. Not sure if anyone from Apple reads these threads, but in the next version they need to do an extremely serious remake. I think this part of the interface must have been designed by refugees from the PC camp who somehow got hired by Apple!
    Thanks again.

  • Insert pages from a single document multiple times

    I'm trying to create a simple program that I can use to display PDF files that I can use to play at the piano. I perform often, and need to create "play lists" from which I can pull all, or part of, a PDF file containing music and display it.
    I have it all working, except for one problem. I may need to "repeat" a section of a piece. I'm building up the play list by calling AcroPDDoc.InsertPages for each item in the play list. If a PDF file appears multiple times in the play list, when I call InsertPages, the call fails.
    In this code snippet, pdDoc is the main doc to which I'm adding pages. playList is a generic List of my own PlayList objects, and I need to iterate through all the items in the playList except the first one, which is already loaded.
    This code works great unless the fileName I specify has already been opened. The call to AcroPDDoc.Open succeeds just fine, but the call to pdDoc.InsertPages fails if the file has already had pages from it inserted. All other documents work fine. The documentation, of course, doesn't mention this.
            int insertPage = pdDoc.GetNumPages() - 1;
            for (int i = 1; i < playList.Count; i++)
              var newDoc = new AcroPDDoc();
              var item = playList(i);
              int startPage = 0;
              int endPage = 0;
              if (newDoc.Open(item.fileName))
                startPage = Math.Max(0, item.startPage);
                endPage = Math.Max(0, item.endPage);
                var totalPages = newDoc.GetNumPages;
                if (item.endPage < 0 || item.endPage > totalPages)
                  endPage = totalPages - 1;
                int numPages = (endPage - startPage) + 1;
                if (pdDoc.InsertPages(insertPage, newDoc, startPage, numPages, 0))
                  insertPage += numPages;
    So, the questions:
    1.) Is it possible to load pages from a single document multiple times?
    2.) Is there a better way to do this? (That is, loop through a list of file names, starting and ending page numbers, and add the documents to an existing document.)
    Any help appreciated! Thanks -- Ken

    Hi Ken,
    >The documentation, of course, doesn't mention this.
    The documentation does not state explicitly that you can't insert pages again from a PDDoc you open again and never close.
    But it mentions that you get references only from an already opened PDDoc.
    "...Opens the specified document. If the document is already open, it returns a reference to the already opened PDDoc. You must call PDDocClose() once for every successful open..."
    It doesn't state that you can't insert pages from a referenced PDDoc but it seems so.
    I would close the PDDoc within your for-loop after inserting pages and release newDoc.
    Regards
    Norbert

    When I download one particular  CD to I Tunes on my Mac Book Pro it loads as separate songs and not a single a single album.

    You may need to add the artwork manually. Google can help you find good quality album covers.
    Are these compilation albums with multiple artists? If so and you have entered individual artists in the Artist field the albums will show up in the iTunes Browser as you describe. To fix it set the Album Artist to "Various Artists" (without the quotes) and this album should display properly; or, highlight the full album, do a Get Info and click the Options tab and make "part of a compilation" YES.

  • Playing a single album in iTunes

    Is there a way to have iTunes stop playing after an album playlist (.m3u file) is done?
    Right now when I click on an .m3u the album starts playing in the iTunes library, and when the album ends iTunes continues on to the next song in the Library. I can understand that when you drag-and-drop an album's files in the Library there is no differentiation between those and the rest of Library's files. But I would think that specifying a single album with the .m3u would let iTunes know that it should play only those files. Sometimes I just want to load an album, listen to it and be on my merry way.
    I realize that I could simply put the album in its own iTunes playlist or hit the stop button, but I'm just curious whether this is possible in iTunes. I'm also very lazy.

    and I wanted to buy the whole album of MUSE (The 2nd Law)
    then I realized that I could buy other songs except for 'Survival' for $10.7 using 'Complete My Album' (Original price is $11.9)
    so I bought 'The 2nd Law' album for $10.7. but there isn't 'Survival' on the 'The 2nd Law' album playlist.
    single album and whole album are seperated on the playlist. how I get the whole album playlist??
    Do I have to buy 'Survival' in the whole album's list to make perfect 'The 2nd Law' album playlist??
    plase help me.

    I have this exact same question / issue too and it is definitely something I would LOVE to see Apple fix ASAP.  It is especially important to me because so many popular artists release Singles (as Single Albums) weeks or even months in advance of their full album coming out.  When I have the choice, I ALWAYS prefer to buy a single song from the album it is on (in case I like the song a lot and want to check out more from that artist) - however, this is often not possible due to the "Single Album" phenomenon.  Sidenote: could you just freakin' get rid of Single Albums altogether (when there is an associated real album)?  They clutter up the See All Albums view horribly - at least give us a filter or something for the real-deal studio albums vs all the junk.
    While it is great that I get "credit" for my purchase from the Single Album towards the real Album (thanks for that Apple), I personally have a strong preference to then see the original single as part of the album instead of as a stand-alone.  It's just cleaner organization-wise, easier from a usability standpoint (you can actually listen to the whole album you bought using the album filter!), etc.  It would at least be nice to have the choice to "convert" the original single to the Album version, if Apple is concerned about forcing the change (I personally would be happy with a forced change, but if given a choice would always convert).
    Please fix this!!!
    My example:
    -Bought Calvin Harris, "Feel So Close (Radio Edit)" back in March '12 (I think it was released in August '11) for $1.29
    -Completed My Album by buying "18 Months" album for $8.70 recently (released Oct 30, 2012)
    -Was happy to pay $8.70 instead of $9.99 (got full credit for the $1.29 I spent on the single) - good job Apple
    -Am now frustrated that "Feel So Close (Radio Edit)" has different Album info, different Album cover art etc - BAD job Apple
    Would love to hear that this is going to be addressed soon - hopefully with a retroactive converter tool too??
    PS  I realize I could manually adjust the metadata for the track to make it match, but I HATE the idea of doing that.  Very clunky solve and I personally would be worried that I missed something or didn't "fully" change everything, the underlying file is not exactly what I would have gotten from the full album version, etc.
