Basic voice recording question

Sorry for the basic question. I'm using a Plantronics headphone and an early Powerbook G4 laptop running 10.3.9. I just want to do some voice recording on Garageband 3.
My system preference for sound is audio line-in port (I don't see a microphone jack on this G4 laptop).
My system preference for Garageband only gives me the built-in audio option for audio input.
I don't seem to be able to figure out how to record my voice. Can anybody help with the settings or procedures. Thanks much!

Hi charles,
Not familiar with that version of the iBook, but if there is a headphone jack, the line-in would be the same size plug as that (i think it wil have to arrows pointing towards a dot).
Recording voice has alot of options. If we knew what you were trying to record (singing, podcast, voice over) we could be more specific. Budget is a huge factor as well.
Just a couple of quick suggestions,
Podcasting, can't go wrong with a USB mic (Sampson and Blue both make good ones) and you don't have to buy anything else to work with them.
Vocals (singing), you should get a digital interface, a good pre amp and a good mic. In this catagory, the more money you spend (usually) the better quality you will have.
lets start here and you can get back to us....
good luck Charles and welcome to the forum!

  • Voice recorder that's OSX compat.?

I know this question has come up before, but I haven't found an answer to my question.
I use an Olympus DS-330 voice recorder and it's Mac-compatible. It's got a limit, set to high-quality, of 4 hours or so, which isn't enough. It looks as though Olympus has basically abandoned Mac. (My recorder is four years old.)
I don't own an iPod and it seems like overkill for my purposes. Anyone have any recommendations for a Mac-compatible voice recorder that will record 8 hours on high-quality settings, and that's in the $150 and under range?

I switched this from "answered" because I'd like to hear more. Anyone have experience with the new Olympus OSX-compat. recorders, or other good Mac-compatible recorders?
I'm a reporter, so I'd especially like to hear how they work in that context -- one on one interviews, small groups w/ambient noise.
The DS-2 and WS-300M seem likely choices, but is the OSX integration smooth and useful? Olympus seems to have moved from using its proprietary DSS player to Windows media. Can you slow down playback on that?
Any other recorders worth using? I want at least 8-10 on a high-quality setting.

  • Olympus Digital Voice Recorder (VN960PC)

I have an Olympus Digital Voice Recorder (VN960PC). On the Olympus site they have no Mac OSX software [though they do have it for the Dark Side] that will allow me to download the audio files onto my mac mini [PPC].
Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there any software that might enable me to do this outside of going to Boot Camp or Virtual PC?
Flat Panel iMac 20 inch 1.25 ghz, iBook 500 mhz, mac mini 1.42 ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi, bikinijack.
    1. With the particular digital voice recorder you have, I suspect you are going to be out of luck. Olympus offers DSS Player for Mac OS X for their higher-end units, i.e. their DS-series digital voice recorders.
    2. I presume you've tried connecting the VN-960PC to your Mac via USB cable and found that its built-in storage does not mount on the desktop. True?
    3. I suspect DSS Player is not going to work with your VN-960PC, but if you hada DS-series recorder, here's how I'd advise you, based on having previously researched this question for a person with a DS-series player:The short answer is that if you install the DSS Player application that comes with their digital voice recorders, and then install the "DSS Player for Mac (OS X) V6 Update to V6.0.4" — which can be found using their Support - Downloads Web page — then the DSS Player software will work with Tiger.
They are planning to update their Web site to reflect this as well as provide a FAQ. The basic instructions are the following:
    • If your Olympus digital voice recorder comes with DSS Player V6, you simply install "DSS Player for Mac (OS X) V6 Update to V6.0.4" using the instructions in the Read Me file.
    • If your Olympus digital voice recored comes with DSS Player versiion 1.xx, you first install the "DSS Player for Mac (OS X) Upgrade from version 1.xx to V6" using the instructions in the Read Me file, then install "DSS Player for Mac (OS X) V6 Update to V6.0.4," again following the instructions in its Read Me file.
StuffIt Expander is required to unpack these downloads. Tiger, unlike prior versions of Mac OS X, does not include Stuffit Expander: see "Mac OS X 10.4: Where is StuffIt Expander?" If you don't have StuffIt Expander, a free download of such for Mac OS X 10.4 can be found here.4. Since your Mac Mini is PPC, your only real option for running Windows is Virtual PC. There are some other, open-source projects for getting Windows to run under Mac OS X, but Virtual PC is probably the "gold standard" in that arena.
If your 20-inch iMac is Intel-based, in lieu of Boot Camp you could also try Parallels Desktop for Mac. This leverages the virtualization technology of the Intel chips, permitting you to run Mac OS X and Windows simultaneously.
    Good luck!

  • How to add a voice recorder widget/interaction?

Well, that's my question. It's because I'm working now on a project that simulates the new TOEIC Speaking and Writing test, which is basically an online test, and I need to record students' answers to grade them later. BTW, I already checked this other thread Voice Recording and Playback widget which is pretty much what I'm looking for. I just opened this new discussion because it seems that's an old topic, and chances are that there might be a widget with this functionality by now. Thanks!

    Oh, what a pity!
Well, in any case, I've found this website Vocaroo | Online voice recorder which has turned out to be pretty handy, so I've used the website widget on every slide students are to record their voices. Hope someone in the future creates a widget for this, though.

  • Adobe Flash Player and Voice Recorder

    Hi,
I'm a new blackberry user and have a few questions...
I tried downloading the adobe flash player so I can play some videos online... but no luck... is this not possible? i downloaded the adobe player for mobile PC with no luck...
Another question is ... When recording on the voice recorder... it doesn't record anything... it saves and records... but when I play it... there's a sound of me pressing the "record" button and then nothing... am I doing something wrong?
    Thank you!

Flash player is not available for Blackberry devices. This means you won't be able to download any player from Adobe site.
Try having a soft reset (pulling battery out for 30 sec.) to your  device and then try voice recording.

  • Enough already with Voice Recorder's 1h limit, PLE...

I'm hoping this post will also be read by someone who works on the applications that are built-into Nokia phones.
I have recently made extensive use of the voice recorder feature of my Nokia N85, and I was reminded how extremely inconvenient the arbitrary one hour limit to the recording is.Thanks to it, one has to always check whether the hour has finished, and if it has, manually start another recording. If it hasn't, just check back...
I had to spend a good amount of time searching for third-party voice recorders, none of which I found satisfying, either because of their price or because of the fact that, for some reason, the recording quality never comes close to that of the in-built voice recorder. I therefore have to continue to go with it, although I really wish Nokia realised that it is ridiculous to cripple the functionality of an essential application, especially in more recent phone models.
I have 8GB on my memory card and want this to be the only limitation my voice recordings. The one hour limit may have made sense 10 years ago, but not any more, and I doubt any one appreciates a "legacy feature" like that. Please show a bit of flexibility, Nokia, and address this issue in your future firmware versions. Thank you.

I have to agree, this is annoying. So many choices made in included software seem to be placeholders for third-party or nokia-developed premium apps. Nokia provides quite a bit free of charge, and is good in so many ways, that I hope they'll reconsider the iPhonification of their lines and provide solid value with included apps, instead of charging for basic functionality.
hadimassa, no personal offense meant to you, but i have to respectfully disagree, this is exactly where grievances should be aired, and what we can do about it is discuss it.

  • PC voice recorder recording into Mac iTunes

I have an Olympus voice recorder that said it would work on my Mac but it doesn't.  So I use it on a pc.  But my iTunes is on my Mac and I'd really like to get a recording off of the recorder and into iTunes.  I tried mailing the recording from a pc, opening and downloading it on my Mac but it comes up as garbled text.

Save the WMA files onto the Mac.  Play them with VLC or install Flip4Mac on your computer to play them with Quicktime player.
VLC media player - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ - general media player that plays just about anything.
Perian codecs for Quicktime - http://www.perian.org - plugins to add functionality to Quicktime for playing additional audio and video formats
Quicktime audio problems, Perian, VLC - http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9013669 - read note about uninstalling prior DIVX support before installing Perian.
    Free Flip4mac QuickTime player components - http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx
    Flip4Mac - http://www.telestream.net/
After installation a new Flip4Mac pane will appear in System Preferences.  Make sure you set the boxes to ensure that it will play WMV files in Quicktime.  There is a free version but they don't make that very clear (I wonder why?).  To do conversion vs. just playback you have to use the paid version.
Alternatively, try converting them (there will be quality loss):

  • Uploading from olympus digital voice recorder vn-240pc to mac

This question was asked a few years ago and archived without a solution.  Is there any new trick such that I can upload voice recordings from this device (olympus digital voice recorder vn-240pc) to my macbook pro/ snow leopard?
I realize the device itself is in fact only compatible with PC.  I am wondering if there is a fix, not a standard software download from olympus.

Any Mac that can run 10.6 can also natively run Windows:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2741
Although they do have a download here:
    http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_support_downloads.asp?id=1079&os=m
but don't say what Mac operating system is required.  It is possible though it may only work under older Mac OS X versions, as the icon they use for the Mac operating systems is old.  Anything that requires a PowerPC Mac needs to be updated if it requires access to certain drivers.  Though since you have 10.6 at least you can run applications that don't require PowerPC specific drivers that were written for Mac OS X.

  • Olympus VN 2100 digital voice recorder and mac

Is there any way to get the voice recordings I have on my Olympus (VN 2100pc) digital voice recorder into my mac? I understand this recorder is not mac compatible but I have so many recordings that are important on this recorder before I realized it wasn't mac compatible. Any program that will allow me to convert files into mac, on my iBook?
    Thank you.
    Jeff

It is my understanding that the VN 2100PC has a USB port & cable. The VN 2100 does not; Olympus uses 'pc' to distinguish the two.
    VN 2100pc: http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpgsection/cpg_supportfaqs.asp?id=1270
    VN 2100: http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpgsection/cpg_supportfaqs.asp?id=1269
Is your question how to convert the files from CELP, ADPCM (WAVE) to a quicktime format after you plug the recorder into your computer and copy the files?
Or are you having trouble connecting your recorder to your computer?
It has been my experience that, once connected, a USB profile should show up in Finder and, after a bit of digging, you should be able to find your recordings and copy them.
Please let me know the status; if Olympus 'PC' recorders are not compatible with OS X, it would be good to know (I'm looking at digital recorder presently).

  • IPod Touch for Voice Recording. Any Thoughts?

I have an iPod Touch and I love it. I am wondering if anyone has experience with using it as a voice recorder. I understand that I would have to buy a microphone adaptor, so I'd like to hear recommendations on which to buy. I will be using it to record lectures at college in relatively small rooms. I had used an Olympus digital voice recorder every semester until now. However I've lost it and before I buy a new one, I wanted to see if maybe I could add another use to my iPod Touch. The most important thing is that I can transfer the recordings to my computer as I like archive all lectures and labs.
    To summarize my questions:
    1. Is this even a good idea? Does anyone have experience doing this or something similar?
    2. What microphone adaptor would you recommend?
    3. What program(s) will be needed?
    4. Any other input is more than welcome.
    Thank you kindly, Apple site.
    -Vincent.

Heck yeah! I use mine all the time for recording voice memos! The built in app works perfectly fine for me although there are most likely tons on the app store. In terms of what mic to get, It doesn't matter as long as it is the 'passthrough' kind. Not that it has to have a headphone jack on it, but it has to have the 4 connectors on the male end that plugs into your iDevice. You can buy little tiny 'stub' microphones all over on ebay that will fit perfectly with little footprint, DOWNSIDE to those is that you can't plug in a pair of headphones at the same time (unless you're using the iPhone earbuds that have a built in mic, that kinda thing) Hope this helped! have fun!

  • Advice on voice recorder attachments?

We have to replace an Olympus digital Voice Recorder that was lost.
Our primary goal is record lectures, classes, etc.
We have an iPod with color display (photos, no video) that was purchased late in 2005.
Are there any of these products that will work well for this purpose? I see iTalk (which seems to have vanished from the Belkin web site?!) iMic, iTalk, iPod Microphone Adapter, iPod Voice Recorder, TuneTalk... And that's just Belkin products...
Any recommendations for these products for recording lectures?
    Thanks!
    Mark

There's no bass settings adjustments on the ICD-AX412 Digital Voice Recorder. It is recommended to attach a tripod (not supplied) or opening the stand on the rear and placing the IC recorder at a more upright angle on a table when recording a music performance (e.g., concerts) so you can adjust the angle of the IC recorder and the built-in microphones more precisely.
Also, you cannot modify the Scene Select settings (page 34 of the manual). If you want to change the setting items, such as REC Mode (page 74), Mic Sensitivity (page 75), etc., for recording situations, use the menu to change each item of recording settings.

Yes, you can put the recordings onto your computer in WMA format. The sound quality is great for what I use it for.
