Basix Unix Knowledge Required?

I'm beginning to understand how to identify which directories contain files which would need to be modified in order to customize specific pages such as the login pages & users desktops.
Is there any way to access these files other than thru a command line and or can I modify and import them back in some other way?.. ie .. is there any third party software I can use to make this process simpler? As in a non unix interface?
I'm an unix novice and a non-programmer. What recommendations would you make in terms of what I need to learn (unix?) in order to better qualify myself to administer portal server 3.0?

Yes. u have to have a basic knowledge in Unix especially Solaris
to become a Poral Server administrator.
Reasons why ?
Since portal server involves too many integrations with the external
software and networking / security for single sign on u might want
to get some knowledge on how LDAP works etc., since it uses LDAP
for storing users profile information . Also when it comes to performance
tuning of Portal Server u have to have knowledge on tuning Solaris
as well. This requires setting up TCP / IP tuning etc.,
So basic UNIX programming would be a must skill to become a Portal
Administrator.

It all depends on the kind of role you aim at or how you want to sell yourself.
I dont think programming knowledge is required for core SAP MDM related work but it all depends on the role in hand,project requirement,landscape,customization etc.
I will like to add that SAP NetWeaver Master Data Management (SAP NetWeaver MDM) can provide a single version of master data for supplier, product, customer, or user-defined data objects in heterogeneous environments.
It is not only a tool but a part of strategy.It has to interact various SAP as well as legacy systems for data related operations.
SAP provides its users with set of APIs which one can use to achieve customization as per their requirement.
There are ABAP,JAVA and .NET APIs provided by SAP for this purpose.
In all,having a coding experience in any of the above languages would certainly be a plus.

Importing .eex using Java Command Line on Unix (Licence required?)

Hiall,
We're looking into scripting our deploy process to reduce the amount of manual intervention required. We'll be importing the eex from a Unix box and was wondering what the licencing restrictions are on using the Java Command Line tools.
Do we need a licence for them? Which kind? Desktop or Administrator?
We already have Desktop licences but would rather not have to buy an additional one just for this process.

The Java Command Line Utility for the EUL is licensed with the Admin edition so you'll need to purchase at least one Admin license (at current prices these are $5,000 per administrator).
Personally, I've always found scripting to be as much a manual process as entering the Admin tool and using the GUI interface.

UNIX command required to elevate end user Admin privs on mac

Hi All,
I thought this would be easy but we've drawn a blank.
So much detail online and in the ARD manual seems to be about setting admin priveledges for end users of actual ARD.
What we would like to do is to make the user an administrator of their computer temporarily.
So rather than browse to their computer, take control, log them out, log in as administrator, go to accounts and then select eheir account and tick the "Allow user to admister this computer" box - I was looking for a UNIX command that coudl be sent.
Any help greatfully recieved.

I believe this will work, but test it on a testbed system first. Send the following UNIX command to the target computers:
dscl / -append /Groups/admin GroupMembership ARDusername
where "ARDusername" is the user you want to add to the admin group. To remove the user's admin rights, substitute -delete for -append.
Hope this does the job for you. If not, it should be close, so persual of the man page for dscl should help you to the correct syntax.

Using Unix to Require ARD Screen Control (but have everything else!)

The problem: how can you use the command line to remotely grant the ARD server user full rights to do everything EXCEPT for controlling the end users' screens? On our network, we want end users to have the security of being able to grant permission for screen control. This makes ARD act a bit more like Timbuktu/NetOctopus.
Here is the solution and the SPACES IN CODE ARE AS LISTED!
to turn on the require permission function for all incoming ARD users:
sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/k ickstart -configure -clientopts -setreqperm -reqperm -yes
to turn on all ARD functions EXCEPT for control screen for the ARD user named "BOB":
sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/k ickstart -configure -users BOB -privs -DeleteFiles -TextMessages -ShowObserve -OpenQuitApps -GenerateReports -RestartShutdown -SendFiles -ChangeSettings -ControlObserve -ObserveOnly

You have a good wish, But you didn't let us know what is your education back ground.
If you are a computer graduate and got good knowledge on programming languages jump in a technical consultant. You can do this by learning ABAP and Netweaver XI or Java Programming + Netweaver XI or Netweaver with Java and ABAP is good.
If you don't have computer programming knowledge and got domain knowledge about any of the modules, then learn that particular domain base SAP module.

'kmosx: I lost my admin user' Not working Unix Guru required!

Hi,
My Dual G5 decided (by itself) that I was no longer qualified to administer it and has removed the admin privileges from my account demoting me to a standard user.
I tried Michael's 'kmosx: I lost my admin user' guide but am getting a Unix error after trying the 'nicl -raw /var/db/netinfo/local.nidb -create /groups/admin gid 80' command.
The error is 'create: invalid path'
I've successfully repaired the disk using the fsck - fy command and have no errors. I've also have write privileges on the disk.
Basically if there is a Unix guru that could assist it would be most appreciated.

Ok, thanks for the support so far. I've ran the nidump -r /groups / command and it just hung there doing nothing. I had to ctrl+c to stop it. The same thing for the users.
I had a look in the local.nidb directory and I have a range of 'Store.xxxx' files with various dates. Would it be possible to revert back to a previous netinfo db? I'm assuming that these files are previous versions. The most recent is yesterdays Store.672 when I noticed the problem.
Also, in single user mode is it possible to create a new user with admin privileges? I could then use that user to change my login to admin and then remove the newly created user. Or does it have to have a record in the netinfo db?
If I remove the .AppleSetupDone file and re-run the setup program what will I lose? Will this overwrite any personal files (I have 30Gb of photos and databases that although backed up would I can still access through the standard user)?

1. In SBO, there is Posting Periods, in FA, there is Fiscal Year. Is it true that whenever you create a Posting Period in SBO, the equivalent will also be created in FA's Fiscal Year list?
2. What is the impact if our setting for FA depreciation in Administration > System Initialization > Company Details > Depreciation Calculation is by "By Monthly Basis", and the Fiscal Year is set as 1 Fiscal Year instead of monthly.
3. Can the Asset History Sheet be viewed with selection criteria from 1 Fiscal Year to another Fiscal Year? or can it be viewed only for 1 Fiscal Year at a time.

To answer my own question after a conversation with SAP Support:

>> Yes, whenever Fiscal year is created in SAP, Fiscal year in FA is also created automatically. However, take note that if you update Fiscal year in SAP, Fiscal year in FA will not be updated. And if this update happens, we will have to raise a support ticket to ask SAP to fix database.

I will give just hints rest you have to think and act not about Interview quotations but SAP MM career.
There are couple of guys and all of them has got job, first as a SAP testing, as SAP freshers in HCL/HP India etc.
Later on they have learnt all the business process in project and all the E2E cycles in MM/SD/FICO etc.
Now they are working on support projects and roll out projects.
I think there are ways and we need to understand how to explore all the job possibilities.
Please have good knowledge and definitely you will succeed. Short cuts are not always the way to success.

Where fonts are involved (as in PDF), Unix often requires the X-Windows to be running. That might not be the case for a webserver unix box.
Other than that I've got no idea.

It depends on what you need.
It's possible to use:
-winscp
But that means using a program to drag and drop files. This is most commonly used.
-setup samba on the unix system (the samba package/software needs to available for your unix)
This requires some setup on the unix system, and your windows system (connect the unix system and put a share defined on the unix system to a driveletter on your windows system), but lets you easily make a batchfile which copies data from one windows drive to another. A batchfile can be scheduled using 'at'.

How do I set up a NFS server?

Running 10.5 on macbook. Trying to create NFS server to mount ISO to proprietary UNIX client, AIX 5.2. Looked under SHARING and directory utility. Not finding any documentation which seems to indicate how this is done.
On UNIX, I would start NFS services, add directory to export list with apprpriate permissions (Which client can access it etc) and it would be good to go (assuming name resolution/routing etc). Any insight would be helpful.
