  • MacBook core duo Sept. 2006  - the audio is a mystery.  Any analogue out has bass boost with bass distortion.  With digital out, by USB or Airport Express Airtunes, the frequency response is normal.  Somewhere, Apple put in an analogue bass boost.. why?!

Since new, my Macbook core duo has sent all audio to all analogue outputs with frequency distortion.  Some physical hardware or firmware in the analogue section adds a bass boost to the frequency response of the audio....  And, this boost adds bass frequency distortion to most, if not all, of the audio analogue output.
This happens for all audio sources, players, iTunes, videos, streaming audio/video, movies...  any sound source available to the Macbook.  No-one with whom I have talked about this problem, has ever heard of it.  Not elegant ideas for reducing it are to use equalisers on players and iTunes.  iTunes even has a preprogrammed "bass reduce" on its equaliser, as if it knows already that this inherent bass boost "feature" has been built into the Macbook, and cannot be defeated by the user.
The digital audio is of sufficiently high quality to play well on a very good to excellent sound-system;  so, it's a shame someone has mucked around with the frequency response of the analogue conversion, by designing the frequency distortion right into the computer.  This motherboard, (which includes the sound-section), has been replaced, along with the speakers, and everything sounds exactly the same as it was before.
To receive a flat frequency response and no frequency distortion, I listen on one receiver using Airtunes, (it doesn't matter whether or not the analogue or digital output jack is wired analogue or connected via optical cable....  the freq. response is flat);  and I listen on a high-end stereo system using an USB output port to an A/D converter, passing the analogue result using long patch-cords connected to the "line-in" jacks of the stereo.  The bummer is that most of my audio sources are not derived from iTunes...  hence, I cannot use Airtunes with Airport express for them.  I've tried using "Airfoil" without luck.  The sound becomes distorted with sibilance and other frequency anomalies.
Question:  has anyone else discovered this sound imperfection in any Mac product?  And, does anyone know if Apple is aware of it?  Finally, has anyone found an Apple fix for the problem;  or, at least, come up with better solutions than I have?
Thanks heaps for any impute and answers you may supply!!  junadowns

This might not help you a lot, but if you want a stable system, try using packages from the repo wherever possible, look at the news before you update your system and don't mess things up (like bad configuration etc.).
When it comes to performance, you won't gain much by compiling linux by yourself! Just use the linux package from [core] or if you want a bit more performance, install the ck-kernel from
    [repo-ck]
    Server = http://repo-ck.com/$arch
(this has to go to the bottom of /etc/pacman.conf)
(use that one which is best for your cpu (in your case this might be the package linux-ck-corex).
Hmmm, Linux-ck-corex doesn't even load.. I am now trying to install the generic one. Hope it works.
Edit: I will first try linux-lqx...

  • Setting Up The Bass Booster

How do I make the bass booster the default setting for ALL of my tracks in iTunes?

Open the Library, select all the files with CTRL-A, right click on them, select "Get Info", and change the EQ to "Bass Booster" on there. It'll change the default setting for all the files.
But a better way might simply be to turn on the EQ and set it to Bass Booster. That won't change the files defaults, but it will have the same effect since the Bass Booster EQ will be used for playback.

    Hello guinness guzzler,
You can set the equalizer from the View menu, which will affect any songs played in iTunes.

  • Why is bass boost option greyed out on Audigy2

I just got this soundcard and i`d like to know why can`t i change this option...

People should learn to read the documentation before asking questions. If you go to Bass Boost and you click the "?" help sign, you see the Help Doc and you could, no SHOULD have read:
<EM>"This feature, if supported, is available only with speaker configurations without a subwoofer."</EM>
That should answer your question.Message Edited by Felix2 on 0-0-2006 :4 PM

  • Nokia 3250 Bass Boost Problems

I got myself a Nokia 3250 Xpress Music. Well the main reason i bought the phone was it being advertised as a symbian and a music phone at the same time, a combo which Nokia's competitors doesn't have.
Well after getting the phone i quickly load up the microSD with plethora of music files for my listening pleasure. At first everything was going on fine but when i turned on the option "Bass Boost" the music playback turned horrible, with sound breaking up and sounding rubbish. I just couldn't believe what was happening. The sound produced is much much worst than what im enjoying on my previous phone which is the Nokia N=Gage which came with "Extra Bass" option and sounded much better.
What i would like to know is whether my phone is default or it is a fact that the "Bass Boost" function is actually not up to the standard.
I'm using the latest firmware which is 4.14.
    Thanks for replying me.

guys, why would you have to waste your money for buying a registration for LCG Jukebox when you can get a freeware music player which is far better than the LCG Jukebox. Recommend FIVN player which enhance the bass sound of songs played on the phone with your favourite headset.
Did you see when the last post was posted-5 April, 2007. Most probably your recommended player was not released at that time.

  • Does the Palm Centro have an equalizer or bass boost?

    Hi all...
Does the Centro have any sort of equalizer or bass boost for its MP3 player?
Plus, is it possible to download an MP3 track I have in computer to the Centro for a ringtone?
    HELP!
I keep getting conflicting opinions as to downloading for ringtones. Please inform.
    I sure would appreciate it.
    Many thanx...
    Peace!<-AladdinSane-<--

Pocket-Tunes comes with the Centro, and I'm fairly certain that the version it ships with has an equalizer.
As to your second question, this thread has links to Palm support articles about using mp3 files for ringtones.  The short answer is yes, the file must be located on a Secure Digital card.  Then you use the Web browser to access the file and convert to a ringtone:

  • Asking CREATIVE, Zen V PLUS Bass boost Distortion!!

    HI,
I just bought a Zen V Plus and it has the some **bleep** problem! If you turn the Bass Boost on it MAJORLY distorts and if you combine that with a bass heavy EQ setting it's outragious!
    Thanks & Regards,
    2Creative

    Stan,
Looks like it's .wav format and FYI it's 4K bytes per second of recording. Held it up to my stereo and the sound quality is probably what you'd expect for such a mic - bit muddy but tolerable and sensiti've to exactly where you put the mic.
I'm guessing you could find a .wav to mp3 convert utility on the web but I haven't looked. Mmmm maybe I have a long time ago - search on CNET.com
    Hope this helps,
    Tivo

  • X-Fi Bass boost Windows 7

    Hi
Bass boost has zero effect for me whatsoever enabled/disabled, maxed, etc.., be it in game mode or entertainment mode. I am running Sennheiser pc 350 to the front panel of an X-Fi fatality (pci) with driver 2.8.005 (but this proble has existed for longer than the previous drivers). Windows 7 64bit.
Anyone else have this issue or know of a fix?

    Hi AaronC,
Can you please connect a pair of headphones to the sound card to see if Bass Boost is working? I don't think the Bass Boost is intended to work from the front panel.

  • Nokia BH-905i bass booster with iphone/ipad2.

How can i make it work?
pressing the multifunction button once paired, wont make it activate bass booster and stereo widening. i just hear a beeeeep once clicked, and nothing happens. pressing again will also make it beeeep instead of beep beep like its supposed to according to the manual.
I have done research and it seems the iphone 4 and ipad 2 both make use of the SBC codec...
no other problems though, quality is fine but i would really like the extra bass.

I understand.  However, the eHow article implied it affected the left-right balance and when I did it, it seemed to.  I could hardly hear my left earbud at all.  Suddenly, I could.  I can't explain it, but you might try it anyway.  As you say, even if it did work for earbud volume, it might not affect bluetooth.

  • [X-Fi Xtreme Audio PCI] Bass Boost vs Vista 64

    Hardware: X-Fi Xtreme Audio PCI
Problem: BassBoost not working after 2nd reboot.
    1) Installed drivers
    2) System rebooted
    3) BassBoost works
    4) System rebooted
    5) BassBoost NOT WORKING!
... I press "reset to defaults" -> BassBoost can work again until I reboot the system...

Thank you very much for this fix Daniel. It works great now and has removed my frustration of having to reset my settings everytime I rebooted. It might seem like a small issue to some people, but I was ready to go out and buy a new sound card because I was getting tired of having to setup my sound all the time. Thanks again,Wookie

  • No bass on Windows 7 32-bit with X-Fi Xtreme Audio

I just upgraded from the Windows 7 64-bit beta (where everything was working fine) to Windows 7 Ultimate Retail 32bit, and I am having the issue of no bass. I had this issue with the beta, but to fix it I disabled full range speakers. I tried that here, and it still isn't working. I've tried enabling bass redirection, bass boost, and I've even tried daniel_k's support pack. Still no luck.
    I hope somebody can help.

A little different story here but the same result :
    - Windows Seven Professional 64bits Edition (French)
    - X-Fi Xtreme Gamer (lastest driver 2.8.003?)
And of course one big issue : no bass/subwoofer doesn't work. Browsing on the Internet and on the Creative forums seems that this issue is common under Windows Seven.... :/
    Any help/clue/offical word ?
    Many Thanks in advance !

  • Zen Vision M:60Gb poor bass performa

I've recently purchases a Zen Vision:M 60Gb to replace an IRi'ver. I am not pleased with the bass response, and was wondering if anyone knew a way to improve it. I have tried setting the EQ and adding bass boost, which is a very mild improvement, this also has the added annoyance of clipping/distorting anything with deep bass notes (Portishead, American Beauty theme etc)I have tried with both Shure E3c, and Sennheiser HD595, and neither has the deep bass response that I am used to. Is this just a firmware issue?I currently encode using the highest setting in WMP 0, is there a better way to rip cds?If anyone could suggest a solution I would be very greatful, as it has got to the point where I am starting to think 'Ipod' and no-one deserves that!I apologise if someone has covered this in another thread, I did a search and couldn't find one, but I am new.

Thanks for the info, unfortunately 5 isn't quite loud enough for me. I wonder if there is a chance that Creative will improve the firmware to provide a better bass response, if this is possible?I have since read that European firmware can be limited, my player is at the latest available version, so I was going to try putting the American firmware on it to see if it improves the output. I have also now had a shot of a colleagues Ipod, and it is not any better, sound quality in general is in fact?worse, so thankfully I won't have to go down that route
