Bass distortion

Hey guys, I've got a little problem with the audio on a video I'm working on. In the video, I have several very low bass sounds (LFE, or low-frequency effect). Kind of like those sounds you hear in dramatic movie trailers. Because the volume of the LFEs was too low, I boosted it and it sounded fine while playing it back in FCP. However, when I export the video, the LFEs become very distorted. I tried adjusting a few audio settings, but to no avail. Does anyone know a way that I can export this video with undistorted LFEs?
Thanks!
Jordan

Welcome to the family, Jordan.
You have not specified what codec you used to export. It's most likely the codec cannot support that kind of audio data. It's also possible that your playback settings into your audio amplifier must be tweaked.
To get truly huge wide freq response from a digital file usually requires Dolby 5.1 and that gets really complicated. You can find some information in the online help systems for FCP and DVDSP.
Hope you get better advice.

  • MacBook core duo Sept. 2006  - the audio is a mystery.  Any analogue out has bass boost with bass distortion.  With digital out, by USB or Airport Express Airtunes, the frequency response is normal.  Somewhere, Apple put in an analogue bass boost.. why?!

Since new, my Macbook core duo has sent all audio to all analogue outputs with frequency distortion.  Some physical hardware or firmware in the analogue section adds a bass boost to the frequency response of the audio....  And, this boost adds bass frequency distortion to most, if not all, of the audio analogue output.
This happens for all audio sources, players, iTunes, videos, streaming audio/video, movies...  any sound source available to the Macbook.  No-one with whom I have talked about this problem, has ever heard of it.  Not elegant ideas for reducing it are to use equalisers on players and iTunes.  iTunes even has a preprogrammed "bass reduce" on its equaliser, as if it knows already that this inherent bass boost "feature" has been built into the Macbook, and cannot be defeated by the user.
The digital audio is of sufficiently high quality to play well on a very good to excellent sound-system;  so, it's a shame someone has mucked around with the frequency response of the analogue conversion, by designing the frequency distortion right into the computer.  This motherboard, (which includes the sound-section), has been replaced, along with the speakers, and everything sounds exactly the same as it was before.
To receive a flat frequency response and no frequency distortion, I listen on one receiver using Airtunes, (it doesn't matter whether or not the analogue or digital output jack is wired analogue or connected via optical cable....  the freq. response is flat);  and I listen on a high-end stereo system using an USB output port to an A/D converter, passing the analogue result using long patch-cords connected to the "line-in" jacks of the stereo.  The bummer is that most of my audio sources are not derived from iTunes...  hence, I cannot use Airtunes with Airport express for them.  I've tried using "Airfoil" without luck.  The sound becomes distorted with sibilance and other frequency anomalies.
Question:  has anyone else discovered this sound imperfection in any Mac product?  And, does anyone know if Apple is aware of it?  Finally, has anyone found an Apple fix for the problem;  or, at least, come up with better solutions than I have?
Thanks heaps for any impute and answers you may supply!!  junadowns

This might not help you a lot, but if you want a stable system, try using packages from the repo wherever possible, look at the news before you update your system and don't mess things up (like bad configuration etc.).
When it comes to performance, you won't gain much by compiling linux by yourself! Just use the linux package from [core] or if you want a bit more performance, install the ck-kernel from
    [repo-ck]
    Server = http://repo-ck.com/$arch
(this has to go to the bottom of /etc/pacman.conf)
(use that one which is best for your cpu (in your case this might be the package linux-ck-corex).
Hmmm, Linux-ck-corex doesn't even load.. I am now trying to install the generic one. Hope it works.
Edit: I will first try linux-lqx...

  • Bass distortion Ipod classic

    Hi
any suggestions with regards to distorted bass on some music on my IPod classic.
Have tried importing at 192kbps and the Apple loss less recorder
    Have also used MP3gain
    equaliser settings on and off
and resetting the equaliser on iTunes
have also reset to factory state and installed up to date software
    All to no avail
    Any help would be great

  • Bass distortion on X-FI Fatality using Dolby Digital Live and PX5

I've purchased the Ear Force PX5 headset for use with my PS3, XBOx and PC. But I seem to be having some problems with my pc sound. I have a X-FI Fatality sound card installed on Windows 7 x64. I've enabled DDL and it sounds great. Unless the bass, wich distorts when getting loud. Everything else sounds great. It's the same in 5.1 and 7.1 settings. I've tried all setting I can thing on in the console launcher. The headset is hooked up via a optical cable. Anysuggestions on what it could be?

First of all it is not personal. I have nothing against you guys, your're not responsible for drivers development/testing. I'm fed up mostly with all those responsible for releasing buggy software without making proper checks if it will work. I know that you cannot say anything but I believe these guys are giving you headache as well; they don't have to listen complaints and deal with angry customers. First thing I would do is to get rid of your test manager . Releasing something without doing proper tests is just unacceptable; especially when product is suppose to reach thounsands of customers. Could you at least tell if driver developers were informed about this issue and trying to solve the problem? I'm buliding new machine and have to consider change of my soundcard; such information would very usefull. Cheers.

  • Audio from computer comes out with bass distortion (fuzz or clipping)

This just started happening, but it seems to affect every speaker system- the high end is OK, but the bass being put out by the computer is distorted, as if the "speakers" were being overdriven, but it occurs in all the output devices-my monitor speakers, my usb headset, and my tiny-jack headset, which seems to me to indicate that it's in the computer circuitry. Is there any way to equalize or adjust the signal coming out of the sound system?

I fixed it. False alarm. Thanks for looking. The problem was in iTunes. I had failed to mention that all the distorted sounds were coming out of iTunes. After I posted the original question, I tried trashing 2 of the 3 iTunes prefs-including the equalizer-then re-establishing my user ID. It worked. No more distortion, even on Tom Waits' Earth Died Screaming and Fannin Street.
    Sorry for any wasted time.

  • Bass distortion when plugging ipod into home stereo

My stereo system(including its speakers) and my ipod (with earphones and on my iMac)both play great. However, when I plug in my ipod to my stereo via the phono jack(no other jacks are free), some of the songs are distorted like my speakers can't handle the low bass. When I play the music directly from the CD on the stereo, it sounds great and there is no distortion.
I'm using the iPod connection kit and the volume is turned down on the iPod when I connect it to the stereo. Setting the iPod to a lower base setting on the equalizer in the iPod helps but it still isn't right.
Total frustration-I'd rather not try the output on any other jacks on my tuner because that would mean disabling a unit like my cassette deck (yes there are people who still own them).

As other posters stated, the phono jacks are designed for turntable cartridges. They are much more sensitive than the AUX inputs and have a non-linear frequency response to compensate for the non-linear response of the cartridges. Cartridges put out less signal for low frequencies so the phono pre-amp boosts bass -- which is why you notice the distortion more on bass.
Since you're out of inputs, you could add an external switch. Radio Shack sells a "2-Way Audio/Video Selector Switch (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2049644&cp=&pg=1&searchSor t=TRUE&sr=1&retainProdsInSession=1&y=9&origkw=rcaswitch&kw=rcaswitch&x=14&s=A-StorePrice-RSK&parentPage=search)" for $17. It also switches video signals -- which you don't need -- but you can just ignore those connectors. There may be a cheaper, audio only switch out there.

  • Beats audio bass distorting sound

I recently bought an HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC (A3G61AV), and have noticed that the sound is awful. The bass is way too overpowered. When listening to a song with a bass drum, for example, the other frequency ranges become quieter while the bass is active. Then, they "fade" back in as the bass sound deteriorates. The volume never changes, though.
I've tried playing with the beats audio settings, the windows audio settings, and reinstalling the driver. Nothing seems to work.
    Please help!

    Hi LinuxBoy,
I don't have a magic answer for you, but I do have a place for you to look to glean some real good general advice on your new Beats Audio setup.  The author does not "solve" individual issues, but the thread is a very good resource for finding out how to use that Audio system and to solve many of the "make it better" issues that we all have when we first encounter this new audio chip.

  • Quake 4, heavy bass distortion/x

I've got the Beyerdynamic DT770-pro/80 headphones that I use with my X-fi platinum card. I play a lot of quake 4 and I noticed that if I don't use the SVM option on game mode, I get A LOT of distortion especially when a lot of rockets are flying around, even at low volume levels. I've tried using an amp or plugging them directly into the soundcard instead of the bay, still does it.
My soundcard drivers are fully up to date, and I have openal enabled with EAX enabled in game and in game mode.Message Edited by kaluminati on 08-09-2006 04:5 PM

Anyone? Also, some times very rarely since installing the card, my third and biggest hard dri've (250gb) disappears from windows and music etc stops playing, but this has only happened 3 times in 3-4 weeks so far

  • 3GS bass distortion after iso 5 update

As with a lot of people out there who have updated there iPhone to iso 5 and have now found out that their music recordings sound completely terrible. I've read all I can on trying to fix the problem sound check on/off, lowering the volume in iTunes, playing around with the eq, wiping off all my music then re sync and putting it all back on. Nothing has worked all my recordings sound terrible and even worse if you use hi quality headphones or running on hi fi. I've spoken to apple support who have acknowledged there is a problem but have no date to give me on future update fixes. I have also noticed delays in certain functions of the iPhone including delays in tones, lock click, safari dropping out, touch screen locking up so that you can't do anything apart from close down apps or resetting the iPhone. I can live with the rest but not the music distortion. Is this apple holding us all to ransom I.e causing later models to slow down or not function properly so we have to upgrade phone ? All I know is people bought these products because they enjoy their music above anything else, to me having a phone and an iPod in one solves all my problems and apple product have reined supreme for sound quality, well until now. Apple pls take note and read all these problem forums because the new iOS 5 has ruined my music pleasure and a lot of other peoples too. It's a disgrace and needs immediate attention. Pls fix these issues before I have to seek ways of downgrading my firmware to one that works.

I thought it was me! Im having the same problem. Trying to get a wallpapers folder on my phone, and it creats another copy folder of it, only its named Photo Album. I tried to create a new album and copy all the pictures to the new one, and then remove the other two, but it just removed the pictures from the new album as well. Definitel,y needs to be fixed

  • Ipod classic eq distortion

I just bought the Ipod classic 160gb and when I adjusted the equalizer to e.g. rock hiphop r&b , the sound was just distorted. I can tell the bass is really distorted. You know if I turn off the equalizer to fix the problem , the sound is not so good. In addition , compared to Iphone5 when I adjusted the eq , the sound was so good , not distorted at all. So I need to know why apple made such equalizers in the ipod classic. If there's no way to fix this , Apple should do something to take responsibility for their costumers. I really cant' stand the sound. Thank you.

I recently bought a 30gb ipod video. Upgraded to
firmware 1.1.2. Loaded my music and started
listening. Many of the songs sound flat w/o any EQ
settings, so I turned the EQ on, and the bass
distorts like crazy. Sounds like crap.
So I brought it to the apple store, the "genius"
agreed with me and exchanged my ipod for a new one.
Same f'ing thing!!! Songs distort with EQ on.
Anyone else experiencing this problem? My freakin
$30 Panasonic CD/mp3 player sounds better than this
    $300 piece of junk.
I've tried it with the stock earbuds, and also with
some Sony headphones, and I get the same results.
And I've tried music I've downloaded, music I've
ripped from CDs, and music I've purchased from
iTunes. Some songs disort (even some I bought from
iTunes), and some don't. What's a guy to do?
    I'm in the same boat.
I bought a new ipod and it distorts when the eq it activated.I thought it might have been the inferior ear buds so i bought a set of shure E4s.Still Getting the same results. Then I updated the ipod.It still distorts when the eq is turned on.Even at low levels. So i tested the same musicon my laptop through my Pioneer Djm600 mixer with my e4s....They rocked alot louder with the bass setting on the eq turned up.Next I ran the music on my ipod through
My M-Audio bx8 Studio Monitors ....Still got the same distortion. This only happens with the eq turned on.
I don't know what to do now.....Can anyone tell me if apple is at least admitting to the probem....if its going to get fixed with new firmware....The problems there and I'm glad that its not just me.

  • Bass problem resolved - Can no one advise me please

Has the new 80 gig Ipod had the previous bass distortion problem resolved ?
The old 60 gig model showed significant bass distortion (bass drum etc) on some tracks and was a known problem.
I am thinking of buying the new 80Gig tomorrow - or - the Creative model - -can anyone advise right away please /
    Thank you
    Brian

Check through the forum and use bass distortion as a search - you will then see some time ago that a problem did exist. It was due as far as I know to the change of the output whcih caused an overlaod on deep bass especially when the equaliser was used. Apple knew about this and eventually posted a hardware 'upgrade' - however I do not know if this cured the problem as I then bought the Sony A3000. I would like to get the new Ipod but not if this problem still exists.

  • TEST IN PROGRESS! THE ZEN VS IPOD SO

My wife just brought an 4th gen 20gb Ipod ( I have the zen touch) and we will preform a taste test if you will on the both of them. We will download 4 genes of songs( r/b , house, rock, celtic) at the same bit rate(same songs) and will play them at the mid -high volume rang at different eq setting for each person blindly and we'll find out just which is better in sound tonight , or if there is really no difference to be heard. I'll Post the results before 0:30pm tonight. So keep watch.

Ok people we used 4 songs...()Enya's Carribean Blue(celtic vocal settings on "Acoustic" for the zen and "Acoustic" for the Ipod, both set to 28kdps,44khz volumes set 8 clicks for the highest level. Results in clarity = Zen touch clearly better ..my wife and I both knew which was better within 0 seconds of start up time on complete test cycle. The Ipod has good sound BUT it sounds like it trying to play under a small layer of water that drowns out the sound a LITTLE. I guess this is thanks to the 97 s/n ratio which some people say you can't hear with your human ear. I guess we have super ears then, because we did.
(2). 2nd test song ...r/b Mariah Carey "Close My Eyes"(using "pop" settings on the zen touch and "R/B"/and 2nd time with "pop" settings trying to be fair)to test the music-to-vocal sound ratio ( seeing if bass or instruments would drown out the vocal beauty ). Again the Clarity of the Zen touch won over again, clearly. It's bass was not as strong as the Ipod's but was clearer. The Ipod bass sounded like it was adding to the drowning sound that I mention above.
(3). 3rd test was Dieselboy jungle mix w/dj jerome,dj dara, and grooverider. We wanted to test which could handle HARDER bass without distortion. The Ipod was the winner on that test. It seemed the harder the bass demands were for the song, on the eq setting for "disco" for the zen ...the worse it got, basically too much( maybe placed on another setting it would have preformed better but I had to place it on the heaviest bass setting as I did with the Ipod to keep it fair). Where the Ipod was set on "Bass Boost" and still left some clarity in place.
(4). And Finally Rap. We used David Banner's "See About Ya". Both unit keep there orginall setting, even though we could have changed the Ipod's setting thanks to their many Eq setting. And both came back kinda equal except for the cleaner bass that the Ipod projected under high bass demanding setting and songs.
    ZENT=2
    Ipod=2
    Bottom Line
***If you don't have both you wouldn't be disappointed in either one. Both by themselves are good sounding machines. It's only when you put them against each other will you ever notice a difference and that difference equals to clarity sound for Vocals for zen and Bass distortion handling for the Ipod(or basically higher volume handling). Hope this helps clear up any questions on the two units.

  • Bad quality MP3 downloaded

I have downloaded 5 mp3's from OviStore.  One of them is of very bad quality.  Bass distorts even on low volumes.  Do I have any recourse?

    @Mystic -
I'm posting same info here as on another forum where I saw your post - hoping to get some info/awareness from others...
I'm having same 'upgrading to iTunes 8.0 has made my iTunes library sound like poorly compressed 40 kbps net-radio crap' (approximately). Thought at first my speakers were blown but experienced same on headphones; tested that it's not my Mac's sound-card by playing an .MP3 in-browser which sounded normal.
Any music through iTunes since 8.0 upgrade sounds awful: trebles are virtually absent, low end frequencies are muddy; mid-range is relatively untouched; all my tunes sound like they were ripped at 40 kbps and "compression-sound" is overwhelming. It's occurring w/ the gamut of sound files in my iTunes library: .MP3's (constant and variable bit rates from 128 - 320 kbps), AAC's ripped from CD's (160 - 300'ish kbps) and purchased AAC's from iTunes store. Multiple combinations of disabling and re-enabling Sound Enhancer and Sound Check in iTunes as well as disabling / re-enabling the EQ (Window > Equalizer) have not resolved.
Everything coming through my iPod Touch sounds perfect as usual as well as music played outside iTunes i.e. games and music through Safari or FireFox.
I updated both iTunes and Quicktime within past week through Software Update, so not sure yet if it's caused by one or the other. For street cred., I'm a long-time musician and work in i.t. system ops. / Mac freak, so while certainly not infallible I'm going to edge past this being user error on my part. A thousand blessings on anyone w/ some thoughts, tips...cheers.
