Batch capture from self contained quicktime movie??

we have an edl and a 40 minute quicktime movie, but no tape.
is it possible to automatically parse the quicktime movie based on the edl (rather than manually subclip the master clip)? Like using log and capture, but with a digital file? Log and Transfer, maybe?
the timecode addresses should all be accurate.
TIA

  • Can't bring self contained Quicktime movie into DVD Studio Pro?

Is this possible in FCS 1? I'm trying to bring my self contained movie from FCP into DSP so I can encode it (compressor takes FOREVER). Any ideas? Thanks.

If it takes forever in compressor, add extra time for DVDSP!
How big is the file? What format are you encoding in?

  • Self Contained Quicktime Movie...NO!

Why is it that if I load I clip into the viewer and mark IN and OUT I get the option to export a Quicktime Movie...but if I locate a shot on the timeline and MATCHFRAME the only export option I have is Quicktime Conversion? I have to export small sections for green screen comping in After Effects, and hunting for the shots is a major pain.
Yes, even us BIG GUYS ask questions...

Okay the problem is that the clip in your timeline is an independent clip - not that it wants to drink and smoke and hang around with loose women - it is no longer connected to anything in your browser. This can happen when you copy a sequence from another project, maybe you deleted an instance of the source clip from your browser, etc.
Whatever the cause, when you "f" or find or "match", FCP generates an "in-memory" instance of the clip from your timeline in the Viewer. Whenever this happens, FCP won't let you use Export QuickTime Movie... - to get around this, just drag the clip from the viewer into the browser, it is no longer only "in memory" and you'll then be able to use Export QuickTime Movie...
I'm not here to make apologies for the circumstances, just describing the behavior and how to get what you want from the system...

  • Dropped audio when sequence rendered to self contained quicktime movie

last week i rendered my project to quicktime movie file and all was fine --today --after having done some minor tweeking of the project a clip is missing audio when i send project to quicktime--i've tried rebuilding the troublesome clip--the clip has a segment of audio with one segment that is linked to it and 2 other clips that xdissolve before and after the linked items --total duration about 30 seconds---i've checked audio on and made sure there are no track volume adjusters turned down---is this an fce hd problem or quicktime and might the sequence be corrupt?--i'm at a loss with this one? any ideas folks?

Try Mixing Down the audio just before you export.

  • Cannot export a self contained Qucktime movie

As of yesterday I have lost the ability to export a self contained Quicktime move from FCE. The sequence is complete and rendered and I have exported as recently as last month but now it simply makes what's known as a reference movie with the suffix .mov
The Export drop down menu still displays all the Quicktime options.
Additionally the Quicktime icon in my dock when clicked displays a question mark. I tried downloading Quicktime but still no go.
    Please help Tom

Right but what I am trying to convey is that I need to generate the brushed chrome framed, high quality, up-loadable, stand alone video that I used to get with ease and I cannot get that with my FCE. What are you calling it, what is the proper term because I always called them Quicktime. I made one less than 2 months a go.
Quicktime is present in my System Prefs but is not in the dock. When it was a question mark appeared over it. I cannot find it, launch it, etc.

  • Exporting self contained quicktime

I'm fairly new to compression. I've noticed alot of comments saying not to export to compressor from the timeline in FCP, but to export a self contained quicktime. Then encode in compressor.
Doesn't this A)take more time as your exporting twice
    B)take up alot more space.
Is it just a compression time issue or do you get better quality results when exporting the self contained QT first.
    Thanks

    Overall you get better quality
A)take more time as your exporting twice
Can be a bit more time, but worth the results. Generally I find that it is faster to some degree, exporting from Final Cut to Compressor gets slow from rendering and feeding the frames in. Also if you want to tweak the encoding rates after the first encode, having the self contained movie will be faster
    B)take up alot more space.
It does take up more space, but it is definately worth getting an extra drive to do this, really worth it because of the quality, potential reencodes, etc.

  • Basic question... Mpeg2 vs Self-contained Quicktime?

Hello, I am kind of ashamed to post this question only now but nothing is
    losf for asking...!
I have so far made dvds with a Quicktime mov. file, which is
Self-contained movies exported from Final cut, believing that it is the only way.
But actually there is Mpeg2! with options to choose mbps ect.
I have noticed that the color of dvds are slightly different; Mpeg2 has
more deepness while Quicktime mov. less. But other than that,
    it doesn't seem problematic.
Must we use always Mpeg2 or can se use self-contained Quicktime files as well?
    Still on an elementary level,
    Thank you!!

Better to encode as m2v outside of DVD SP and not bring in a .mov

  • Playing back exported Quicktime (self contained DV movies) at 16:9?

    Hey all,
When I export a 16:9 quicktime movie it plays it back in Quicktime in 4:3 squeezed.
Anyone know how to make Quicktime play it in the correct aspect ratio?
    Thanks
    Final Cut 4.5.

When I export a 16:9 quicktime movie it plays it back in Quicktime in 4:3 squeezed.
Anyone know how to make Quicktime play it in the correct aspect ratio?
In case you're not aware, this is a playback issue specific to QT Player. That is, the anamorphic flag is there, QT Player, unfortunately, doesn't read it. (So, say, if you're planning to make an Anamorphic DVD, you shouldn't alter your export process)
However, if this QT movie is meant for the web (or for a sound designer or someone of that ilk)...
From the menubar, File > Export > Using QuickTime Conversion
In your Save dialog, click on Options. Then, under Video, set a custom size of 1024x576 or 720x405 (or some size maintaining the 16:9 aspect ratio).
[This being that this is a QT conversion, make sure you select the right codec]
Click OK and let FCP do it's thing - the output file should now play correctly in QT Player (or embedded in a web page)
Or did I miss your issue?

  • Can't Export from FCE to QuickTime Movie w/o recompression

I have problems with choosing the correct settings for export of a FCE video clip to QuickTime Movie. I want the best possible quality (without recompression).
    In the manual it says:
"Exporting a Self-Contained Movie Without Recompressing the Media
If you choose to export a self-contained movie, you have the option to not recompress the media in your clip or sequence. If you deselect the Recompress All Frames option and choose Current Settings from the Setting pop-up menu, Final Cut Express simply copies frames from existing media files into the new file with no recompression."
I can't find that option in FCE 4.01 - is it a mistake in the manual? My source media was captured from miniDV tape and the captured media file has the following formate:
Codec: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, Linear PCM, Timecode
    Color profile: SD (6-1-6)
    Total bit rate: 29,794
My exported file has this format:
    Dimensions: 720 x 480
    Codec: Linear PCM, H.264
    Color Profile: SD (6-1-6)
    Audio Channels: 2
    Total bit rate: 2,151
I have seen this question in the FCE archive and people simply say there is no recompression in FCE Export to QT Movie, but clearly there is since I see the H.264 codec listed in my output file and the bit-rate is a about 1/14th the rate of the original source material. The output file size is also much smaller. What gives. How can I get an unrecompressed file out of FCE so I can send it to a coworker for futher editing with his FCE.

Does anyone else have anything to add to this thread. I'm, sure I'm using Export to QuickTime Movie and not using QuickTime Conversion and from the file specifications I've given above, it is clear that a 14:1 compression took place.

    Double check:
There are only three options in the QuickTime Movie export window.
    1. Include: The Audio and Video, Audio Only or Video Only.
    2. Markers: Select whateve you want or don't want.
    3. The Make Movie Self-Contained selection check box.
    Is this what  you see?
The export will mirror the Sequence or selected part of the Sequence.

  • Audio Not Syncing After Offline Conversion/Batch Capture from OfflineRT-DV

    WORKFLOW:
    1. Shooting HDV on a Sony HDR-V1U (DF/NDF Timecode setting is AUTO on the camera)
    2. Using the camera to downconvert to DV as I import into FCP 7 (final product will be NTSC DVD).
    3. I first capture and log using the OfflineRT NTSC (Photo JPEG) preset
    4. I make my Edits, and then use Media Manager to create new project and create offline media referenced by duplicated items. (Set sequences to: DV NTSC 48 kHz)
    5. The clips I need are then batch captured using Capture Preset: DV NTSC 48 kHz
    PROBLEMS:
    A. As I'm initiating my batch capture in step #5 above, the following warning is generated:
WARNING: You are about to capture Drop Frame media from a device currently detecting or configured for Non-Drop Frame media. If you proceed, you may experience changes in logged in and out points, problems relinking media, or removal of master clip relationships.
    B. When I playback my sequence, the in/out points are off by several seconds. (like the media within the clip slid ahead several seconds--to fix it, I would have to slide each clip back)
    QUESTIONS:
Q1: How can I properly execute my workflow while avoiding the WARNING above and the problem with the in/out points?
NOTE: The OfflineRT clips in the original project (#3 above) are shown as DF (semicolon in timecode), but the duplicated clips in the DV project (#4 above) are NDF (colon in timecode). I have already tried changing my capture preset to Firewire NTSC NDF, recapturing the clips, and the result is the same.
Q2: Should the capture preset be the same or different when logging the first (OfflineRT) and second (DV NTSC 48kHz) times?

Wish I had a simple answer for you, stay tuned, some folks who actually use those cameras will drop by sooner or later.

so neither camera captures properly? that's odd. We know the Canon is going to give you trouble but the Pani should work.
Try searching the forum for your camera models, see what comes up. Many different cameras shoot their own versions of various image, frame, and pulldown formats.

  • Exporting from imovie to quicktime movie

I have a 1080i HD movie in imovie I want to export to a quicktime file. In imovie the file is 50 gigabites. When I export at full quality it turns it from 16:9 to 4:3. When I go to expert settings and render it to a quicktime movie only the sound comes through...no video. This only happens with this particular movie. Other short movies I have are compressed to quicktime in HD just fine. I need suggestions how to render this from imovie to quicktime so I can keep the video in HD.

I tried that and it makes a file without
    video...sound only.
Itsounds like you didn't have the Sound box checked.

  • Batch Capture From File

I have a file that was captured remotely and shipped to me on an external drive.
I now have to take a batch list from the supplier and create the subclips from the remotely captured file.
I have tried using the Reconnect Media function, but the batch list has the clips numbered 001... and the Captured file is the reel number....
    Any thoughts?

I might be misunderstanding you, but my first impression is - that dog ain't gonna hunt. I don't think it's possible to create subclips directly from a Batch List.
I'm thinking you could enter the TC numbers from the Batch List into the Viewer with that one clip loaded, and create Markers for each set of In/Out. (You can specify an In and an Out for a given Marker.) Then, create Subclips from the Markers.
Tedious? You betcha. I hope someone has a better idea that would work.

  • Batch Capture from Offline Sequence

I have some older projects that I need to revisit and since the original capture files are no longer around I told FCP to batch capture the sequence from the original media (actually AVCHD files on folders). However it only brought in about 80% of the footage leaving the remaining 20% offline.
I went to the browser and manually brought those files in - so I managed to recover the sequence in the end, but is there anything I could have done wrong to make it only bring in 'some' rather than 'all' the offline media for a given sequence?

Create a new sequence and delete all the audio in the timeline. This should reduce the amount of media needing to recapture. It still may show a time larger than the length of your sequence. Even with out handles. Not sure why.
Also, make sure all the clips have timecode and a reel number. It won't deleted the unused portions if it doesn't have it.

  • Batch Capture from a FCP sequence

When I select a sequence for batch capture with no handles, the system reports much more media to be captured than the total running time of the clips. Why should this be?
Alternatively, suppose I wish to import an off-line sequence at a higher resolution, how should I re-capture just the media+handles that's used in my sequence?

I want to know the best way to batch convert movies in Quicktime Pro with H.264 compression and save as a .mov file?
The QT Pro Player is not, in and of itself, a batch processing application. You can, however, parallel process your files easily enough. Simple open your additional source files and set up your export options for each. As each new export begings, a new progress bar will appear in your export window. If you wish true sequential batch processing, use an application like MPEG Streamclip (free) as your "front end" to access the QT structure for exportation.
