Batch List to EDL

Having already captured media, i am planning to take notes, export a batch list in .txt format so i can re-order items to configure a paper edit/first cut... can i then re-import the batch list and create an EDL to use to re-connect media, to make that first cut? do i use media manager?
thanks

a batch list is all the items in your project. an EDL is a list of edits you've made on video layer1.
One does not necessarily produce the other
you need to do a ruff edit first from your captured material.
are you asking this because someone else is going to do the edit?
If so consult with them.

  • Batch Lists

I have a program that captures and inputs meta data about the video clips. The program can output to FCP using EDL and Batch Lists. The problem I have is that I cant seem link the batch list generated to the already captured footage. It seems all the instruction for batch edit lists is for use when capturing from tape which is no good to me as I have already captured the footage and have the edit list already just need to be able to ling . Can anyone help me please.

importing a Batch List will generate a list of offline clips relating to the in and out points as dictated by your logging software.
if you have already captured the footage and simply want to link to it, then just select all of the offline clip items and choose File > Reconnect Media... from the main menu.
in the Reconnect File dialog that follows press the "Locate" button and navigate to the folder containing the captured media. select the media file and press "Choose"
with a bit of luck and a following wind it should reconnect all your "offline" clips to the original captured media.
if the winds not blowing your way you might need to reconnect each clip individually

  • Exporting a batch list of a FCP Sequence

    Hello,
I am trying to find a way to export a batch list of a sequence from FCP, with TC and reels etc. I've exported clips and subclips bins as batch lists without problem for import onto an AVID.
Is there a way, ANY WAY, to export a sequence as a batch list, EDL... ?

If you are transfering a project to an Avid, Automatic Duck is, without a doubt, the best way to go.
If you can't afford that, you can always go the EDL route, select your sequence (make sure all your video is on one layer, or if necessary, export separate lists for each layer) and select Export EDL...

  • Batch Listing Metadata for Offline Files

    Hello all -
I'm using Premiere CC 2014 on OSX. I'm trying to do a batch list export of the metadata for a few dozen offline clips in my project.
    Here are the details:
I need the filenames and video ins and outs (NOT the media start and end) for all of my media files to put in a spreadsheet for archival purposes. I don't actually have access to the media itself - just to the project file.
When I do a batch export by highlighting all of the files and going to File>Export>Batch List, the only three columns that export are the filename and the media start and end. I'm hoping to get an export with all of the columns of metadata so that I can narrow it down to just the data I need. Basically, this is the info that I want to be able to put in a spreadsheet:
And this is what I'm getting when I do the batch list export:
Does anyone know if this is possible?
    Thanks!

  • Batch list import is picky about line terminations in the text file

After running into trouble trying to compose a batch list for import, I isolated the issue:
The text file that you attempt to import must have "carriage return" characters at the end of each line. It can have a "carriage return" and a "line feed", but it cannot have only a "line feed".
If you feed Final Cut a text file that does not meet this criteria, it will barf up this error message:
One or more items on the header line do not match valid Browser column headers.
Line terminators have been the cause of many a problem over the years! Typically, MSDOS/Windows systems tend to create text files that use a CR-LF combo. While Mac OS was typically just a CR. And UNIX systems have typically been just an LF. However, since Mac OS X is now a hybrid of older Mac ways, and UNIX ways, you can find mixed situations there. For example, the Mac OS X Text Edit program saves out files with just an LF, and thus can't be directly used to create batch lists for Final Cut.
So, you need to be careful what means you use to create batch list text files.
Hope this helps some poor soul some day!

I am trying to export a batch list created in FCP 5.1 to someone with 6. I follow directions, export and save and then e-mail the file. When he tries to import it, he gets that message ("One or more items on the header line do not match valid Browser column headers"). But I have tried re-importing it from my desktop and have no problem. Is there a problem going with such simple data from 5.1 to 6? Is it possible that the e-mail transmission is corrupting the files?
    Thanks for suggestions.

  • Batch List: How to capture clips inc info, from disk instead of tape

We have a client's edit log on Excel, including reel no, in/out, scene, description, log note etc. Usually we import this batch list to FCP, then batch capture from DVCAM tapes, so all clips have all their info - great.
In this case, the material is already digitised and the client has logged from DVDs burned with timecode from the digitised material being placed in FCP sequencecs with timecode generator filter.
Is there a way to 'batch capture' clips from the digitised material, so that we keep all the client logging info, as we would if we were capturing from tape?

Shane has got it right - we want to automatically build a sequence using that batch list. Or somehow have FCP make new clips or subclips from already captured footage... so if your verdict is right Shane, looks like we may have to go the manual route...
although - just occurred to me - for each clip, I could go to the digitised source sequence, duplicate it, open copy in timeline, enter clip's in and out tc in the viewer - and that will give me a copy of each clip as a sequence - rename that sequence as per the clip, and we're done.
But it's still of course more laborious than batch capture from tape; this is a concern going forward as we are switching to XDCAM EX, so of course the route to enable this client-edit-logging ( http://www.creationvideo.co.uk/info/timecode/ ) that we've always offered clients is no longer valid as the material is already online....
    Any suggestions still welcome!

  • Reconnecting Issues with Batch List

    Hello,
I am working with a client who created a ton of sub-clips and sent me a batch list of them. He is using FCP 7.0.3 and I am using 6.0.6. When imported, all of the subclips show up with the same name in the browser window (not sure if this is standard as I haven't used batch lists before).
    I am having two issues:
    - Since there are a ton of subclips, I am obviously hoping to reconnect all of them at once. However, when I go to reconnect, even though I highlight all the clips in the browser window and have checked off the "reconnect all files in similar path" box- it will only reconnect one sublicip at a time.
    - For some reason when the sublips do reconnect (one at a time) they are converted to 4:3 from anamorphic- so I have to go into Item Properties and manually check off the anamorphic box to make them normal.
Obviously I can continue with the project, but it will take me a long time to reconnect each sublicip individually and then re-anamorphic (sorry for the made up word) each one manually. It's going to take a long time.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

    Michael,
Thanks again. I understand now what you are saying. When I reconnect, the dialogue box lists the files as coming from an "Unspecified Path." However, It's finding the files just fine- and it says it can reconnect the clips. However, when it does, it only reconnects one subclip at a time, even though I have highlighted them all. That's the issue. Since all the sublicips I am trying to reconnect have the same name in the browser (they are all named the same as the original clip), FCP will only connect one at a time (apparently it seems to think that the files are all one because they have the same names).
Same thing with selecting multiple clips and then going to Item Properties and clicking on anamorphic- FCP thinks all the clips are really one clip, so it only reconnects one at a time.
Hopefully I am being clear with the problem.
    Thanks!

  • Does FCP add content to manually created batch lists upon capture?

When you create a batch list text file manually and import it into FCP, will FCP automatically add the content for columns that you did not included such as frame size, Vid rate, etc. Those are redundant. I'd like to have them though.

I tried it and when you check item properties by right clicking the media clip, it does log format settings, but it seems to only log whatever was manually logged in the batch list under logging info, although I'm still not fully sure what all of the columns under logging info stand for anyway.

  • Export "Batch" list in FCE???

    Greetings.
Can you export a "batch list" the way you can in FCP? I would love to be able to print out a log file of my browsers files, but can't figure out how.
    Thanks.

No, you can't. The best you can do is take a screen shot of the browser.

  • Can't import an Avid batch list, keep getting "heading error:

I'm trying to import a text file batch list into FCP HD from an Avid. I have the top line of the file with the headings NAME, DURATION, MEDIA START, MEDIA END, TAPE, and each subsequent line has the info deliniated with tabs. I thought this was the right way to do this. Anyone have any tips for importing this file?

got a feeling your headings are wrong ... change "Tape" to "Reel" and drop "Duration"
    I would go with:
Name Reel Media Start Media End
    cheers

  • Final Cut Crashes when I try to export a batch list - help!

I'm doing a very large documentary project and each tape has extensive log notes. I use the batch list function to export tabbed text files and convert them to excel - very useful in the creative process when figuring out story structure etc.
But now every time I try to export a batch list final cut crashes - any ideas on how to get around this?
    please help.

Are you batch exporting the enrire project maybe?
Might try selecting just your capture bins and trying to batch export those. Could be a sequence or graphic file making it go kookoo.
If the sheer size of it is making FCP choke you could try selecting a single bin and then doing batch export. Do that for all your bins and assemble them in excel.

  • Error reading batch list

This used to be easy as far as I can remember last year imports. Now I cannot import a batch list and FCP 6.0.4 gives me the error message "One or more items on the header line do not match valid Browser column headers." The list is a tab-delimited simple text file with just four headers - Name, Media Start, Media End and Reel. They are exactly the same headers that are minimally necessary for successful batch list imports as described on page 311 of the user manual; no misspellings.
    Does anybody have an idea?

    Hi
I've received two responses to this problem on the Creative Cow. These suggestions didn’t work for me, but they did help me find a workaround.
    In summary:
tab delimited text files do not work for my set up
    cleaner text files do
I think one issue here may be that I don’t have Microsoft Office. I use iWork, which I like a lot for all the classic Apple reasons. As I suspect the number of iWork-FCP users in the world will grow, I’ve uploaded another zip file which contains batch lists that work, batch lists that don't work, a summary of what I think are the reasons, plus two Automator workflows:

  • Can I open up a FCP 5.0 project in FCP 4.5? If not, help with Batch Lists!

I know that normally one cannot do this, but surely there must be a way. Editors are constantly shuttling between machines, does apple provide no way to do this? If not, it essentially means that if you start a project in 5, you have to always work on that project in 5, even though many FCP stations (at least in NYC) don't have it yet.
What is even more irksome is that when you export a batch list from 5 in an attempt to import to 4.5, it says "some column headings do not match" and it is essentially useless without tweaking in Excel for an hour. Then, when you finally do import a batch list, there are no bins, just raw shots.
Why god, why? Sorry to rant but this sort of user-unfriendly stuff is infuriating when you're dealing with clients and are on tight deadlines. Any advice?

  • Batch List Columns Confirmation

    Hey everyone,
Just wanted to confirm something in regards to batch lists. Either myself, or the AC will be creating batch lists in Excel on set. My question is, can you create columns (as long as they are exactly as in FCP) for take/shot, angle, etc?
I know the standards are Name, Media End, Media Start, Reel. However, after reel, can I create a column for scene, take/shot, etc?
    Thanks In Advance!

  • Batch List Invalid Headings Error

It was brought to my attention that manually created Batch List files will sometimes generate an error about "invalid headings". In these cases, the error was misleading. After some experimentation, it seems that files that use ASCII 10 as a line terminator (rather than 13) will generate this error.
I would consider this a bug, but to anyone else experiencing the problem, I've created an AppleScript to "convert" the text, available here:
