Batch Monitor and the Mac OS X Firewall
This is more or less what people have been saying for a few years now, "When I use Compressor the Mac OS X firewall repeatedly asks permission to allow incoming connections for the Batch Monitor! Why?!?!"
No matter how many times you click to approve or deny, the firewall alert reappears every five to twenty seconds. There seem to be many, many people with this problem. So far, the only solutions are to:
1) Shut off the Mac OS firewall
2) Switch the Mac OS firewall to "Allow only essential services" every time I want to use Compressor (a cumbersome solution at best)
2) Keep clicking the buttons
3) Don't use Compressor
While some might argue that Compressor is a poor substitute for a real video conversion utility, for the vast majority of users, it's the only game in town.
So, dear Apple, I humbly beg you on behalf of the literally thousands of users who deal with this problem, please either create a solution or suggest one.
I'm still on Final Cut 6 and Compressor 3. So, if anyone knows that the latest release solves this issue, I'd love to hear it.
I'm dealing with this same problem and have actually noted that you are confirmed about the YEARS because I found this problem posted December 6, 2007

It's unfortunate that a 'Bad Taste' was left after that reply from the guy who called you a 'nitwit' - I didn't even pay attention to his name - at least you have one demiankz - and took the time to start this post. I humbly thank you.
At any rate, I was determined to find out - because I have always been struggling to 'Allow' it and last night I decided to 'block' it.
Does anyone know what is the right setting?
Also - one work around that has been working for me is this:
1) when the popup comes up (leave it up) - Open the firewall, unlock the settings padlock at the bottom left (if it is locked) -
2) find batch monitor and whatever the setting is - force a toggle i.e. if it is "allow" select "block" and visa versa - back to whatever you desire it to be. Just to force it to recognize you are changing it.
3) NOW answer the popup to match whatever you toggled to in the firewall.
4) lock the padlock again.
I've compressed a lot of jobs and I notice once I perform this it goes away for my entire job, provided I leave it alone until it finishes.
If you do something like browse the internet or work on other things, the message tends to pop up again.
Of course, after your job finishes, you will have to do this again - and that's why I wish people would keep responding to this post until we get an answer.
Persistence causes results. Negativity just causes - well, just ignore that.
At least attempt to be helpful, which I felt I have tried. It may work, it may not, or it may cause someone to recognize what the real problem is.
Good luck and hope we get an answer soon!

I already asked Sibelius why their product wasn't working and they told me it was my soundcard. I guess on the mac that would be the core audio?
Basically, what happens is that every time I use the music program Sibelius Student, it overloads the Midi and the system crashes. Why should this be? Sibelius doesn't seem to like my keyboard either, presumably for the same reason.

I have a Mac Pro using OSX 10.7.4. When using apple mail I click on the address icon to obtain email address and nothing happens. I've restarted both the application and the Mac but still won't open address book. Any ideas please.
Assuming you have these accounts set up in Mail, open preferences and under Accounts tab, edit the SMTP outgoing server list. Do you have a .mac address in the list? If so, delete it.
Are you using iCloud?
For the troubled account, select the correct SMTP server for that account in the box and check the box to use only that server with that account. -

I would like to set up a homegroup with a new Macbook Pro and 2 Windows PCs. The PCs are wired to an Airport Time Machine and the Mac is wireless. All computers have internet through the Airport Time Machine.
The method for setting up file sharing is described here:

accidentally removed from, sharing and permissions the admin user, and now i do not when i find the home icon at my computer i do not have permmission, and the mac does not works properly, lots of question mark at the dock ,please help
I'm going to assume that since you deleted your hard drive and all its files, you had a backup, yes? If the backup has an OS (bootable clone), then you can boot into it by holding down the option key when you start up you iMac and choose the backup drive. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper to copy the files back to your iMac.

Nvidia CUDA for 27" iMac and the Mac Pro
I want to use Adobe Premier CS5.5 and it's Mercury Playback engine. What Nvidia CUDA-enabled card should I get for the 27" iMac and the Mac Pro to use this feature in Premier CS5?
No. Open the App Store on one computer running Snow Leopard. Purchase and download Lion. On the other computer open the App Store, log on using the same Apple ID, re-download Lion at no extra charge.
Alternatively, see Burning A Lion Boot Disc -
I want to create an app. Can you tell me the difference between iOS developer program and the mac developer program?
Is the difference the device you're creating your app on, or for?iOS Developer Program is only for those who wish to develop iDevice apps. Mac program is for those only developing Mac applications. If you wish to do both, then you need to enroll in both programs.

09 I Mac goes asleep ends up with a spinning disk on the screen and the mac will not respond has to be rebooted
First this:
In EnergySaver deselect "put the hard disk to sleep when possible". You must logout after the setting to make this effective.
This probably will not solve it, but let it be deselected.
When the issue is still there:
Open Terminal;
copy/paste following command (after every command hit "enter" key)
pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
when the answer is not 3 write it down;
then copy/paste following command
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
reboot
Open Terminal;
copy/paste following command
sudo rm /var/vm/sleepimage
after that type EXIT in Terminal and close Terminal.
This does following for you:
it will set the hibernatemode to zero: the sleepimage (a copy of the complete ram) will not be written and the space on the HD is freed up.
This sleepimage does not do anything for you but taking time at sleep/hibernate and startup. It is an old remnant of earlier days. -

To switch off the monitor and the keyboard lights?
Hello,
Is it possible to switch off the monitor and the keyboard lights of a MacBook Air while I'm using it at home with an external monitor and keyboard?
Many thanks in advance!
manokaYou can turn off the keyboard lights by unchecking System Preferences > Keyboard > keyboard tab > Automatically illuminate keyboard in low light. Then use F5 to lower the keyboard to off.
The Monitor can't be switched off but can be reduced to almost off using the F1 key. -
I am using duel thunderbolt displays with a MacBook Pro. I only have the option to have sound come from one or the other. Has anyone thought of making the left channel come from both speakers on the left Monitor and the same of the right? If yes, how is that done? The MacBook Pro could even be a center channel if configured in that order.
See the following thread on the same topic:
2 Thunderbolt displays MBP = sound coming from both displays? -
