Batch Processing of Projects

Hi all,
Is it possible to have iMovie create movie files for several projects in one go? My usual work flow is to import a tape from my camcorder, split that into a couple of different events, create a few projects from each, and share to AppleTV.
The problem is that sharing the projects one at a time is tedious; I'd rather set them up and then let them run overnight. Can that be done within iMovie? If not, can it be done with Automator (I've never used it, but am looking for an excuse to try)?

AFAIK you can't batch your workflow, couldn't even do that in im6 (although you could have multiple projects open which seemed a little silly to me)

  • Can someone help me with a batch processing problem

I just got my first Mac and I just loaded Aperture and unfortunately a deadline is upon me. I am used to Photoshop but I'm lost here looking at Aperture. All I need to do right now is to pop in CDs full of photos and produce thumbnails of them to put in file folders on my hard drive. I figure it's an automated batch process, but I'm just not seeing it among the functions of Aperture. I know this request may annoy some users, but I sure could use the help right now and I promise to use the tutorial and manual in the future.

If what you mean is make a bunch of small jpegs - just import the images into an Aperture project - select them all and use export version to put them out in whatever size/format you want. If a preset does not exist for your purposes - create a new one with "edit.." from the presets drop down menu in the export version dialog.

  • SAP R/3 vs XI Batch Processing

We are planning to move some of our existing interfaces between legacy systems & R/3 to be processed through XI. We would like to do this in such a manner that the business doesn't get impacted much and also keeping the project costs to minimum.
Current interfaces use batch processing in R/3 with 1000's of records sitting in a file ftp'd from legacy system and a pre-edit ABAP program will validate the data and posts transactions in R/3 using BDC sessions. Errors will be reported through some custom application built in ABAP. Users will process the BDC session and correct the errors to post the documents. In some cases we use BAPI's but when the BAPI errors out a BDC session is created for processing the errors.
    We are on XI3.0 SP12 & R/3 4.6B
Can XI do all the stuff that R/3 does today in terms of batch processing and error correction by business user etc. What are the limitations and are there any workarounds to overcome them.

XI is not meant for that and cannot do that. XI is an integration engine and does not replace R/3 work.
What it means: XI can receive data and modify the data in mapping and deliver it to another system and invoke a process in case of R/3.
XI has 3 adapters for other SAP systems.
    1. IDoc
    2. RFC
    3. XI Proxy
    4. File Adapter (I dont think you want to create a file again, but one of my previous client used this option)
I guess you know about the first 2.
The third one is, when you receive the data from source system, modify it according to the requirements and pass it to an ABAP Class where you can write your own code.
Let me simplify this for your process.
When a file is received, XI can pick up the file and send it to R/3 System using XI proxy (in internal tables or structures) which will be executing a class. Within that class you can code to pass that data to your ABAP program with SUBMIT PROGRAM. This is just an example.
This cannot replace your BDC process, but can make it to do the same.

  • Where is it possible to batch process the size of images?--I am able to change pixel dimensions in image processor but not image size in inches.

Hi- I need to batch process images for video project.  I am able to change the pixel dimensions in the image processor but don't seem to have the option to change image size in inches.  Please advise!  Thanks

You don't need inches for video (or screen viewing in general). It all goes by pixel count. Inches is for print, nothing else.
But to answer the question, you can run actions in the Image Processor, and this is where you set size in inches. Just bring up Image Size, uncheck "resample image", and specify size. You'll notice resolution changes to reflect the fact that the existing image pixels are now redistributed over the new print size.
But again, screen doesn't care about size or resolution. It only counts pixels.

  • Just what is a batch process?

According to what I have read, one difference between FCE and FCPro is that FCPro can do a batch process. So for importing what would a batch import be. My vision is taht it would be selecting a bunch of different clips and then capture or import just those clips. I haven't worked with tape, just HDD so I am not quite getting the advantage of the batch option in FCPro vs just using FCE. I hope someone here can enlighten me.

I can see where this would be a big savings of hard drive space if a lot of the tape was not going to be used for a particular project. But viewing it in real time and marking the in points and out points seems like a lot of time.
But I guess you would be viewing it at some point anyway.
    Thanks for the information.

  • DVDSP preset question with batch processing.

    I hope someone can help.
When I drag my files that I want to batch process, where I can
choose the output, for example DVD HD, etc.
These presets have different times with them for video, like 120, 190, or even 30.
My question is, what is the difference between them? Does any of them produce better quality of the video?
My video files are .avi files and run about 30 minutes.
Also, does it matter which I choose as far as HD DVD, DVD best quality, etc., if these are already .avi files or just choose DVD HD and have the best quality possible?
Thank you for any help that is given.

About the numbers, the 30, 120, 190, etc. What do
    those numbers mean?
Are they minutes? And if they are minutes, does that
mean it goes by how a regular dvd has minutes on it
or does it go by how long each file is, or total size
    of project?
What those numbers mean are the amount of material that will fit on a DVD-5 based on the encoding settings, so in other words if you choose 120 it means that about 2 Hrs of running time of video will fit on the DVD encoded at that rate. Normal and high quality are whether it is a one pass or two pass
I am still a little confused.
I have 10 .avi files. Each one is about 30 minutes
    long and is about 300mb.
I am unsure on what video setting or settings to use
that will allow me to have at least the same quality
    as the files already are.
Encoding will reduce the quality, sometimes you may notice, other times not, but you have about 6 hours worth of material there. Depedning on what it is you can make a DVD-9, but unless it is very low motion probably not a DVD-5 (Also 300 Megs for 30 minutes of material (and I have not looked at new avi codecs recently) sounds like the material is already compressed heavily
To give you a rough idea, DV which is what comes from many consumer cameras with firewire, is compressed at a rate of about 5:1 already, and 9 minutes 20 seconds is just shy of 2 Gigs, so 30 minutes would be in the area of 6 Gigs of DV (or about 18 times the size of your files)
i have already done the audio portion of each file so
the video portions are all I need to do now.
Best thing to do is play with the settings, test small sections where there is less motion and more motion. In general 2-Pass is going to provide you with better results than one pass

  • HDR Toning Auto Batch Process

Hi, first time poster here...just recently got into timelapse photography and have been batch processing away to my hearts content. I have one scene that looks unbelievable with the "surrealistic" HDR toning preset. However, I record my action and set up the folders and set it to go, but it seems to want me to click "ok" after filtering each photo...there's 1685 of them, so not very keen on that.
I googled it before posting here and there is one other post online about it, but they start talking about scripts and I have no idea where they are or what to do with them...
    Any advice? Many thanks.

  • Can I desynchronize one station with batch process model?

    Hi,
My project has 5 stations run test in parallel. I decide to use batch process model since I want them to start and stop together. Beside start and stop, I have some certain part in the test sequence need to sync together. But in 5 stations, I want one station work without sync at these steps. I tried using batch synchronize with precondition but it looks like other stations still wait for the one I skip the sync. My another option is using rendervous with number of parallel thread is total - 1. I test and this works. But I still want to know if I can use batch synchronize step or not because this offer the start sync and exit sync feature.
    Thank you!

    Thanks for your answer.
I want to have something happens parallel with other threads but without affect by batch sync steps. I have multiple stations working parallel in assembly line. They are sync because of pick and place. But I want to have one process works as station manager who keep track of UUT between station and other environment condition like pressure, temperature.
    Thang
Generally, the intent of the TestSockets in the process models is that they will have a 1 to 1 correspondence to UUTs, does your 5th socket correspond to a UUT? In otherwords are there 5 UUTs under test at one time? UUTs often need things like report generation or database logging. Does your 5th socket require report generation? If not perhaps this 5th socket is really more of a utility thread and thus creating a new thread or execution at runtime makes sense for it. If your 5th socket instead does really correspond to a UUT that is being tested in parallel enitrely separately from the other UUTs then perhaps you should start up a new execution for that socket using the sequential model and just have that running at the same time as your other sockets are running with the batch model.
So it really depends on what you are using that 5th station/thread for as to what approach would likely work best.
    Hope this helps,

  • Batch processing and rendering multiple clips in SpeedGrade CC?

I'm new to SpeedGrade CC, just watched 2 hrs of Lynda training, and I'm just about ready to go. Before people jump on my question, let me walk through what my indended use will be.
Unlike most of the content / workflow that was discussed in the training, I'm not color grading a sequence of clips stitched together in a timeline, but multiple clips that have been pre-edited to length, that I want to apply the same color correction two. This will only be done to small groups of clips, maybe 4-5 at a time, but since I'm all about efficiencies, I wanted to ask what the best workflow for doing this is.
Let's assume that I've taken one of the clips and adjusted everything natively in Sg (no Dynamic link from Pr). I like where I ended up with the settings so I saved a .look preset file.
So what is the next best way to handle applying these settings to the other files? Creating mutliple, separate Sg projects doesn't seem the efficient way, and having to cue up each succesively for Render, equally as slow. In the lessons the instructor illuded to working with and processing "dailies", which I also assume would be achieved through a batch process, but that isn't covered.
    I appreciate the advice!
    Steve

Interesting ... process ... you have there. Hmmm. I can't think of any way you could work in Sg that isn't on a timeline. Whether made in PrPro or there in Sg(native) ... it's a video editing program, and that's done on a timeline. Plus the way the both PrPro and Sg are designed, you MUST define and name a project before you can start to work.
Now, other than where the working files for the project will be kept, you don't really have to complete the forms out in PrPro especially. After you give your project a name and say where it's files will be kept, you can simply skip the rest and when you create a new sequence & drop a clip onto it, the sequence settings will be set to match your footage.
Now ... do you have all one type footage (codec, frame size & rate) or different kinds, say some 1080p-24fps, some 720i-60fps, some 460p-29.976fps, that sort of thing?
You know, what I'm thinking ... might actually be the easiest. Create a project in PrPro ... and a new sequence for each type of footage. Use the media browser panel to import all your footage into the project panel ... drag & drop a few similar clips to a sequence, then DL that over to Sg (takes a couple seconds) to grade/look 'em. Save 'em back to PrPro, then render that sequence out. Then when you know you've got a good render, either delete the clips from that timeline & re-use it, or create a new one. Do your next group. Rinse and repeat, so to speak.
I take it you've no reason to save the sequences of graded clips past rendering them, so you should be able to use just the one "projects" and import folders as necessary, removing them as you will. You won't spend near any time with the "project" details, but the programs will be happy.
Again, as noted above you can either copy a grade to other clips on a sequence or put an "adjustment layer" over the clips of a sequence in PrPro (project panel: new item -> adjustment layer) and then grade that ... it will automatically be applied to all clips under it.
And before you ask again, there isn't any way to work a single clip without it being a "project" with a timeline. These aren't photoshop, where you can open a single image.

  • Batch processing and parallelism

I have recently taken over a project that is a batch application that processes a number of reports. For the most part, the application is pretty solid from the perspective of what it needs to do. However, one of the goals of this application is to achieve good parallelism when running on a multi CPU system. The application does a large number of calculations for each report and each report is broken down into a series of data units. The threading model is such that only say 5 report threads are running with each report thread processing say 9 data units at a time. When the batch process executes on a 16-CPU Sun box running Solaris 8 and JDK 1.4.2, the application utilizes on average 1 to 2 CPUs with some spikes to around 5 or 8 CPUs. Additionally, the average CPU utilization hovers around 8% to 22%. Another oddity of the application is that when the system is processing the calculations, and not reading from the database, the CPU utilization drops rather increase. So goal of good parallelism is not too good right now.
There is a database involved in the app and one of the things that does concern me is that the DAOs are implemented oddly. For one thing, these DAO's are implemented as either Singletons or classes with all static methods. Some of these DAO's also have a number of synchronized methods. Each of the worker threads that process a piece of the report data does make calls to many of these static and single instance DAO's. Furthermore, there is what I'll call a "master DAO" that handles the logic of what work to process next and write the status of the completed work. This master DAO does not handle writing the results of the data processing. When each data unit completes, the "Master DAO" is called to update the status of the data unit and get the next group of data units to process for this report. This "Master DAO" is both completely static and every method is synchronized. Additionally, there are some classes that perform data calculations that are also implemented as singletons and their accessor methods are synchronized.
My gut is telling me that in order to achieve, having each thread call a singleton, or a series of static methods is not going to help you gain good parallelism. Being new to parallel systems, I am not sure that I am right in even looking there. Additionally, if my gut is right, I don't know quite how to articulate the reasons why this design will hinder parallelism. I am hoping that anyone with an experience is parallel system design in Java can lend some pointers here. I hope I have been able to be clear while trying not to reveal much of the finer details of the application :)

You suggest that these synchronized methods do not promote parallelism. That is true but you have to consider what you hope to achieve from parallelism. If you have 8 threads all running the same query at the same time, what have you gained? More strain on the DB and the possiblility of inconistencies in the data.
    For example:
    Senario 1:
say you have a DAO retrieval that is synchronized. The query takes 20 seconds (for the sake of the example.) Thread A comes in and starts the retrieval. Thread B comes in and requests the same data 10 seconds later. It blocks because the method is synchronized. When Thread A's query finishes, the same data is given to Thread B almost instantly.
    Senario 2:
The method that does the retrieval is not synchronized. When Thread B calls the method, it starts a new 20 second query against the DB.
Which one gets Thread B the data faster while using less resources?
The point is that it sounds like you have a bunch of queries where the results of those queries are bing used by different reports. It may be that the original authors set it up to fire off a bunch of queries and then start the threads that will build the reports. Obviously the threads cannot create the reports unless the data is there, so the synchrionization makes them wait for it. When the data gets back, the report thread can continue on to get the next piece of data it needs if that isn't back it waits there.
This is actually an effective way to manage parallelism. What you may be seeing is that the critical path of data retrieval must complete before the reports can be generated. The best you can do is retrieve the data in parallel and let the report writers run in parallel once the data the need is retrieved.
I think this is what was suggest above by matfud.

  • Background Worker + batch processing

    Hi,
I have 2 issues in the same project.
    Issue 1:
I have a project using the Object API. I've created a VB.NET assembly that encapsulates the Object API's in this project. The assembly is instantiated from a VB.NET form application for testing. When calling one of the methods in the assembly by pressing a button the function runs fine. However, when running the same function from a background worker, it throws an exception. I've included a sample project here that replicates the issue.
    Issue 2:
The same project is also called from a batch file. When testing the app from the debugger, again it runs fine. When calling the app from the batch file, an exception is thrown instantiating the GroupWise Application object. Again, i've included sample code.
If anyone can shed some light on these isssues, I would appreciate it.
    Thanks
    Tim

  • Creating a moasic-batch processing question?

I 'volunteered' help to do a project for my daughter. For an
elementary school fundraiser, she wants to create four moasics -- 11X17 images --
one for each of four classes, with an 'Egyptian' theme -- at least one of the
images being of the pyramids of Giza.
The plan is this: several of the mommies will take their digital cameras to
school this week, and take photos of the children, and then let the children
snap away fill up the rest of the memory card. Assuming there are five
mommies, and that each provides a hundred photos -- they're going to put them
on CD's -- I could wind up with only 500 photos, and these moasic apps need
    tons more images.
My 'plan', such as it is, is to take these photos and duplicate them as many
times as necessary, and then change the color cast of some of the different
batches, e.g. -- some with a 'blue' cast, some with a 'sand colored' cast, etc.
The idea is, MacOSaiX will choose the blue for the sky, the sand for the sand,
    etc.
Questions: Given a big enough HD, and using PSE 4, can I easily duplicate
batches of the originals photos-- say 50 or a 100 at a time? Is there a
'batch' commend/process that would let me do that?
Ditto, changing the color -- can I apply the same color change to a large batch
of photos at the same time?
The PSE 4 Help seems to say I can 'batch process' all the files in selected
folders, but it doesn't mention duplicating all the images in the folder. It
does _seem to say that I could do the automatic 'color' adjustment.
Any help/suggestions to 'improve' this plan would be most appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Hal

That is what i ended up doing - basically batching up 100 items and then doing a service callout until all the items are processed (inside a pipeline pair). In this case I guess this works fine, but if this were a web service proxy instead of a MFL file proxy service it seems like the pattern is inefficient - I would do service callouts in the for each and aggregate the responses, then I'd need to call a service at the end (via a route) just to create a response (so it doesn't just echo the original request back). Or is there a better way?

  • Batch Processing Marker Ranges?

Is there a reason why I cannot change the sample type in the "Batch Processing Marker Ranges" operation? The window has an "Output Format" window where I can choose save the markers as different file types, so it seems like I should be able to. What I am trying to do is save a marked-up mp3 file as a bunch of 22050 hz wave files. It will let me save them as individual waves, but when I click on the "options" button, all I get is a window that says "Windows PCM: Format 32-bit data as," and everything is greyed out. What I have ended up having to do is a separate operation AFTER running the Batch Processing Marker Ranges operation by opening "File/Batch Processing," which WILL let me convert the 44.1 Khz files to 22050 Hz. But it seems so inefficient to have to run two batch operations.
    Advice?
    Thanks.
    Ken

I figured it out. In case anyone is interested, Windows reserves certain file names because they are system files, like "COM1, COM2, etc." My client specified the file names for the project, which is why I tried to use "COMx." I guess even he didn't know.
Anyway, I just changed the file name and it worked as per usual.
    Cheers!
