Batch Rename and Restructure Folders and Pictures within

Hello, I have been messing around with Automator trying to get Automator to batch rename my pictures. It seems that Automator is a little limited in renaming the way I would like to.
I would like to rename all of my pictures to have a folder structure (I don't believe Automator can do this part for me) of:
"Pictures/Nikon Transfer 2/Date Taken yyyy - dd- mm/DSC_xxxx"
Currently, after trying one of the programs out, I have altered the filename over several of them to a mess of something like "2012-01-24-DSC_0295.JPG.JPG" where the folder structure I was trying to achieve was put into the filename and the extension was added into the filename.
I have tried several programs (freeware and open source) to achieve this to no avail. I would like to stay away from trail software and paid software. If anyone knows of any Automator tricks or other free, non-trial programs that can do such a thing please let me know! It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much for any feedback! PSkilton

There are several renamers on the appstore. I use one that is called "A Better Finder Rename", which for me is very good: you find the download button here:

That sounds very frustrating.
By the way, does it say "Download image" or "Save Image As"? Just checking whether you have an add-on downloader in the mix that might be relevant. If you do have an add-on, try using the built-in command.
Do you also crash if you save from here:
right-click page > View Page Info > Media tab > (select image) > Save As
I assume you have seen this article and tried these things: [[What to do if you can't download or save files]].
Have you tried the new Reset feature in Firefox 13? This duplicates certain key data from your active settings folder into a new one, bypassing some add-ons and custom settings. Your plugins will still be active, but could be disabled manually if you like.

If the new settings folder has the same problem, you can switch back if you like using Firefox's Profile Manager.

2 questions - 1st relates to .ion files and 2 folders and sub-folders

I'll try and keep this brief in the hope someone can take the time and help me! My background is that I'm a Location Manager for Film and TV and have about 250,000 images (all with discriptions attached!)
1st I have used Acdsee on windows for the past 8 years (V4, as its stable)), I've now moved over to Mac and want to import my images that are all tagged with discript.ion files. Can I do this and how (i must retain the info in these files. )
2nd i may have 50 folders each with 20 - 50 sub folders (so on and so on) if I import them all into iPhoto (and view them on the same page) I'll go nuts, how can I retain my main folders and have sub folders inside them?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I don't think iPhoto would be what you'd want to use. You should look into a DAM (digital asset management) application. I use both iView MediaPro andMedia Expression which are much more versatile and powerful than iPhoto.
I suggest you visit the DAM Forum and see what they say about the various applications that are available. I don't know if EM can read the .ion files but I'm sure someone in the DAM forum can put you on the right path. A wealth of information there.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

Why can't I drag and drop folders and files in finder?

I was sorting out my folders and files when all of a sudden it stopped letting me drag and drop.
I didn't go on 'Show View Options'.
I've also checked my trackpad settings and all is as should be.
Any idea what's up?

What do you mean by this? What symptoms are being displayed? Are you getting an error message when you try to drag and drop? We need more information to help you diagnose the problem.

IMAP and sub folders and (messages)

I recently added many folders from on "On My Mac" sidebar to my MobileMe sidebar which is using IMAP.
Now I have a few dozen folders inside my MobileMe IMAP account and consequently it is a bit chaotic when I check my mail. The activity window goes on for quite awhile syncing, checking and copying my mail.
I guess what I am curious about it the following:
Is there a limit to how many folders and subfolders I should use in MobileMe IMAP? What I mean by limit is, what is too much?
I have my GMAIL account setup as well through MobileMe. It seems a lot of time is spent syncing between my MobileMe and GMAIL, what is the best setup for this? By best I mean, the most economical setup between GMAIL and MobileMe to ensure redundant copies and synced mail boxes?
In Apple Mail I have certain folder that now have duplicate sub folders, where one has the suffix (messages). What is the difference and what should I do to get rid of these duplicate subfolders? In other words, inside Apple Mail I have a folder called "Business" inside that are a number of subfolders, many of the are duplicated one being called "Business GTD" and the next "Business GTD (messages)"

IMAP, IMAP .. fun stuff hey!
OK .. since your running IMAP you MUST be checking mail at various locations (remote or not). You could be using various computer to check IMAP mail also. OK .. step one ... IMAP is not a protocol
used or intended for a client mail application to be running at multiple locations simultaneously,
which is the MAJOR drawback versus a regular POP mail account. Make sure ALL other mail clients
are QUIT and config'ed properly at each location. You can and should only use one open client at each location each time. IF more than one mail client is running you will get these PROBLEMS all the time!!! See each open client wants to load (populate) ALL the IMAP info at one time once its running. IF setting's not correct two open mail clients will fight and clash to download your mail

Special Batch Rename; remove trailing characters and make sequential

Hello,
I'm looking to make an Automator droplet which
Accepts a handful of files
Removes the last three characters while preserving the extension
Applies a trailing set of numbers to make the files sequential
In my googling, I have found several workflows that come close, but none which does all three. Here are a few:

Something may have changed since it was written, so I guess it’s time for an update.
Ah I see; thanks for looking into it.
The solution would be to change the original script to one that strips the text and renames each item one at a time.
I feared as much. Sadly, this is beyond my Applescript knowledge. While I might be able to retrofit an ugly python script, I was hoping for the connivence and transparency of Automator.
Will the sequence be set to a specific starting value, or are you looking at adding the next available number?
Personally, I just need the sequence to start at 001.
Granted, my “ultimate” script would take an entire folder, parse out each unique instance of COMPANY_YEAR and rename the groups individually. The sequential renaming would dedifferentiate between Medicare_2008, Medicare_2007, and Regence_2008.

Issue with Cloudstation deleting and modifying folders and files

My office has 15 people who use laptops in the office. In the office we have one network share on the NAS (DS415+) which all users are mapped to. We have one folder (CUSTOMERS) which has 1000s of subfolders all named after our customers. Each customer folder typically has several jpg files. This CUSTOMERS folder is what we sync via cloud station. So on each users laptop, at the root of C:\ we each have a folder called CLOUDSTATION. In the office, employees are directed to use the network share. Out of the office, they are directed to use the Cloud Station folder.My understanding is any change made within folder CUSTOMERS is replicated across the network to our NAS. If someone is working out of the office but on wifi, we should see those changes at some point. If the person is not on wifi, the next time they connect to wifi...any...

Also: Are you aware that the latest version of Photoshop is not "CC" but CC2014v14.2.2 ?

Why is mail saving sometimes dozens of versions of emails in trash and saved folders and how to fix it

Since updating to X have been having problem with sometimes dozens of emails being saved (depending how long I take to write an email) in saved and trash... Not sure why this is happening or how to fix it. Any ideas?

Folders and images change when hard drive disconnected

I have no problem importing images. From CD's, when the CD is removed the file folder and images stay there with reference to the original location.
However, I have several hard drives and when I import files and folders from one of them and then disconnect it, Lightroom renames all the folders and changes the images--What is causing this?????

Yes, the images stay on the external drive as I don't move them upon import. I have 5 external Hard Drives and my problem is with the two larger ones, both Firewire 800 if that matters. In any case, the files imported from the non 800 drives do not have any problems. They are noted as not being on-line when I disconnect the drive, but thumbnails, location and file naming are all the same. With the 800 drives, the images corrupt AND change name. A few will still show a path to the original, but the folder they are in has nothing to do with where they came from.

Disappearing files and/or folders ?

I'm experiencing files and/or folders disappearing from within other folders under Lion 10.7.2
This is an intermittent problem. It usually happens mostly from dragging and dropping file('s) and/or folder('s) into antother folder within Finder windows from doing thinds like general tidying-up and file/folder maintenance.
The files/folders appear to still be there and I have often confirmed this by running other programs that allow you to view files locations by right clicking and choosing 'reveal in finder'. Usually shuting down and booting back up often resolves the problem and the files/folders become visible again, but this is something I'd prefer not to do.
The problem does appear to become more frequent in time and I don't recall this problem under Snow Leopard. It can affect one or more folders.
I've naturally verified the disk and have run 'repair disk permission' more times than I can remember. Just hope it's not a B-Tree structure problem or anything becoming more serious.

I am getting this too. So far it has always gone away when I restart.
I'm starting to think that Lion needs to be restarted quite often, at least daily.
Grrr.

Can I arrange my bookmarks so that the folders and sub-folders are at the top of the list like in Explorer?

I transferred all of my "Favorites" from Explorer. I have a lot of folders and sub-folders and I would like these to be listed at the top (as in Explorer) with individual bookmarks below. Right now the folders and individual bookmarks are mixed together.

If you '''Sort by Name''' in the Bookmarks Sidebar, that is how Firefox sorts bookmarks. If you have any '''''Separators''''', the Sort will stop there and you'll have to Sort from there down separately.

Applications showing up as folders and cannot be launched

I have a set of applications that no longer show up as icons now that I have installed snow leopard. the applicaitons show up as folders and not icons for applications. This did not happen in Leopard, but now that I have a new computer(s) in snow leopard it is happening.
Anyone else have this problem?

I fixed the problem by copying the applications from the server while on a Tiger machine and then taking the copy to the SL machine and placing in a new folder on the server. The applications came up as application icons and not folders and are running okay on leopard.
The original applications on the server are still showing as folders under snow leopard, however they are applications under leopard and tiger as they should be. Very puzzling but with a little ingenuity I have working for now.
Maybe someone can explain what is happening of the developer will come up with an answer. I have not told them my solution yet.

I just updated to the new pages and keynote and all my folders have disappeared from both apps! I do all my note-taking for my law degree on my iPad so I REALLY need to get those documents back on here...
They were all backed up on iCloud so I should still have access to them. Has anyone found a fix for this?

Well I seem to have inadvertently fixed it! I turned off my iPad, and opened iCloud on my computer - thankfully all my folders were still there so I downloaded anything I couldn't afford to lose. Then I closed iCloud, turned my iPad back on, and when I opened pages and keynote they synced with iCloud and the folders and the files in them are all back.

Working with Folders and Sub-Folders

I'm updating this big site, and its pages are organized into
folders. I've only ever organized my images and .pdf files with
folders not my html files but all my prior sites have never had so
many files as this one. It’s starting to drive me crazy
though because pages in folders aren't connecting to scripts in the
scripts folder, menus aren't working right because of it and I'm
not sure what I can do to fix it.
My question is if images are showing up in these sub-pages,
the linked css is being applied in these sub-pages why are the
scripts not working in the sub-pages? For example, all the top
level pages easily connect to the rotating JavaScript banner, but
as soon as you go into a sub-folder page the banner disappears. All
these files are being updated via templates so any changes I'm
doing is affecting all the pages the same. That’s why
it’s confusing me why an image would connect the same but a
script wouldn't. Don't they search for their links root down or
does it search the folder its in down? How can you get templates to
work under such conditions where files are both in the root and in
folders and sub-folders?

What's in folders and what's not?

I recently updated to 5.1.1 from 4 something. It made a mess of my apps and folders. On the left is a list of apps with checkboxes to check whether or not to put it on the iPhone and on the right is a display of all the homepages and where folders and apps are located on them. As I move apps into folders they go into them. But looking at the list on the left I can't tell which apps have been put into folders or not. Or is there a way to tell?

I always just did it on my phone and transferred purchases. I always make purchases on my phone and transfer purchases to my Mac. Never kept the apps organized on the Mac. I always figured that since the connection between iTunes and iPhone is one way that if I organized the iPhone and the sync'd with the disorganized iTunes that it would disorganize my iPhone.
