Batch rename files preserving the original file name in metadata

How can I batch rename files while preserving the original file name in metadata? (Don't want the old file name as part of the new file name)
(Adobe CS Bridge can do this with some success, but I don't want to be dependant on this software. Results are inconsistent.)

With a simple terminal script. More details needed, though.

  • Itunes can't play the file because the original file can not be found

There is many things wrong with that message and I don't know why.
I had around 30 songs off an album on my computer
I put the album on Itunes
I edited them and then they played fine
I put them on my ipod and then deleted them off coz i wanted to put something else on
but i found out I had more space to put the other 30 songs I had from before back on so I went to the album
when I wanted to play a song it said "Itunes Can't play the file because the original file can not be found"
    1) The original file was on my computer, in the exact place where I left it last time when Itunes played it
    2) I did not change the file path name
    3) I did not change the folder path name
    4) The songs aren't corrupted
    5) They play fine on other programs
I deleted them all off and took them on again and they played fine but whey did they keep stuffing up before?

The "missing file" thing happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then say no when asked to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions. I can provide a step by step guide if you give me the two paths.
In some cases iTunes may be able to repair itself if you go through the same steps and locate the lost track. It may then offer to attempt to automatically fix other broken links. Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes.

  • Is there a way to restore missing lightroom files without the original files?

I am currently trying to reedit some old work, unfortunately, I lost the memory card with all the original files, is there a way I can restore the files in LR without the originals? I figure since the program still has some of the data and can show us a preview of the images, there should be a way around this.

I assume you copied the original memory card files to HDD during import into LR. Did you later move the files or the containing folder to another location from outside LR and now they are missing?

  • Adding chapters while preserving the original file size and type.

Gone are the days of easily adding chaps in FCP7.  FCPX is here… chapters are gone!.  Now enter Compressor 4.
When exporting from Compressor am I ultimately going to end up with an additional file with new settings?
I have followed the Compressor manual and understand that I can “Create a new batch from template” and am supposed to choose Create DVD.  I however just want to keep my file in its original maximum resolution while gaining the chapter marks that will be recognized in iDVD or Studio Pro.
Can anybody offer me some advice or point me to some good resources?

Assume you're referring to Compressor 4, although the following would pretty much also apply to earlier versions.
Yes; you will have an additional file with chapter markers.
Select a preset…you can start with any of them, but Pro Res 422 makes the most sense.
If your source file (the exported Quick Time file) was PR 422, it will not change the scale and will preserve the quality of your original file (or close enough so you wouldn't be able to see the difference even with a blown up projected image). If, for some reason you a codec other than Pro Res, go to the Inspector>Encoder pane>Video Settings>Compression Settings and make your choice.
In the Preview window, set the chapter markers, which are frame-accurate in an I Frame format like Pro Res.
Submit and Compressor will spit out a high quality QT movie. You can then bring that movie into iDVD, which will recognize your markers.
If you want to use DVDSP, you have two options. 1) You can let DVDSP do the encoding by importing the QT movie with chapters. 2) You can use Compressor to encode; you choose the DVD preset (Disk Burning) and it creates separate audio and video files that you then bring into DVDSP, which will "see" your markers in these files. Most DVDSP users use the second method because they have far greater control over the compression settings…but that presumes the user is relatively familiar with Compressor and Frame Controls.
Finally, bear in mind that DVDs are standard definition, so – however you get there – the DVD will be much more compressed and much smaller resolution than any High Def format. However, the DVD end product can still look very good. Do some tests with small, but representative sections of your movie to see whether iDVD or DVDSP works best for you.
    Good luck.

  • How to send 0-bit confirmation file after the original file upload finished

    Hi All,
We are using Receiver FTP adapter (FTPS, FTP over SSL) to send/upload a Idoc file to external partner FTP server.
Along with the IDOC file to be uploaded, and as soon as the IDOC file upload is finished, we will need to upload a 0-bit "confirmation file", thus indicating that the (main) file upload has finished.
For example, if the IDOC file is named        example.idoc
the confirmation file has to be named        example.idoc.cnf
We are thinking to use "Run Operating System Command After Message Processing". Can someone give us more information if we can use this? if so what would be the command line??
    Thx
    N@v!n

    Hi,
ok - to this solution: if you want to use (it would be possible), you must create repository objects for this (flagfile) and also directory objects.
    but other solutions:
a, you can create a script in target system and call this script from the adapter (which would create a file)
b, I'm not sure if there is a command for creating a file, but there is defe=inetely one for copying it. So what about storing some ampty file in location /template/ for example and call cp command from the adapter? and you would place this copy to required location

  • I need to reinstall but I don't know how to put the file in the original files place. I am so confused!

I am trying to reinstall cs3 But the download instructions say:  "Before you begin additional installations or reinstallations, please make sure the installer is in the same location or drive it was during the original installation."  But that program is not even in my computer anymore. so how am I supposted to do that?

Many thanks diesel.  I cannot remember ever having an administrator password. Looks like I shall have to do a restore on my PC and not bother with the updates.  Or maybe I could find my password from somewhere ? When I went into control panel I found a box with administrator and my name and it said password protected so I must have had one at some time. Any ideas on how I could find it ? Many thanks anyway. I always use a password to sign on but obviously that is not it.  Eileen

  • I have just launched icloud on my windows 7 laptop, and stupidly added my outlook email contacts - ie addresses to my icloud contacts. So, there are now 1000's of contacts.  How do I delete these and preserve the original telephone and address contacts,?

I have just launched icloud on my windows 7 laptop, and stupidly followed the instructions and added my outlook email contacts which come up as email addresses to my whole icloud contacts. So, there are now 1000's of contacts which have now appeared on my iphone.
How do I delete these email addresses and preserve the original straightforward names with telephone and address contacts?  I am not very technical and am frustrated in my attempts to rectify the situation.
    Thanks

For your contacts go to settings on your phone - mail contacts and calendars - scroll down to contacts and change display order to the one you want ( you can also change sort order, but ususally people prefer last name first and see if that is what you have).
For your yahoo emails go on your computer open outlook
In Outlook 2010, choose File > Accounts.
Click account settings and confirm the command by clicking "Add and remove accounts or change existing connection settings."
    Select account and click "Change."
    Click "Advanced."
    Click "More Settings."
    Click the "Advanced" tab.
Enter "7" in the box to the right of "Remove from server after."
    Click OK.
    Close Account Settings.
    If you have outlook 2007
In Outlook 2007, choose Tools > Account Settings.
Click the account you wish to edit and then click Change.
    Click the "More Settings" button.
Select the Advanced tab located across the top of the window.
Select the "Leave a copy of messages on the server" option.
Select the "Remove from server after" option.
Enter 7 in the box to the right of "Remove from server after."
    Click OK.
    Close Account Settings.

  • Can I create action to Save As...  and change only one character of the original file name?

I'm working on a group of  files(25-28) at a time. I have to save each one as a photoshop .raw file and change the first character of the file name. the rest of the file name must remain the same. I then close the original file with no changes. I tried to create an action for this. The only problem is that the next file overwrote the file I used to create the action.  Is it possible to creat an action to save as... and keep the file name of the new file but chage the first character to the same one used in the recording?

    Good day!
I think what you are describing is not possible with Actions.
Scripting would be an option, but more convenient might be simply saving the files with unchanged names and then edit the names of  the whole bunch in Bridge in one go (Tools > Batch Rename).

  • ITunes will no longer play my music, all the albumss are there but it if I click on a song to play it I get a message saying " The song (name of song) could not be played because the original file coul not be found. Would you like to locate it."

iTunes will no longer play my music, all the albumss are there but it if I click on a song to play it I get a message saying " The song (name of song) could not be played because the original file coul not be found. Would you like to locate it."

You get this message because  iTunes can’t find the file. This can happen for a number of reasons:
The song file or a folder in its path was renamed
The song file or the folder it is in has been moved
The song file has been deleted
The device containing the song files e.g. external drive is not accessible or the drive letter has changed.
Do any of these aply to you?

  • I renamed songs in playlist but the original files aren't renamed. How can I sort out the originals?

I could really use some help. I'm trying to record an audio book of my second novel. I had about 300 audio tracks from recording the book in iTunes. I put them all in a playlist. Then I went through and delected the tracks that were no good from the Playlist and renamed the others so they were properly sorted by page number.
Unfortunately, I did not realize that 1) renaming tracks in a Playlist does not rename the actual original tracks, and 2) when I click "Show in Windows Explorer" not only is it the original file names, but they are mixed in with all the other tracks that I had deleted from the playlist.
Is there any way for me to isolate the tracks that are in the Playlist? I need to pull all those tracks out so I can import them into a music editing software program. I'm worried that all my time was wasted renaming the songs and now I can't figure out any way to group those tracks to import into another program.
Any advice would be much appreciated!
    Thank you.

When you look at your iPhone, are you looking in the Music app or in the iTunes app?  Be sure you are looking in the Music app, and look in the Songs category.  If your songs are not here, you may want to try syncing your information again through iTunes.  To do this, uncheck "Sync Music" and then click apply or sync in the bottom right corner of iTunes, and then recheck "Sync Music" and then click apply or sync again.
    I hope this helps!

  • How to name individual clips without changing the name of the original file...?

    Hi,
Theres likely to be a really simple solution to this, but i can't find it! I've done my in & out points, i've created a new clip and i'd like to give it a unique name. When i rename the clip the original file name also changes. How can i rename the new clip without changing the original file name?
    Please help,
    Thanks

Either make the clip a subclip or convert it to a new master clip. Both can be done in the Modify menu.

  • Easy Way To Change The Original File Name??

I store all my music and videos on iTunes. I just got a AT&T Tilt and I have to use WMP to sync to it. I can't drag and drop iTunes playlists into my media card cause my Tilt uses Windows.
My main problem with WMP is even though I edit the song/video name, it still syncs over the original file name. If I change the original file name for WMP then I have to rename it for iTunes cause when I go back to iTunes to play the song/video, it says the file is missing. It's a pain
For example, in my iTunes music foler in My Music, I have a song file named Britney_Pieceofme.mp3. I edit the name of the song and artist to Britney Spears Piece Of Me but when I sync it to my phone, the original file name appears.
    Thanks!

I think you may need to "look" into the song to see what information is contained in the mp3 tag. WMP automatically sees that information and will store the song at the name in the tag. To solve your problem, you will need an mp3 tag editor (google search) where you can change the tags on your songs, then put them on your Tilt. I think/hope this solves your problem.

  • Renaming a jpeg, changing the original file?

I belived that LR5 was a non-destructive program. I have been told repetadly that all information was stored in the catalog and the original files are safe.
However when I now renamed my old jpeg-files from within LR5, I found that the original filenames was changed by LR5!
    1) Does the renaming process only save the new filename (EXIF/metadata) in the original file or are the full image saved?
My concern is since jpeg is destructive format I will loss a generation and I may end up having a result I do not want.
    2) Anyone know a good relable source to some facts about how EXIF information and metadata are actually handled?
    Looking forward to your feed-back.

biggles-2 wrote:...  LR5 never touches the originals
    This is an incorrect statement
it is true that Lightroom never touches the image portion of the original jpg file. However, there are many other ways in which Lightroom can modify the original jpg file, just not the image portion.
To me changing name from for example IMG957 to 201403_K5II_0957, will give me advantages within LR5 and LR5 saves the information in the catalogue and nowhere else.
If Lightroom thinks the name is 201403_K5II_0957 and your operating system thinks the name is IMG957, then Lightroom will not be able to find the file, and thus will not be able to perform any operations on this file. So it gives you no advantages whatsoever, in fact it make Lightroom useless on this file.
I would also suggest/recommend that you organize via keywords and other metadata, rather than use file names as a place to store metadata like K5II, whatever that is. There are many reasons for this, but quickly, this is the strength of Lightroom, and the weakness of file names and operating system constructs, in my opinion.

  • Mp3 will not rename - reverts back to original file name. Any suggestions?

I have a bunch of mp3 files that I would like to rename the original file name. Itunes only allows me to change metadata, but to fix broken names and keep organized, I need to change the file name.  Once I rename the file, it shows the new name, and then upon playing it, it reverts back to the original name. I do not have any locked permissions. I have parallels and tried to rename them on the windows 7 side but same effect.  I tried to shut all programs off so the file was not in use. I even tried to export it as a acc file type.  I am exhausted looking for a solution, this is why I am using this forum as a last ditch effort. Please help.

As far as I am aware, iTunes does not rename files (at least nto my older version I use).  Yes, it will insist upon the files being in certain folders which is structured from the metadata, but the files themselves keeep whatever name you use.
I suggest this be moved to an iTunes forum (you choose for Mac or for Windows).  I have never seen anybody else complain about this in the past.
One question, do you subscribe to Match?  Is there anything else using these files, some third party software?

  • Uploaded home movies revert to the original file name when added to iTunes?

I have Home Video files that I have renamed from the original file names.  When I add these files to iTunes, the files revert to the original file name at the time the file was created.  How can I add these files to iTunes with the new file name without having to rename every Home Movie that has been added?

OK I have done some more work and think i have the issue resolved. The problem lies with file formats specifically .mp4 and .m4v
I suspect the files you are importing are mp4 files. When I do this i get the same behaviour of file names changing their name after playback. When i convert my files to m4v format and import the issue disappears.
