Batch renaming extensions: .html to: .shtml

I am trying to rename a bunch of html files to have a shtml extension without individually renaming. I thought there might be a batch function for this. Curious.

I did not know that I could adjust the server to include into .html without changing extensions to .shtml.
Whoever controls the server must tweak the server to allow this. Many hosts already have their servers set like this by default.
But now that I've changed fifty files to .shtml, would it be better to rename them back to .html after that adjustment and if so then perhaps  first question stands?
If you've already changed them then leave them as .shtml.
Can't help you with Mac software though. I'm on Windows 7.
There's no bulk/batch renaming feature in DW though.

  • Adobe Bridge CC Batch Rename and File Extensions

I use Adobe Bridge CC on my macbook pro that is running OS X 10.8.5  When I batch rename files within Bridge it automatically drops the file extension. I am able to add the extension within the naming process but would prefer if it simply defaulted to the existing extension of the files being renamed. On occasion it does do this and then the next time it is gone. What am I doing wrong?

I don't think there is any way in which you can add to the built-in functions…
Unless this is actually provided by one of the Adobe start-up scripts… ( I've not see it when digging about )
You would probably need a scripted solution that can give you drop down menu of the extra options you want.

  • Batch Rename with additional "."s, drops the file extension. Request for "Keep File Extension" option...

I NEVER name files with extra "." s in the name. I realize that all OS's (even Windows) will recognize it, but I haven't gotten out the old mindset of 8.3 filenaming... Although I do use longer names. So... I was surprised to see that when I was renaming files as per a clients naming preference to add a period within the name, the file extension is removed.
    For example:
original file -  2014_10_31_1643.CR2   when batch renaming to "2014.31" + sequence, drops the "CR2" extension.
but.... if I change it to "2014_31" + sequence, the ".CR2" remains
Since adding multiple "." is a legitimate naming convention, shouldn't the file extension remain?  Or, possibly this could be made more flexible by adding a check box "Keep file extension"
    just a thought.

    Refer to this stackexchange article:
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/47319/how-can-i-make-os-x-recognize-new -file-extensions
The finder will only select the filename only for "known" file types.

  • Bridge removing file extension after batch rename

    Hi All,
I've been having trouble with what appears to be a problem with Bridge in Photoshop CS2. I'm well aware this is an older version but, in this case, I don't think that should matter. Here is my situation:
After batch renaming jpeg files, I've had a problem with Bridge simply stripping off the file extension on all the newly renamed files. This never happens right away...always later. In other words, I'll batch rename a folder full of photos without issue, note that the rename was successful, and then return to that same folder a short time later to find white thumbnails and missing file extensions. This has happened exactly the same way on two different computers - and always with the delay.
This is getting to be very annoying. Has anyone had or heard of a similar issue? Thanks very much...

First use the menu tools / cache / purge cache for folder, if still in trouble restart Bridge holding down option key to refresh preferences

  • Batch rename won't keep the extension on some files only

I have all my shrunk (resized to smaller for web) files in a sub folder. I got the idea here somewhere to rename such files by adding " _sm " this way being able to distinguish from the two when doing a search. In batch renaming something strange happened:some files did not keep their extension. How could this be and why? There was also no undo (Why?) so i decided to rename them once again this time replacing the "_sm" with ".jpg" in order to fool Bridge and place the files back to their original names and extensions.
Anyhow is there a reason why it would not keep the extension on some files while keep it on others? Since it's doing this in batch, therefore processing many files at once there's gotta be a reason why it would not treat all files as equals and I'm thinking that perhaps it has something to do with how I name my files.
    Thank you

If you select the opion to preserve the previous file name when batch renaming in Bridge then it's easy to revert… The old name will be stored in the files meta data…
If you have renamed the files again then I think this will have been overwritten… I think the property is name string and NOT array of name strings…

  • Batch renaming files and extensions?

Can someone tell me how I can do this? I have never used terminal or automator before, so I'm not sure how to go about it.
    Thanks for any help.

There are utilities out there that do batch renaming. Try searching VersionTracker.com and MacUpdate.com
Next is a question of what you want to rename, and what you want to rename it to. That affects the code.
If you are going the Unix shell scripting route, you have to be careful about spaces in names, as Unix commands are parse on white space boundaries, and so a file name with a space in it may look like 2 files, neither of which exsits. So quotes are needed to prevent that.
Automator and Applescript are uses to spaces in filenames, you just have to master their usage. There are actual forums for Applescript
    <http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=724>
    and Automator
    <http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1261>,
    which might be more helpful.

  • Can't Use Batch Rename "Rename In Same Folder" for some photos

Have a strange problem: when using "Batch Rename…" under the "Tools" menu, "Rename In Same Folder" is unusable for some photos taken with some cameras, not for others. For one example, I shift-selected a range of photos taken at a recent vacation, some with my iPhone, some with my girlfriend's Canon PowerShot SD450. Bridge renamed the iPhone photos, but not Canon photos. For another example, if I select a single photo taken by her cell phone or Canon camera, "Rename In Same Folder" is grayed-out; if I select a single photo taken my by iPhone, not so. Does anyone understand this behavior, and is there a solution?

Bridge Support Center in the help menu leads to a 404 error page.
Sadly enough this is also on my system (Mac OSX 10.6.8) It should not be showing 404 but it is there...
What Bridge help files and links, forums, communities, google searches do not do is tell you how to fix what happens with the problem
In general restarting Bridge holding down option key (in your case alt key) to choose reset preferences solves most problems.
Here is a page from Adobe Support about Troubleshooting (although this states you should combine option/alt with cmd/ctrl but that is not needed)
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/317/317912.html
I want to use Bridge batch rename to change jpegs into Mac PC compatible jpegs.
Although I have the option for compatibility with Unix and Windows checked in my customized presets I'm not really aware of the need for that. If you have a .JPG or .jpg extension as the extension a Mac reeds and opens the file without problems. I am aware that as a Mac user I had the need to take care of Windows files in the past. Before OSX a Mac did not need an extension to recognize and open a file. Since OSX is Unix based the need to use an extension is there and also you should only use one dot (.) in the filename and that is before the extension at the end of the filename. Using spaces, commas etc is possible but not prefered. In basic, keep it simple (and short) and the file will open on all systems without problems.
When you select a preset, the rename and preview buttons grey out. So I start all over...clear cache, check file permissions, restart/shutdown, etc
That should not happen, presets and batch rename should be always available, even if you have only one file selected. You should start with the refreshing of the preferences. Deleting caches and checking file permissions are not needed every time for clearing prefs (although it is wise to maintain your system on a regular basis, but that is good for the use of all apps).
On a Mac the user defined Batch Rename settings are saved in the user library / application support / Adobe/ Bridge CS5 / Batch rename setting. (not a single clue how that translate to windows but I have no reason to believe that such a file should not be present on your system.)
Enter the term "batch rename" in the windows Bridge forum search and I got....ZERO results.
Well, again a disappointment, there will be many result available in both Windows and Mac forum but it sure is not easy to find them
The forum search option is next to useless. I believe you should try to switch to the main forum page or something, I once had a result but after so many tries I forgot how I managed this (combined with getting angrier every try...)
I could really use some help because there is no way I can convert the number of files I have to make them compatible in MACs
As stated before, if the are .jpg they are already compatible
it used to be in CS 3 and 4 but since I "upgraded" to Production Premium suite 5.5 none of the version work.
If you keep having problems you might consider the clean tool option to clear PSCS 3 and 4. Check also this KB article:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html
It should be possible to use all CS versions on your system but you can have only one version of Bridge active at the time. Upgrading from a single CS to a Suite should also be possible without problems but sadly enough everything that should be possible without problems is often only happening in the ideal world...

  • Batch Rename and Restructure Folders and Pictures within

Hello, I have been messing around with Automator trying to get Automator to batch rename my pictures. It seems that Automator is a little limited in renaming the way I would like to.
I would like to rename all of my pictures to have a folder structure (I don't believe Automator can do this part for me) of:
    "Pictures/Nikon Transfer 2/Date Taken yyyy - dd- mm/DSC_xxxx"
Currently, after trying one of the programs out, I have altered the filename over several of them to a mess of something like "2012-01-24-DSC_0295.JPG.JPG" where the folder structure  I was trying to achieve was put into the filename and the extension was added into the filename.
I have tried several programs (freeware and open source) to achieve this to no avail. I would like to stay away from trail software and paid software.  If anyone knows of any Automator tricks or other free, non-trial programs that can do such a thing please let me know! It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much for any feedback! PSkilton

There are several renamers on the appstore. I use one that is called "A Better Finder Rename", which for me is very good: you find the download button here:

  • Batch rename files

How can I batch rename files to original (embedded in metadata) file names?

If you are saying that your photos have their original filename stored as the DocumentName field in the EXIF metadata, you can use the free ExifToolGUI:
    http://www.softpedia.com/get/PORTABLE-SOFTWARE/Multimedia/Graphics/Portable-ExifToolGUI.sh tml
    It requires the free ExifTool:
    http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/ExifTool-Download-90656.html
ExifToolGUI allows you to rename files using that DocumentName field -- just be sure the extension is included.
    Added:
I just installed those latest versions, and there isn't the file renaming option any more.
Can probably be done by setting up an ExifTool commandline, but I haven't experimented with that yet.

  • Adobe Bridge Batch Rename Stopped Working

ive been using bridge exclusively to rename/
organize my files and today for some odd reason it just will not work. i select the files i wish to rename and then select batch rename and name/numer the files as ive always done before and when i click rename nothing happens at all. i cleared out my cache to no avail and im now officially stumped. any help is appreciated. thanks!

Your problem does seem odd.  Difficult to troubleshoot by remote, so run a few tests and see if you can narrow the problem down.
By any chance are you trying a batch re-name of files on an external drive?  If so may be permissioning problem.
Do you have this problem in all folders or just one?  If one there may be a contaminated file or name (i.e. flower.jpeg.jpeg)
To avoid fouling up your files copy a dozen or so and put in "test"  folder then run these tests.
Can you do a simple rename of one file?
Can you do a batch rename of one file?
If the above is true can you do batch rename for all files in this folder?
If so does the extension make any difference - jpeg, psd, etc.?

Are you referring to the 3-letter ".jpg" extension being deleted?  You can't do that, of course!  If that is still the case, you'll have to add it manually to each JPEG file.

  • I need to batch rename and relink files in indesign

I have a whole bunch of files that I need to rename ( I need to add a prefix on to the front eg. a whole group of files called "plan.jpg" 01.jpg, 02.jpg, etc... need to now read ORD_plan.jpg, ORD_01.jpg, etc...) I can batch rename the files in adobe bridge, but I have to go in one by one and re-connect the links. Is there a script which can batch rename and relink all the files?
    Thanks!

This biterscripting script may possibly help. It takes two input arguments.
directory - directory under which the .jpg files are located
prefix - prefix which will be added to each file's name
    # Script RenameJpg.txt
var str directory, prefix, list, filepath, name
    cd $directory
    find -n "*.jpg" > $list
    while ($list <> "")
    do
        lex "1" $list > $filepath ; stex -p "^/^l[" $filepath > $name
        set $name = $prefix+$name
        system copy ("\""+$filepath+"\"") ("\""+$name+"\"")
    done
This is the way you would use it - copy and paste the script code into file C:/Scripts/RenameJpg.txt, then enter this command into biterscripting.
    script "C:/Scripts/RenameJpg.txt" directory("C:/test") prefix("ORD_")
It will rename C:/test/plan.jpg to C:/test/ORD_plan.jpg, C:/test/01.jpg to C:/test/ORD_01.jpg, etc.
Important: I am using the 'system copy' command so that files are copied instead of renamed. Once you are happy with the test, you can change that command to 'system rename'.
Also, if the .jpg files are within subfolders of C:/test, change the 'find -n' to 'find -r -n'. -r means recursive = search in subfolders. Syntax for the find command at http://www.biterscripting.com/helppages/lf.html

  • TextEdit won't let me rename duplicated .html files as a .html file (manually typing it) either in the Finder or the Title Bar by selecting Rename or Save.

TextEdit won't let me rename duplicated .html files as a .html file (manually typing it) either in the Finder or the Title Bar by selecting Rename or Save.
I am only able to rename a duplicated .html file right after I create it, because the file name gets highlighted in the Title Bar, but after that there is no recourse. I I can Rename or Save the file if I want to just save it as a .txt, but I need it to be .html. I guess I can manually change the file later, but it's really annoying.

I remember long ago a similar issue with TextEdit, but I can't remember if there was a solution or not.
Do you have it set to Display HTML files as HTML code and also deselect "When Saving a File: Add ".txt" extension to plain text files"

I can only provide you with the path for a Mac but Windows should be something similar
User library (By default hidden per OSX7, use menu go with option to reveal)/ Application Support / Adobe / Bridge CSxx / Batch Rename Settings. Inhere are the saved files with the extension '.setting'

  • Batch Rename PSD Layers to File Name Script?

    Hello,
I just recieved several thousand .PSD files for a job containing a single layer (named "Layer 1") on a transparent background. I'm trying to find a way to batch rename the layer in each of these files as the file name, sans the file extension. Is there a script out there that can do this for me? Forgive me, I am not too hip with scripts.
    Windows 7 PC, CS6
    Thank you!

Save the line below into a plain text file and give it the .jsx extension.
    app.activeDocument.activeLayer.name = decodeURI(app.activeDocument.name).match(/(.*)(\.[^\.]+)/)[1];
Then create an action that runs that script. Then run File-Automate-Batch using that action.
