Batterie/power cord question

I got the new MacBook Pro 17" and got a question about batterie/power cord use.
I always use mine at home and almost never bring it anywhere. So is it best to
keep the power cord in all the time? Or take it out when its fully charge then run
on batteries plug it in again when the batteries almost dead and so on?
Thanks

It would be better to leave the cord in, but only run down the battery all the way about once a month or so. It would be worse to run the battery down multiple times a week.
Try to keep the machine cool, since heat can really kill a battery.
A good essay on keeping battery life long is here.

  • Power Cord Question

    Just had my power cord replaced under warranty (with 2 days to spare!). Basically the cord was to the point that it would rotate 180 degrees by the time that I took it in. It took forever to charge and you would have to plug it in *just so* to get it finally start to charge.
    The location of the cord is problematic- I would sometimes turn the cord so it strung upward (across the back of the laptop) so it wouldn't cover the USB ports when I'm using them.
    So my question is, can the cord be plugged in facing either way, or is it possible that this is the reason the cord broke originally?

    So to clarify, they are meant to run around the back (ie strung behind the laptop around the side with the pretty lighted apple when the laptop is open?
    It just got me thinking what direction these cords were made to run so I can put as little stress on the thing as I can.

  • Moving Abroad - Power cord question

    Hi,
    I have recently moved to Spain and my lovely iMac arrived shortly after me yesterday.
    And to be honest I've just realised that it won't be as simple as just changing the plug to use power outlets here.
    What is my best course of action? Is it OK to continue using an adaptor? Or should I look into a new power cord that can be used here? I'm guessing I can remove the cord easily? If so can you point me in the right direction, I've tried looking on the apple store site for Spain but I can't find anything.
    Muchas Gracias :0)

    Modern Mac computers are equiped to handle a range of voltages, 100-240 v, and a range of frequencies, 50-60 Hz. All that is necessary is to be able to either use an adapter for the US plug for the European/other country socket, or replace the power cord. If staying for a period of time, the most elegant approach is to buy a new power cord with the correct plug. If your iMac has a detachable cord, try an Apple store and see if they have a cord they will sell you. The Apple retail stores can be found by going to the Store item in the upper bar on this page, or a specific product and then Locate Retail Store.
    There is a store in Barcelona and a store in Madrid.
    Hope this helps, and enjoy your stay in Spain.

  • Audigy 2 Platinum EX Power Cord Question, pls he

    I have an Audigy 2 Platinum EX with the external I/O box. I switched the room's my computers were in a while back, so I switched soundcard's to keep the I/O Box and surround sound speakers in the same room. Apparently When I switched them I did not hook up the power cord to the Audigy 2 card, and I can not find it. Is there anyplace I can get a replacement cord at? I have several brand new cord's that has Molex (power supply type end to hard dri've and cd dri'ves) on one end, and a smaller 4 pin's on the other that fit's onto the power port on the Audigy 2, is that the same type of cord or would that work? Thanks!

    any FDD type power plug should work

  • How can I cancel my contract with Verizon without any fees because Verizon has failed to provide me with a workable phone for over 2 months despite many hours talking to tech support and several replacement phones, batteries, power cord, and sim card etc

    How can I contact a representative of Verizon to help me cancel my contract so I can switch carriers to get a phone that is reliable and a Co. that supports its products?  Verizon seems to have many blocking scripts or dead ends when trying tio contact someone  who can help the customer. How can I get around the blocks and get to someone who can directly answer my questions? I have one of those "hot" phones that were recently seen on the news, yet no one seems to be able to help me resolve the issue. I have no idea where this comment goes, or who reads it?
    Jim R

    The phone is your responsibility, if it's before the 1 year warranty you can get defects fixed by the Manufacturer  of the phone. If you want to leave pay your termination fee, or find a carrier who claims they will do it but don't really expect it to happen either.

  • Giving 60 gig iPod to someone. Power cord question.

    Hey,
    I have a 60 gig ipod that I am giving away to someone. Does anyone know if this will work for it? http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB352LL/B?fnode=MTY1NDA4NA&mco=MTY1OTg1Nw
    Also, is this http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA591G/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0OQ&mco=MzE3MDIxMg included in the previous link?
    Right now the person I am giving it to, they dont have any Apple devices. It would be their first iPod and want to make sure I am giving them everything they need.

    Yes and No. You'll have to buy both of them.

  • Power Cord slightly Broken...Replacement Question/Ideas

    Hello again everyone...
    I have a question about the power cord on my 17" Powerbook G4.
    I went to charge it up yesterday and the cord, while still attatched to the plug-in, is really only hanging on by wires.
    I unplugged it from the computer and am still thinking about getting a replacement, even tho the Apple adaptor through the store is very low rated. I kinda don't want to buy a third party one but will if i have to.
    I guess I am wondering if the power adaptor to my 2001 15" Powerbook Aluminum G4 would work on this here laptop.
    I have the power cord with the round wrap around and I have two for my non-functioning second laptop.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Yep. Getting this error message again, looks like I have to get my 3rd cable. The cord becomes twisted, the connection at the very end bulges out (see below of my cable)
    My first cable (connected to my Mac) was giving me the following error "Because a USB was drawing too much power..." I thought the issue was my new phone or my Mac - this was back in mid October, but figured out the cable broke.
    Simply put -  These Lightning cables are flawed, I personally never had this issue with older 30 Pin connections.

  • Power cord for Mac Book question...need some help

    Hi...my Mom gave my niece her MacBook but kept the power cord. I bought one on eBay for her and it was a 60W MagSafe cord. She seems to be having power issues where it goes into rest mode while working on it and then takes a day or so to recover. Apple store checked it clean and installed Snow Leapord. Is it possible that she needs an 80W cable..I am not sure of the power requirements. Thanks

    Have you tried a known-good Apple adapter with the machine?
    I'd replace the adapter with one from Apple and see if the troubles persist.

  • LEOPARD, BATTERIES, POWER SUPPLY and other power issues

    Hello ALL!
    Happy New Year!
    In fact I feel a bit scary last two days. Never had this kind of feeling since LB replaced :-D My scare related to the topics i've read here about batteries and leopard. Later below i will write my questions specific.
    I just summarise my problem:
    1. With battery installed unplug from mains leads to instant shutdown like it is some desktop.
    2. The battery now does not have LED indication at all even in system it comes up as 100 charged and System Profiler reads information from battery.
    3. When In unplug the laptop from mains first time, the battery did not give any indication of level of charge before i plug it in mains, after that it started charging and system indicator was trying to calculate remaining time till the end of charge endless...
    4. This battery was working fine since 3 years without significant reduction in capacity. Before yesterday it was enough power to watch 2-2.5 hours DVD.
    5. Battery seem to be dead. Mind that it was no slow reduction in capacity (keeping charge)
    6. I was making calibration with some regularity.
    7. While sleep mode with leopard seems battery drains faster even for me seems general operation after upgrade became longer.
    So my questions are:
    1. Is my battery really dead and needs replacement?
    2. If yes, what are the symptoms of normal dying of battery?
    3. Regarding all the posts which incline to Leopard as main cause of dying batteries should I run to buy a new one ....
    4.... or it is hardware problem which lays in DC in board (heard also about battery board) which was discussed here but nobody directly gave indication that it was real cause of the problem?
    5. Is it possible that even the battery will be brand new when i plug it in laptop it will die if it something related to hardware?
    Thank you very much even for some smallest but helpful suggestion.
    Ivan
    PS: I am not in USA and not in any closest distance to Apple Store genius, most of my friends now on MB or MBP or iMac so even have nobody to try battery on exchange or even power adapter.

    You didn't answer Illaass question, the newer minis have an internal power supply and should be connected directly to your mains, older ones have an external "brick". Since you mention the internal power supply, I guess your mini is one of the former, 120-240 V mains connected directly to the computer. If so, it should not be a problem using the tv power cord, if you actually have one of the older minis I don't see how you could connect the tv power cord, the contacts are really different.
    So, if you have a new mini without power brick between the mains outlet and your computer, there should be no problem using any other mains cord, provided the contacts are the same. These power cords are massmanufactured by several manufacturers according to intnational standards and freely exchangeable.

  • Satellite Pro U400 sometimes freezes when the power cord is plugged in

    Hello! I know this problem has been discussed here and there but I would like to open a new thread on that. Here is the scenario.
    I have recently bought a new Toshiba Satellite Pro U400-247 (PSU45E) with two batteries: (a) the original one, (b) additionally purchased Toshiba genuine PA3636U-1BRL, 7200 mAh. The notebook has the latest BIOS (4.80) and the latest drivers downloaded from Toshiba and installed (ConfigFree is not installed). I am using XP Pro SP3 (clean install done by myself). Everything is working very well, except for one thing:
    Sometimes (but not always), when the notebook is working on battery and I plug in the power cord, everything freezes and I have to restart. Some observations:
    (a) it tends to happen more frequently when the low battery alarm has already sounded;
    (b) it seems to happen more frequently with the 7200 mAh battery and less frequently with the original battery;
    (c) it seems to happen more often when a USB device (e.g. mouse) has been connected with the notebook, but that is not a rule;
    (d) it seems to happen less frequently when I move the USB mouse at the time I am plugging in the power cord;
    (e) I have experimented a lot with Toshiba PowerSaver's settings (e.g. changed the CPU levels for my profiles) but nothing I have modified seems to change the situation;
    (f) I have tried various suggestions I found on different forums, but no avail (e.g. BIOS settings);
    (g) otherwise, I can say that I really have not seen a smoother computer, everything else is really working just fine, no other problems whatsoever :)
    All this makes me think that this must be some kind of bug in the motherboard drivers, the PowerSaver driver or other drivers interacting with the battery, the CPU or possibly USB. Is there an explanation for this problem and can it be rectified somehow (e.g. by providing a driver update)?

    Hello, thanks for the reply!
    My bad, of course I meant the chipset driver. That, however, does not change the essence of the question. Also, I know that a notebook should function properly even the AC adaptor is connected or not connected. That is why I posted my question.
    As for the OS reinstall, sorry, I would not do that just on some wild guess from somebody. I recently finished the clean OS install. I have installed XP on dozens of notebooks in my life and I know what I am doing. I have been into computers and networking for 15 years and I know when I see a problem not related to how I install my OSes.
    My personal opinion: this problem has not to do with the OS install since the same problem also existed when I test-installed the XP OS image from Toshiba's own downgrade CD (that was before I did a clean install from my own slipstreamed CD). And, if you really use a properly and carefully configured OS with all the necessary software, an OS reinstall is not something you just do every day.
    As for the rest (testing the memory / adapter / motherboard etc.): as I have mentioned, similar (although not identical) topics have been raised in various other instances (e.g. at http://laptopforums.toshiba.com/t5/B...EABCA64EE6C5D9) . That means that this problem is most probably not specific to my computer or even to U400 but it may happen with other Toshiba notebooks too. Therefore a (rather standard) suggestion to spend days on reinstalling (and in my case, carefully reconfiguring) the OS, checking the memory, adapter, mobo etc. does not sound as the most plausible one in this case. FYI, I always do full tests on hardware right after I have installed an OS. In this computer, all tests (Toshiba's own; 3rd party memory diagnostics, HDD diagnostics) were passed OK. Indeed, I did not have the AC adapter tested but as it otherwise works fine, the possible problem (if there is one) would be a minor one to notice, and would require testing at a Toshiba service centre (there is no direct Toshiba agency in my country). I think testing the AC adapter is the last resort as much more probably, the problem lies somewhere else.
    Even if this problem is hardware-related, I do not expect Toshiba to replace all such hardware out there. However, on many occasions, hardware-related problems can be cured or alleviated on the software side (e.g. by a driver or BIOS update). Since it seems that other people are having similar problems with Toshiba hardware/software, I thought that maybe someone has found an actual solution or maybe there are Toshiba employees reading these forums who could look into it.

  • Mag Safe power cord sparks when connected or disconnected--whereupon the MacBook Pro 13'' dumps date and time, and all passwords, plus any/all unsaved information.

    I purchased my MacBook Pro 13" from the Apple Store in Tucson, AZ, in mid-January. Since then, every time the Mag-Safe cord is jostled, not even disconnected, sparks fly from the power terminal on the computer, the computer shuts down, and dumps its passwords, as well as the date and time.
    Any work in progress is also lost.
    I work overseas, and Apple's advice was to give them my credit card number, await shipment of a new power supply and cord, and then, when I return the old power supply and cord, i'd receive a credit. That won't work, as packages from the US to my location take weeks if they arrive at all. There is no Apple Store within a reasonable distance. Or, Apple suggests, when I'm home on leave in mid-June, I should bring the computer to the Apple Store for repair--I have only days in which to do that, but I suppose I'll need to try. My concern is that I'll need to return overseas without my computer and won't be able to retrieve it for months, until my next leave.
    This issue shows up elsewhere online. Is there a short in the power terminal in the computer, or on the Mag-Safe power cord, or within the computer itself? It's a known issue, thus I wonder why it hasn't been fixed.

  • Does the battery recall affect the power cord jack?

    My computer battery is part of the recall. However in addition to the battery problem, the jack where the power cord plugs in is not working. I brought it to an authorized repair location and was told the "bronze wore off" and that the entire interior piece would have to be replaced. At a cost of approximately $500. since it is 2 years old. My question is this: could the faulty battery have affected the jack and therefore shouldnt this problem be covered under the recall?
    ibook g4   Mac OS X (10.0.x)

    Absolutely. And if they give you a hassle about it at the apple store explain to them quietly that a policy which does not factor into account the damage caused by defective parts is a marketing strategy that is admonishing the proper use of a computer. Furthermore it relegates the status of a consumer to the level of non-interest in furthering the aim of the company.
    Hows that? It's the best I could come up with but in light of the trouble with the SEC that this and other companies are facing this should be ample enough ammunition to accomplish the mission [but don't hassle with applecare take it to the store unless you have a warranty and in that case it would be covered].

  • Where to buy a 2m power cord for Apple TV And Mac mini?

    As question above. Normal figure of 8 power cords don't fit! Need a mains power extension to both Mac mini and Apple TV of at least 2m.
    Thanks

    The connector used on the Mac mini is as you say a figure of 8, the official designation being IEC C7.
    It is my experience standard C7 power leads work with no problems, see the following as an example one I believe meets your requirements, a 2M one is also available on Amazon.

  • Photosmart 6520 power cord

    I have just moved and have already matched a myriad of cables to peripherals.....however, the only power cord that is not clear is the one to my Photosmart 6520 printer. I think I was expecting a typical power cable with an inline AC adapter (like for a laptop). But all I can find is a single power cable with wall plug and a two socket plug that goes directly into the back of the printer. Does this seem correct..?
    Thanks..

    Hi,
    Yes HP Photosmart 6520 only uses one cable from wall outlet to printer, refer link below for items shipped with printer.
