Battery and Safe Sleep problems

I have a MacBook (original black, 10.4.10, 2 GHz Core Duo, 2 GB RAM).
When the battery is low, but showing some charge in the menu bar icon (either black or red), many times the computer will just shut off without any warning that my battery is low.
I have calibrated the battery by running it all the way down and then charging it full; I have done the SMC(?) reset by removing all power and holding the power button for 5 seconds. My firmware is 1.4f12.
But after this unexpected shut down occurs and I subsequently power up the MacBook, I am not restored to my previous state via Safe Sleep, so I lose unsaved changes to open documents. I am also concerned that these unexpected shut-downs will eventually lead to problems with my hard drive.
Any help?

You need to have your battery replaced. The original core duo batteries warranty was extended an extra year. Follow the instructions in the battery update on how to get this resolved. Mine was doing the same thing and a new battery fixed the problem.

  • Calibrate Battery for Mid 2010 MBP 15" and "safe" sleep

Ok, I have read various posts on what is suppose to happen. I know Apple changed the way the "computer will goto sleep when battery is drained after warning message" function from the earlier non-clam-shell MBP's did. But, I have gotten mixed messages on that as well.
What happens on my MBP when I run the battery down is that a warning message pops up, then if I do not put it to sleep or plug power in, it shuts down into safe sleep mode with the result being NOT a pulsating sleep light like the non-clam shell MBP's.
    If you read:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490
I am assuming safe sleep is not like normal sleep in that no pulsating light is present? From the link above... (but doesn't mention that "safe sleep" is a non-pulsating light version..
*Tip: When the battery reaches "empty", the computer is forced into sleep mode. The battery actually keeps back a reserve beyond "empty", to maintain the computer in sleep for a period of time. Once the battery is truly exhausted, the computer is forced to shut down. At this point, with the safe sleep function introduced in the PowerBook G4 (15-inch Double-Layer SD) computers, the computer's memory contents have been saved to the hard drive. When power is restored, the computer returns itself to its pre-sleep state using the safe sleep image on the hard drive.*
So, is this what others with this model are seeing?

I'm using the early 2011 model of the MBP 15". I experienced the same thing. I used the battery until it got to 0% and then the display turned off. The sleep light only glowed once and then faded and did not pulsate. When I pressed the Power Button, that brought up a grayed version of the desktop. And then after a few seconds, I was back to the normal desktop. Is that the same thing that happened to you?

  • Power Nap and Safe Sleep "incompatibility" will KILL your SSD ?!

    Hi!
This is a common pmset -g output from a ivy bridge Retina 15':
    Barfly-i7:~ syd$ pmset -g
    Active Profiles:
    Battery Power -1*
    AC Power -1

    Barfly-i7:~ syd$
    PREAMBLE:
I was trying to figure out (like many others on the net) the real difference between "standbydelay" and "autopoweroff delay" and I made some test that showed something that could be a SSD-Killer bug for many mac owners. (please note: I still don't fully understand why you need the 14400 delay if the standby one comes firsts and does same thing). (note 2: Mr. pmset man page editor, is very "funny" to read  "For your sake and mine, please don't use anything other 0, 3, or 25." in an official man page but you are not explaining the relevance of bits 3 and 4 with hybernate mode 25 and the use of them combined).
    THE PROBLEM:
Because of "Safe Sleep" even when RAM is still refreshed when mac enters Stanby ( from Sleep mode also called Stop in the GUI - more mess ) the contents of the ram are written to disk in /var/vm/sleepimage. So when a power faiure happens ( low batt, batt is removed, etc.) nothing is lost. In theory if you don't lose your power source you will always resume from RAM.
Problem starts if you enable Power Nap / Darke wake. As you might have noticed when the mac wakes up every hour, every software was running is resumed ( not only apple specific tasks ). So you might find some trace in your syslog of programs not finding the net, for example.
During this period of time the file system will be written by softwares and they internal state will be modified, so every hour the sleepimage file HAS TO be updated and rewritten not to create a dicrepancy between filesystem and memory after wake up from disk.
by issuing this command, before closing my lid, I had the confirmation about that:
    Barfly-i7:~ syd$ while true; do sleep 120; stat /var/vm/sleepimage; date; done > AppleSleepIsMess.log
    that is the output:
    Barfly-i7:~ syd$ cat fuckSleepMess.log

So it confirms that EVERY HOUR, after every wake up,  the content of your ram is written to disk!!! I will try also with AC connected later today.
NOTE3: the stat output is: date of creation, modification, accesstime (no atime mount for me), attributes modification but the output format IS NOT written in the stat command manual making the man page useless. (we have another man ed here!)
Thanks to the hilarious writer of the pmset manpage we know that Hybernate mode 3 is using bits 0 and 1 so without bits 2 and 3 set there should not be any page out for memory footprint before hynernating. My MBPr shoud write 16GB not 1.0 !
    Any comment, please?

    Hi,
We are aware of this problem where the setting for "Battery Health Mode" does not work in the following case:
    1.  the setting is changed while the system is undocked
    2.  then, the system is docked.
The dock battery will not know that the setting for "Battery Health Mode" has been changed.
The work-around is to toggle the setting for "Battery Health Mode" while the system is docked, as you noted.

  • Nokia Lumia 800. Battery and start up problems

    Hi there,
I have been having quite a lot of problems with my nokia lumia 800.
Firstly: When the battery dies it takes a long time to get it charged back up. I have tried cycling the charger power between the laptop and power outlet. I have to play around with the power supply for a long time before the unit actually starts charging. And even then when it has just enough charge, it tries to start up but seems to run out of power half way through the start up and I end up back playing with the charging again.
It seems that there is no battery protection in the phone and the battery can completely discharge. Which would account for the problem with getting it to charge back up.
Secondly: Yesterday the phone went dead for no reason. It had about a quarter charge in the battery. I tried to turn it back on but nothing. I tried charging it and nothing.
Again after cycling the power many times between the power outlet and the laptop, I got some response. It vibrated and displayed the low battery screen. So I thought ok, it's charging. But no.
Once it has enough battery it tries to start up and then freezes on the provider logo and does not go any further. The screen stays like this. Illuminated and with the logo.
I have tried reseting the unit by holding the power button down for 10seconds and it vibrates and tries to start up again. But again freezes.
I have noticed that when I leave it charging, the unit gets quite warm. But no matter what I do the startup proceedure stops on the provider logo and no more.
I tried starting it with the charger connected and it just seems to be powering the screen because when I unplug it the unit goes dead again within a matter of minutes.
I am at a total loss as to what happened to my phone.
    Can someone help please?

From the sound of it I think it needs a Nokia Care Point. Could be faulty battery or faulty charging.  You can locate your nearest care point using the link below

  • Photoshop and Mac sleep problem.

Hi everyone, I have a MacBook Pro Retina, intel i7, 8 GB of RAM, SSD, I've installed the Photoshop CC (2014) trail version, because i'm interested to buy the complete version. The problem is that if my mac goes in stop, only after the installation of PS, when i try to use it, the MacBook shows me only a black screen with the pointer for about 30 second. I called Apple Support and they say me to contact Adobe support. Anyone has the same problem? How can I solve it? I'm interested to buy the complete version, but I don't want this problem. Thank you!

  • Vision M Battery and Safe USB Disconnect Quest

Hello,When I got my Vision M, I let it charge, and when it still didn't signify that it was fully charged after an almost 24hour charge, I just pulled out the USB cables because I couldn't find a "safely disconnect the USB device" option around. I listened to songs and looked at photos and that was lovely, but... I'm not sure how long the battery lasted before it hit the /4 mark, but I'm charging it now, and knowing that just pulling out USB cables (especially when batteries may/may not be fully charged) is not beneficial to the longterm battery life of my mp3 player, I was just wondering...what's going on?I don't think that the battery lasted very long, and I'm starting to get worried. Any help would be welcome!

Ram is right just dont mess with it while its transferring music or w/e. Something I also noticed is if your going to unplug it, unplug before the battery becomes all green because if you unplug while its all green and replug back into your comp, it will say that its fully charged when it isnt and i had to watch a 0 min video and then it would charge again. Other than that, its cool.

  • Can you swap batteries while in safe sleep

I've got the first gen 1.8 MacBook, and I'm curious whether I could swap the battery in safe sleep, without the AC plugged in.
Reason I ask is that I've got the original battery, which has about 375 cycles, and about 3h of usable life (nothing too strenuous for it), and I've now got a new one. I'm thinking of using them both at the same time if possible.
PS: What's the deal with the downgrading battery updater from 1.3->1.2 business?

The battery updater deal is the 1.3 update is for the MacBook Pro. Tiger 10.4.11 and Leopard both install it as the default even on the MacBook. When it is in the MacBook it creates problems for people. Usually replacing it with the correct update 1.2 fixes them. I do not see any reason you couldn't swap batteries in safe sleep mode.

  • Permanent fix for disabling safe sleep?

I am frustrated with my MacBook Pro's safe sleep 'feature'. I found the standard way of de-activating it (with the pmset commands), and this works in the short term, but within a few days, either through changing the energy settings or other ways, it always reverts to the original setting of having safe sleep activated.
I found SmartSleep, which allows one to turn off safe sleep without typing the pmset commands, but no luck - after a few days, it will revert to safe sleep.
This is very frustrating, and I'm not sure how to permanently disable this. I have read people suggesting writing a startup script, but I hardly ever reboot my laptop (the only times I have are after typing the pmset commands!) so this wouldn't really solve the problem.
Does anyone know of a permanent fix for this?
    Thanks!

The terminal commands are the most permanent way you'll find.
Here's the issue: If you launch Energy Saver and choose ANY of Apple's pre-defined settings like "longer battery life," safe sleep is automatically turned on. To avoid this, you must avoid selecting any of the default power configurations. You can still manually set the sleep and display timers, you just can't use Apple's predefined profiles.
Make sure you delete the virtual memory space reserved for safe sleep after you disable it, too. Here's the link:

  • Doesn´t go to safe sleep

I have some troubles with my MacBook. Is just 1 month old. It has Leopard version 10.5.1
I have done the calibration more than once. The problem is when using the battery. I use the all charge until the warning about 10 minutes left of battery. After the 10 minutes, the computer should go into "safe sleep" mode, but it doesn't: It just shuts down!! I have the option "put to sleep hard drive when possible" turned on. According to the Terminal, I´m in mode 3 of sleep mode.
Today I went to Genius Bar and they told me to do the calibration, but I've done it many times, I always use the full cycle (dont charge the battery until the warning message about the 10 minutes), but the problem continues.
    Please, help
    Sebastian

I noticed the same problem with my Macbook recently (battery draining during sleep), and found this post while search for a solution. I have tried a few measures, but the last was one resetting my PRAM (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379). I did notice an improvement after that & my Macbook seems to be draining less power.
Not sure about the safe sleep problem though.

  • Safe Sleep Does Not Appear to be Working

    Dear Forum,
I using a 2.33GHz MacBook Pro 17” 3GB RAM 10.6.2 (FireWire HDD Start up (Boot) via a FireWire 6 port hub).
I have calibrated the battery (after replacing the original) on three occasions, however the system does not restore from the point just prior to the battery turning the system off. Instead after the battery is drained completely (after 6 hours or so) and after plugging in the charger and pressing the power button I get a grey screen, then after a few seconds the screen goes black then I hear the boot up chime and the apple logo appears.
I thought the system was able to remember where it was before the battery drained.
I have used this command in Terminal:
    pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
and have received this in reply:
    hibernatemode 3
but as I am using Secure Virtual Memory, I read I needed to use mode 7 so I tried…
    sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 7
    which returned:
    hibernatemode 7
so it looks like I entered the correct command.
Furthermore, it would appear that something is happening when I choose sleep, as the Mac takes anywhere up to 30 seconds to do as I ask. (This from the sounds of it (literally) is doing what it should do (writing its current state to the drive), as I can hear the G-Drive Mini working away.)
Q1: Have I entered the correct command? (I am not fluent in the language, I was merely following directions.) (Is this command correct for this Mac?)
Q2: Can the MacBook Pro enter hibernate mode when booted from an external Firewire drive (G-Tech Mini 250GB (GUID partition))?(Apple says using a FireWire Drive to boot from is OK, at least from what I have read, so I am assuming they would have looked into various usage possibilities (Hibernate (Safe Sleep) mode, one would think is a usage possibility.))
Q3 I would prefer not to use third party software (Deep Sleep, Smart Sleep) unless I am absolutely forced in to it, as this function is written into the system (therefore should work without third party controls), so can this issue be solved with the setup I have?
Q4: Have I missed the point somewhere, or misunderstood, what the hibernate mode (safe sleep) is all about and in fact I am asking too much to expect the system to remember where it was after completely draining the battery? (Yet I don’t believe I have misread the following: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1757)
I would very much like to get this operational as you can imagine as it is an incredibly useful feature.
    Thanks.

Well the solution is: Restore from Time Machine to MacBook Pro internal HDD and Safe Sleep functions correctly.
Now how do I get a bigger HDD into the Mac...

  • New Sleep Problem Information

RE: Computer won't wake from sleep
I've read through most of the threads regarding this problem and have begun to narrow down some things. One by one, I've tried different configurations during sleep. I only have this problem when my wireless mouse is plugged into the USB port. Now I'm not sure if Bluetooth mice have the same problem. Please post if you're having this problem with a Bluetooth mouse so we can see if it's a "wireless mouse" problem, or if it has something to do with the USB ports. When I need to sleep the computer - I leave everything the way it normally is (i.e. backup drive, ethernet cable and power cable plugged in) and I just unplug the USB wireless mouse module. The computer sleeps and wakes without a problem.

    Message was edited by: Robinest

I went to check on my preferences for my wireless mouse and found that during the install of Leopard my control panel held onto the original install of my mouse - it then added another with the install. I had the same control panel listed twice. It must have created a conflict upon waking from sleep. Once I reinstalled my mouse software, the control panel only listed one mouse and the sleep problem was resolved!

  • Battery, Power, Deep Sleep and Spotlight problems after 10.9.4 update

Hi, I have a Macbook Pro 8,1 13in (Late 2011). I updated to the latest version of Mavericks (10.9.4) and iTunes on Sunday, right after that my macbook started to goes into Deep Sleep after closing the lid, even when the battery was 80% of charge. My battery normally lasts for almost 5 hours. After it went to deep sleep, the power bottom does not respond. Also, I have noticed that spotlight process in Monitor was consuming so huge amount of resources. This problem persists in Boot Camp. There is no way to turn the machine up without plugging it to the power cord. Sometimes it charges the battery as usual, sometimes it does not recognize the battery. Suddenly, the mac goes into sleep mode while I'm using it.
I have researching and troubleshooting in order to fix this but no solution. I have reset the PRAM and SMC. I made a backup of my files and installed Mavericks from the ground with external storage in order to erase the entire disk, no solution. I made an Internet Recovery and downgraded it to Lion, it worked for 2 hours and then I upgraded again to Mavericks (10.9.0) and the same problem came again, the upgraded to 10.9.4 and no solution at all.
I have searched on internet and there are other people experiencing this problem but nobody is able to bring a valid solution.

Reseting the NVRAM/PRAM doesn't solve my problems.
Hi, since you have performed NVRAM /PRAM reset, try:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
and if still issues persist,  try: OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
    Cheers

  • Download, battery, and sleep problems on macbook pro with retina display after upgrading to Mountain lion

After waiting a few days to download OS X Mountain lion, I finally installed it on my new MacBook with retina display a couple days ago. I love the interface and all the new features, but I've noticed some problems I really need to resolve. I'm constantly downloading large files and I noticed thhis change:
Before, on Lion, I could download files from Safari or the Internet and the computer would sleep whenever it was set to on energy preferences and the download would resume. This would let the computer conserve energy so the download could progress further when on battery. Now, I noticed that my computer never goes to sleep! Its set to have the display sleep in 5 minutes and the computer in 15 on both battery and when plugged in, but it never does either. I don't know if it has to do with the fact that power nap is on even when using battery. So now the Mac is constantly on when downloading something and instead of downloading a one gigabyte file that would take up 15% of my battery, it takes up 60% since it never sleeps. When I tried downloading something and then manually putting the computer to sleep, the download was interrupted and it said Wi-Fi connection lost so I have to start the download over again.
That's basically all three problems in one situation. I even put the brightness all the way on low so the screen is black when downloading, but it still uses up much more battery than before. Can someone help find a solution?

Did you try turning off power nap?
