Battery backup/ surge protector and sleep power cycle on my iMac

I have a simple question regarding whether my iMac is going through a power cycle when asleep. The situation: my iMac and various peripherals are powered through an APC battery backup/ surge protector. The iMac is plugged into the master outlet on the battery backup of course.
I have a set of very good computer speakers which are plugged into the outlets controlled by the master outlet; these power down when the master outlet device (the iMac) goes to sleep. The strange thing is that while iMac is asleep I hear the speakes ocassionally power on (the bass cube makes a noise that indicates this). So it seems there is a powering down and on cycle going. Is this normal? Should I change anything in my setup. APC recommends plugging peripherals (like speakers, which they name specifically) into these controlled outlets to save energy.
It may be that I simply need to contact APC to change the threshold sensitiviy, however, it is currently set to medium (the recommended default).
Thanks for your help.

I may have mistated. The APC manual states the following:
"To conserve electricity, configure the Back-UPS to recognize a Master device, such as a desktop computer..., and Controlled peripheral devices, such as a printer, speakers, or a scanner. When the Master device goes into Sleep or Standby mode, or is switched OFF, the Controlled device(s) will be switched off as well, saving electricity."
The thing is that I seem to hear the speaker going on.. (thus they must be also going off) from time to time while the iMac is asleep. Again this may be a question for APC.
Thanks for your help.

  • VDSL modem in sync, HH3 and HH2v2 power cycles int...

Dear All, Firstly this is my first post on the forums so hello to all. On to my topic, A friend of mine has a very very interesting FTTC fault. The VDSL modem is in sync, but the HH3 from 3 blue lights, will suddenly shut off and restart. This happens any ware between every 10-45 mins. Here is the fun bit: Engineers have replaced the modem and the HH3 3 times. They have even tried a HH2 infinity router which lasted longer than the 3 but to no avail. The modem and Router are both plugged into a surge protector. They have both been tried on regular sockets. The VDSL modem is always happy, in sync but the routers are being power cycled. There is no line issues, no CRCs as the engineers have said. The speeds to the VDSL modem are all fine, and the speed of the BB is working fine, its just the random power cycling of the routers that has everyone stumped. Yes its been turned off and on Yes its all plugged in Yes all cables have been tried and tested One Ethernet device, other wireless laptops There is no trigger, weather simple MSN text or HD streaming there seems to be no trigger as such for the router So tech guys, i would not bother you with a simple one, here is the mystery, whats the theory's?

After a worrying start very nice replies thanks guys! so firstly
@ HH replacements he had one, BT sent him one and the engineer used one. I know for a fact these are all from different batches.
@ channel changing Not only would the amount of random channels the smart wireless would have been using with the ammount of swaps, the engineer set the wireless channel whilst doing interrogations on the router.
@ electircal supply Here was the ebst bit, the engineer knows about REIN (f Repetitive Electrical Impulse Noise). In the room with the router there are LOTS of powerboards and power adaptors link multiple supplys. There are pets, a pc, standard sky tv boxs and relavant go withs. SO yeah lots of stuff. The uncle is a sparky, checked the house and said all good. We have a UPS (i think thats what it is called) which can deliver a constant voltage no matter what, even from that it was going fine then boom power cycle.
Feed back from 12 hour obs: The HH2 apparently has made it much more berable, taking around an hour or more till it resets. Engineer came round and did a lift and shift to get a new port from the dslam. At that point the engineer had been told he had to leave, but he justified it. There was nothing else that they can do, port, line, socket, HH modem have all been eliminated from the enquiery.
At this point the router had been moved by the enginner to the best poisbble location in the lounge for it to not be near a source of potential REIN. Then he told us that he wanted to find out what the problem was because it was a "mystery" and he was interested. He told about REIN and how to test for it (AKA long time of having not a lot plugged in and before anyone got mad (and lets be real this guy was not just going to come over and say "sorry man we don't know how to fix this" ) he also advised us to talk to our Service provide (aka BTR ) and to tell them what the issues are. So what do people think of this ?

  • HT2173 I turned off my desktop to plug it into a surger protector and now I'm not sure how to turn it back on

I turned off my computer so I could plug it into a surge protector. Not sure how to turn computer back on.

Making sure the surge protector is turned on, plug in the computer and press the power button on the right rear of the machine.

  • I had a power outage, my battery powered surge protector worked.  But now when I turn on my Apple TV, I cannot get beyond the computer and setting screen, and see the Apple TV options screen.  What step am I missing.  Internet is working.

After the power outage, turned on TV and tried connecting to my Apple TV, but directed to a screen with a computer Icon and a Setting Icon.  Can't get past this screen to my TV options screen.  Internet is connected???  How to I get to my TV options?

Yes I had already reset my internet connection and had no progress.  However, while I was trying to figure out a solution I used my Apple TV to listen to music from my computer.  Then I went back and tried again and the TV icons appeared - and Apple TV was working

    Hey,
Here are the steps that should help:
    1. Close all applications.
    2. Go into the Finder>Home>Library>Preferences
    3. Delete 'com.apple.iDVD.plist' and 'com.apple.iTunes.plist'
    4. Restart Immediatley.
    This should work. Cheers, Ricky.

  • Surge protectors and mains filters

I recently posted to say that my Tagan PSU blew up (OK it went pop and stopped!), and I had to go back to an old Enermax 365w PSU with only 14a on the 12v. This has not caused any problems, and I have been playing HL2 with an overclocked system (I only overclock when I need too). This makes it curious that so  many have problems even with the "mandatory" high ampage 12v PSU.
Well one thing I forgot was that I run my system through a Belkin Surgeprotector (mains filter and distribution block). I just wondered if the "need" to have 20+amp on the 12v could be a mains "quality" issue, rather than purely an ampage issue?
Are some people suffering from "noisy" mains?

  • Do you know of a place in Delhi, India that sells adapter / surge protector

Last night in the hotel, first night in delhi and BOOM! All lights went out, surge protector smoked. Does anyone know what travel adapter and converter and surge procoter is needed and where in Delhi it would be available, a reliable source, brand new macbook and no power. please help lost in india.

Hey LostNindia and welcome to the discussions!
I was just traveling in Delhi and several other parts of India with my MacBook. I'm no expert in this area, but I'll let you know what I had that worked. I took with me a power converter and a two prong and three prong adaptor. I ended up never using the power converter, because the MacBook's power brick can handle up to 240 volts, which is the voltage in India. So, I don't believe you need a power convertor as I had no trouble with my American MacBook. I didn't bring a surge protector, and that may or may not have been wise. We had one power outage, but the MacBook was not plugged in at the time. So, I am unfortunately little help as to a suggestion for that, but I managed to make it without one. If you are looking for an adaptor, I'd suggest a three-prong adaptor. Two prong (the same as the UK) works, but not in all outlets. The prong outlets appeared to be located everywhere.
As for a place to purchase these items- I noticed adaptors in the airport, but that probably is not accessible to you. I saw numerous electronics boutiques throughout India, and bought a firewire cable in one location- little shops like these probably have adaptors (and for cheap, too). I don't know where you are staying, but your hotel desk can probably recommend a place for the adaptors. The surge protector may be harder to find, but was also something I did not use.
As a completely unrelated suggestion, I'd suggest turning off your wireless capabilities as there are few networks to access, and it nearly halves your battery life. I turned off mine and got over 5 hours of battery life while I was traveling the country.
Hope this helps (and thanks to Niel for showing me this topic),

  • External hard drive won't power back up when iMac wakes from sleep

I have the external hard drive connected via USB. I always put my iMac to sleep before going to bed and I wake it up when I come home from work. Except that when I do, the external hard drive doesn't power up. It still shows in Finder, but clicking on it's folders just opens them up as if they were empty. There's no access noise and the drive can't be ejected.I have to switch it's power off and turn it back on for it to spin back up.
At first I thought it was because I had Energy Saver set to power down the drives whenever possible, which works just fine when it's on, the drive powers on and off as needed just as long as the iMac doesn't go to sleep. I turned it off just to make sure and it made no difference. As soon as the iMac goes to sleep and the drives powers down, it will not come back on without a power cycle once the iMac wakes.
I've used this drive in an old Macbook for years without having this problem. The only difference is that the Macbook was on 10.6.8. I was thinking about buying a 4 bay USB enclosure and filling it up with hard drives, but I'm not about to do that if every time I put the iMac to sleep, the whole thing will not power back on without a power cycle.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Not sure if you managed to get this issue resolved yet Marcus, but I too have a similar problem:
Currently I'm upgrading from Leopard to Lion (via Snow Leopard) on both an iMac and MacBook Pro (both Intel), but before I proceed with the OSX upgrade I wanted to back everything up. Thus far I have partitioned an external firewire drive (G Drive - one that is bootable), and cloned each machine using Carbon Copy Cloner to it's own partition (both GUID). There is plenty of space left over on each partition.
The issue - I can boot the OS X from the external drive on the MacBook Pro but not on the iMac.
When I restart and hold down Option on the iMac the only drive that appears is the HDD, not the other two selectable drives that are visible if I boot up on the MacBook Pro. On the iMac in System Prefs > Startup Disc I can see all 3 drives but when I select it and restart, the machine freezes on the grey loading screen and goes no further.
Not that it should make a difference, but there is a 3rd partition on the external drive that is currently empty (for extra storage).
Any help is greatly appreciated - I can't find any relevant answers elsewhere. Thanks,
    Dan

  • Fios battery backup questions

I am wondering if the fios battery backup is okay with generator power.  I have a generac whole house generator and I have one ups that is fine with it and a smaller one that does not like the power it puts out.
Wondering if the fios ups will work with it or keep going on and off house power during an outage.
Also, does the fios backup keep every fios service running?  I realize the stb's need another power supply.

Does Verizon offer an option where they back up the internet service as well?  It just seems silly to back up one UPS with another.  It's hard to imagine that this option wouldn't be available for business customers.
No, the BBU is only intended for the phone system. The thought behind that was that if power went out, then your computers and TV's would not have power to run (not considering laptop batteries) so there would be no need for internet and video to work if the power was out. And with only having to power the phone, the power draw is low enough to make a battery feasible. If it had to power the internet and video as well, that battery would have a significantly lower life expantcy. And many areas of the country require the phone to work for a certain amount of time which is one of the reasons for the battery in the first place. Adding the other services to that list would lower the battery life enough to violate the reqirements for the phone to work. Hence, the bbu only powers the tv/internet for 5 minutes after the power goes out, then it drops the internet/video to save power for the phone.

  • It printed three pictures and lost power.HP Deskjet F4580 print.scan. copy

HP Deskjet F4580 print.scan.copy. No power.

OK, unplug the power cord from both the wall and the printer for 5 minutes.  Plug back in (into a wall outlet, not a power strip or surge protector) and turn on.
If that does not work, this is how to contact HP support: www.hp.com/go/totalcare (click on Printers & Monitors, there is a phone number on the resulting page).

  • Razr keeps power cycling

My Razr suddenly starting power cycling yesterday. It was close to a full battery and I set it down for about an hour. When I picked it back up, it was completely unresponsive - the battery had died. I plugged it in to recharge and when it finally got up enough charge to power back on, I got the Select Dock Type message (supposedly connected to HDMI even though it wasn't.) After a few minutes, it started the power cycling and hasn't stopped. I did a factory reset, hoping that would work, but I get the "please wait, this may take a few minutes" screen then it restarts again.
It seems like a hardware issue but I'm concerned about sending it back and getting a new phone because I dropped it a while back and there's a ding on the corner near the headphone jack. I don't want to be on the hook for the full retail price of this phone if they decide that ding caused the problem (even though it worked fine after I dropped it and this power cycling/hdmi problem happened out of the blue.) Is there anything else I can do to fix it?

Well then the Only solution i would have.. Holly would be shut your Maxx down Pull the Sim Card leave it out for 2 min then Re-install it. Was the phone bought an card installed at the Store Holly if so the Rep doing the Install might have touched the Sim Card the Gold area of  them is really sensitive to Static Electricity & the Oils in our fingers an if touched they can Fail or Cause issues in your phone.. To Understand this a little better it's like taking a Magnet an Going over a Credit card you do it once or Twice over the Strip it can Render the Card Useless. So you might try getting a New Card an see if that Works But Remember Watch how you hold the Sim Card.. Good Luck b33

  • Do I need a surge protector for charging my Macbook?

Do I need to get a surge protector to protect against possible surges for when I'm charging or using my macbook while plugged in? I don't care if the adapter gets fried, but I'm worried that it could short the computer out. Please give recommendations.

You don't NEED a serge protector, but it would be
nice to have one. My MacBook, external speakers,
external HD, cell phone, and Nintendo DS all have
their power adapters plugged into one. Another
contains my TV and PS2. What I'm trying to get at
is, if your MacBook alone isn't reason enough for you
to buy a surge protector, then maybe all of your
electronic devices are. They can all benefit from
the surge protector and $10 now can save you
thousands of dollars in the future.
    so very true!

  • Do I need a surge protector for my macbook pro

I just got a new macbook pro retina. Do I need a surge protector for it? Will a cheap one from walmart do? I have it pluged up with the power brick into the 3 pronged cord that came with it. I unplug it from the wall whenever there is a lightening storm like last night. Do they really even work?

It's better to be safe than sorry as my fater would say ;) I always use a surge protector and prefer Belkin but I'm sure anything is better than nothing!
