Battery capacity after 200 load cycles - what is normal?

My battery capacity has been fairly steady at around 92%(5100 mAh) between cycles 125 and 200. I baby it and always use a cool pod to prevent overheating. Then, within 3 charge cycles, it dropped to around 4500-4600 mAh (82-84%). Apple care told me that their engineers consider this capacity as normal. Upon asking what would be considered as not normal, I was told Apple would not release this information. But it is general knowledge that Apple guarantees 80% after 300 cycles. Good luck if my battery will last that long at that level. After another 10 cycles, the battery is still at that 82% plus level.
I am concerned about this sudden drop: is it the microchip on the battery, that is going?

I've never heard, nor read that Apple "guarantees" anything like what you say. Apple claims:
"Battery Lifespan
For Apple notebooks with removable batteries — such as previous generation MacBook and MacBook Pro computers — a properly maintained battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 300 full charge and discharge cycles. You may choose to replace your battery when it no longer holds sufficient charge to meet your needs."
There is not guarantee mentioned or implied in that statement. Whether any particular battery still has 80% life at 300 cycles is anyone's guess. It depends entirely on the manner in which it was used, operating temperatures it was subjected to and so on.
IMO, if you are over 200 cycles and you are starting to feel that the battery is not holding sufficient charge for your needs, it's time to shop for a new one. Batteries are a consumable item - they will fail with enough time and use - that much is guaranteed. It is a function of unavoidable internal oxidation and degradation of chemical components, not of the "smart" battery control circuitry.

I just bought a new macbook pro 13-inch 6 days ago. I ran coconut battery test and it says age of the macbook is 22 weeks. It shows 4 battery load cycles and battery capacity is 96%. Is this all normal? Does anyone have same issues?

    "Is this all normal?"
    Yes.
    "Does anyone have same issues?"
    What issues?
Coconut indicates an approximate battery capacity, and 96% is excellent.  During testing and run-in, the MBP is charged and discharged, and a cycle count of 4 is appropriate.

  • Battery capacity after 10 weeks only 90% ??

    Hello community!
I hope I'll get some information here, since I am a new mac user
    Hope you guys can help?!
Here's the thing: I got my macbook pro in october 2010 (mid 2010 model)
I've been using coconut capacity monitor since the beginning and always monitored the battery life. Yesterday I noticed, that coconut says battery capacity is 90% of the original capacity! Coconut says that I did around 48 load cycles so far.
my question: What am I doing wrong here? I always try to work with the mbp until it runs out of battery; I don't plug it in before, no charging when the battery is not completely empty. How can it happen, that the capacity reduces that fast?
What should I do in order to preserve the battery life? Is it possible to restore the 100% battery capacity by recalibrating it several times (like the apple support page advices) ??
Thank you for you answers and your help in advance!!
    Kind regards,
    griesTraum

With 48 load cycles in only ten weeks, you're working your battery very hard. And always running the battery down to zero before recharging it is a bad practice that will age your battery prematurely. If your work and lifestyle don't require you to consume the full capacity of the battery almost daily, don't do it.
It's not unusual to see the battery's reported Full Charge Capacity (and consequently its "health") fluctuate up and down by several percentage points from day to day and week to week, particularly when it's relatively new. If you give the battery at least a little use every few days, it should be calibrated every two or three months. Calibrate it now or as soon as it's convenient for you, then try to keep it plugged into AC power most of the time, using the battery for just an hour or two every day or two "to keep the electrons moving," as Apple says. This will be an ideal use pattern for the longevity of your battery. If it doesn't fit your life, don't do it: the battery exists to serve you, not you to serve it.
The best summary of useful information about MBP batteries that I know of is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1764220
If after following these suggestions for a few weeks, your battery's health continues to decline steadily and rapidly, you may have a defective battery. But until it shows less than 80% health, you're unlikely to get anything from Apple other than a report that it is "within specifications." So if you think it may be defective, wait until it shows 75-78% health for a least a week or two, and continues to show less than 80% after a new calibration. Then take it to an Apple Store, where they have a specific test they can run on it, and ask to have it tested. If it's defective, you'll get a free replacement.

  • Battery life past 300 load cycles?

I've got this battery from a recall about a year and a half ago (not sure exactly when). It has 319 load cycles and I have noticed that I have only been getting about 45 mins to a charge, down from about 3 hours. Right now the current capacity is at 1659 mAh down from 4400 mAh, 37% of the original capacity.
Is it unusual for a battery to be this low already? I feel like I just got the thing.

For some reason, there have been a number of people posting that their recall batteries are short lived. Typical recommendation is to return it to Apple, to see if they'll do anything. They do consider the battery to be a consumable item, and with 319 cycles on it, they may not be inclined to replace it. However, you don't know if you don't ask. The Apple note on battery maintenance says a well-maintained battery should retain 80% capacity after 300 cycles. Here's the note: http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html

  • Service battery message after only 147 cycles

I have a 2010 Macbook Pro with Mavericks on it.
After only 147 cyles I am getting a message that says "Service Battery"
    Why would this be happening?
I did some searching and see it might be a common problem? Is Apple going to fix this?
Doesn't make sense after that many cycles to need to replace the battery....

  • Battery Capacity after 3 cycles

    Hi all,
I have a late 2013 rmbp. I've been reading up a lot on how to best treat the built in battery to maximize battery life. This laptop is only 1 week old and I've discharged once to about 40% and used the unit on batter a second time to about 50%. I'm now planning on using it on the power adapter mode when at my desk and using it on battery mode when going mobile. My question is though is that according to my coconut battery app, I'm already only at 97% max capacity! Is this normal? This battery has only been through 3 cycles of charging.
The max charge went from 6330mAh to 6153mAh in the 1 week I've owned this computer. Since I'm new to the macbook world, I was wondering if this is normal and was hoping someone could give me some insight to how fast the Max Charge capacity drops over time in relation to the Design Capacity. I'm still within my return period if I need to return this computer :/
For reference, my battery was manufactured 4/24/2014.
    many thanks!

It's best not to concern yourself with this degree of detail. Over a long period of time, its maximum charge capacity will decrease. Over a shorter period of time its maximum charge capacity may decrease or increase. One week and three charge cycles is not enough to draw any conclusions about anything. Typically, the maximum capacity percentage will settle to a value in the mid - 90s and will stay there for a long time.
Your MacBook Pro's battery is the product of decades of research and is going to last for years, perhaps for as long as you own your Mac, or want to own it before it eventually becomes functionally obsolete.
All batteries are wear items that will eventually need to be replaced. Budget 50¢ a week for battery depreciation and you will have more than enough saved to replace it when the time comes.
I'm now planning on using it on the power adapter mode when at my desk and using it on battery mode when going mobile.
That's a fine strategy. Follow Apple's usage recommendations, but don't obsess over such minutia. On the other hand if you are seeking to indulge your paranoia concerning over- or under- charging your Mac, the proper methods by which you must obsess about its incessant need for proper care and pampering, and to hear admonishments about the a parade of horribles that will result in your failure to acquiesce to superstition and myth, your needs will be met in by a number of charlatans in a variety of fonts and garish colors. You will believe them because they will validate what you have already decided to be true.

  • 85% current capacity after 4 cycles in Macbook Pro Retina.

Is it normal that I have only 85% current capacity after just four cycles in Macbook Pro with Retina Screen? A little bit over 7140 mAh compared to 8460 mAH in design capacity?
    Should I call Apple Support?

    Hey Allan,
    Greetings!
Yes you rightly pointed out the changed format
And I have been around for a few years but mostly get active whenever I purchase a new Macbook. you know how the honeymoon period is
Unfortunately I am experiencing two difficulties myself which I haven't been able to figure out.
I have this late 2013 Macbook pro Retina, 13". Purchased it 20 days ago!
    Now the two problems are
    1. Safari sometimes doesn't load some pages and apple.com being one of them. Again as I read somewhere when opened on the Chrome and then back on safari almost at the same time, safari pulls it up.
I dont prefer other browsers as my battery discharge becomes rather quick on chrome doing the same task.
Do you hav any idea what might be wrong. I tried switching of all extensions and plug ins. Also did a few resets.
Read somewhere that it has to do something with the DNS of the router but then why this erratic behaviour and not a consistent one.
    2. My battery is also showing erratic behaviours. The max health varies between 6350 to 6673 (Didn't see the later for last few days). Also the life the system predicts vastly varies doing the same tasks. Sometimes if I am reading a page online it would show 14 hours on 100% and sometimes just 7-8.
The worst part is that the it just doesn't show it that way rather behaves the same way. That means that battery actually drains at the rate the sytme predicts.
Also even in shut down (and not sleep), the system tends to use charge at a rate of 1% per 8 hours.
All this mentioned in the paint 2 started happening when my machine got drained to 1% power remaining once and the other time was shut down as I was travelling and didn't have the charger. Is that to blame?
    Any input would be appreciated.

  • What is the original battery capacity in mAh for MBPr?

My laptop battery is very poor (4 hours) in %25 birghtness.
My Original battery capacity is 8400 mAh
    Cycle count 5
What is the original battery capacity of the laptop should be?

When I charge my battery, brand new rMBP it says design capacity of 8460, current capacity of 8565, but current charge of only 8142.. why would they all be different?

  • Oh NO! Calibration is actually sucking my battery capacity!

from all those articles, I learn that calibration is such a good thing to keep the battery power, yet sadly find out that after every calibration my battery capacity lost some 50 ~ 100 mAh! and whenever this happens, I thought that I might did the calibration wrongly, so then I did it again and again !
Here's how it looks like, only after 41 load cycles(i bought MBP for 1 and half month)
    ORIGINAL: 5500
    1st calibration, about 5400
    2nd calibration, 5350
    3rd calibration: 5256, 95%
    4th calibration: 5179, 94%
Please help! how can I restore the battery capacity ? what is the calibration actually doing??

It is nothing to worry about at this stage. What happens is that the PMU (Power Management Unit) needs time to get a feel for your typical power usages so when computers are new they tend to flip-flop around a bit. Just use you battery a bit more and give a week or so to settle down.
The more you use your macBook on battery the more accurate this reading will become. If things really deteriorate after say a month or two then call Applecare. They will replace it.

  • Battery capacity, rapid drop???

    Hi everyone.
    I have a 2010 Macbook Air 13".
Every once in a while I check the battery capacity through Coconut battery and through System Profiler (coconut battery always reports the same numbers).
For the longest time the battery capacity (not the current charge, but the actual capacity of the battery) sat around 99% of it's original amount. (Design capacity is 6700 mAh).
However, in the space of 2 incomplete charges (ie. charging from say 40% to 100%) over about 3 days, the capacity of the battery dropped to 96% and then to 93%. (Current capacity 6262 mAh).
This battery is supposed to still have 80% of its capacity after 1000 charge cycles and it is now down to 93% and I have 66 load cycles on the battery (the system is mainly used plugged in, but I make sure to use it off the charger a few times a month to keep the electrons moving).
What could be causing this? Should I just take the laptop in to have Apple check it? Or could the system be somehow mis-reporting the capacity of the battery. I don't think I should have already lost almost 10% of the battery capacity in a little over 6 months of owning it and less than 100 full charges of the battery.
It seems a bit odd to me for the battery capacity to be stable for months and then to drop so rapidly in the space of a few days.
    Thanks everyone!

Lithium Ion battery behavior varies up and down from day to day.  The design capacity is never actually realized in a consumer product due to manufacturing tolerances.
The life of a Li-Ion battery is usually considered to be 80% of capacity, but that does not mean the battery will fail at the point but that is just a number for determining charge/use time that is reasonable for most users.
Li-Ion battery life cycles vary from 350-1,000 full charge cycles.  If you discharge to 50% and recharge fully, that is 1/2 charge cycle.
The recommendation for occasional full discharge, not actually FULL discharge but to the point the unit shuts down, and then fully recharging before use is to condition the charge reporting circuitry built into the battery itself.  It does not actually condition the battery like it did in the old Ni-Cad battery days.  If you click on the apple in the upper left corner, About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Power and the battery information look at the Condition...if it does not say Normal there may be a problem.  You will also see the number of charge cycles, and the charge remaining and Capacity...the ratito of the two should be close to the reported charge remaining in the upper right portion of your screen.
Your battery does not really sound like it is bad...but see what the system report says about the Condition...if it is Normal, Apple is not very likely to do anything about it.

  • 2008 Refurb MBP battery capacity

Hi all...I recently had to return my mbp battery when it crapped out, and i'm currently using the replacement (thanks apple)...I've been regular with calibration etc. (did it as soon as the battery was installed)...What I didn't do was check the initial capacity. my current cycles/capacity is 52/4742.
Based on what I've been reading around here with people having 5500-6000 mAh full charge capacity, am I wrong in thinking mine seems low, or is it ok for the charge cycles?
    Thanks for any help!

The nominal Full Charge Capacity of your battery is about 4650mAh, and it's currently indicating more than that — which is commonplace. The battery in my own 5,1 was still pretty consistently above its nominal capacity after nearly 100 cycles and a full year of use, averaging out the normal small up-and-down fluctuations from one day or week to another. So you've got a good battery.

  • Battery capacity went down, overnight

So i bought my MBP Nov 06, and since then it has been working great. Then about half a year ago i would find that the battery, when discharged completely, and then charged back up, would have significantly less max capacity then it did the day before. I would then use the computer for a while, not on AC power, and the max capacity would jump back up to 99% or so, as stated in coconut battery but it can easily be calculated by dividing my current capacity from 5500mAh, from anywhere between 60% and 80%. I didn't think of it too much, but then a few weeks ago, it did it again, but now it is not going back up to the max capacity. It is staying at 67%-68%. The battery only has 74 load cycles on it, and it has been at 99% for about a year, since i don't use it on battery that much. I found this:
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook...batteryupdate/
However it looks like it only extends the warranty of the battery on CD MBP, not the C2D. But this shouldn't matter, my battery is terrible, and i just noticed last night that it was charging for five hours. I thought it would have finished, but it just kept going, and was down to 47% max capacity. Then i left it in sleep mode, and it used 10% battery, and went back up to 67% this morning. Any suggestions, otherwise over christmas break i'll bring it to an Apple store.
    Here are the details:
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 3739
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 3722
    Amperage (mA): 196
    Voltage (mV): 12632
    Cycle Count: 74
    Thanks

They certainly haven't charged me. The on-line instructions said you'd need to take the machine into an authorised dealer or such, fairly inconvenient from where I live, but I just phoned the number given for UK service (see http://www.apple.com/support/contact/phone_contacts.html for worldwide contact details) and described the problem. I started by saying that the MBP was certainly out of warranty but that I believed the battery failure fell within their extended warranty period as described on their web site. I'd got full details ready - serial numbers of the MBP and of the battery and all the information about the battery from System Profiler - which was really all a dealer could have checked. They agreed to send me a new battery for free and a pre-paid label for returning the old one: they wanted credit card details and, not unreasonably, will charge me if I don't return it. I got a couple of helpful emails from the guy I spoke to (in one of Apple's Indian call centres) withing two minutes of putting the phone down and an order reference quickly followed by a dispatch notification within ten minutes. I've been critical of Apple's service before, but this was exemplary.
It was pretty clear that my problem fitted into one of the categories listed in the url I gave in the previous post and I'm not sure that yours does, but it can't do any harm to ask.

I am new to portable macs. What is the battery capacity? How can I make it full?

Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

50% after that few load cycles & only 10 months sounds a bit bad.
First try resetting your PMU as follows:
    1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
    2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
    3. Wait 5 seconds.
    4. Press the Power button to restart the iBook.
    Then Calibrate your battery.
If that doesn't work I'd be inclined to contact Apple Service.

In all likelihood, you've been bit by a known ML problem.  You can read more in this 195 page thread.  Bottom line is that with so few cycles, you should take it to an Apple store and have it looked at - and possibly have the battery replaced.  Some people have had their logic boards or entire machines replaced.  But there doesn't seem to be a consisent theme that anyone can point to as being the cause.  In my case, I elected to return to Lion until I have more trust that Apple has solved this problem (which, BTW, not everyone encounters)
