Battery capacity dropping and changing constantly?

I recently purchased a MBP 13" a few days ago and downloaded coconut battery to check my battery capacity and it seems to fluctuate a bit. It has been approximately 5 days since I began using the computer. I haven't been keeping the display on the highest brightness (do sometimes, but only when plugged into the charger at home) and keep other power saver settings on but the battery is still at about 5570 mAh, is this good or bad? Coconut battery says this is approximately 96% of the designed 5770 capacity. It dropped down to 5536 just yesterday and has risen back to 5576 as of this post. Is this normal because my computer is so new and it can't exactly calculate how much it has, or am I draining the battery that heavily?
I use it for school daily, and return home with approximately a 35-50% charge (depending upon usage during the school day), and begin charging when it reaches approximately 20%. Should I be charging earlier than this? I know not to let it drop to critical levels such as 10%, but not sure when I should exactly start charing to maximize this batteries lifespan. Thank you for whomever answers!

The small fluctuations you're seeing in your battery's Full Charge Capacity are entirely normal and will continue, perhaps lessening somewhat as time passes. I still see fluctuations (up as well as down) of 2-3% in my two-year-old battery's capacity, though of course the overall trend is gradually downward. It began at 4805mAh (103% of its design capacity of 4650) right out of the box, and it has been reported as low as 4320. It's now at 4530 after 137 cycles (this battery is rated for 300 cycles, unlike yours which is rated for 1000). I don't check it but every couple of months, so it could very well have gone outside that range at times without my noticing. I suspect that part of the reported variation is due to calibration error (I occasionally go longer than I should between calibrations) and part is due to limited precision in the measurement. I just don't worry about it at all, and I recommend that you don't either.

  • MacBook Pro battery capacity dropped to 2%?!?!?!

    Hi Everyone
I've recently noticed my battery capacity has dropped DRAMATICALLY in the past month. It's the 2.0GHz quad-core i7 15 inch MacBook Pro, early 2011 model. It is 15 months old, however I bought it brand new (box not even opened) from an eBay seller on 16th June 2011. I always keep it plugged in and very rarely take it off the charge, only if I want to go and work in another room but don't want to bring the adaptor. I know that's not technically good for the battery but it can hardly be *terrible* can it?
I've noticed that the battery was getting very low and after reading a forum post somewhere I downloaded coconutBattery. A few weeks ago, it read that my battery capacity was 68%, which to me sounded pretty low. Then about a week ago I looked again and it read 37% and I knew something was definitely wrong. I check today and it's dropped to 2%!!!!! I would certainly expect some loss of capacity but surely not this so quickly?
I use the laptop on a desk with "cool balls" underneath to lift it up and provide it with a bit of ventillation to keep it from getting to hot. The magsafe charger has a small tear just under the aluminium head which I covered with black insulation tape as soon as I saw it. Would this be the reason the battery is dying so quickly?
I'm thinking I'm going to have to buy a new battery at some point but I don't want to spend £100 on one if it's just going to happen again!
    Thanks
ps. here's a screenshot of the coconutBattery window

Yes, you have to pay full price for it when purchsing it from Apple....
There are third party suppliers out there if you wish to buy cheaper ones but I'm not sure if they perform as good as the apple supplied battery...
    good luck

  • Connection drops and change of IP address

    Hi guys,
I've been having trouble with my broadband for some time. There is no issue with the speed, but my connection often drops, and as you can imagine this can be very annoying whilst gaming! There's nothing more annoying than being disconnected from a game of fifa (especially when winning!).
These connection drops happen almost every time the phone rings, and at other times seem completely random. Sometimes the phone will ring and the internet will not disconnect but most of the time it will. I've contacted BT and they advised me to change the filters, which I did with no result. So I contacted them again and they have arranged for a new router to be sent out.
Also I have noticed that my IP address changes every time I am disconnected, which causes problems with games which recognize the device you are playing on (namely RS and Gwars 2). This means I have to go into my email to verify my login every time I get a disconnect :/
So is there anything that I might be doing wrong on my end? Is there any way I can fix this?

  • Anyone has their battery capacity dropped considerably like me (MBP Retina)

2.5 month old macbook pro retina.
currently the capacity is less than 8000mAh (7950mAh) and is still dropping.
anyone has similar problem? and did apple replace you an intact battery? How is your replaced battery than the old one?

I ran some more diagnostics on the low battery situation and found Google Chrome to be the source of a high battery drain. Chrome wasn't an apparent battery drain source since the new significant energy consuming apps feature in OS X Mavericks also lists Safari when simply browing. To ascertain the relative magnitude of the battery drain from different browsers, I had to completely switch to using one or the other. With Safari, my battery life is in the range of 5.5 to 6 hours (browsing + intermittent high intensity apps use). This is marginally better than OS X Mountain Lion, but better nevertheless.
Complaint redacted. Looking forward to the next Google Chrome release that is compatible with OS X Mavericks.

  • My jetpack won't charge. I only use the cable that came with it. and by won't charge, I mean even when plugged in the battery keeps dropping and never goes up.

My MiFi jetpack 6620 doesn't charge. I've plugged it into the charger that comes with it, and only that charger. But nothing happens. The battery keeps getting drained. I first attempted when it was at 16%. After being on the charger a few hours, it dropped to 15%, then 14%. I'm currently at 12%. I've tried different outlets at different locations. And I've tested the charger cable on my phone and it charges that just fine. Which is more likely: the battery is defective or there is a problem with the jetpack itself? and the real kicker is that I've only had it for a week.

Happy Friday cjyoyomasta! I wanted to reach out to you to see if you received the assistance that you need with your jetpack. May I ask have you took the device to the store for assistance? If so, what was the results? If you can provie us with a status update then we can assist, if still needed.
    Thank you…

    Hi,
I have a 8 months 13-inch macbook aluminium with the following battery information
    Battery information:
    Cycles: 134
    Original Max capacity: 4100 mAh
    Max Battery charge: 2679mAh

How can get I support? Is there a way to have a battery replacement mailed?
    Thanks in advance

I just noticed I posted on the wrong category. Sorry for that.

  • How to INCREASE Battery Capacity

Just drop the advertising - I know that battery capacity  varies, and that the capacity of the phone battery - regardless of models, will degrade as the phone is used.
I contest the "specialists" to provide some straight simple guidelines to how one can treat a battery to increase the capacity.
That the layers gets closer and short-curcuits is a known reason. So, exposure to heat will make the substance that keep the layers apart into gas that escapes the battery. Now how can such a battery be fixed? In old days with NiCd we could freeze the battery to -36C, that would make the iodine to solid. if iodine is still used, this will still work. Other semiconductors needed more than -100C to regain state - but with access to liquid Nitrogen, that was fully possible. Maybe Ni is not so common, but freon is, and LPG (Butane/Propane liquified). A home freezer can at times go as low as -38C.
So, can charging in heat / cold change the capacity of the battery?
Other: If I completely drain the battery between every charge - will that improve it?
If I start to recharge it when it is 80% of capacity, and disconnect immediately and use everything, Bluetooth, WLAN - to drain it to 80% and the recharge - can I restore the good old capacity?
if the battery degrades to 10% of capacity, is it possible to restore it? How?
    Don't change anything that works.

That, and I've been reading to not constantly charge it, or leave it in at 100%. It can be charged too much from what I've seen. I've had mine since 2006 almost 2 years, and till recently left it charging all the time. Not sure that's been a good idea. This is Battery University website information...
gure 1: Permanent capacity loss of lithium-ion as a function of temperature and charge level.
High charge levels and elevated temperatures hasten permanent capacity loss. Improvements in chemistry have increased the storage performance of lithium-ion batteries.
The mentioning of limited service life on lithium-ion has caused concern in the battery industry and I will need to add some clarifications. Let me explain:
If someone asks how long we humans live, we would soon find out that the longevity varies according to life style and living conditions that exist in different countries. Similar conditions exist with the batteries, lithium-ion in particular. Since BatteryUniversity bases its information on the feedback from users as opposed to scientific information derived from a research lab, longevity results may differ from manufacturer' specifications. Let's briefly look at the various living conditions of the lithium-ion battery.
The worst condition is keeping a fully charged battery at elevated temperatures, which is the case with running laptop batteries. If used on main power, the battery inside a laptop will only last for 12-18 months. I must hasten to explain that the pack does not die suddenly but begins with reduced run-times.
The voltage level to which the cells are charged also plays an important role to longevity. For safety reasons, most lithium-ion cannot exceed 4.20 volts per cell. While a higher voltage boosts capacity, the disadvantage is lower cycle life. Figure 2 shows the cycle life as a function of charge voltage.

  • My battery capacity decreases per charge!!!

Hi guys I need help, I am very frustrated about this matter , This is my first macbook pro retine late 2013 the latest one out yet 4gb ram baseline model with the dubal core i5. I started playing LOL or League of Legends an online game a few weeks back.
When I did start I was completely hooked and played multiple hours even with the battery charger plugged in. The battery lost its total capacity from 6300 its about 6200 then it fell 6150 ok then I statred carying ok I LOVE MY MAC AND ITS BATTERY.
So i went like ok i will play max 40 mins per day, fine huh 1 time per charge cycle make sure the charge cycle is 20 hrs long I have been trying to do this more or less BUT EVEYTIME I PLAY THE GAME EVEN IF THE CHARGE drop is only 30% my total battery capacity drops.
I am checking this through MULTIPLE apps and every time i play the drop is bloody 0.5 percent and i  CANT TAKE IT and when i dont play on a chrge cycle there is NO DROP IN THE OVERALL capacity.
Note i take soo much care when i pay i charge it to 100 and keep it ice cold when  i play and its not plugged in. Any advice are the apps wrong is my capacity decresing are macs not meant for gaming or if i conture down this path will i have to eventully replace my battery just any adivce or thoughts on this matter will be VERY APPRECIATED!!!

When Taxing the system, Running it Hard as most all games do, it will draw power from both the AC charger and the battery at the same time.
The AC charger Apple supplies is not large enough to do both Power the system and charge the battery, or even keep the same charge on the battery, when the system is working hard.
As to the overall capacity of the battery that will go down with the increase of charge cycles.
What you are seeing is completely normal for all Mac notebook computers.

  • 13" MBP Battery Capacity

Anyone else seeing their battery capacity drop off?
I got my 13" MBP back in Mid June, and since then my battery capacity has declined to 95% (max capacity is now 5201mAh) with 49 cycles. I have calibrated it a couple of times new but it hasn't helped in any noticeable way.
The MBP does tend to live plugged in over night (and on) collecting tweets but then I used to do that with my old white MacBook without causing any problems to the battery.
At this rate of drop off I would be surprised if the battery readed its 1000 charge cycles at 80%

That's normal. The decline in battery capacity is not linear.

  • Macbook 13" Pro Retina turns off at 33% battery capacity

Today I found that my Macbook 13" pro Retina shut down suddenly at 33% battery capacity. And also, I checked the battery health, which was at 61% . The    last time I checked, it was at about 98%. The current usage when fully charged and unplugged is 2h30.
    Here's the screenshot:
I tried the SCM and PRAM,NVRAM reset but nothing happened. As I just purchased this Macbook in January, I dont think that the battery "degrades" this fast.
Please tell me how to fix it or to improve the current max capacity.
    Thank you all !

Take it in for repair/replacement. The device has a one year warranty.

  • Just got my iPad 2 three days ago and noticed the battery life drops faster than I expected at least compared to the others ones around

Just got my iPad 2 three days ago and noticed the battery life drops faster than I expected at least compared to the others ones around, please I need to know the cause and how to effect necessary changes that will prolong the battery life as I have gone through the settings which includes turning off the push notifications, reduce brightness and so on but that doesn't seem to help much.

    FYI
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Battery power drops constantly/randomly from nearly full to under 10%.

I have the Blackberry Torch 9800 and for the last while my battery will constantly randomly drop to almost dead. If I remove the battery it usually goes back up and sometimes it's okay for the rest of the day or for a few days, while some days it does it 2-3 times every hour to the point it basically needs to be left plugged in. Is there any way to stop this from happening? Thanks.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Sometimes, there is a defect...such must be expected with devices designed and built by humans. If that is a possibility, you should of course seek warranty support (if you remain in your warranty period) from your mobile service provider, original place of purchase, or authorized service center -- it varies by region, but you should have received, when you purchased, information about your specific warranty coverage along with the manner of utilizing warranty support/service. There also might be some good reading here:
    http://us.blackberry.com/legal/handheld-limited-warranty.html
Sometimes, the battery goes bad...to test, this sequence is needed:
Obtain a known good and already fully charged additional battery...use it in your BB and see what happens
Obtain access to a known good and identical BB...use your battery in it and see what happens
The results of this will indicate if it's your BB or your battery that has the problem.
If it is the BB that is the cause, it could perhaps be the OS...and a clean OS reload/update could help things. You can investigate if there are newer OS levels via the official download portal:

  • Battery Capacity dramatic drop overnight

My power adapter was behaving stragely, so I took my battery out and put it back in. According to coconutBattery, my battery was at 92% of orig. capacity yesterday, and only 84% today! I don't know when excactly the change took place, but it seems very mysterious and troubling. Any idea what could have caused this?
    Thanks!

Hi. If you haven't calibrated your battery yet, now would be a good time to do so. Also, it would be better to read the info off system profiler. Check that and see if the same it has the same info. Also, resetting the SMC could help. Here are the links.
