Battery charge level stays at 0% even when plugged in

I've had my Macbook for almost a year. A few days ago it started acting up, randomly changing the display resolution on me once after sleep mode. Now the problem is that the battery seems to not be working properly. It always stays at 0% even if it's charging, but sometimes the battery symbol is just an X. If I disconnect the charger for even a few seconds it either shuts down or goes to sleep as if it has zero battery left. If it's in sleep mode and I disconnect the cord, it shuts down. Here's my battery information; the thing is, it is charging currently, and it should be fully charged, seeing as I've had it plugged in for nearly three days straight.

Hi albertctka,
You can try resetting the SMC- http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411
If that doesn't work the next option would be to try and get your hands on another battery for "testing" purposes. If the new battery works, then it's a battery issue. If the new battery doesn't work then it's possibly an issue with the cabling inside the machine which communicates between the logic board and battery.

    Hello cass528,
I would be concerned too if my MacBook Air would not power on.  I recommend following the steps in this article when experiencing an issue like this:

  • Can a bad battery affect my MBP's performance, even when plugged in?

Well, as the title says... my battery status says "Service Battery", and although I know the instructions are simple ("dude, take your laptop's battery for servicing!"), a few months ago my financial situation changed, I'm trying to adjust the budget as much as I can for now, and I'm not sure I can afford to spend much money at the moment.
The thing is, my laptop's performance has been slowly getting worse all the time. at first, it was only with resource-intensive applications, but lately, even having more than 5 tabs open in Chrome gets the system all laggy. Now, as I've read on other threads talking about batteries being in bad shape, I would assume that, if the system can't draw much power, it can't work as hard, so a bad battery could be the culprit of such performance. However, if my laptop's plugged in, shouldn't it be drawing power straight from the outlet, hence being able to get all the juice it needs to feed both the 9400M & 9600M GT?
Ah! by the way, the info I guess I shouldn't post this without: It's a Macbook Pro 5.3, purchased in March 2010. This is System Profiler's Power section info:

Not necessarily, if the battery is trying gobble some power, as the bad batt is still in the charge/power circut. 446 cycles is quite a bit, and not a bad run, it also depends on how it has been used.
I would replace it ASAP as it is possible that it may create/cause more severe issues. A new battery is less $$ than more serious damage that could possibly result from leaving it in.

  • I had switches off my iPhone 5 at around 20 percent battery next morning I was not able to switch it on. I tried to get it charged but it didn't showed any sign of charging even when plugged in for about 2 hours. I had to take it to apple care centre

I had switches off my iPhone 5 at around 20 percent battery next morning I was not able to switch it on. I tried to get it charged but it didn't showed any sign of charging even when plugged in for about 2 hours. I had to take it to apple care centre but they refused to repair it after confirming the problem with the device as it was out of warranty and asked me to get it replaced for INR 22500. I got it repaired outside but after that also if I switch it off in the same situation it again happens and I have to take it for repair it has happened 3 times after that. Is it a inherent problem in iPhone that it uses battery even when switched off and if in that case battery drain out then refuse to get charged because this is the scenario i have experienced every time?

Apple told you it was unrepairable.... You had it serviced by an unauthorized party. It's now no longer eligible for out of warranty replacement by Apple.
There's really nothing else we can say about it. Find a competent 3rd party repair shop or buy a new one.

  • Will dead battery stop netbook g62 from booting up even when plugged into the mains

Had the battery warning (last week)
did not replace now will not boot up even when plugged into the mains.  Is this likely to stop booting or just a case of more than one thing wrong at the same time. New battery expensive to buy if it is likely to be something else wrong.

A battery can be so dead it will keep the laptop from powering on fully when the dead cells suck up too much of the power. Will it turn on with "mains" connected but battery removed?

  • Urgent- Zen X-Fi not switching on even when plugged in

I left my Zen X-fi in the glove box of my car for two nights and when I retrieved it today it will not switch on, even when plugged into the computer via USB or through my mains adaptor . I have tried using the reset button and tried to recovery it using recovery mode, but that is not working. I am going on holiday in two days and I need it fixed urgently. Any help please?

**** it! After ordering a new battery at my own expense and nearly two hours carefully disassembling the device and soldering a new battery on, my worst fears were confirmed because the device still isn't working. It looks like the player has well and truly died and there appears to be nothing more I can do to fix it.
Looks like I will have to fork out for a new device. Any suggestions on what model I should go for?

My phone turned off over night and will not turn back on even when plugged in. Is there anything that I can do?

If you've left the phone plugged in for at least a half-hour with no results, then try holding power and home buttons simultaneously to do a soft reset (settings) only. If that doesn't work, try seeing if iTunes will recognize the device and let the computer charge the device.

Screen goes dim when processor working - even when plugged to mains power.

Any ideas - a hardware problem? Back to Mac?

If you go to System Preferences > Energy Saver, the is a checkbox under the "options" tab that says, "Automatically reduce the brightness of the display before display sleep." On my new MBP (10.5.1), this was "on" by default. Try unchecking it and see if it helps.

  • I told my wireless network to forget two airport expresses so that I could rename them.  Now the network does not see them even when plugged in about 10 feet away from the airport extreme base station.  Does "forget" mean forever?  How to reset?

I told my wireless network to forget two airport expresses 1 1st gen, 1 2nd gen so that I could rename them.  Now the network does not see them even when plugged in about 10 feet away from the airport extreme base station.  The network does recognize a totally new 2nd gen express.  Does "forget" mean forever?  How to reset?

The network does recognize a totally new 2nd gen express.
Then, it sounds like you have already reset the 2nd Gen Express, and now you need to set it up again, like you did the first time. Only, this time, assign the device name that you want to the AirPort Express.
Do NOT use the name that Apple suggests.....which will be something goofy like........Sueswimsf's Red Apple AirPort Express
    Assign a simple name.....something like     2ndGenExpress

  • Battery charge dropping even when plugged in on Satellite series

I've got a satellite laptop and even though it recognises the power adaptor when plugged in, and the icon in the task bar states 'charging', the percentage of the battery charge appears to be dropping.
This is only whilst the laptop is on, as it does seem to charge the battery when switched off.
I didn't think it used any battery power whilst plugged in, so I'm confused as to not only why the battery doesn't seem to be charging, but also why the battery charge appears to be dropping when the laptop shouldn't be using it anyway.
    Any help appreciated!

    Hi there,
i have seen this problem on my own laptops in the past. even if the laptop is charging, the battery does seem to be dropping in charge.
This indicates that the life of the battery is approaching its end, as there are a limited number of charge cycles for a battery before it eventually dies.
Also when you have the computer turned off charge is still being lost at a considerable rate, as the battery is well, 'dying'.
You cannot do anything about this except to buy a new replacement battery for your laptop from an authorised Toshiba repair centre. this should answer your question.
