Battery charges when asleep but will NOT charge while awake

Hello -
By battery will charge when off/asleep but will not charge while awake. It just slowly drains to nothing and dies even though adapter is plugged in. magsafe adapter light is green when open/on and orange when off/asleep and lights on battery indicate charging while in the latter state. still using stock battery that came with computer when I got it a few years ago, so it's not new by any means, but when fully charged lasts as long as it used to. I would think maybe charger is issue, but it DOES charge, just not while awake. not sure why computer wouldn't still work correctly while plugged in if in battery indicator it says power source is "power adapter," but its not. I have tried resetting PMU and calibrating battery. the combo of the two seemed to work when having issue a few months ago, but it just started doing it again. frustrating because once it dies I have to wait several hours until its fully charged again, so it cramps the workflow... any ideas? battery info from profiler below.
Cheers,
Ian

Scott - Your answer ultimately led me to the answer, albeit months later, after much internal deliberation and some trial and error... thanks!
Ruled out battery (as crazy as that sounds - it's had a bajillion cycles) as it didn't make sense that battery would charge but wouldn't work while awake. I have a friend whose battery is completely shot and his still works as long as magsafe is plugged in, and mine wouldn't even do that. tried another adapter and that worked. then tried mine in a different plug. so in the end, turns out I had a bum powerstrip... mag safe / battery recharge works properly when just plugged in somewhere different.
So no need to buy a new charger or battery (yet!)
thanks to all,
Ian

I was advised to buy a new charger last week and have just been advised by an apple employee to buy a new battery for my MacBook 2009 and i am having the same issue as my old battery.
The Mac reconognises the battery but will not charge or run off the battery.
Just spent £150 in total on new charger and battery but still having the same problem as before.
I have downloaded the firmware update but my Mac is already running the latest software.
    Regards

Sometimes my iPad1 locks up and has the flat battery graphic after charging all night, but will not work until you disconnect the charger, then it reboots and the battery is fully charged and works normally.
It has only happened for the last month or so
Also, sometimes it drops out of apps, ie facebook etc. just like you have hit the stop button

Who replaced the battery? If it wasn't Apple the replacement is probably bad also. Either that, or the logic board is bad.

You'll want to reset your SMC (System Management Controller). Instructions are simple:

  • IPod touch recognizes it is plugged in and has low battery but will not charge no matter what it is connected to! Suggestions????

After a year of owning my iPod touch 4g it suddenly stopped charging on my computer and outlet addapter.  It still shows the two pronged plug icon that recognizes the iPod is connected to something but even as the battery level goes below twenty percent it will not charge. Still functions well and even connects to iTunes.

If it is still under warrenty which you can find out from here or if you know it's under one year old bring it to the Apple Store.

    - See:

    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.

  • Itouch will charge on wall charger, but will not charge or show up when I plug it into the computer. All I get is a double beep and nothing happens. I uninstalled and re installed itunes. I shut down the computer and shut down the itouch. What next?

I touch will not charge or show up on the computer. It charges on the wall charger. I uninstalled and re-installed itunes and I also restarted the itouch and the computer. What next?

Play it safe with the charging.  Use the wall charger for at least an hour and then connect to the computer.  If iTunes still denies that it exists, go here:

This is extremely frustrating not only can I not back up my iPhone but I also can not update its OS etc.

Have you tried other USB Sockets on the MBP?
Have you tried other devices in these USB sockets?, do these work?

  • TS2771 Ipod connects to tv, but will not charge or sync

My ipod was charging fine on my drive home. I connected it to my tv with the video cable and was watching netflix. Then I got a message that the battery was at less than 20%, even though the ipod had been connected to the wall charger the entire time I was watching.
I've tried every charger, every cable, every dock, and every computer I own now, and it will not charge with any of them. Neither my desktop or laptop will recognize that it is connected. The ipod never shows that it is connected or charging. I tried pushing the power & home buttons to reset it and still have the same problem. The reset made no difference. And I'm low on power so there's not much else I can do before it completely runs out of charge.
Any idea why it would give out on me so suddenly, or what I can do to fix it?

  • Battery works perfectly fine but does not charge!! (HP Probook 4530s)

    Hi
This has been happening for the past couple of days or so. My laptop works perfectly fine on the battery but when I plug in the charger, it says "Plugged in, charging" but the battery does NOT get charged. I ran HP Battery Check and got the following results in the charging and discharging situations:
I will be very thankful for any help you can offer!

Thank you for the reply Kalt. I have some questions:
    1. How do I perform a hard reset of the BIOS on this laptop?
    2. The battery does not even charge when the laptop is switched off. Which makes me think that it might not be a BIOS issue because when the laptop is off, the battery should charge on A/C power right?
    3. The battery charging LED does turn "orange" which means it is charging... but the battery doesn't get charged. Furthermore, until 2 days ago the battery was still lasting at least 2-3 hours on a full charge. Do you think that the issue is not with the battery but maybe the charging circuit in the motherboard has malfunctioned?
    I appreciate your help

  • I have my iphone plugged in, it shows that it is connected but will not charge. what can i do?

Yesterday when I got up I noticed my phone did not charge the night before. I unplugged it and tryed a different outlet, and a different plug and my computer. None worked. I went to verizon they told me nothing can be done but to get a new phone. This morning I took a soft brush and a little bit of alcohol and now it is reconizing the charger but not charging.  What can I do?

Maybe it is charging but battery meter is not updating. Reset, hold both home and power buttons until the iPhone restarts itself, ignore the "slide to power off". See if it seems to be charging now, or is fully charged. If still not charging, most likely the damage that the dock experienced possibly killed the battery. Battery replacement would be my next step.

  • Macbook pro charger powers my macbook but will not charge it

This is the third charger I've had for my Macbook pro, but this time my problem is slightly different. In the past my charger has completely died out (would not connect to Macbook to charge). Currently when I plug my charger in, the Macbook recognizes that it's plugged in and allows it to power on, but fails to charge at all. It maintains power as long as the charger is connected but never charges. Please help!

Check your cycle count and see if you've exceeded the limit.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1519
If so, it's probably dead. If not, well, it's still probably dead.
If you can, try another charger and see if it takes a charge.
