Battery died while updating to OS X 10.5.2, Now won't boot!

Dear all,
Last night I went to update my PowerBook from 10.5.1 to 10.5.2, along with a couple of other updates that Software Update had downloaded. Half way through the installation my battery died, and now with the mains plugged in, the computer won't boot at all. I get the initial white screen with they grey apple logo in the middle and a spinning loading icon.
Is there anything I can do to revert it and get it to boot up?
I have a time machine backup from about a week ago, but have some work I did yesterday I would really rather not lose if at all possible!
Many thanks in advance,
Jude

Lesson learned: never update on battery.
If you can boot your computer with your OS disc, and if you have enough free hard drive space, you can perform an Archive and Install. This way you lose nothing but the 90-180 minutes it will take for the OS to install.
If it won't boot off the CD or you lack the drive space for an archive and install find another Mac user and mount your computer's drive on their computer using FW target disk mode.

  • My battery died while I was powering down my computer. Now I can't login. Please help?!

    Hi,
I was in the process of powering down my computer when the battery ran out of power. Now after I have typed my password  to login and pressed Return nothing happens. I can move the mouse but everything else freezes up and I can't click on anything. The only thing I can do is to manually power it down with the power-button. I am using Time Machine and therefore I re-installed a copy that was one week old but the same problem still exists.
    What do I do now?
I have the first version of Macbook with the aluminum body.
    Thanks for the help!

I am not sure how you re-installed from Time Machine, if you can't click on anything?  Anyway, with the power chord connected (since the battery is flat), try an SMC reset as described in the link.

If this doesn't improve the situation, I would suggest holding the Option key during a restart and selecting the Recovery partition, from where you can verify the disk and repair permissions and ultimately to do a re-instal of Lion if necessary.

  • Battery died while installing Mavericks. Installation corrupted. Wont boot or resume install.

    Greetings,
A friend just called in a panic. He updated to Mavericks without plugging his MBP in. The battery died while updating and the computer won't boot into OS. It boots back into the installer but won't continue. Disk utility cant repair it. Any idea of how to help him? (he has no backup)
I may have him ship it to me, if it mounts on desktop I'll clone it, reinstal Mavericks, migrate his data.
What generally gets corrupted when a Mavericks installation is abruptly cut short?
Is there anything else to have him try before he ships it?

If his Mac is capable of it, I'd try Internet Recovery.

  • WinXP booted after BIOS update cleared RAID setting, now won't boot in RAID mode

I updated the P965 Platinum BIOS to 1.7 and my system stopped booting.  After much experimentation I discovered it would boot if I unplugged the monitor and mouse, so I was able to "upgrade" to 1.6, and it's working again.  However, the first time it booted blind with 1.7 it got all the way to Windows before I realized what happened.
My system was set up with a RAID1 pair, but the BIOS upgrade cleared the SATA mode to IDE, and it booted Windows before I changed it back.  Now Windows won't boot when I set it to RAID.  It complains <windows>/system32/hal.dll is missing or corrupt.  It seems to work (mostly) when I put it back to IDE mode.  How do I get it back to RAID1?

  • System Updates, Now Won't Boot

I did four recommended system updates yesterday, two being Security and ITunes. Now my MacBook won't boot, even in Safe Boot mode or from the disk. Just the blue screen and the circle. I have it connected to another computer so I can see and get into the HD that won't boot but I'm not sure how to bring it back without deleting other files that have nothing to do with it. I'd like to return my system to how it was before I did those updates. It does not have TimeMachine. Is there any way to return to "yesterday" before the updates?
    Thanks from Gina

You won't be able to return to the "yesterday" configuration unless you have a backup.
I assume you are using Target Disk mode to connect the MacBook to another Mac. If so, use Disk Utility on the other Mac to run the following: first Repair Disk Permissions. If that doesn't correct the problem, then run First Aid.

there is basically one more thing you can do...
    1) Remove the battery, and then wait for about 20 min or so before putting it back
    2) Press and hold these three keys together -Green dial key, Star key[*], Three key [3]
    3) switch ON the phone.
    4) Do not let go the three keys until you see the WELCOME screen displayed and just let it complete the boot process
and then try to run NSU again, if that doesnt help then run to the nearest Nokia Care Point

  • IPhone died while updating?

I Updated my iPhone 3 awhile back.. Not iOS 7 but b4 that. After letting me go through the whole thing.. It totally died. After talking to iTunes support and stores around the city I finally got an honest answer from a guy from the Source. He said Apple let's you update on purpose so it WILL died therefore needing to go out and buy a new phone. This was only kept so my son could use it for games after I got my new phone. Is this true??

I ended up taking my phone to the Apple store. He plugged my phone into his computer and it restored right away. He said if I would have tried a different computer it would have worked for me at home.

  • Battery died while importing iPhoto video thumbnails, project won't play

I had recently added some new videos from my digital camera to iPhoto. Opening iMovie, it prompts to create thumbnails. I said yes and it said it would take about 15 minutes. My battery was low, but it looked like it would finish fine. I came back a few minutes later and the computer was off.
When I powered up again to charge, the iMovie thumbnail processing window was still up but hadn't finished. It appeared to have finished. The problem is that now a project I had completed a month ago won't play back properly. The thumbnails have a little yellow exclamation mark and flicker on/off gray. Trying to play the video usually crashes iMovie now, and it only plays back in short spurts.
My project appears to be corrupt or something. Is there a way to recover? Can I delete bad thumbnails from somewhere through Finder?

  • Computer died while updating itunes now it is gone

how can I get it back?

To use itunes to update your iphone you should first ensure you have the most recent iTunes version. Once this version is downloaded to your computer, you will then need to check to see that all anti-spyware programs are uninstalled from a Windows OS you may be using. If you are using a Windows OS that is likely why the itunes crashed (or missing an itunes update) Windows antispyware will stop the download of the necessary file to do the updates to your apple device.
    Good luck.

  • IPad battery died while in the middle of composing important email. Help recovering!

    NEEDING HELP!
I have been up since 6AM carefully composing a VERY important email on my iPad. I was literally DONE and about to press send...when my iPad DIED on me. I had it plugged in and charging...or I thought I did. The outlet wasn't working. Bless it.
Has anyone else had this happen to them?
Or can anyone help me recover the email (which I did not save, as I was done and about to send.)
ANY advice on how to recover it would be appreciated.
(BTW, I was using an iPad 4.)

Unless your email account is an IMAP account and the draft was saved on the server, the email is gone now and cannot be retrieved. Emails are not contained in the backup, so even if you did backup the iPad before it died, you still would not be able to recover the email.

  • After updating to Lion 10.7.2 System now hangs on boot

I downloaded and installed Lion 10.7.2 update last night onto my MacBook Pro. The update appeared to download ok after quite some time, but during the install the system appeared to hang transfering files. I left the system installing over night, but when I looked at it this morning the update had not completed and I was not getting any responce from the system at all.
Now when I reboot the system I get the Apple logo with the status simbol pinning, but thats it. I have booted into Verbose mode and it looks as if the boot is hangs on the BlueTooth driver install.
I can get into the Mac OS X Utilities and was thinking of reinstlling the MAC OS, but am unsure about this as I don't know if this will erase all my data.
I am fairly new to Mac trouble shooting so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    John

Sure, Here is a more detailed list of steps that I performed.
    1) Prior to issue, I had a bootable external drive with MacOS 10.7 on it. It was not connected during upgrade.
    2) After apply 10.7.2 upgrade on my internal drive, unable to boot post upgrade
    3) Plugged external drive into Mac, rebooted Mac, holding down Option key for list of boot drives, selected external drive
    4) From OS running on external drive, launched safari, went to apple support, downloads, macos, and downloaded 10.7.2 combo updater.
    5) After download completed, mounted Combo Update disk image, double click update installer
    6) Agree to license, selected internal drive as target for installation
    7) After combo upgrade install finished, started control panel, selected startup disk, selected internal drive and clicked reboot.
    8) System boot fine from internal drive.

  • Mac Mini Core 2 Duo died and now won't boot - any help or advice appreciated...

    Hi, all
I have a core 2 duo Mac Mini (possibly a 2008 model?) which has been retro-fitted with a superdrive at some point in its life and was running Lion.
It used to be left running 24/7, but one day I returned to find it powered down and it will not boot up at all now. Applying power and then pressing the power button results in the cpu fan starting, and the HD spinning up - the white power indicator lights steady, but other than that there is no sign of life - no noises, beeps, no display, nothing.
I'm not averse to getting the lid off (I've opened up a fair few mini's before ) so any suggestions as to what my next step should be?
As an aside, the Intel minis have a small push button on the logic board, about half-way down the right hand side - what is this for?
Many thanks in advance for any help and advice you may be able to offer.
    O.

    Thanks for your reply, mooblie...
I have tried the SMC reset (which, unless I have misunderstood occurs as a result of removing all power for a while then reconnecting the psu and turning on as normal after a few seconds delay) with no luck.
The PRAM reset is a bit of a problem, though, as I do not appear to have any keyboard function - I'm using an aluminium Apple keyboard and mighty mouse (both are the wired variety, plugged into separate USB ports), but the 'boot' process doesn't appear to get far enough to enable operationof the keyboard (shift lock light doesn't light if appropriate key pressed), so I can't give it the 4-finger death grip at power up.   The mouse illuminates, and I've tried all 4 USB ports, BTW...
I forgot to add to the previous post that there is 2GB RAM fitted, and both Bluetooth and Airport.
    O.
