Battery discharges while its OFF

I am a new Apple user. I've been a programmer on windows for more than 8 years, and I am really happy for switching over to macs.
3 weeks ago i bought a PB G4 768 RAM, combo and updated the mac os to 10.4.3 immediately. The problem I encountered is the following. I charge the battery to 100%.
I disconnect the charger. I shut it off. After about 10-15 hours, i turn on the computer, to find that its up to 90%. It lost 10% in about 15 hours. I discharge completely the battery, charge it again, check the battery lights (on the battery, and they show the battery is full, i disconnect the charger, turn it off. in 3 days i turn it back on to find that its down to 40%.
(bare with me here) I charge the battery, (again), i take it off the laptop. In three days i plug it back and it shows 99% (it didnt lose basically any charge)
my question... WHAT IS GOING ON HERE? My laptop while its off consumes so much battery?
I tried the PMU reset, PRAM etc. ITs a pleasure to use the PB but these issues make me think twice about my purchase.

coconut battery will not run on my powerbook. it will crash and an email has been sent to apple with the log.
Back to my issue. What i fear the most is that i dont know if its a hardware issue or software issue. (10.4.3)
The laptop is not 'sleeping', but its shut off and the discharge continues as if it was asleep i guess. But its off.
The log from my system settings->power... is

I already asked the reseller here to exchange my battery, but my fear is what if this is not the problem. Could it be leaking power even when its off? How does one solve such issues...

Hi, lordanis, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Since your new Powerbook is Aluminum, not Titanium, I suggest reposting your question in the 15" Aluminum PB Power and Battery discussion area, where others who have similar hardware will see it. You might also consider calling AppleCare under your warranty coverage and see what they say about your battery. Your experience certainly doesn't sound normal to me, and doesn't match mine with any of the several Powerbooks I've owned. Good luck.

  • Does the iTouch battery discharge while it is turned off?

I've fully charged my 32 GB iTouch and then not used it for several days. When I turn it on the battery is almost dead. Why is the battery discharging while it is off? How can I stop this?

This issue is revisited in several threads on this forum. You can read a myriad of theories but to my estimation, the only real answer can be found in [this thread|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11987618#11987618|Th e sad truth about iPod/iPhone battery life].
It basically boils down to using iTunes to perform the "Restore" to factory settings.
The fact of the matter is that it could be WiFi, Notifications, multi-tasking (even if 2nd Gen iPods do support it) or a thousand other things. The only thing I can save for sure is that there are deep, system level settings that are either corrupt or, most likely, obsolete. Settings that vary so widely from user to user that the only one can be certain that they have all been eliminated is to flush them all and start over.
Not a very scientific solution, but an effective one.
If you find this suggestion ludicrous and unreasonable, feel free to read my other posts on the topic. You'll find me to be a confederate.

  • Is it alright to charge iPhone while its off?

It usually takes approximately 2hours to charge my battery drained iPhone(4s). I'm wondering if I shut it down while charging would lessen the number of hours of charging. My concern is, if ever its system have a software/hardware that would prevent it from overcharging, still work while its off.
Same question goes to other iPhone models and all iPod and iPad generations.

There is no issue with overcharging. When the battery reaches 100%, the charge cycle stops. This applies to ALL iDevices, as they all use lithium based batteries.

  • Unusual Battery discharge while charging ?

Yesterday , i had the ac adapter plugged in to my notebook (yes it was put in properly)
but,the battery kept on discharging :/
i noticed it just when i was going to power it off
the battery sign up there said discharging , the battery level said (3% left),the battery sign was red
I checked the socket etc ,everything was fine,
    i waited a minute,battery level was now 1.5 %
thought i'd deal with it today,
however ,today the battery seems fine
    its charging alright,(atm 15.7 %)
any idea what would have caused this ?

But, it seems that the battery will go from down from 100% even when plugged in(right now it says 72%...and will keep going down until I put it to sleep). Also, when the battery is not fully charged from being unplugged for awhile, it won't charge when the computer is on (green on magsafe light). This has only started happening last month or so and seems like very abnormal behavior.
I've owned the mac for a little over 2 years, and it has always made faint noises, but the buzzing is new--it definitely doesn't sound like a fan. It only happens when the AC is plugged in.

  • Battery Loss While Powered Off

I have a 3rd Gen iPad (64 GB, 3G) that I started using in August 2013 (It was brand new at the time, straight out of the box).
I didn't have many battery issues while iOS 6 was still out. I noticed after iOS 7 came out, that the battery drained quicker than it had before so I turned almost all of the fancy new features because longevity is my main goal.
After the iOS 7 update, I've noticed that when turning on the iPad after I turn it off (as in hold down the lock button and swipe the power icon, screen goes black) I lose battery life. One day, after leaving the iPad off for 12 hours, I went from 60% battery to about 30%. Another night, when I turned it off, it went from about 70% to 40%.
This doesn't quite make sense to me. I know that if I just lock it and put the display to sleep that it continues running in the background and that is the cause of the battery drain. By turning off the iPad, I am somehow using more battery than if I had just locked it.

i just called Apple- and this is what they said-
even though the screen in black, the light is off, the machine has stopped humming-
"macbooks take longer to shut down, so wait 5 seconds after screen is black and then shut the lid"
i am going to try this, but just to be sure, i wait a whole 5 minutes before closing the lid.
Apple person lead me through resetting (something- cant remember the name but is wasnt P- something it was like "resetting Controls" or something with a C)
    it was easy and fast
    1) shut down compu
    2) unplug all cables from compu
    3) take out the battery (turn machine over, turn circle/key thingy with coin)
    4) hold power button down for 5 seconds
    5) put battery back in
    6) turn compu back on
Apple person gave me her e mail to write if the problem should happen again.
i will experiment and let you know what happens

  • Battery discharges when turned off

    Hello!
Ever since I have updated my device software I experience the following problem.
Whenever I turn off my BlackBerry (8310) it appears to be turned off. However when I want to turn it back on (most often in the morning) it seems to be dead. When I plug it into the wall to recharge it, the battery symbol comes on. Obviously this means the battery was completely dead.
    Can someone help me??
    Thanks a lot!
    Patrick.

That's strange. In some times, when there is high humidity level the battery discharges faster than usual. But anyway it is too fast.
    Check this article:
    http://www.blackberrynews.com/2008/05/20/battery-use-tips-for-your-maximum-battery-life/
And consider the battery replacement. That is not ok when battery discharges too fast with turned off device.

    Hi @Elielb ,
I understand that you have the  hp split x2 13m-10.  After turning it off and leaving it docked for 2 days the second battery shows only 47%.  You have tested both batteries and they are fine.
I know you tested the batteries, did you also callibrate them?

  • LG Extravert battery discharging while plugged in.

I got a new LG Extravert about two or three months ago.  I use the phone only for texting and calls.  I have no apps and don't use the internet.  Whenever I plug my phone in to charge it, though, it discharges until it turns off and only then charges completely.  This doesn't work for me, as I charge it at different times during the day, and I can be waiting for a call and then miss it because my phone has turned itself off after draining its own battery.  I've tried charging it both with the cord that my phone came with as well as the old cord from my old LG Env3 touch.  The battery maintains its charge just fine, and usually lasts at least a few days under heavy use, and up to a week with light use.  Like I said, I don't use the internet or apps, and so I'm not draining battery with any of those common culprits.
Everything I've seen on this from looking around the internet has been with iphones or droids; I haven't been able to find anything like this with any phones similar to mine.  Does anyone know what might be going on?
    Thanks,
    Kira

        PLZone,
Oh goodness, I am so sorry to hear your phone isn't working as it should be. How long is your battery lasting? Is your software up to date? Your device is still under warranty so it can be replaced under warranty as long as it does not have any physical or water damage, but it would be with the same make and model.

  • Yoga Tablet 10 battery discharge when turned off

I am now on to my second Yoga Tablet 10 in 15 days having returned the first one to the supplier for refund. The replacement I have purchased seams to have one of the problems I had before.
When Powered off using the pop up  ' power off' tab the tablet appears to switch itself off however when the tablet was turned off the battery was 89% and when turned back on 6 hours later the battery was only 49%. When the tablet is turned off it is left in stand mode.
On the first yoga tablet I had it did this twice and then would not charge or boot.
Has anyone else experienced this as a problem ?

    Hiya all,
Having exactly the same problem. Here is the sequence of events in my case:
    1. Got my first Yoga 10 beginning of March - returned to Argos after the weekend due to dead pixels on the display.(not relevant but worth mentioning ;-) )
    2. Got my second Yoga 10. Tablet manufactured end of Oct 2013. Downloaded the first update of software (approx. 150mb). No problem. Worked for a week.
    3. Then second update was available (approx. 15mb). Did that too. Tablet worked fine for a day - literally turned it on once and then turned it off.
    3. After that the thing went into Meta Mode itself when I want it to use it. Tried the power button and volume up. Got as far as the menu. Reboot didn’t work, actually nothing work.
    4. So I flashed the Rom (using directions from this forum). Got it working back again but I am having now battery problem. It gets discharged when the tablet is off. Sounds familiar? ;-))
What I have notice is when you trying to turn it on (should take approx. 4 secs for tablet to vibrate and start booting) takes more than 10 second to start booting. This is indicator that most likely your battery is discharging itself while the tablet is off.
And another funny thing - last week my tablet actually behaved normally for a while. For day and the half it didn’t lose any % of battery while being switched off and took it only 4 second to start booting. So, I thought things got fixed magically LOL. Well, they didn’t. Back to square 1. Oh, if you keep tablet in standby, the battery is not discharging itself, but that is not a solution....right?
What is most annoying is the fact that there seems to be a connection between the thing going into Meta mode after the update/s and the problem with the battery. Too many users are reporting this fact / facts and I am sure Lenovo knows about it but where is the solution?
Now, I think it is time to return the thing and get the money (no guarantee or just hope that Lenovo is working on the solution.
Very disappointed customer. Lenovo get your act together ASAP.

  • Portege R200 - Battery discharges when turned off

Hi purchased a Toshiba R200 in Australia about 2-3 months ago with the standard battery and the extended battery. My problem is that even when I turn the machine off the battery continues to discharge (i.e. it is not hibernating nor is it suspended). For example I left the computer off power for 4 days and did not touch it. When I came back and used it the main battery had dropped to 60% and the extended battery had also dropped to around 60% (both were full when I left). It looses about 10% per day. I've never experienced this before in the 5 dell/toshiba notebooks I've had before.
It can't be my usage of the batteries because I rarely use the machine away from its power adapter. At most the batteries have experienced maybe 10 full charge/discharge cycles since I've had it. Also if I do run on battery power I will get around 7-8 hours of battery with the main and extended battery (which is normal) so it doesn't seem like 'memory effect' from the battery.
I'm trying to disconnect the batteries from the computer for a few days to check if it is the battery or the computer, however I just wanted to find out if anyone has any ideas or experiences with this problem?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
Believe me it is normal. At my notebook happened the same thing. Over night there is deficit of 3 5% of battery capacity. Dont worry about it. Only what you can do is to do something about maximizing battery life.
For Nickel Metal Hydride batteries (NiMH) the battery will better hold a charge if allowed to discharge at least once a week. The chemical reactions that correspond to charge and discharge in a rechargeable battery should occur to obtain the maximum number of charge/discharge cycles in the battery.
It is not necessary to remove the battery from the computer during the week when it is on AC power.
Google a little bit around. You can find a lot of useful information about notebook-battery.
On this forum you can find similar discussions and many users have reported about this known issue. I just hope that you have charged the battery on the right way like described in users manuals.
    Bye

  • Discharging while Charging.

Since the 3.1 update, I have noticed on occasion that my phones battery discharges while it is sitting in a cradle "charging." I am doing nothing app wise and have all the suggested "Commonsense" (from my favorite support page ever: http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html ) rules except for turning off 3G or simply turning the iphone off totally and putting it in a drawer or using it as a paper weight.
It has happened about 2 dozen times since the upgrade. I am in a building that gets no cell reception, and notice that all of a sudden, I am getting 3G and then the battery starts to discharge. It gets down to 70% and then 3g goes away and it starts to charge again. It just happened at 12:15 CST and noticed that it happens in the morning at around 10 AM CST as well. I do not have any alarm set for this time, or email downloads, or any scheduled task running at this time.
Has anyone else had this issue?
yeah, I know, turn off 3g, but why should I? It is a 3g phone and we should be able to use 3g on a 3g phone. If we cannot use 3g on this phone, we should get some money back for shelling out 3g type money for it.

If you don't have cellular reception inside a building you are in - 3G or otherwise or it is very sporadic due to the building structure, you might as well enable Airplane mode during this time. If there is a wi-fi network available, you can enable wi-fi access after turning on Airplane mode. When any cell phone has very low reception or it is very sporadic - going from no cellular reception to minimal, more battery will be used trying to maintain or increase the reception.
This should not cause the battery to not charge when connected to a power source. Is your iPhone connected direct to a USB 2.0 port on your computer - not connected to a USB hub or to an available USB port on the keyboard?

  • MBP discharges battery even while power adapter plugged in.

Just recently, my MBP started discharging its battery even while the power adapter was plugged in. Eventually, it goes dead and shuts itself off, then starts recharging. I've turned off bluetooth and airport, going to a wired/plug in mouse, but that doesn't stop it, nor does changing to "better energy savings" while on Power Adapter. While it is going down, time of course remains "Calculating until full" -- I've checked the pins, and even spent 3 hours yesterday driving to the apple store, waiting, getting a new batter from the genius, and driving back home. Then it happened again with the new battery this morning, after it was fully charged last night.
    Any suggestions? thoughts?

Have the MBP repaired via AppleCare. Just let them know what it's doing. I'd guess at a fault in the charging circuit, but this is obviously not normal behaviour!
