Battery discharging and fan running constantly after upgrading to Yosemite

MBP Early 2011. Just got back a month ago from Apple Support for video related issue. Almost EVERYTHING was replaced (logic board, video, ram, battery, cdrom, even my dented case. Thank you Apple!). Has run for a month flawlessly on Mavericks. Upgraded to Yosemite 48 hours ago. Light on magsafe stays green. Battery indicator icon states Battery is not charging (currently at 75% and falling). Power source: Power adapter. While plugged in and operating, battery is discharging and fan constantly running. If I shut down, mag safe light turns yellow and battery will charge to 100%. If left plugged in and running in Yosemite, battery will drain all the way down.
Have tried:
Rebooting, putting into sleep mode, shutting down completely, unplugging and replugging power supply from wall and MBP while on and off, resetting SMC with Shift Control Option Power keys/buttons.
No third party battery or power apps installed, fresh load of Mavericks from factory when I got it back. This feels like something with the new energy management in Yosemite isn't working as expected to me. Thoughts & suggestions appreciated!

UPDATE: Resolved!
Disabled all login items but problem persisted on normal boot. Resetting SMC and PRAM had no effect. After booting into Safe Boot, problem did not exist. Looked in console logs and saw this right as problem started to occur:
10/20/14 6:49:07.004 PM com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (com.gspy.MO3V2Daemon[93967]) Could not find and/or execute program specified by service: 2: No such file or directory: /Library/MO3V2/MO3V2Daemon.app/Contents/MacOS/MO3V2Daemon
This pertains to the Steelseries WoW MMO gaming mouse. Ran the uninstall.command from Applications for this mouse software and rebooted. Fixed.
Light on MagSafe connector is orange, battery shows as charging, fan is not running constantly. I can't begin to understand how this would effect the battery charging functions but, after uninstalling this, the problem was resolved. Hope this will help someone else.

  • Fan is running constantly after upgrading to Yosemite

I have a 2007 era MacBookPro and since upgrading toYosemite, the fan will not stop running, from the moment I power on.  This is new behavior that I did not have under previous OSs.  At the moment, I have only Safari and Finder apps open and the machine is so hot I'm afraid I'm going to start a fire!
    Here's the machine I have:
    MacBook Pro (17-inch 2.4GHZ)
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 256 MB
Am I going to have to revert back to the previous OS? I'm afraid to leave it on unattended.

  • My macbook is running slow after upgrading to yosemite

Other's have posted similar experiences by when I ran etrecheck I didn't get a bunch of fails and yet my computer is extremely sluggish since moving from snow leopard to Yosemite.  So much so, that I'm considering going back.  Programs load slowly and switching between programs has a delayed response. Reminds me of the PC I had before I bought my macbook in 2008.
Any ideas on what might be causing the slow down?

  • Battery shows X and fans run constantly.

All of a sudden yesterday, my computer wouldn't turn on. I finally took the battery out numerous times and decided to hold the power button, that fixed it. Now, my computer works but the battery at the top corner shows an X (but works when unplugged) and my fans run constantly.
I know this issue was common on the old plastic MacBooks, but I can't find any issues with this one.
    -Unibody 2.0Ghz w/ 4GB of Ram.
    It's updated to 10.5.7

Usually when the battery display shows an X, it means there's no battery detected. Yet you say it works when unplugged. Odd.
The first step is always to try resetting the SMC, which it kind of sounds like you did:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411
You can also try zapping the PRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
The high-running fans might be the result of an out-of-control CPU process. Check Activity Monitor (make sure it shows "All Processes" and not just "My Processes") and see if something is eating up a bunch of CPU. You can kill that process from within Activity monitor and see if that helps the fan.
If none of those work, call AppleCare or visit your local Apple Store Genius, and have it serviced under warranty, as it's likely a hardware issue. Good luck!

  • Fan runs constantly after installing replacement battery

I received my replacement batteries on a timely basis, charged them as instructed and get proper running time from them.
My issue is that suddenly the fan runs almost perpetually. I have zapped the PRAM, stared at the console utility looking for a problem, and watched activity monitor. All seem normal.
The CPU now runs at 140-142 degrees all the time. It would spike there occassionaly before but only when I knew I was pushing hard. Even connected to AC hoping that will vent the machine better has not helped.
Is it the replacement battery or just coincidence? Suggestions appreciated.

You might also try a different battery if you have access to one. Unfortunately, many of the replacement batteries being shipped by Apple are defective. They don't fit properly into the battery bay. I suspect that if the quality control is this poor, then it seems likely that other problems will arrise as well. Check carefully that the battery itself is not overheating. Another possibility which also happened to me is that after installing the last upgrade to the operating system, one or more of the third party widgets became problematic, causing the same problem you describe. After removing all third party widgets, the problem stopped. Good Luck

  • Drive and fan run constantly

Lately my fan and disk drive have been running constantly very loudly. What could be causing this and is there any diagnostics I can run to alleviate the problem?

Does your computer slow to a crawl when TM is running? There's quite a few things that could be wrong here, so the first thing we want to do is take a look at your logs. Download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/timemachinebuddy.html
It will monitor the TM logs for you. After your next TM backup, check the widget for the log file, then copy the information in the window and paste it here. If there's a lot of information, the log may overflow the window, so make sure you get everything!

  • Won't wake up and fan runs constantly. HELP!!!!

    Hello all
I recently opened up my powerbook to fix the case because I was having some issues with it interfering with the power cord. When I put it all back together I turned it on and now the fan runs at high speed constantly (9000rpm) even though it is not hot. Took it to the apple store and he looked at console and said one of the temp sensors was probably unplugged. I opened it up again and looked for, something lose but found nothing. I have no idea where the plugs and temp sensors are to even really check but he said it would be noticeable. Does any one know where I could look or maybe if its actually a different problem??
I have also noticed through this whole ordeal that if I put it to sleep for any extended amount of time that I cant wake it up. The screen comes on and the courser is there but no log in screen, so I have to shut it down via holding the power button for 5 sec and it starts up and runs fine.
Not sure if these two problems are linked but they are both extremely frustrating and any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Chuck

Since you've had it open, there is the possibility there is a connection issue.
First, I would reset your power management unit (PMU): http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431
Next, I would run the Apple hardware test: Find your original OS X disks, the first one should say in small print on the label 'AHT Version x.x'. Insert it, reboot holding the alt key down, choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted choose the extended test. Does that give you any pointers on the hardware?

  • HDX18 fan runs constantly after BIOS update

I updated my BIOS to the latest F.31 version before installing Windows 7 as recommended.  Now my fan runs at the same speed all the time no matter what.  Before this my fan ran very slowly at idle and blew like a hurricane when I was running games or the TV tuner.  It changed with the conditions now is always the same.
I went into the BIOS and there is a setting for "fan always on" that I could change to disabled.  I am comfortable in the BIOS but a little leery of making any changes as I am not an expert here.  Anyone have this issue?  Will disableing the fan always on make it variable again?  I regularly blow out all my vents and the computer is very clean so I don't think it is a dust issue.
    Dave

oh I see.  One option is to supplement with an small external fan (these are cheap) near the laptop's air intake.  I'm not sure if changing the BIOS setting would make it variable again, that's an interesting question. Regardless I would supplement with external fan to be on safe side in my humble opinion.

  • Imac intel start up problems and fan runs constantly on high

I got my Imac 17 Intel Duo Core on March 16th and 10 minutes after I started it the screen went black and a little light started flashing on the lower right. After holding the power button it finally turned off but would not boot up, just that black screen and blinking light. I was told by tech to unplug everything for a few minutes then put the plug in just the Imac, then hold the power button down while plugging it in. Well it started after that but the fan was on high constantly. This was remedied by unplugging everything for a few minutes and then starting back up normally. Now it runs in stealth mode being virtually silent. If your Imac intel is making noise it's not normal. Check out this site for noise problems.

I second Dave it needs to go back to service. What I have heard happens sometime is one of the temperature sensors is either not put back on properly during reassembly or it comes of soon after. With an incorrect temperature reading that particular fan will run at full speed. You can check the fan speeds by installing iStat Pro: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/27037

  • VMware Fusion suddenly hogging resources and fan running constantly

I have had my MacBook for about a year now and until 2 weeks ago had no problems with this issue before. Now suddenly, if I launch VMware Fusion (even not running any programs) the MacBook fan comes on and stays on. When I launch the Mac "Activity Monitor' App, sure enough VMware is hogging all the resources. I have added nothing to the XP side of things during this time. Any ideas on what might be happening as the constant fan 'on' issue is a pain and it FEELS like it's a drag on regular Mac performance. Thanks.

Is it possible that your Anti-Virus software (Not sure if you installed one) is performing a scheduled virus scan at bootup? Until that is finished, it will continue to attempt to start/finish the scan at boot up.

  • Aperture and iPhoto Running Slow Since Upgrading to Yosemite

IPhoto and Aperture is now running so slow it is nearly unusable.  It has an especially slow startup.  It was running just fine at first.  I had imported some Canon 5D (original) RAW files, and it has been grinding ever since.  I have tried deleting OS preferences and creating a new library.  Neither suggestion helped the situation.  This happened just a couple of days after the Yosemite update.  I have added all of the latest patches.  I am running it on a very recent MacBook pro.
I rely on this software heavily, so if it is not fixed soon, I will have to switch to Lightroom.
    Thanks,
    Chris

As kq6up mentioned you should try to repair your iPhoto/Aperture library. You can do this by holding down the option-key and the command-key simultaneously as you are launching iPhoto/Aperture. You will get some options to try out.
If that doesn't help, I would recommend using iPhoto Library Manager from Fat Cat Software that looks for duplicates and old thumbnails from previous versions of iPhoto. It should be able to fix Aperture libraries as well. I managed to clean up nearly 40 GB off from my 110 GB library using it and with prog99 tip iPhoto runs blazingly fast again.

  • HT203300 Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 no longer syncs contacts and calendars after upgrading to Yosemite

Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 no longer syncs contacts and calendars through iTunes after upgrading to Yosemite. It worked fine until I made the mistake of upgrading. Help!?

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The usual results of posting etrecheck output on this site without a full description of the problem are very poor.
The many "failed" or "killed" warnings that etrecheck sometimes spews are not a reason to reinstall the OS.
The better your description of the problem, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What other changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

  • Updated to OS 10.7.3; fan runs constantly and battery life dropped to under 2 hours when 100% charged. How do I get back to 10.7.2, I don't have a backup prior to this upgrade. This is a newer Macbook Pro 13", no modifications.

Help! This new version of Lion is making me miserable. The fan runs constantly, the computer is hot and battery life has dropped to under 2 hours on a fully charged battery. I updated yesterday, nothing but misery today. Even running the mail program alone make the fan run like I have everything open. Using Pages, iPhoto, and iTunes simultaneously makes the computer blistering hot.Yesterday, I could use all three without any trouble. Any suggestions to either jettison 10.7.3 or how to fix without any expense? I haven't modified this computer at all, it is as it came from the box in August 2011: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB 1333 Mhz DDR3.

I updated to Lion 10.7.3 and started noticing my fans running on high all the time and my battery would drain 2-3x faster.  I was going to take my computer into an Apple store until I found this thread.  I did the SMC reset by shutting down my computer, plugging it in, and then pushing down shift+control+option while also pushing down the power button.  Nothing happens on the screen and the computer did not turn on.  I then released all the buttons at once after holding them down for 10 seconds.
After that, I simply turned my computer back on and everything seems to be working fine.  The  fans are not blasting anymore.  I have a newer MacBook Pro where I can't access my batteries.  The SMC reset may differ for other types of laptops.
